      [EDIT: Start 'em again and fire me, you noticed and said later on in the video. I still wonder if it was actually sent by the NCR and not Enclave remnants though.]
      Stop the presses Jack, I reckon I got a scoop for ya.
      Go to 31:11 or thereabouts, Ulysses says of the detonator package:
      "Had symbols of America on it. New markings. From after the Great War."
      "New Markings"
      "From AFTER the Great War"
      The Enclave blew up Courier Six's settlement, Ox. This makes my inner Minuteman very mad.
      Did they mean to or was it just taken after the events of Fallout 2 by the NCR?

He says that the NCR fail to see the damage they cause, but he literally left Elija to die at Seira Madre and almost have him release the red mist, trained that tribe in Honest Hearts, and almost let the fucking THINK TANK onto the Mojave. Just cause he had beef with Courier 6. The guy almost killed the Mojave 3 times over and doesn't even think twice about it.

      I've always found Ulysses hatred for the Courier ridiculous for this reason. When I first got to that part I found it to be a very silly motivation. Courier Six wouldn't have known what was in the package.

    The Courier is definitely the most interesting player character compared to the Vault Dweller or the Lone Wanderer. Unlike pretty much all other player characters which lived in isolated communities, knowing nothing of the wasteland, the Courier was an active participant of wasteland events even before the start of the game. Things have already happened in this world because of you, people already know of you and your past deeds. So I hope in what ever future Fallout game we get we don't just play another Vault survivor. Lets play someone who was born, raised, and lived the Wasteland life.

    I'm reminded of what Dr. Mobius said during the events of _Old World Blues_ when you ask about Ulysses. "The other... the other asked a different question, and with it, got the true answer. About what makes nations... and what breaks them. He spoke to the Think Tank, to Klein. Showed them the flag of the Old World... and it made them remember. All of it. All that had happened. They shared things with him that they shouldn't. He now carries those ideas, that knowledge elsewhere..." Ulysses wanted to know what made The Divide into the nation it was, and after it was gone he wanted to know how to bring that devastation upon the NCR and the Legion in retaliation. It's all about how much he wants to destroy these entire nations by himself, when his chosen nation was also destroyed by just one man.

    • @cheesewizard3965
      @cheesewizard3965 6 років тому +64

      My interpretation is a bit different: while Ulysses during Lonesome Road was indeed trying to destroy NCR, it's not his major goal during the events in the other DLC's. Ulysses is a tragic character, and as every tragic character he has a flaw that works both as a hindrance as well as a advantage; that flaw is his obsession with deeper meaning.
      Ulysses, much like a conspiracy nut or your ninth-grade English teacher, believes that there is meaning in everything. This is why he wears an old-world flag on his back; not because of the symbol, but because of everything it resembles, both of the dead nation and himself. When the Divide was destroyed, Ulysses was saved by the eyebots, who recognized his flag, and saved him accordingly.
      Ulysses belief in deeper meaning made him abandon the White Legs. After helping them, the White Legs thanked him by copying his hair style. Ulysses's original tribe had meaning in their dreadlocks, and seeing the mockery and lack of meaning in this tribute drove Ulysses insane, making him abandon them. This left them still with the belief that they would become of the Legion if they killed, but without any restraint.
      He sent Elijah to the Sierra Madre, knowing it would lead to his death, because he believed it would be ironic punishment, that it would be a fitting end to Elijah's greed and insanity. He did not reflect on how he would go on to abduct people and murder them in his power hungry quest.
      Finally, the Think Tank. He was disgusted at how they had forgotten who they are, the meanings behind what they do. Ulysses's question reminded them who they are, and it led to them almost breaking free.
      Ulysses does want the NCR destroyed. But more importantly, he wants meaning, and wants that which has no meaning to be destroyed.He even says it himself:
      "My history isn't revenge or hate. The road that brought us here - it's about that."

      @gratuitouslurking8610 3 роки тому +7

      @@kyokyodisaster4842 I think another part of this also comes from his origin as a tribal, and then becoming a member of the Legion. Everything that had made his people what they were was stripped away when they became just another tally of the 86 tribes, but it's clear in Ulysses's case, this didn't translate to removing every mark- in this case, their dreads, which were probably dismissed as nothing special by the Legion. This one symbol gave Ulysses his own sense of identity inside this homogenized slaver nation, and no doubt between that and how the White Legs mimicked it, started to make him wonder about the point of the symbols in the grander scheme of things. It's part of the reason why one of the rockets is aimed at the Legion too- he may have more animosity for the NCR, but he wants his old masters to bleed dry too. Ulysses seems to be a man that wants things to matter out there, but unfortunately this is a world where everyone's doing their metaphorical nine to five to survive, whether that's keeping geckos off your well or piloting a massive post-apocalypse nation state, the only symbols that matter to most of those people are the ones they create themselves.

      To me the gunshot we take to the head in the beginning of New Vegas is pretty much a reset button. Who the Courier was before Benny's attempted murder doesn't matter, it's who the Courier becomes after. In a metaphorical (if that is the correct word) sense, Benny actually succeeded in killing the Courier. But the Courier was reborn as someone new, a person shaped not by their past, but by their experiences in the Mojave.

    Some people think that by giving the courier a past it destroyed the character creation. However, I think the way they went about creating your past is very well done and does a good job of showing youre your own person, not what Ulysses labels you throughout your journey, and they give you options to tell this to him. People would speak of the divide in the base game, no link to the courier then, no possibility of you knowing anything about your involvement. If you think about it, you and courier six before the events of New Vegas are drastically different people. If anything by discovering your past, your learning of someone else's history, not your own.

      It's why I argue that the voiced character in 4 wasn't necessarily a bad idea. The events of Vault 111 would be a trauma to anyone, as much as a trauma as, say, getting shot in the head and surviving. I mean, it's a better option than Fallout 3's cradle to grave story, where you get forced to literally sit through your entire adolescence.

      Gratuitous Lurking I agree on how they created more of a clean slate than fallout 3. I think people were upset by the fact that the male/female sole survivor already had a predetermined past aka, soldier or lawyer. Ontop of how people couldn't put their own perceived voice and personality onto the character, which I can understand, personally, however, this isn't a deal breaker. I feel they did a good job creating a more compelling story than fallout 3, one that wouldn't have been as much without that voiced protagonist. They both have their pros and cons, as does any game design desicion.

I don't know about you, but pretty much all of the builds I make have the courier spending most of their life around the Mojave, and having been a career courier, given that one does not simply get offered a job from mr house on your first day. House even says he chose you to carry the chip. All LR does is say "yep this guy has been to this and that place in the 20-60 something years they've been alive". Not all that lore breaking

    This is my issue with Ulysses. He blames the Courier for things he didn't know, for places he did not destroy and for history he himself voyeured into. He says they walked the same roads and he knew about the Courier yet all he had were assumptions of who he/she is and how the consequences of actions he was ignorant of. All Ulysses had were assumptions - nothing real, nothing true.

    • @frostblood2927
      @frostblood2927 6 років тому +94

      That's what makes him such a believable character to me. Because that's how people really work a lot of the time in reality. They pick enemies and sides based on assumptions and stories, or complete flukes that also had fault with others apart from their monolithic enemy.
      Ulysses saw what he felt was one person build something he could believe in, finally truly side with. And then obliterate it all right before his eyes. Emotions gripped him, and as he stood without answers he made up his own explanations for the gaps in why everything happened. Not letting go the Courier not knowing what the package was with the idea that ignorance is a choice, even if you're literally unable to find out what it was. He stewed on it for years, growing more angry and embittered. And then he realized: if one person can obliterate everything a people stands for in a single stroke, why can't he use the same powerful strokes to make certain nations like the Legion become a worthy force and don't buckle to the greed the NCR fell to?

    • @gratuitouslurking8610

      In a way, it's kind of a fault for every one of the main factions in the game (except for NCR and Brotherhood? I admit, not gotten to actually endgame enough in the past to see if this applies to those two as well.). Benny underestimates your drive to get answers/revenge for the shot in the head. House, Ceaser, Elijah, the talking heads of the Big MT... all of them underestimate you one way or another, tossing you aside as 'just a mailman' or another of the labotimites despite your strange circumstances. Seeing and hearing Ulysses proper here, I'm starting to notice a pattern.

    • @mikoto7693
      @mikoto7693 6 років тому +47

      That's a really good point. Ulysses assumed that Hopesville/the Divide was a place the Courier had chosen to be their home just through watching her from afar, walking the roads she did and stalking her. He never actually spoke to her or got to know her. He just assumed her motives.
      For all he knows (and its up to the player to decide I suppose), the Courier had some well paying repeat-business clients in the Divide for whom she regularly delivered packages for which would explain why she repeatedly returned there. This is even plausible if we're to believe the food and resources she carried to the Divide were enough to sustain the settlement. Regular reliable pay/employment.
      *Chuckles.* Using Ulysses' logic, we might as well say Goodsprings is my Courier's new 'home' because she keeps returning there, despite the fact she/I return there pretty often to make use of the merchant and doctor there.

    • @LabTech41
      @LabTech41 6 років тому +17

      I think Ulysses observed the Courier carefully from afar, whether as a Frumentarii or as a curiosity. I think Ulysses' past with the Legion, especially his time with the White Legs, made him realize that there was a way out, that there was a third option for his life where even if he couldn't return to the life he had before the Legion, he could build one for himself that he chose, rather than was predicated by outside forces.
      I think he wanted the town the Courier helped to build up could've been that for him, a neutral party that he could be a part of. I think some part of him realizes we didn't know what we did that made the Divide what it is now... but the dream Ulysses had for this would-be home made him blame you anyway. "If not for you, then I could've lived here", didn't matter that we didn't know about the package, didn't matter that our near death wiped that part of our past away, in his mind if he had been in your place HE would've known; thus, OUR failing that town is a personal slight against HIM.
      It's clear Ulysses has totally given up on life, he hates the NCR more than he hates the Legion (which he at least has a passing respect for), and now there's no neutral players in the game. War between both factions is inevitable, and no matter who wins, Ulysses loses. I think he thinks this confrontation he's been building us towards is his way of exorcising his own ghosts, and holding us accountable for what he thinks we did. It's the one real conflict left inside him, a fight between equals held at a time and place of his choosing, and that conflict will resolve who was right, so that he can die with peace.

    • @darkerratum
      @darkerratum 6 років тому +7

      I like your counterpoint and it's true. People make assumptions of things that they clearly don't know and that makes him an enjoyably complex villain. Even then, his issues could've been resolved if he at least talked to the Courier or confronted him/her at least once. I know it doesn't make for good story but if he at least talked like how he did to the Courier once everything was on fire, he could've seen what intentions the Courier really had and from there seen how much of The Divide is accidental.
      But it seems to me that he is still grieving and unforgiving after all these years. Lots of wasted good potential for him.

He has so many layers. Those who say he sounds like a spoiled child just need to look deeper here and think about his history. His tribe was completely wiped out/absorbed by "Kaisar" and he and all his people lost their identity. All his life he has been looking for something to believe in. When he finally finds a place, it's blown sky high and he almost dies in the blast. I think he just needed something/someone to direct his anger towards. So he "shoots" the messenger... I mean he blames the Courier. :)

      Ulysses is very much the spoiled brat villain. A spiteful sophist who directs his anger toward the player character in the form of annoyingly truncated exposition dumps telling us how guilty we are of things we didn't even do in the game.
      This entire DLC foists the whole 'player character was literally hitler before he was the player character' and 'obliviously evil' tropes in such a hamfisted way, it annoyed the hell out of me. This is a ROLE playing game, but apparently our role has already been decided for us and it is being spelled out to us in the most obnoxious way, as the FINAL DLC of an already fully released game.
      Ulysses be like, 'You did all this, remember? Remember? You remember when you murdered all those puppies and drowned all those babies before? lol remember, Courier? Remember how you pressed a button to open a door and it somehow launches a nuke in the process, now the orphanage is gone and it's all your fault Courier because you clearly did everything on purpose - even all this stuff you did in the events prior to the game which I'm only telling you, the player (who had no control over or knowledge of said events), about now in the form of edgy fragmented sentences and exposition dumps. lol by the way did I tell you I would have loved to carry the chip myself but i saw your name so I let you carry it and now everything's bad and I'm all super angry at you'.

    A few thoughts here about this episode.
    For a man who talks a lot, Ulysses doesn't say all that much.
    Ulysses sounds like an abuser to me, they way he shrugs off responsibility and blames others. SOmething to look out for when we finally confront him…
    I have to wonder if the "package" that Ulysses keeps harping on about isn't an ED-E unit. ED-E has been shown to carry memories from before The Great War (and likely from whatever time he spent amongst The Enclave,) and it is possible that he is capable of recording every moment and encounter he is witness to. If the recordings he plays back are any indiciation, he may have overheard the activation codes for the missle launches within The Divide and accidentally set them off.

    • @gratuitouslurking8610
      @gratuitouslurking8610 6 років тому +4

      I suppose the biggest question would be if the Enclave in Navaro had eyebots that'd have detonation codes installed, where did they get their eyebots from, and why would the US Army have automated launch sequences like that in eyebots, or if not the Army being the source of them, why would the Enclave have installed random launch codes into their manufactured eyebots? I haven't played Fallout 2 before, so I'd not really know much of the Enclave beyond broad strokes and motives there, so if it's explained there how they got their eyebots, I'd have no idea.

    • @mikoto7693
      @mikoto7693 6 років тому +10

      Funny, I thought a similar thing Steven Moncivais. I thought Ulysses seemed a bit like a stalker from his description of following the Courier while she delivered the package containing the detonator to the Divide.

    • @lonestar_iconoclast
      @lonestar_iconoclast 6 років тому +7

      @Gratuitous Lurking: My understanding is that the eyebots were a ante-bellum automaton, but The Enclave took many of the original, still operating eye bots and modified them for combat. If my recollection is correct, The Enclave despised the wastelanders, so installing nuclear missile launch codes into these armed and armored eye bots would be an excellent away to "cleanse the unwashed."
      @Rebecca Mumford: My thoughts exactly.

    • @lonestar_iconoclast
      @lonestar_iconoclast 6 років тому +3

      @Lora Elstad: That's pretty close to what I was thinking.

    • @nicholascross3557
      @nicholascross3557 6 років тому +12

      Here's a thought. The package that came to the Divide did _exactly_ what it was designed to do, to hack missile launch systems and cause failed launches. Imagine, if you will, a pre-war experimental weapon for use against Chineese missile silos that was shelved since China had a lot of mobile launch capability in subs, bombers and the like. That device was then tinkered with by the Enclave to work on any missile complex, because of course they would, then ending up in NCR hands. Now the thing is that while Ashton and Hopeville might have been damaged in The War, that would have been surface only and as we know, a society was flourishing there, not the seismic disturbance damage we see all through the Divide, which happened _after_ the package was delivered and turned the Divide into the hellhole it is now. So missiles in silos being askew cannot be why the nukes awoken by the package exploded underground, but a sabotage device could be. But that's just a Game Theory...

    My mind was just blown because i swear from how Ulysses is describing you and the package it sounds so much like the enclave plus with this incident being set sometime in the past long before you came and woke up in docs place it would make a hell of a lot of sense."Markings of the old world" (The enclave was a prewar faction that had access to all of the government and included the president) "A voice spoke from the machine" (This could easily be a reference to President Eden who had compleat knowledge of everything america had and did and in fact was a Commuter AI. (Whats more given the tensions at the time and the area they more than likely sent a enclave agent there rather than a eye bot since a eye bot would either be detained,destroyed or worse not even make it.) ) its more than likely the enclave didn't want anyone but themselves to take control of the area so they sent you in to destroy it and the president enacted a launch command to all missals or a detonation command (Witch does actually exist to prematurely detonate missals if needed such as in the case that a silo was hijacked) and then boom everything happened as it did and only enclave members with the old world symbol would survive (Witch would make sense as to why you survived if you where at the center as well) the eye bots relised you where a friendly a helped you out like they did Ulysses.

    I do think there is a beauty in the literal divide between the two couriers, one is an actual disillusioned Legion lapdog while the other can be an ignorant NCR "hero" aka side quest hunter. Seeing that most players will help the NCR while also the independent New Vegas is the most chosen ending, it really brings the storyline full circle.

    So let me check I've got this straight:
    The Courier has travelled all over the country and gained a reputation for themselves.
    One day delivered a package to the Divide and this caused the missles in a nearby radius to destroy the tribes who lived there.
    Ulysses, who had heard about the Courier, witnessed this and hates the Courier for it...
    Am I understanding this right?

    Our choice? For all that Ulysses uses cheap philosophy he seems to be ignoring the obvious, or to have overdosed on Sartre. As the Courier we're sort of in a meta kind of Chinese Box scenario. In comes the card with Chinese, we look it up in the book and output the response card. Why output the right response? Because we're competent at our job and not a fumbling idiot. We have personal pride, something I'm not sure Ulysses actually understands.

    Every time I revisit this DLC I can’t help but being in awe with the depth of it, although I can’t shake away the feeling, that the Ulysses at some point of writing process underwent some changes, that turned him from a character of its own into more of a plot device. This way you actually have to fight the narrative delivered to get to the deeper meanings of the story. But the ethics of it, the questions it makes you ask yourself is absolutely stellar despite all that. Do you have to answer for the consequences of your inadvertent actions? Is killing cynical man’s sudden hope worse than killing the man himself? Is a nation really destined to be born, live and die to repeat the cycle with all the mistakes made along the way over and over again?
    Thank you for these videos and an opportunity to experience this incredible story again!

    Bethesda Haters: The sole survivor was a poor RPG character because s/he had to be a lawyer/soldier and we knew their backstory
    Also Bethesda Haters: The courier was the best character in spite of having to be a courier, having definitely been to New Reno and having destroyed a civilisation backstory

      Xeferex nope it’s also New Vegas, a great game to be sure but also has its flaws. I just think there is a double standard among the Bethesda bashers. If Bethesda had forced you to follow a particular road in the main story they’d have been crucified. And they got legitimate criticism for the linear nature of Anchorage but Lonesome Road is very linear too
