How many PACKOUT DRAWER UNITS to order???? What will fit inside the new Milwaukee Packout drawers...

- I decided to mock up some drawers the same size as what the new Milwaukee Packouts will be. At the time of this video the Milwaukee Packout Drawer Units are still on pre-order so I'm just trying to figure out how many to order and what will fit inside the respective drawers. Hope this video helps you if you're in the same boat.

Ideally the bottom box in any pack out style box would be one big deep drawer so it'd be easily accessible.
I agree only if the “big drawer” is dedicated for larger tools. Otherwise, they become “dump drawers”
bad news from the future...
The "cabinet" pack out is born.
OMG This is exactly the video i was looking for. After days of searching finally found it and you even physically show it instead of just saying what fits. Thank you!
Just glad to see I’m not the only one that doesn’t keep my packout brand new clean! So many guys with the spotless packout in their videos
People with too much time on their hands.
Lotta guys got packout setups who don't do packout work.
Spencer, use your skills and make your own custom depth drawers and integrate them into the Packout system. Then sell the plans. If Ron Paulk can do it you can too. Be blessed.
You are not a lazy American, Lewis. You are a practical, hard working and very skilled craftsman.
If it was me I would keep the boxes and use the drawers for hand tools and things I used the most
I measured all my tools determined what tools need to go together and custom built stackable boxes with drawers from plywood and put on a dolly. Ended up with 3 16x16 cubic boxes from 1 sheet of plywood. All 3 boxes fits in the trunk or back seat of a compact car. Each box setting on a 4 caster wheel dolly makes a nice roller chair with storage. 4 boxes stacked 2 high each with a door on top make a excellent work surface...
Lewis, flip the base of the jig saw off the 90 degrees angle. It should fit into 3" drawer.
Another great video, and as always a clever solution to a problem. Great idea to build a mock-up set of drawers to test fig your tools in anticipation of the release of the Packout Drawers.
(Yes, I am watching this after their release and after having seen your videos showing your new drawer stack, custom rolling bottom plate that better stays within the footprint of the Packout stack, and your ultimate choice of hand truck/ dolly to cart your stack on and off your van using your Aldo very slick folding aluminum ramp!) But watching this helps me see the progression of how you’ve thought out the storage solutions that work best for your needs. I also appreciate your honesty when you share your likes and dislikes as well as your reasoning for choosing one method over another, i.e. rolling your tools in vs carrying individual boxes to spare your shoulders. It’s all useful information to allow others to help make better informed decisions on where/when/why/and how to spend/invest their money in storage and transport solutions that will best meet their needs. Well done, indeed!
(Mad respect to OPT for pointing to your video(s) to help customers have an idea what can fit into where.)
I would use drawers because as a finish carpenter it will give you pleasure seeing your work van drawers setup as you need and want. Put the finish touch on your drawers in your work van as you do customers homes. Keep up the good work. Great job on ceiling trim and built in bed.
Great Video! My Packout drives me crazy on a daily basis when I’m going for a tool in the bottom box. Watching this and Ron Paulk makes me realize how underserved Carpenters and General Contractors are in tool organization and storage. There’s a big opportunity for the right system.
That’s why I would go with toughsystem.
@@christophercrawford2736 why tough system over packout ? Just ordered my packout and am genuinely curious all my tools are dewalt
@@scotland1380 PackOut is more modular. ToughSystem gives you the ability to use Dewalt’s racking system in your van or garage/shop. Also, it’s nice for someone like me who leaves my boxes in my back seat and sliding PackOut forward would be less convenient than the toughsystem, where I can usually unclip one side and tilt it up and out of the other side’s clip.
Thanks again. I use the packout system and I deal with the same thing when you need something it’s always in the bottom box in the back of my trailer. Not always the easiest to get to. But I love having them at the same time. Well I’ve got my tools all at one job it makes my cleanup and loading up a lot faster. Because I can just pack everything away and roll it into my trailer.
I gave up on hard case storage. Not enough flexibility and they get super heavy. I moved to bags and soft storage and use smaller bags in the soft bags to organize sub components. Great video!
Me too
Sir as talented as you are making what works for you seems to be the best solution.
wish they would make the pack outs with doors that can be opened in the front. That way the nail guns and circular saw would fit and have access. lots of people including myself use vans and space is tight.
All they had to do is make the bottom cart with a flip out door in the front, . I saw a hack doing this on UA-cam,, but it looked hacked.
Personally I'm more into maintenance/ repairs / rentals now. I phased out big remodel jobs. I just ordered a rolling one that's much smaller, splits in 4 cases and the bottom flips out, so no unstacking . Hoping it's durable.. Stanley made one but I don't see any suppliers .
You can make your own packout dolly with one of the mounting tops and any dolly you want to use. It works way better then Milwaukee trying to make everyone happy.
🤙🏻 thanks very helpful info, in the same boat trying to find better ways to get tools into work places and once there able to get them out
Thanks for this video! I'm at the same point trying to decide about moving over from Systainers to Packout and this gave me the push. Agree with the lower being a drawer unit.
Removable handle modification has helped me a good deal.
only reason i never invested in the Pack outs was no drawers. Been using the Dewalt Tstack system. Drawers are a must on a big stack
That's Awesome! Thanks for sharing, we've had a lot of questions about what will fit we're just going to point them here! Great info thanks for taking the time!
I hear ya on the rolling bottom box. And for the system to work it always has to go to the job.
You can replace the screw and gat a spring loaded clip and be able to remove the handle. You can also get a dolly from Milwaukee or a regular dolly with a wide base and use the base they use to mount then on the wall and set up your packs the way you want.
I work outside building decks and screen porches but I'm a tool junkie and woodworking dreamer. I built out my Gruman 14' box van in the "Ron Polk" style. I made 3 versions of the workbench that I interchange (1 for miter, 1 for aluminum coil brake work . 1 for future woodworking) I made his horses but made them with adjustable legs with a 2x4 top and 4" drawers and 8" drawers and vertical tool cubbies. I too have a pack out and now am thinking of total remod using all pack out. I like the drawer idea and interchangeable configurations for the work at hand. I really like the flip-up locking arm for the drawers. I currently use a Trex deck clip as a twist lock for every drawer. The question is, is it worth the investment? We sometimes do interior remodel when it involves doors or windows related to our outdoor work, so we do use Trim, Sheetrock, Painting tools, vacuums, portable table saw etc. I love having every tool in my van needed a lot or not.
Seems like you’ll triple the amount of boxes needed to fit the same amount of tools switching. At this point you might as well build your own drawer cart and paint it red
Great thinking of building protos of these. Very smart!
I'm a little surprised that with your skills, seemingly limitless energy, and granular attention to detail, you don't design and build your own modular tool storage system.
I did just that 40 years ago, before plastic modules were a thing, and even though my system cases are made of pine (to minimize weight), most of the original fleet of two dozen are still in service. I understand that durability is a big issue for most, but most of my work was strictly solo and interior, like yours. I used a folding Magliner handtruck when necessary for traversing rough terrain on the way in. Once on site, I used custom flat carts integrated into the design of my van build-out and capable of carrying as many as 12 modules each. The individual modules, about the size and shape of Gerstner machinist's chests, are stackable and individually lockable. Their sizes were coordinated with those of my van build-out. Modular drawers universally dadoed to accept partitions for small items are interchangeable from one modular case to another, and all drawers are immediately accessible without any unstacking of the cases. Double-sized stackable modules accommodated miter saw, small trim compressor, and other bulky items.
If I were to rebuild the system, I would go with plywood rather than solid, and make the shape a bit deeper and more squat. As is, one can occasionally fall over if not loaded along with others in the van. But they usually travel as a pack.
A custom universal modular tool storage system is a project that requires significant planning and time to execute, but if construction is done in a batch, it can be done efficiently. The lasting value of customization can be amortised over many years in terms of optimal space utilization and maximum operational efficiency, but it is not a project easily approached until your work flow and toolset are well defined by preliminary attempts and years of experience. No doubt, most tradesmen today will feel such investment in internal organization cannot be justified when it is so easy to buy and adapt to what the major manufacturers deem marketable, and quickly get back to the work that directly pays the bills.
Your video demonstrates how to get the most out of whatever system you go with. Planning and analysis are everything.
Great job I am constantly move around, back & forth disorganized. But festool just came out with a new systainer drawer track built into the systainer. So now using taller OR the bigger size systainer you can triple or put bigger tools away........
Look into that less TOWERS with more capacity.
I have seen that. I guess I'm just kind of over festool. I have a mountain of T-locs that I already don't use.

Time for eBay-
Wow!!! A Milwaukee 15ga. finish nailer? Please comment on it when you have some time behind it.
Will do. I just got it. 👍
I had come to many of the same conclusions. The bottom box is a thorny problem. Packout 2 wheel cart is interesting but I think you mentioned it increased the depth. And from another video I saw it doesn't look as tough as I think it should be for the price they're asking.
Thanks for showing us what’s in your drawers
You’re welcome...I think...😂
just orderd mine and had the same thoughts. great vid. thanks..
I understand it's a time investment, but how about building a custom chest of drawers to fit all the tools better and mounting it on a two-wheel cart?
The weight would be a deal-breaker.
Keep in mind looks like the bottom of each drawer has lips for the dividers to slide in. So you my not have a flat surface and lose a little depth in each drawer. Great idea though. Thanks for the video.
For those of us that are home gamers, the Milwaukee system you have now work nicely. There are always trade offs, will be interesting to see what you end up with.
Crazy question.you're obviously a very skilled carpenter. Why not just fully utilize your space and throw tracks on those draws and build you a whole row of custom draws for all of you power tools batteries and chargers .then use the packout drawers for accessories squares nails staples wtc
(Philosophical comment) I am drawn towards the systainer/pack out setups too. Have a few of them. But I’d like to ask if you resonate with this inner tension: the traditionalist in me can’t help but wonder if us modern day Americans have so focused our lives on opening something new and plugging it in that we’ve forgotten the old school definition of a master craftsman being in part judged by the quality of their hand built tool box and the sharpness of their hand tool blades.
I get that I don’t really know if I can find the space in my life to build those out, and I’m sure most guys are the same. But maybe that’s one more indicator of my life being improperly balanced? Thoughts?
For my it's just simply the fact that I've been deploying and packing up tools for half my life now. Anything that takes the edge off that monotony is welcome. Its certainly not a thing where I feel like I'm judged by having the latest and greatest, probably the opposite for me actually.
Drawer style pack outs allow u to use your pack out like a tool cart u take from room to room easily. I wish they made a good base with a single door not drawer. And a two drawer that has two 10” drawers. 👍
Love the videos, but I can’t help notice the router flexing going on at 9:01 lol
Bro is a production machine
Before you dump a ton of $, spend the money on a Packout dolly. With the foot brake on the dolly, you can access all boxes in the packout stack without I stacking a single box. It’s a total game changer. My stack dolly up goes 2 medium (saws & drills) , 2 small (M12 & specialty tools) , 1 lg organizer (fasteners) 2 slim organizers (Bits & blades)
great vid man ... it means a lot you post these
Lowe’s and Depot sell a telescoping “Milwaukee “ branded hand truck that has fold out wheels and is rated for 300#. I’m planning on buying the racking plate or mounting plate and fixing it to the hand truck.... This should give the lower drawer box on a telescopic dolly with fold in wheels and 300# capacity and keep a smaller footprint...still looking Milwaukee-ish
Cpooutlets.com has a packout deal going that if you buy the cooler compact tool box and small box with foam insert you get the milwaukee dolly free. Given the price of the 3 is about $230 you would technically be buying the dolly and getting the 3 boxes for $40. Might be a good route to take with less work, but that depends on if the dolly would work for you.
Great video! The question of what will fit in the packout drawers is exactly what I am thinking as well. I am hoping Milwaukee will make additional drawer options in the future so I can optimize my storage for tools that won't quite fit right in the ones they will be releasing 😉. A single drawer packout 5" deep, two drawer packout with a 7" bottom/ 3" top drawers, and a 3 drawer packout with 4" bottom/ 3" middle/ 2" top drawers. Thanks in advance Milwaukee.....
I much prefer Bosch's Lboxx system. They have handles on the front, top (I think Milwaukee made a mistake in not having these) you can grab them from the side and they all click together. They are not as deep as the Milwaukee which makes them a little easier to carry but wider than the sortainers. They have units with drawer systems but currently only for smaller items and cases with divider boxes so they are very versatile and customizable. I used to cart them in but found that the weight to lift up or bounce down stairs (and there are always stairs) was too much work or damaging to the nosing (I have much more to bring in than what you are showing in your pack outs, like double high). The downside is that once inside the house, I do have to spread out all my boxes (6 Lboxx 2 and 3 Lboxx 3) which does take up a bunch of room but everything is right there for the taking. Drawers will always be more convenient but the sacrifice in space, weight and cost is definitely a consideration that is holding me back.
Dewalt has a dolly that you can remove the bottom box and leave the top boxes in place. I think the dolly has a 500lb capacity and can be used to move other things besides just the boxes.
They also have offered the drawers for 3 years now lol. The packout is a far better system as far as accessories go though. It reigns Supreme in options
@@Heemer14 Milwaukee has definitely stepped up its game. I have mostly dewalt tools but I’m starting to go red.
@@realworldcarpentryremodeli5868 its an ongoing battle, im all dewalt right now because I have so many batteries it makes it hard to pick up anything from a different system. I just keep justifying it with the partially made in the USA factor dewalt has. Who knows maybe dewalt will offer more options with the toughsystem 2.0 update 🤞
I think I am going to go with one 3 drawer and one 2 drawer. 3 drawer will be key for those plumbing, electrical, mechanical tools I keep with me and always end up needing on site
Haha I guess I'm not the only one with a milwaukee packout full of DeWalt tools.
Same! Haha
Same bro
I found the best way is to make your own out of multi ply little heavier but way better
Bare in mind the draws probably have raised grooves for the dividers etc. So may raise the tools slightly
I keep the bottom container for seldom used tools like corded circular saw, cords and string lines. For sure the bottom box has its limitations.
Nice video, I like how your working it out. I am curious to see if the drawers work as well as everyone wants them to.
Your frustration with trying to make something work that doesn't is respectfully obvious. Creating what works for U will be a freeing experience! Can't wait to 👀 it!
Looks like there is a slight gap of maybe 3/16”- 1/4” between the drawer sides and the “face frame” of the Milwaukee drawers. So hopefully there will be a little wiggle room on clearance.
You could maybe try routing out the Milwaukee drawer in the bottom a little if the tool barely doesn't fit.
I don’t know if someone has mentioned this, but consider getting the Milwaukee Utility cart. That way you can remove the need for a bottom tool box with limited access and have more drawers with the benefit of wheels. I actually enjoyed you going through your tool org. And I’m impress you took the extra step of creating the boxes!thanks for your videos! Also, how do you like the milwaukee 15 gauge? I only have the 18 ga. And am wondering if I’m missing out on a significant advantage with a thicker nailing gun. Thanks in advance!
I just got the 15 and haven't put any time on it yet. I'll report back after I've used it a bit.
I use the largest festool sustainer from my milwaukee 15, 18, and makita pin. I feel like it makes those guns super useful. Odds are that you're using them for different stuff, than the pneumatic
You got Mustard in your Ketchup
I hate when that happens.
Great job! This helps a lot for me!
Even if it wasn’t a drawer, but a front opening box it would be more useful/convenient
Why not just build your own? From what I see a slightly larger drawer would greatly increase the effectiveness of each. I am not a pro but I too am looking at doing the same for myself. I love you tube it really shows that we all have the same problem namely a lack of portable effective storage for a smaller space. So far the best I have seen is a stack allowing 2", 4" and 6" drawers put in a case in any order. I think I will be doing the same. That way I can customisze what I need somewhere else.
You might want to take the batteries off the tools, because the battery, even when not I use, can get so low you may not be able to charge it. You maybe able to fit the tools in better.
My favorite type of video
I can barley afford Baltic birch right now smh 😂 salute you big Spence. Learned a lot from you my g.
U try the dolly it is a mounting plate on wheels or there is an option to remove handle with pull pin jakeofall did a video on
Ideally, you would be ably to buy customized sized drawers that would allow you to modify the system to maximize your individual needs. 1 medium sized drawer that takes up 2 drawer slots using both hinges, and also 1 large drawer that takes up all 3 drawer slots using all 3 hinges. So if you want (3) 3" drawers done, you want (1) 3" and (1) 6" done, you want (1) 9" done. My humble opinion.
Spence, any thoughts on using a packout dolly with the drawers on bottom and one big catchall box on top? That would give you the similar height/capacity with good access
I’m definitely considering the dolly.
For your nail guns, think vertical. Grab some kaizen foam and a festool 5 (I think will be tall enough) and place them side by side and butt to head. Grab the 3 drawer sortainer and place on top for nails, oil, hose, etc. Check out Tomo’s setup on the Gram...
Been there done that. I'm just really wanting to try guns in drawers. It would make it a lot more convenient storing tools onsite and in the van I think.
Holy routers, batman. I, for one, am very curious how you find so many routers setup to be useful. I got a second m18 router cause at $100 new, it seemed too good to pass up, and I knew I'd find use for it, just leaving one setup with an 1/8" roundover...but 4!? curious.
Tstak still can't be beat imo for finish work. Especially when it comes to price and options. Just my two cents
Ridgid is making bottom cart drawers
Wouldn’t the tough system work better for you? Cause you can rack it.
Also, unless you need another cavernous tool box like the rolling base, I’d go for the wheeled cart for your 2nd stack. Personally, I like a Packout box for each tool (generally). Foam inserts.
2 problems I have with the wheels cart. I'd be wheeling the boxes into my van, so the drawers would be towards the wall of the van and not accessible.
The other problem is I'm not a fan of the size. I don't really need a "separate dolly" and don't want to store it in my van or on the jobsite.
I might think about it more though.
@@InsiderCarpentry I was thinking you would leave stack on the dolly (technically “Wheeled Cart”) and back it into van like you do in video. The dolly (let’s call it a dolly bc that’s what it really is) is actually more narrow than a Packout box. It’s 48” tall, like 4” taller than extended handle of lower box. Perhaps it may be too deep and stick out too far from van shelving. Might be worth a HD purchase to test it out and return if you don’t like. I also like the idea of having an empty dolly always available with a 400lb capacity. Food for thought. Good video with the drawer mock-ups. Thanks.
Good points. You are correct in that I was turned off by the fact that it would stick out way too far. I often haul built ins and wheel my table saw down the isle. So I try not to let anything stick into the isle any more than I have to. The hand truck does intrigue me...but I like to have each stack of boxes on their own set of wheels.
Check out Hilti redipak dolley.
Adjust the base on the jigsaw Lewis and it may fit the 3 inch draw
Great vid
I like the idea but space is not your friend when it comes to travel. I have multiple bags and certain boxes for different things and I fit or I should say cram! everything so neatly in my vehicle. It's a big game of Tetris and when you figure it out Boom! You gotta Tetris!!
Eh, check out the occidental strong hold 9085 tool case.
Trying to put three heavy boxes on top pretty much one toolbox two boxes full of screws well that weigh down the drawer?
I think it would be better if you built custom boxes.
Yea I wish I would have just waited on the drawers.
Drawers in the roller case would be ingenious. I gave all my roller cases away because of how inconvenient they are. I currently use the dolly’s under all my pack out stacks right now.
Im not very impressed with the Milwaukee 2 wheel hand cart but it would allow drawer stacks from the ground up though.
drawers are for hand tools
You will have to number each item to remember where they go
What’s the blue electrical box for????
Just a template for when I need to cut an electrical box into a mantel or built in.
@@InsiderCarpentry Ahhhh ok! Smart!!! We need more taco Tuesday videos!!!!
Milwaukee has a 400 lbs folding dolly. Just put one of the mounting plates on the bottom and just stack the strainers on it.
Milwaukee has a 400lb Sawzall.. Super Sawzall to be exact!! My favorite power tool in my collection! Lol
I looked at the dolly but I’m not trilled about how it would integrate into my van shelving.
I feel like this should've debuted as a rolling box, it's kinda worthless as it is especially for the price, should've at least had hangers on the back similar to the crate so you could use it with the plate in garage/shop
*Welcome Back*
I was thinking about turning the bottom box into a dust collector like Franks setup.
Yep👍 I plan on converting my cordless Ridgid vac into to bottom.
Currently have a cordless Ryobi air compressor in the large box I almost finished a year ago.
In my opinion, the roller should have a vacuum, air compressor, or inverter like Dewalt has.
If you made one 15" drawer you could have fit couple of your nail guns upright...
One thing I’ve noticed with the pack out set. Is although everything else about them is better compared to the tough box, they have less usable interior space while having a larger exterior footprint at the same time. The packout btm dolly box has so much space wasting contour inside, they’re practically unusable imo.
I have wondered if all the extra sizzle effect the put on the boxes was really necessary also. They are pretty beefy, but you're right. Lots of wasted space it seems.
I like the built in hand truck too, but growing up in the moving business first part of my life, you could build your own drawer boxes, then order a magliner hand truck/ dolly. Like any thing of value they are a few hundred dollars, compared to harbor freight $60 special hand truck, however they will last forever and are much lighter to move up stairs, etc. Magliner.com I think will let you build your own set up with air tires vs hard tires. What size and type blade you want and how high do you want your box rest to go.
Look forward to seeing what you end up with. Saves alot of us out here a few bucks watching some one else test run these things before we buy! :)
I use the Dewalt pack out with the same problem. I did find craftsman makes one where you don't need to unstack. They open up with a slide. Better than the Dewalt or Milwaukee
I don’t think power tools were what they were envisioned for.
Why not have a normal packout on top for all your larger tools and then you can have 2 drawer packouts underneath that can hold the tools that can fit in the drawers. That way you don't have to take the drawer packouts off to access your larger tools like the circular saw
I think I will do that as long as the stack isn’t too high of drawers. 👍
@@InsiderCarpentry Just delete your bottom box cart and get the milwaukee flat dolly and 3 drawer units plus a regular big box on top.
@@floored3145 that's what I would do too. Don't much care for the (original) dolly with the attached box.
Check out the MFTC by benchworks. I build one of these and it uses existing Festool boxes and make them into drawers. Lately I have been using Tstack boxes with the Dewalt cart and thinking about building a MFTC (minus the top) for those boxes.
Festool SYS 4 TL-SORT/3 3 Drawer Sortainer game changer
I already have a couple of those. They are great but the size is limiting. The packouts are a nice compliment being that they have larger drawers.
@@InsiderCarpentry I put only hand tools in SYS 4 TL-SORT/3 3 drawer sortainer which is at the bottom of my stack. I have a systainer 5 which sits on top of that which takes my power tools
and finally on top of the systainer 5 I have Festool SYS3 ORG M 89. This set means no lifting tool boxes off one another to get what I need. I have multiple setups of this for each trade I do. I also have some open tote veto bags, which are great when you are on scaffolding. Cannot stand lifting tool boxes off one another when I am in work mode. I like how festool keep everything to a minimum with their boxes which makes them easier to store and weigh less.
Did you give up on the DeWalt 15 gauge and 18 gauge guns..? Because I noticed you have Milwaukee now...
The last 2 15 gauge dewalt that I have bought have been lemons, so I'm giving the milwaukee a try. I haven't put any time on it yet but I will report back when I do.
Insider Carpentry - Spencer Lewis I have the Hitachi/Metabo cordless and like them. I think you will enjoy the Milwaukee. Same technology.
Did you check the weight in each drawer? The weight capacity per drawer and unit does not seem to be Nothing but HD.
The sys roll sits patiently waiting for its time to come again...
