  • There is a complex relationship between many African countries (ex: Nigeria, Zimbabwe, and South Africa) as well as the African Diaspora. The challenging and uncomfortable conversations about history, policies, and progress have to happen in order for us to achieve the Future of Africa that we all want to see.

Hey Ashley, great video. I'm glad you pointed this out. I'm black American. I have been to SA 🇿🇦 four times and love it. I remember when the first time I told my family and friends that I was going to SA and the disgusting looks I got was unbelievable. Even my mom tried to stop me from coming. When I showed my experience on my Facebook I had some friends who were like wow, I thought it was like the jungle and wilderness there. Loo. I returned and even brought some friends. The problem is that people gonna talk out of their ignorance. The same people who will spend the same amount to Las Vegas, DR, Jamaica, Bahamas, can spend the same amount going to Africa 🌍. What I don't get is those who quick to say they being oppressed in the USA but they won't consider coming to the continent Africa. That's really the problem. I have just left SA two weeks ago after spending a month there. I'm certainly looking into start a business there and even look into a second home. There is so much opportunity there. Hopefully others will take your message and take the opportunity to see what SA has to offer. 💯

Black South Africans don't need to move to the US and Europe. Everything we need is right here. We will visit and go work in those countries but we won't move permanently. The problem we have with foreign nationals from the continent is that they come here and act white. After the struggle we have waged in this country, we feel like they should be on code. But no they come here and undermine the struggle we are still engaged in.

And i'll add this one bit too about foreign Africans y'all are calling migrants but yet can't comprehend why you'd label the white ones expats. Colonization did a number on all of us .but care to explain how they are acting white because i;'d be curuous to hear exactly what constitutes as acting white in the motherland.

I would like to address the elephant in the room that says "SAns are xenophobic"! Yes we love African Americans including our brothers and sisters from other parts of the African continent. We are friendly people, but we are often misunderstood because of the propaganda spread by media that says SAns are xenophobic. No country in Africa has as many migrants from other African countries as SA. The challenge we have is that some of those migrants are in SA illegally (undocumented or forged immigration papers) as a result of them bribing Boarder Control officials. They then come to SA and take low skilled jobs which should be reserved mainly for locals. It doesn't end there, some of them commit heinous crimes (kidnappings, selling drugs, cash in transit, strip copper cables on infrastructure etc) and get away with it because their finger prints are not in the country's database. In some instances the police turn a blind eye on crimes being committed by these people because they are paying them a lot of money (This is not the fault of the criminals). All these crimes are a frustration to the locals as they see that Government isn't doing enough to deal with the issue of illegal immigrants and corrupt Government officials (Boarder control and Police) . When we then voice out our frustrations as citizens we are then called xenophobic, which is totally untrue. All what we cry out for is that all people coming to SA must do so legally, and when they are here they must respect our laws. i'm not saying SAns are saints, but we want people who will come to our country to live peacefully with us and add value to our country. We are a young democracy, with it's own challenges and yet so much potential. Welcome home Ashley and many more AAs, we love you!

We cannot be expected to carry the burden of all Africa's poor and failed states and this push against SA is mostly from people who feel that we should sit back and allow them to come here anyhow and do whatever they like without being held accountable.Recent stats show that there's about four million traceable African migrants in SA but this number is 3-5 times higher because of illegal immigration. We love Africans and we welcome them no matter where they come from as long as they come here legally to contribute in building a better SA for all.

As a South African, I appreciate your support and favour of my country. I'd like to say though that the notion that South Africans are doing "well" is quite arguable.
I think most foreigners, tend to underestimate just how crippled our economy is, and thus have a higher level of optimism about the country - which is great.
However, sentiments on the ground aren't so positive, if we're talking about the general population of citizens.
My parents generation had to battle racial oppression, which affected a majority. My generation has to battle economic oppression, which affects the entire population.
It's wild to me how the average citizen struggles to make a living in their own country, while some foreigners look at South Africa with so much promise, and seek to build their lives there.
It just feels like there's an imbalance there that I can't quite get to grips with.
That being said, I do believe in the potential we have as a nation. I just hope my kids live long enough to see it.

It’s the fact that people work three jobs and can’t keep a roof over their heads there. Our government at least gives free healthcare, free housing and free education (which illegal immigrants can also access). We aren’t a super power like America but we are holding our government accountable and there’s progress which is pretty slow for the majority especially after we got a new president who doesn’t seem to care as much as the last so he has haltered our progress in many ways. However, if Black South Africans managed to make their township economies grow during Apartheid we will do so again this time with new leadership. Younger blood is needed in power.

One thing that annoys me sooo much about these people hating on South Africa, is the fact that some of them never set foot in SA. They just speak because they've gathered information on social media and Google. Not knowing that in every CBD in South Africa there's an African foreign national shop, in townships, villages everywhere! Every damn day, there's people jumping the borders coming to SA, some have even overstayed their welcome, they came on tourist visas and have never left. Some their students visas expired but they are still here illegally. But South Africans are xenophobic.
Also, we are a young democracy we aren't gonna carry every African national, Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Chinese on our backs. When are we going to chill??? We just fought apartheid yesterday and we still fighting for land but we still have to take care of the entire African continent. Bro!!!!

It's called Jealousy, envy and plain racism against white South Africans. They hate the fact SA is so developed and go mad to see it being appreciated by others. They are quick to claim that whites are the reason for our high level of development but this they do from the comfort of their western domain. South Africans are very loving and accommodating of our fellow African family but abhor the crime and disrespect.

Foreign nationals are not a new thing to South Africans. We have been living with foreign nationals since the dark days of apartheid. Some have fully integrated into our social fabric, they married locally, have thriving families locally and there has never been an issue because the then apartheid government ensured that whomever comes into the country did it in an organised legitimate manner. Now fast forward to the advent of democracy post 1994. The now government just decided to completely abdicate the responsibility to protect her citizens. The simply removed the army that was guarding our north border and simply deployed the army to all corners of Africa where there are conflicts so they can look good to the international community while leaving the citizenry exposed to all the ills that are associated with porous borders.
I have no problem with people disliking South Africans for wanting what is best for South Africa. In fact if you think we are xenophobic and stuck up please stay away from South Africa. I will also state categorically that the reason South Africans generally find resonance with African Americans is because there is a glimmer of hope and light associated with African Americans. African Americans have actually achieved a lot bearing in mind how the got to the US in the first place and the current systematic exclusion that they are still subjected to today but still they rise. Yes I admire African Americans and not ashamed of it. I think a link up between African Americans and South Africans has the potential to shine a positive light on the whole continent.
As for our sovereignty and aspirations as South Africans, we will guard it jealously. South Africa is a beautiful country. We know exactly what we have as South Africans. We will guard and protect our country jealously. If you don't like it, by all means please stay away.

The political freedom that South Africans enjoy today came as a result of a negotiated settlement. As you know in any negotiation it's a give and take situation. Of course there was disgruntlement on both the white side who were not happy about losing their exclusive political privilege and there was discontentment on the black side from black people who felt we should just burn the whole thing down and chase the white man to the sea. This however doesn't mean that the disgruntled parties didn't form part of the settlement. After all was said and done there was an election where everyone with a sizable constituency ran for elections. The ANC won the election on a landslide and a government of unity was formed. After that the constitution of the Republic of South Africa was drafted. We all got a chance to interrogate and have a say on the constitution before it was formally adopted in 1996 which is two years after the first ever democratically elected government of this beautiful country we call South Africa today. Every government has its own detractors, in the USA they have the KKK, The oath keepers etc... In Nigeria you have Boko Haram and whatever dark shadows that exist there. The list goes on.

Wow! You have said a mouth full. You are so right about so many things, especially that statement about Hip Hop. I have to be honest, I love to travel but I've never had a desire to visit SA based on its very racist past. I accept that I myself might have my own prejudices, but we also as Africa Americans to make blanket statements when we have certain privileges and Americans. For example Africa Americans are flocking to places in Europe and saying that there is no racism. I've lived in 5 European countries and I can guarantee you that I experienced racism in every single country. Portugal for example seems to be in fashion for Africa Americans. There is no other way to say it, Portugal is extremely racist toward blacks. All of the issues that we have in the US, they have in Portugal. Yes one can get a cheap bottle of good wine but you may also be turned away from certain clubs because it's for whites only. I think it's important for blacks to talk to other blacks before they up and move to a country without doing proper research first. Black are getting attacked all over Europe. I know that many blacks think that only white Americans are racist but remember it's those same Europeans who made the US racism what it is. Brothers and sisters, please to thorough research before moving abroad, especially if you're considering Europe.

@@esengomamonga9292 you are a troll, all opportunities are open for South Africans, it will take time for Blacks to build the capital but the systems are in place, many have done well, in time we will change the narrative, you don't have to chase away Asians and whites to succeed and then ask Chinese to come build your country, South Africa is overcoming apartheid and its effects the way we want to and we have already learnt lessons from the failure of Africa as a whole in addressing these issues, calm down troll

Thank you for the information Ashley. I'd say the reason why we black South Africans are less in other countries, it's because of the love we have for our country. Our ancestors preferred to die defending their country. Me leaving my country because of the problems we have as a nation would be the greatest betrayal to my ancestors( That how I feel). If we all decide to run away from our problems, who will solve them?

Thanks so much for the info. The fact that whites dominate in land ownership and businesses, is similar to the U.S. I do appreciate your videos, have been to Africa numerous times, but I never feel good vibes about S.A. You have indeed enlightened me somewhat. BTW… you have a great speaking voice which holds one’s attention. Shalom.

I visited South Africa in 2014, and to this day, I cannot get the experience off my mind. I would like to live and do business in South Africa. I am at that point now. Maybe you could point me in the right directions. I would like to become a resident there. I will be retiring soon from the U.S.

They call themselves Assylum seekers..... we didn't. We have nothing against people coming to South Africa..... all we need is respect for our people and respect of our laws. We welcome with open hands and hearts those who come to South Africa with humility and a vested interest in our people. Those who come with good intentions and are here to help advance and enhance the lives of the people of South Africa. I really am HUMBLED by the African Americans and their positive attitude towards our country. I really get so annoyed by some African people from the continent who come here with a Superiority complex and arrogance towards the people of South Africa. If I had my way id rather have African Americans flock into this country than those entitled Africans who just come here to steal kill and destroy our country I believe out of sheer jealousy for what we have worked so hard for. Welcome to South Africa my Beautiful Sister🇿🇦🇿🇦❤❤❤🤗🤗🤗

Let's clarify the difference of treatment between black people coming from and born in African countries and those coming from and born in america or European countries. Us south Africans feel it is inappropriate and unproductive to the African development agenda if African born people in other African countries would flock to the south because this leaves their countries without the people and necessary skills to develop those countries. If we allow people to desert their countries here in Africa just to come live the soft life in south Africa, we are not going anywhere as a continent coz we need everyone to stay in their country and fix their countries so that Africa can finally be the superpower she is meant to be.
Now, on black people born in america and other white dominated country, we feel we owe them a place on the land of their forefathers, we feel they belong here and every African country should we come them because what they call home is not really home coz they were taken there by force. In south Africa, we don see people from america as better or privileged coz we see them as our brothers and sisters who need us rather than us needing them. As it is evidence in south Africa, we are doing relatively well on our own. But we want our people in America and Europe to come find a place on their motherland and get the success and peace that we have here.
When Africa flocks to one country, we have a problem coz other rich African countries are deserted just because people are either lazy to develop their own countries or are too timid to face and depose those that stand in their way of development. In south Africa, we are known to fight with anyone that stands in our way of development and we do make strategic compromises where necessary to get to a certain place on the future.

The lazy ones are not the black foreigners coming, creating business and hiring locals to support themselves and help others. The lazy ones are those native bums burning down unlucrative African businesses and killing black foreigners like kkk style because "they're stealing our jobs" weak point argument.
