    I also put the SH-6 PUs into my LTD. I couldn't believe how they changed my guitar soundwise into something completely different in a very good way. It's like a new instrument that costs twice as much. Great review, everything you say is true about these Pickups.

      Its all about what kind of gear you’re using, your knowledge of that gear/how to use it, and of course recording production skills.
      What you hear in the videos isnt what I hear in the room. BUT I have worked really hard to make it as close as possible. Especially using my “Nasty Cab” IR for my recordings. Thats an Impulse Response made from my personal Speaker Cab. So the sound in the box and out is nearly indistinguishable.
      Sorry for the weird response! These pickups are incredibly versatile despite the name “Mayhem set” or “Distortion”!

    I fell in love with this set and Seymour Duncans when I got my Jackson Soloist last year. Sadly I parted ways with it because it wasn't....me. While I do miss the feel on the neck,I appreciate that it helped me realize that coming from the world of active pickups,passives can be just as good and Duncan Distortions just have it all. I literally am considering swapping the Custom 5 in the bridge position of my Dean to a Duncan Distortion. I'm sure it'll sound amazing. Jackson chose an awesome set of pickups to put in their pro series guitars.

    Really enjoyed the video! I agree that they're more versatile pickups than their name implies, I've used Distortions in a bunch of different guitars and styles. But yeah, they're amazing for Metal without a doubt! And to answer Luke's question below, I had a Distortion bridge and a Jazz neck in an LTD Eclipse for a while and thought they paired nicely, though as you said the Jazz is a bit tamer than the Distortion neck pickup so you have to factor it in. But if your guitar tends to be a bit too dark sounding naturally, the Jazz is a nice way of adding a bit of necessary brightness to the neck pickup sound. Anyhow, keep up the good work with the videos, cheers!

      Hey dude! Thanks for the question. You’re right, I didnt explain that setup very well.
      In most cases if a guitar is setup with the ability to Split the Pickups, way you do that will be with a Push/Pull Tone Pot and it will be Dedicated with to Both Pickups.
      Its not often you’ll find switches for individual pickups.

    One of the best sets ever for metal. I've used Duncan Distortions since the 80s. The JB didn't quite do it for me. I replaced a JB in a Kramer with a Distortion, and it was off the chain brutal, exactly what I wanted. I've put the Mayhem set in a lot of Schecters over the years. The Invader set is also great.

    • @MadManMusic
      @MadManMusic  Рік тому +1

      It really is a great set!

    • @angusorvid8840
      @angusorvid8840 Рік тому +1

      @@MadManMusic The Distortions are much easier to control. They are about as clear as a distortion class pickup can be, and they have terrific sustain and harmonics. Randy Rhoads used them along with a JB, DiMarzio Super Distortion, and stock PAFs in his Les Pauls. I played in the L.A. metal scene in the 80s and the Duncan Distortion was extremely popular, especially with anyone who wanted to sound like George Lynch or W.A.S.P., Crue, etc. I liked it because I was able to get that Randy Rhoads crunch when I ran it through my Marshall JMP with an MXR, the same setup Randy had, except I used Celestion 30s, he used Altec speakers. I played clubs from '86 to '93.

    • @MadManMusic
      @MadManMusic  2 роки тому

      Well you KNOW I’m gonna suggest the Mayhem Set!
      But really it depends on what style you play and what you need.
      I need Attack and Punch while still having the ability and flexibility to play Cleaner Stuff.
      If you’re playing straight metal, go with something super hi output or even active. If you’re playing classic rock go with something more medium output. Like the Jazz / JB set.
      Thats what you should think when choosing pickups.
      Also there are a TON out there and no one is reinventing the wheel. The most modern addition to pick up technology is the Fishman Fluence Pickups cuz they can be switched between Passive and Active as well as Coil Tapped if I’m not mistaken. Which is impressive if you need that!
      Hope that helps! Let us know what you decide!!

    Great playing !!! Now were talking !!! i so agree with you about the name of the Sh-6 distortion being deceiving and this pickup label as a metal/chug pickup , often called a passive emg 81 and always reviewed that way . sure It excel at high gain/metal , palmuting sound tight and clear . But it still sound great to play 80s rock plugged into in a vintage jmp, plexi amp etc.. and all type of hair-metal . i play mainly punk rock ( nofx , bad religion ) and thrash metal ( metallica , megadeth , testament ) , but with the same guitars equipped with the Sh-6 , i cover all type of 80s rock/pop from Joan jett to rick sprinfield , pat benatar etc , . Its the ceramic brother of the JB . Sh-6 on both my HSS strat and my les paul standard . This pickup can handle the most brutal distortion to the nice low- gain crunch of vintage amp .

    I'm trying to decide between these and and the JB and Jazz set. I like my clean tones and my rock/metal tones equally as much. Which should I get? And by getting the distortion mayhem, will I be sacrificing the clean tones a little bit?

    • @MadManMusic
      @MadManMusic  2 роки тому +1

      Nope. My cleans are crystal clear!
      Its all relative. If you lower your pickups a few millimeters it will have an effect on the output. The Mayhem set is higher output with some nuanced differences in tonal quality. So at this point you have to decide how much total output you need.
      The JB / Jazz is a classic hotrod set. It’ll get the job done but you may need a booster or overdrive to get those super high gain tones.
      I hope that helps! Let us know what you decide and how it works for you!

    I love that these also sound great clean. I want to install a set on my Schecter Omen Elite 6, but I'm concerned about the thickness issue. I don't want to have to get the pickup cavities routed out. I've contacted Seymour Duncan about this concern, and am waiting to hear from them. Update: Seymour Duncan confirmed what you said. My Omen has body-mounted pickups, therefore routing would be required. Guitars with pickup rings or pickguards should be okay. Looks like I'm going with a Custom 5 bridge and Pearly Gates neck. P. S.- I asked SD about the Custom 5, and it's 1.5" thick so, also won't fit my guitar. Got the 1" thick Whole Lotta Humbuckers in my cart!

    Excellent review with excellent playing! The price of guitars are going through the roof it’s almost better to buy a fender player series and then just upgrade the pick ups. Plus you know when you spend $ $2000 on a USA made guitar it’s not really wise to change the pick up so you know you’re already paying for the pick ups in there it’s kind of cool to buy a Mexican made stride and beef it out with some bad ass PU’s..
    For example I bought a San Dimas Sharvale made in Mexico and dropped some bare knuckle pick ups in it and With heavy strings for optimize D tuning and the thing is massive. The harmonics I get off that son of a gun is amazing. Now I want some Mayhem pick ups!!!

      Hi, They are slightly thicker than average pickups. Meaning they will sit a bit closer to the strings. If you're guitar has a pickguard or pickup rings you'll be able to adjust them with no problem. However if your guitars pickups are directly mounted to the body you have some clearance issues. I have had to route my pickup cavities more to allow space.

    This video has me wanting to try this set of pickups in my Jim Root Tele. I play a lot of different styles of music though. I’m torn between these and a JB/jazz set. How versatile are these? If I get them will it be just way too much output? I tune down as low as drop B mostly but the all the way back to E standard. Any and all input is greatly appreciated!

    • @MadManMusic
      @MadManMusic  Рік тому +1

      I had a JB/Jazz set once many years ago and I found that they were lacking. I use a super high gain amp (EVH) but I still needed to use an OD to push the amp to a place I felt comfortable with.
      However, with the Mayhem Set I find I jump between any tone with ease.
      Unlike with say an Active Pickup like EMGs, the Mayhem Set isn't Blown Out with Output. It's somewhere right in the middle. Which to me is perfect.

I’m curious if you know if the Distortion will do that as well? Definitely not something I want. Mainly I just want a good versatile pickup set. Most of the music I write is along the lines of, Breaking Benjamin, Sevendust, Alice In Chains, 311, POD, Deftones, Skrape, Tool, etc.
      Do you think the Distortion can handle like the funkier stuff too or would it be too much?

  • @Mister_Greg
    @Mister_Greg 2 роки тому +1

    The reason why these pickups are thick is due to the double-wide ceramic magnet. The bobbins themselves are standard. It is suspected that this pickup is just a JB with a thicker magnet, but Duncan has never verified it.

    • @MadManMusic
      @MadManMusic  2 роки тому

      Considering the JB is one of, if not, the most popular model of pickups that Seymour Duncan offers, it make sense that they would use it as a foundation to design other models.
      I have played JB's in the past and there is definitely an output difference when matched up with a high gain amp. However, the Distortion models just seem to check the right boxes for me!

      The most important thing to remember to do here is to try to match the outputs of the pickups. SD Jazz model pickups tend to be a little lower in the output. Does that mean you shouldn't match it with a distortion? Not at all, Match away. Just keep in mind they may have different levels of output volume.

    • @MadManMusic
      @MadManMusic  Рік тому +1

      Hey!
      Lets see. They obviously didnt come stock in the PRE SE. PRS prides themselves on making all off their own components. Perhaps the wiring isn’t correct. That’d be my first guess.
      Second, the Pegasus and Sentient are Medium/High Output Pickups and the Distortions are Full High Output.. so they will be louder than the others. What kind of amp are you using? However, I doubt this is playing such a large roll in the sound being bad.
      My guess is the distortions may not be wired correctly. If you installed then yourself, the Red, Green, Black, White wires on Duncans are very likely *not* the same as the PRS pickups. So if you matched them, that could be causing this issue.
      Let us know!
      🤘🏼😜

    • @acexxxoasis
      @acexxxoasis Рік тому +1

      @@MadManMusic pretty sure they are wired right the red and white wire go to the push pull for splitting, blacks to switch green and bare are to pot ground, however they were in the prs when I bought it used.
      I'm using a Wangs hd15 (slo/Shiva style amp) or my mini 5 (champ style circuit) haven't tried them out through the blue voodoo as that's already very high mid/ highs focused amp which is where the PRS sits with the distortions. I've tried lowering them into the body as when I got it they were right up under the strings maybe 1/1.5mm off the strings, that helped out a lot but didn't fall into that sweet tone spot that most of my other SD pickups do (pegasus sentient in my 7, hot for tele and various others throughout my lifetime) everything in me says I should like them. They're just so bright.
      I do appreciate you taking your time to try and assist me with this though!

      No problem dude, I’m happy to help.
      Just keep in mind.
      If you didn’t wire this yourself, and you know these are not Stock Pickups, the chances of that being this issue is nearly 100%.
      Not All Components Are Created Equally. Especially Push/Pull Pots.
      I did a video about my TE-200 (this guitar) and how I added the Push/Pull because my guitar didn’t come with one stock. So i installed that all myself. I read the wiring diagram from SD etc etc.
      However, a friend of mine asked me to do the same Mod, On the same Model Guitar, and when I tested the stock guitar it had a Push/Pull. And I thought “hey, thats great”. I wired it up and it sounds HORRIBLE…
      Turned out the Leads on the Push/Pull Pot were not arranged the same as this typical “Allparts” pot I put in my guitar..
      So.. that very well could be the issue.
      PRS is known for Push/Pull and various pickup configurations.
      Whoever installed these Distortions probably looked at a typical diagram and installed them accordingly… not knowing that these import pots aren’t the same as what’s listed on the diagram..
      I would suggest getting online, buying at least a new Push/Pull (Allparts) and install it yourself and see if there is a difference.
      Sorry for the novel..

      @@MadManMusic welp Amazon here I come lol I wanted to change the 3 way switch out for a switch craft anyway this one had a little issue where the bridge didn't want to come on fully so I cleaned it and that worked but as a gigging musician I'm sure you understand you just want a guitar to work and never be a thought again. Never even thought about the pots I never even looked to see the values on them either I guess I just assumed they would be right 😂
      Definitely deserve more than the subscribe button but I can give you that keep rocking and again thanks for the help!

    Interesting info about there size. Hadn’t even considered that. Will these fit properly in a Les Paul Standard?

    Hello from Russia. I am 18 years old and really love listening to you,Pro pain, especially when I am at home. Because I feel like my whole house will fall apart soon. Do you write music together or does everyone bring their own ideas?

    • @MadManMusic
      @MadManMusic  2 роки тому

      Hey Thanks for the question! I've been to Moscow Twice! Its awesome I love it there!
      As for the Pro-Pain writing process, we all contribute idea to Gary and he then forms song ideas from them. Then they come back to us and we iron them out and create leads. And that's it! We record what comes from that process!

    Has anyone tried sh-6 bridge and sh-8 in the neck?

    • @MadManMusic
      @MadManMusic  11 місяців тому

      An Invader in the neck position and not the Bridge position? 🤔
      Thats a lot of High Output for a Neck Pickup.. but I suppose if you’re playing a lot of leads in the neck position they’d be pretty fluid and buttery.

      @@MadManMusic I use the bridge for leads and the neck for rhythm.

      Which makes total sense! I just never thought to have such a high output pickup in the neck.. its actually a really cool idea!

      I believe you can order them with Fender “Trem” Spacing but this set is just the standard Seymour Duncan/Gibson Humbucker Spacing. 🤘🏼😜
