"Six string on my back" refers to the guitar; "steel horse" is the tour bus. This song uses Old West cowboy imagery to describe the lonely life of a rock star. At the time, starting with their debut album in 1984, Bon Jovi played about 300 shows a year, using the remaining time to work on albums. When it came time to write for their third album, Slippery When Wet, Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora wrote this song about what they knew: performing to lots of people who all blended together after a while.

Jon and Richie sound so good together
its hilarious to hear you talk about it not being intense as you pause RIGHT before it gets intense LMAO
This song came out right before my best friend was murdered in a daylight robbery, When ever I hear it, so many emotions rush thru my head, some sad, some good.
This is why reaction videos are fun. Because I have to have heard this song at least 2,000 times. I would estimate more like 7,000 times, on the radio, since it came out. And it's fun to watch someone hear it for the first time. Because it's just so damn ubiquitous and long since overplayed and overexposed
One of my all time favorite songs of theirs.
