    Thanks to everyone for the kind words and helpful recommendations. We are running a few polls on our site www.gonewiththewynns.com/story-behind-our-rv-design throughout our Resurrecting Dinosaurs series and we'd love for any input to be shared there as well (these polls provide actual numbers instead of comments that we cannot confirm if the Industry will read).
    For those asking about Fleetwood - It is great they are willing to listen to our requests and we are fortunate to have this opportunity. Both people in the video want to make a change for the more simple designs but they do consider their current owners, it is a delicate balance for them and their bottom line.
    We take this project EXTREMELY seriously, it's a great opportunity for us and anyone else interested in finding a more modern RV. We are starting with the interior/exterior designs and if that's successful who knows what we'll be able to do.

    I would never buy a coach covered in Elkhart graffiti (my name for all the swirly nonsense) or one featuring the decor of grandma's kitchen circa 1974. Unfortunately that rules out, what, 90% of the RVs on the market? To put it bluntly, most North American RV decor is atrocious and the technology antiquated but it seems that no manufacturer has the guts and the resources to blaze a new trail. It's odd given how, in so many other ways, America is the leader in innovation and adoption of new technology.
    I want to see more coaches that are decorated like Leisure Travel's Free Spirit SS. Check it out, you'll be amazed. It's clean and modern yet still inviting and it exudes warmth. Surely such a decor could work in a larger class A?
    And how about using high quality solar panels, lithium batteries and DC appliances? It would cost more at first but when scales of economy kick in, it would be more affordable.
    I'll stop ranting now.

    Pre-wiring for solar is a great step forward. But it really does need a company to have the balls to say "Hey, 80% of the coach electricity is going to come from solar" - because frankly - That would be the coach I would buy. A top to bottom solar solution that can store enough for night time and power ever ancillary onboard throughout the day. It's free energy and the diesel is simply used for moving about.
    I really enjoy what you guys do!! and to have a say in design is huge!.
    Where's the guy in the white shirt from?

    All us fulltimers are drooling right now. One of my biggest problems is where do you put dirty laundry, and don't talk to me about those tiny hampers I've seen in a couple of rigs. They're only ok if you plan to end every day with a trip to the laundromat and never change the sheets. The inside decor needs to be simpler. What was kinda ok when you first saw it gets old quickly when it's in your face every day. Wish they would stop designing for the grandmas, btw I'm 69, but I hate the flowery patterns and drab colors. Dark woods and black appliances are also a pet peeve. We need bright and light.

    I don't mean to sound melodramatic but this project is really important to many of us. As a professional guy in his fourties with a love of simple design, from midcentury modernism to simple railcar minimalism (teak paneling anyone?) I hate that as I look at rv's I have to calculate in either a renovation to a new rig, a new paint job to cover the swirls, and what might be least-bad. I'm probably considered upper middle class certainly not rich and able to do some kind of custom rig.. Your goal including both price point and wired for solar is perfect. I just feel with the hundreds and hundreds of depressing designs out there someone taking a shot on this is a great opportunity. Congrats Fleetwood and whether it works out or not, thanks for giving this a try!

    What a great opportunity you have. Congratulations. Quick idea for pre-wiring for solar in new coaches. Instead of installing the wiring for solar on every coach, run conduit or tubing in every coach that will allow the solar wiring to be installed at a later time. Very small cost up front for empty tubing, but saves huge amounts of time and money when solar is installed later.

    I really like the look of 70's GMC front wheel drive RV's. No slide outs, very contemporary for their time and drove like a car with tandem rear wheels, air bag suspensions and very modern design! Revcon also used this design, why aren't they offering this option today? I hate the big box on lifted wheels design they use now.

    How about ordinary, every day stuff, like a logical place to put the garbage can, and the laundry hamper? BTW, don't go the way of the Axis! Went to a Monaco show, OMG. 10 tons of marble and granite, and all you get in the kitchen is a bistro table, a microwave and a bar sink (for 300+K)

    Well, good try you two. Seems you're up against a rigid industry. Can't get past the crazy stripes on the sides, we've got a way to go. I like tiny homes as they are much more natural inside and out, but horrible fulltime RV's as far as towing performance, no slides, no tanks or boondocking gear and the like.
    We're not even talking bamboo, hemp and I'm still waiting for my onboard hydroponic garden and infrared sauna! Oh well, guess I'll get a fifth wheel toy hauler and make due...

    Thanks, I enjoyed that. I was thinking that 80 year old ladies sit around a table and design the colors and swirls... please Winnebago no more swirls. And the colors, I think they get from companies in China that are going out of business. They need to go home and look what they have in there own homes. My house would never have those colors and materials and NO SWIRLS. It's a home not a circus tent.

    I agree with some of the other posters in that not being able to change the cabinetry is unfortunate. RV manufacturers here in the U.S. need to take a trip to IKEA HQ or other European design houses to find a sense of 21st century. With very few exceptions, American RVs are decorated like someone's Grandma's house. Oh, and please lay off with the swirl graphics. Please return to a more dignified look of clean lines.

    Sounds like they have their foot on the brake right at the start. Cabinetry is world war 1 look.For us the cabinetry is the 1st to be changed. Decor is like lipstick on a pig. We are in our 60's and find these interiors to be heavy,dark and oppressively elaborate. We can say this as we have looked for 2 years, and find the same in all manufacturers. Love u guys ,good luck from Ron and Rissa

    I am an OLDER customer, 57 currently, and I hate the Granny look of most coaches. Options are good. Prewire is a must for solar! Prewire for ethernet. Make lithium an option over existing battery tech. Let us choose!

  •  8 років тому +2

    As someone fed up with the ill fit of most RV floorplans and weird/busy fake glamor visual style, enough to be planning a custom build, I got excited at first but then at 2:58 "we were told we couldn't change the floor plan or the cabinetry, but we could change the decor". Opportunity lost, because a lot more than fabric choices need a face lift in class As.
    Example: keeping Corian counter tops and Lithium batteries exclusively for high-end models is arbitrary and should be an option throughout the line if the consumer did come first. And why sticking with the huge weird swirls on the outside, fear of standing out from the competition and getting noticed? As an option at least, it could've been a big selling point for the new Bounder.

    This was a great insight into how the design of RV's has gotten to where it is today. Statement like "we have to be concern of our customers brand loyalty: says to me I'm too lazy to think "outside the box". Ask yourself, why would Winnebago come out with a "Retro Brave"? The answer is simple - tomorrows customer want something different. Are their buyers in the 60+ age range? I doubt it. The RV market today has changed not just because the baby boomers are at the point of retirement but they want not just to retire like their parents they want to retire like the life style they have led for the last 40 years. SO, my take on these two Fleetwood guys - they have never lived in an RV.
    I think your idea of a survey is great but I think you need to get to the "industry reps" to make your survey to make a difference for the maket. Fleetwood's market is where it is and if these two guys are any indication of the design philosophy of Fleetwood - I desire to say - they will not be making any big strides in the market. They will continue to feed on the fringes and the niche market they serve today. I look forward to seeing where they will be in 5 years.

    Here's 1-thing I want...to sit down at my sofa...and look directly at my TV...having to turn your head to look at a TV in-between driver/passenger area don't work..nor does having to turn my head and/or sit at a weird angle and look at a tv back by the fridge..
    I also like having solar panel hookup options on the outside roof would be ideal as well! Meaning, don't force me to drill into a new roof to route solar wiring down to the basement area for instance!
    Composting toilet is also a priority for many, including me!

  • @elderlyracer9971

    Interesting how their hands are tied with regulations. I am of the thought process, that if it is there people will use it when it comes to solar panels. I understand the lithium argument, but with solar panels if they install them people won't find excuses for not using them ( don't know where to put them, don't want to spend money on aftermarket parts and possibly lowering the value, lack of warranty to protect against leaks, will there be hidden costs, battery capacity etc.) theses are easy excuses not to invest in green initiatives and by installing them in the factory we can reduce some of the stigma of owning a gas guzzling RV.

    I sense a willingness by Fleetwood to change but I think it's clear that they're a bit skittish about losing their customer base. Good luck and I'm looking forward to how far they will go. It's really unfortunate that other design considerations weren't on the table - cabinets, floor plans and the like.

    My partner and I are planning to take early retirement in a few years, selling everything and purchasing a house on wheels and because we now have 2 Greyhound, we're stuck looking at Class A coaches. As a designer of kitchens, bathrooms and new houses, I wish I could be in your position because so far we've found nothing we like and I have ideas.
    Aside from floor plans, many of which are either awkward or just poorly thought out, my biggest issue is the lack of colors offered inside. Everything is drab and dreary grays, greens and browns and many of the fabric prints are just offensive to us. The cabinetry is too much like a kitchen in a McMansion and not suitable, IMO, for the confines of an RV and black appliances in the kitchen are completely unacceptable for us. Neither of us like the idea of spending +/- 100K on a coach and having to spend more money to rebuild it.
    Just a few thoughts to offer your mentors....
    Head room is a priority, we're both 6'4".
    *We want COLOR!* Tropical colors - the turquoise and aqua of water, beach sand tan, muted pint and orange of the sunsets, palm tree greens and prints that aren't overbearingly offensive. Offer it as a 'colors package' option.
    We want light maple Shaker Style cabinetry and stainless steel appliances, sink and faucet in the kitchen. Offer it as an option package.
    We *won't* consider anything without a washer/dryer and an on demand water heater should be stand equipment on all coaches.
    We need a dedicated space for a home office, we may be retired but we'll still be working if/when we feel like it. We don't want mirrored closet doors in the bedroom, nothing's worse than seeing yourself first thing in the morning.
    We don't need a sofa that's folds out to a bed in the living area because we're not 'camping' on a weekend with friends, there's just the four of us and the puppies are fine with a sofa.
    As for the outside graphics packages - I'm a big fan of the design concept of K.I.S.S., keep it simple stupid, and whoever designs the graphic packages is not.
    Offer an optional pre-wire package for solar because as you said, it costs a fortune to add it after the fact.
    Design the coach to be a bit more aerodynamic, nothing kills fuel mileage like driving a box down the road.
    Fresh and new styling inside and out WILL sell!

      @MrTigerprincess 9 років тому

      ***** You are being unrealistic in your demands. The industry can make the coach you want but it would be a custom job costing much much more than standard coaches. If you watched the video you must acknowledge that the industry must meet many regulations and what you are asking - head room for a 6'4" person - is changing the design radically, not to mention your other ideas. Office space, etc. Go to one of the factories and catch them before they build and they may be able to accomidate your tastes.

    Certainly Fleetwood has ongoing focus groups validating the swirls and traditional, dark interiors. Kidding, of course. They all simply follow each other from year to year with the same designs. I do applaud them for taking this small step with you.
    Look at Leisure Travel Vans, who focus on customer feedback for almost every change they make. Take the Unity, for example. What are customers ordering? No swirls. What is the interior design? Contemporary.

  • @MatthewdePaula
    @MatthewdePaula 9 років тому +4

    I completely disagree with the Fleetwood designer about the swirly designs hiding the big slab sides. There's no getting around the fact that this is a big brick with slab sides. Why try to disguise that with garish patterns? Make it classy with a high-end paint finish, a few stripes and done. I guess the "traditional" buyer is who they're targeting mostly with these spiky and swirly stickers.

    • @dubbreak
      @dubbreak 8 років тому +1

      +Matthew de Paula Agreed. I hate the swirls. It seems that many new smaller travel trailers have given up the ridiculous swirls. Maybe that's due to it being younger buyers in that market? Or maybe the designers are wrong and it's not what the traditional buyers want.
      Winnebago now features designs that are primarily one color with a single stripe and the classic 'W'. Airstream has never had swirls.
      Personally, I think it's designer ego and a product of it once being difficult to create swirly patterns. Back in the day the fly by night rv builders couldn't do the swirls. Fancy graphics were the realm of the high end builders that could afford the equipment. Now anyone can have a vinyl cutter capable of doing those stupid swirls. Seriously, you can get a 4ft wide cutter for under $1K. To me the RV swirl is akin to the tribal tattoo. It had its heyday, but that has long since passed.
      If it IS what the buyers want.. then why don't they put ugly vinyl graphics all over their tow car? Vinyl strips and splashes on cars died out in the early to mid 90s. Same should have happened with the RV industry.

    • @MatthewdePaula
      @MatthewdePaula 8 років тому +1

      I think you're onto something, between the ego and the powerful attachment to the way things have traditionally been done, it's no wonder the designers have a hard time giving up their ugly swirl patterns. It's very hard to take criticism if you are a creator of any kind -- I speak from personal experience. So I can understand exactly how those designers must feel, with these "young kids" coming in and telling them their stuff is outdated and needs to change to in order to be relevant. But that's the truth, and the sooner they accept it, the better off they will be.

    Great video and happy to see you guys stick to your guns with The factory guys. I was amazed at how stubborn they were about many things though; "people don't like solar"? Yeah, who wants free electricity, longer boondocking times, less propane usage, and healthier batteries that aren't boiled over with twenty year old charger/converter technology? This guy and most of my mid forties RV buying friends.

    • @margaretrosin7853

      Sorry, I am in my fifties and totally agree the decor design needs an overhaul! And there is no excuse for at least prewiring for solar, and options for lithium batteries. And digging in their heel's on the traditional cabinets and swirly exterior paint?
      They must be stuck in the eighties where these things were first invented. I think.

  • @kaypee65
    @kaypee65 9 років тому +2

    Super fun video!
    If I bought a Class A, and it's something I can afford and that I've been considering, I would really prefer slab fronted, European styled cabinets. I know they can't do fully frameless, but the cleaner look is so much nicer in a small space.
    Second, ugh on those ridiculous exterior paint jobs. How about making a plain box optional for customers who might prefer that? Plus if I wanted custom vinyl graphics, it would be a far easier installation on a plain box.
    And third. The overly ornate window valances feel like they belong in a house with vinyl covered furniture and strange odors. Please, please, some simple framing without so many types of fabric on one small piece of wood would be much appreciated.

    • @kaypee65
      @kaypee65 9 років тому

      ***** One more point. Fleetwood doesn't want to alienate their current customer base. I get that. But if they tweak their decor, perhaps they can attract new customers to their line. Just because what they're doing works in their perception doesn't mean that they can't make changes and do even better. :-)

  • @Trishpage312

    I like the video. It was surprising that you were not "allowed" to change the cabinets. Not even the color or the finish? I feel how you are trying to get across how difficult it is to work with mainstream manufactures. I would want to go custom made. Code for "never gonna happen unless I do it myself." It looked like you had a million choices but nothing that really wanted or liked. Am I off base? It was nice to see how you wanted to change the outside design. Calm down the swishy thing. I really like just a solid color. Even a matt finish! What... Crazy talk! Can't wait to see the new RV! Thanks for walk through and sharing the progress.

    I have owned several RV's the last 30 years and to be honest even with all the different manufacturers out there they really always looked the same. Hurray....for at least a chance. If the industry would ask more people to be involved...they would find a lot a customers wanting more changes. These changes can be made without major cost increases. If they would price to sell then they wouldn't have to discount 20% to 40% to sell.

The only way you can find something like that now is if you buy something that is 20-30 years old. I like that Winnebago is bringing back some vintage designs with the Brave that have an option for no slides. I hope that that is a trend that we will see more of in the future. Good work you guys! I wish Airstream could add slide outs for the xtra room, but because of the shape the body it's hard to have a tight seal over time. Please look at the Airstream for interior design ideas. Exactly. If the class B and B+ markets can adapt, the big guys should too, at least as an option. (How hard would it be to add a checkbox with "no swirly patterns outside please" on the order form? Does literally not cost a thing.) It's odd that only the most luxurious class As can go all-electric (no propane) while most decent B+ can. Considering how much time is invested in building each individual coach, there should be a _lot_ more customization options available. It'd help justify the price tag, too.

ANYONE can pull up to a KOA type place, lay down the cash and wash laundry while plugged into wi-fi, and whatever else you want with full hook-ups; but this old hippy (we are 62 and 58 on the outside) LOVES the idea of not needing hook-ups. We never even considered a composting toilet until we listened to your video's. Seriously, if we bought a big super-c with a full and a half bath, one of them would be a composting type. ...BTW due to youthful hiking injuries, we would like lower inside storage to be roll out.

    Hi Wynns,
    Sounds like you two are in RV heaven!! Designing your interior and exterior colors and materials would be a blast. I had a question that maybe you could find out about and that is: will Fleetwood be delving back into class B+ and C motor homes? My wife and I have owned several class C's and I feel comfortable driving them. I'm not sure I'd feel comfortable in a class A, especially driving in city traffic on occasion. Most C's are setup as family campers, and not for retirees. I know there are RV's like the Coachmen Concord that are more set up for retirees, but they're much more expensive, and some things we just don't like. The under-the-counter microwave oven and the split bath is not to our liking. We also like the bunk over the cab for storage and for the grand kids when they travel with us.
    Fleetwood a few years back offered the Tioga Ranger 31N which had two large slides and offered quite a lot of space for a C class. I do part time computer work and the 31N offered a second dinette which would have been great for my office. Also it had a all-in-one bath which we like. I think this type of unit with a few changes here and there would be a great unit for retirees, but if they don't make it...you can't buy it!
    Thanks for a very enjoyable show, and you two are very blessed to be doing what you do!!
    Take care,
    Dave and Donna Lane

    A shame you could not be involved in the actual design of a coach. I see so much waste in usable space for the sake of "STYLE" in todays new designs. We recently purchased a Winnebago Adventurer 38J(2005). The entire floor plan just makes so much sense. Of course we still did a few minor changes to suit our needs but overall it was very close to perfect. Just my thoughts.

    the US RV industry today is like Detroit in the 80's. Keep pumping out the same old same old for people who are only fond of the legacies, without innovation of any kind. The cheaper RV's interior looks like a 70's living room and the expensive ones from the 80's. wood panel on the refrigerator door? wallpapers? white vinyl, I mean leather chairs? On the flip side, I think they must employed a lot of carpenters to make all the wood trimmings.

    BTW, I installed laminate vinyl planks in my house. Five years later they still look like new. They've been spilled on, puked on repeatedly by the cat, peed on while potty training a puppy, and tolerated nails from my large dogs. They are fantastic and would hold up better in an RV than ceramic tile. Plus they would be far easier to care for than carpet (blecch!)) So two thumbs up on that idea.

    Loved all the design choices, but in yours I would have not chosen the darker wood for the door panels. The Sprinters and Airstreams have a very light cabinets and to me the look very sleek and sophisticated! Maybe I did not look long enough at all the boards you showed. My first impression was "WOW!" But the main thing and most important one is that someone is making changes to go with the times. We're "Old Fogeys" but with young taste!
    Waiting anxiously for your next video.

    If I were a permanent RVer I would NOT want those gaudy color they picked out. Subtle greens,blues and tans is a more livable option. I agree that solar prewired is a must. So is a better entertainment center...better stereo etc. Also more USB outlets built in. If I mover up to full-time I would also love an office where I could have a PC, 3 screens and a printer. (I do day trading and that is essential) I hope they can hear this...

    congrats! such power in your hands ;-) I think you guys have such valuable advice for the solar/power and the design ideas. The corporate answers are just too stuck in the past. It seems like a good idea to offer a Simple Design package as a custom order, for both the ugleee outside and the uber-staid inside. Yes, I live in an RV too, and have tons of great ideas! The first thing my husband and I did was to simplify the patterns and surfaces, because in a small space, it gets very uncomfortable, visually and affects the happiness ratio.

    Omg, i can't wait to see the tour. That color, i am buying a dino rv (87 komfort class A) and redoing the inside. I picked the same wall color and have been torn between the color flooring you picked and a dark bamboo. (I like the way bamboo feels) and if you take a look at most of the remodles on youtube of RVs they are either brighten it up with colors or getting out of black and white and picking up warm tones that are neutral. Things that make where you are living/sleeping fewl familiar and comfortable, which for me the black and white feels stiff and i am scared to let my kids touch anything.

    Kudos to Fleetwood for at least looking as if they will make changes and same for the Wynns for being the ones to bang their heads at corporate folks for a year. It all comes down to what FW thinks a large number of RVs want...not a niche set but something that draws in a segment of Americans that doesn't exist right now... and thats the under 35 yr old folks driving a RV

    Wow, what an honor to be part of the design process. If I had my druthers, rather than living in my '93 Pace Arrow, I'd definitely want solar, one of those bath tubs that you can enter by a door so that the tub would be higher, have only solid color/s, have a nice fireplace, washer dryer combo, lots of storage, sliding chairs on a track so the lay out could be adjusted for company and such, no carpet but rather cork as an alternative, full size sink in the kitchen, and definitely nice curtains instead of blinds. Of course these are just my personal likes so take it anyway you like.

  • @teds9896

    The problem with Lithium in some ways is similar to solar but perhaps even more profound, and that is that we're still living in a time where these resources have some scarcity. Solar is not getting to the point where there aren't such limitations, but the battery technology you've still got the mining problem. Thus, these applications should go where they're most needed which is likely in portable devices and electric powered vehicles. The reason is that Lead battery technology is sufficiently advanced and the weight/energy density is far less an issue in an RV powering some lights and a refrigerator, than it is in a Tesla or say a Chevy Volt. Luckily, we are getting to points where these issues are waning as well. My wish for one is that there'd be a lot greater focus on microturbine generators such that we could get far more vehicles electric, albeit relying on traditional fuels for range extension. Same goes for RVs; you wouldn't feel so guilty running the generator if it was as efficient or had pollution levels less than electricity from traditional power plants.

    I have to say it's not really design but more interior design. I would have liked to seen some more engineering discussion on topics such as insulation (plenty of people want 4 season capable coaches), chassis length (I really dislike the trend of using very short chassis such that the rear wheels are nowhere near the rear bumper thus resulting in a large amount of overhanging weight in the rear), aerodynamics (clean up all the handles that stick out, exposed awnings, and so on), etc.
    On the topic of the video, I would like to see coaches with options to get rid of the ugly (to me) colonial styled furniture and use designs that would be home in an IKEA catalog (but with thicker wood and more dramatic stains that make the wood grain really pop).

    There is such an opportunity for a company that's not a dinosaur itself to get into this business. These guys have more reasons not to do something cool than reasons to do so. The fact that one company owns so many brands really limits the choice of people who think in a more advanced way.
    No solar, no composting toilet, no lithium batteries, no, no, no, no. I'm going to continue to try to find a bus to convert and actually have a 30 year old bus be more advanced than anything Fleetwood would have the guts to do.

  • @Chris-gp7hl
    @Chris-gp7hl 8 років тому

    The designers certainly made known the reasons many of these changes cannot be made. To say that these companies are resistant to change is a bit harsh. They also hit on a key fact. One persons taste or one age groups taste would limit the companies market share. The average buyer of a mid to upper end class A coach is many years older than the the Wynns so it is only reasonable that Fleetwood lean toward that market with their designs and finishes. I think it very progressive however that they do offer color and finish choices that run the spectrum thereby appealing to other age groups as well. It was very refreshing to see that Fleetwood understands their loyal customer base while still trying to attract new buyers. Would love to see a collaboration of both young and old (well not too old LOL) as well as those that are technologically savvy and those who are lets say mechanically savvy, get together to come up with ideas that lead to a "super coach". Full timing and coming up with solutions and ideas is so much fun. Full timing reveals issues that might not be noticed by the weekend user but once put into play as an upgrade or improvement over a standard feature become relevant and beneficial to the casual rv'er

    I disagree with the statement about the side design not being linear and not looking good. There are tons of old buses and coaches from he 50's that had full run linear chrome plated lines going down the sides and they looked like badass airplanes flying down the road. Obviously, chrome is out, but to say linear lines don't look good bc of the length of the coach is a copout.

    My sister is mentally handicapped. Our entire family, but especially my sister has experienced a great deal of pain due to people's lack of understanding of the way she was born naturally. The word "retarded" was used so many times to hurt her and us by proxy. I know you didn't intend to inflict pain, but as someone who had been enjoying your videos a lot, I was compelled to let you know that it really bummed me out. I stopped your video midway and it will give me pause before I keep watching more.
