Broken Ford Bronco Steering Rack?! Here's HOW TO FIX IT!

  • At this point, everyone knows that the new Ford Bronco has a real issue of bending and breaking tie rods. From there, a broken steering rack might not be far behind (in addition to the other collateral damage that could occur). And although the Ford Bronco Raptor (and some Bronco trims) have beefier steering racks...they're still far from indestructible. Lucky for us, we found a replacement that IS basically indestructible - the 74Weld billet aluminum steering rack!

    What an amazing piece of engineering! Great work, though I think I'd rather have a nice, simple manual steering, with an hydraulic assist. Is this Bronco drivable if the steering motor fails? reinstalling that rack into the Bronco reminded me of watching the mechanic struggle to get the rack back into my WK - took forever, and I learned some new words! LiteBriteNationBeautifulRack!

    • @Skinflaps_Meatslapper
      @Skinflaps_Meatslapper Рік тому +2

      Electric racks are still steerable if the assist fails, just the same as hydro racks. Hydro racks can be retrofitted, it was done on the 4600 Ultra4 Broncos, but they're not tougher than this nor do they really offer more steering assist, and they certainly aren't as tight/precise/fast as an electric. Plus you'll have to find a way to mount a hydraulic pump on an engine that was never designed for it, which is no small feat. This rack is the better choice, and if it was around back when the 4600 Broncos were being built, they'd have this rack instead of hydro racks no question. Don't underestimate electric assist, it is absolutely up to the task, it just needs a mechanic up to the task of working on it, and they certainly didn't make it easily accessible. According to service manuals, 5th gen 4runners/3rd gen Tacos are supposed to have their engine lifted partially out in order to access the rack for replacement, so I don't think it's just Ford making them inaccessible.

      At this point the next weakest link will probably be the belt or plastic drive gears, followed by the spindle tie rod mount. Gears are easy to reproduce in steel, and they can be made to run a wider and thicker belt. Carli Suspension is working on a double shear tie rod mount for the spindle, so once you get to that point you'd probably have to roll it off the side of a mountain to break anything steering related. It'll eventually be bulletproof, just takes a while for aftermarket to catch up.

    This is the problem with modern engineering. In the old days they didn't have the ability to easily engineer right to the edge of being just strong enough so there was a healthy safety margin built in. They over built on purpose but now we intentionally get as close to being underbuilt as possible to save literal pennies on a part and here we are with exploding steering racks from a company thats been making steering racks for a 100 years.

      Shop rates are usually around $1-2K for install, the rack itself is $3K, and if you don't have a 3.0 donor rack you'll have to buy one of those too for $1-2K. High end, $7K, low end, $4K. What really drives the cost up is the electronic integration of the rack to make it play nice with the rest of the Bronco, as you'll still get the same lane assist and whatnot. The Bronco will think it still has the original rack, except the actual rack is similar in strength to hydro assist racks used in competition IFS rigs and desert trucks (which start off at $5K and go way up from there).

    • @quinnpultz8004
      @quinnpultz8004 Рік тому

      @@Skinflaps_Meatslapper I hope a shop doesn’t charge 2K to do this. If they do they don’t know what they are doing. If they don’t know what they are doing they are not one of our dealers. I don’t like to dictate shop rate but it seriously is no more than hand a day.

    • @Skinflaps_Meatslapper
      @Skinflaps_Meatslapper Рік тому

      @@quinnpultz8004 The shop rate I was quoted is a bit over $1K to swap my 3.0 over to your housing, install, and a realignment. With the way Bronco tax works, it wouldn't surprise me one bit to see a shop charging over $2K for it at some point in the future. But if you guys are being selective about who you're partnering up with, then maybe that's not going to be an issue. Speaking for others, it would be nice if you guys made a 2.0 housing so Bronco owners wouldn't have to buy a 3.0 rack and have it programmed into order to get your housing. Seems to me it's just a matter of making the housing accept the 2.0 motor and gears, as from what I can tell the shaft and the rest of that fun stuff is identical. There are already people swapping 2.0 motors into 3.0 racks to sidestep the programming, and everything bolts up...surely it can't be all that different. The 3.0 motor is a nice upgrade and that's the way I'm going with mine, but there's a lot of guys out there that would rather just use their own rack and are fine with a bit less steering torque.

I firmly believe that electric steering is the future for offroad once it’s done right. But it’s not up to me. All OEM’s are doing it so you can either develop better electric systems or get passed up.
