Remember South Africa is more of a formal retail market whilst most of Africa is more of an informal market. Being South Africa having worked in Nigeria I realized that the average Nigerian would go to the market for groceries and clothing whilst in South Africa one would go to the mall for clothing and to a supermarket for groceries. The food industry in South Africa is strictly regulated in terms of health and pricing thus the government doesn't favour much of the open market.

As a South African I never really understood the concept of a market until I went to one in Accra, Ghana. Markets here are typically for middle class people to socialise over food and drinks and some few items to sell or buy. There is "Joburg Market" where most of the fruit and vegetables that are consumed in the city are sold. The produce from the market is brought in by large and small scale farmers. There you can get fresh fruit and vegetables in low prices.

We don’t really have like the open markets like other African countries, it’s for health and safety reasons, that is why we mostly shop in supermarkets. But there are other townships, which would have the open markets similar to those in western African countries, you will never ever find an open market in the suburbs, unless it’s a pop up farm market stalls.

When it comes to crime, it depends on who is telling the story, there are lots of expats from the USA complaining about Tanzania and the abuse from Tanzanians.
I'll search for videos and post them the link here later.
Crime is every where in the world and a lot of people don't bother to be heros any more so South Africa is not different from any country in the world.
There are lots of people from everywhere in Africa and a lot of our African friend have no jobs to support the families so committing crime is not a big problem for them.
The same goes for South Africans. Don't point a finger to South Africans because there are more pointing a you.
There are fresh foods if you know where to find it at the very cheap price.
Its not like south Africa doesn't have markets as you know it from home Tanzania or Nigeria but its difficult to reach those if you don't know where to find them.

Hi Norman, thanks for watching my video. For starters my aim is not to point any fingers as mentioned in my video, the aim was to share my experience which I know might come handy to someone out there. With regards to crime, unfortunately statistics and numbers don’t lie so you can’t argue that crime rate is not high while statistics say otherwise but also I shared my story because I experienced it firsthand as well. Again, the aim is not to bash the country, but rather share my journey and I will keep on sharing the more I stay. With regards to markets, yes the more I stay the more I will discover more places which will be shared.

Sadly crime throughout the world is growing, criminals are much bolder, and yes as a society worldwide we only care about ourselves and our immediate family. No one will help you in Johannesburg, absolutely no one, they would mug you in broad day light there, people will just pass by and continue as if nothing happened, in Villages that is where they don't tolerate such, if they see anyone stealing anything, the person will just be lucky if he/she come out alive....

Fresh produce is food that has not been preserved, and was recently harvested or slaughtered. You can find this at Checkers, woolies and food lovers market. There's usually a big sign saying "fresh produce". An alternative is to buy at a fresh food outdoor market or vendors but the food is often sourced from the same farm. Or buy directly from small or big farmers. I hope that gives more clarity.

I don't think SA has strong herbal concoctions like the rest of African countries, so I think it's safe that way. However, with vegetables and fruits I agree.

In terms of lack of markets, there are too many malls and grocery shops in SA which have unfortunately taken a lot of business from vendors, especiallyin the townships. Life in Gauteng tends to be fast paced and the grocery shops become convenient as you can find everything in one place.
Another issue that we have in SA is our town/city planning is just horrible. I stay in pretoria and over the weekend I used drive to the taxi rank to buy vegetables from the vendors but it became such a hassle that I just gave up.
Hope you are enjoying SA so far

I'm planning on relocating to tanzania. I've been to arusha, Dar, Mwanza and Zanzibar. Im highly considering mwanza because it was the cleanest. Overall, I love tanzanians and I always feel so welcomed and safe. As an american there is a lot that I dislike about Tanzania because America is more like south Africa in regard to being on time, super markets, tipping(%15), etc. I really dislike the infrastructure in Tanzania and have been recently thinking about south Africa but I honestly am not trying to leave one very unsafe and racist country to move to another. Looking to visit south Africa a few times and then make decision.

To be honest in South Africa people mind their own business. You can only be helped by the police or if someone knows you. Sometimes you'd be walking and see 2 people fighting, people won't intervene, they just pass like they don't see anything. Some would just pass and call the police to inform them. The thing is we know all the tricks used by criminals to try to get your attention.

You posted this a while ago but I saw this now, so here is something I found interesting ... I am a Saffa born and bred, and I worked and lived in mainland China for a few years. While I was there I definitely felt special and there was some "fuss" made - or so I thought. Hehehe! When I was already back in Johannesburg for a while I worked with Chinese people online and I found out much more about the nuances that I was clueless about before. I was told by a Chinese person (and others loudly agreed) that it is customary and polite for them to invite you to their house for a meal. As Westerners we very often accept these invitations and actually this makes the Chinese person cringe inside. They will never ever show this though and so the mistake is made, and no chance exists for us to learn or for them to teach us - there were a number of similar polite gestures which would be better left to quietly die away or even outright thanked but not accepted.
From my point of view I can imagine that you are very correct in saying integrating here is very difficult. All the best to you! Oh, and even if it is late - welcome to SA!!!

To be honest, you look and sound like an independent ambitious professional. On this note it should be easy with you to mingle with locals. Work, business, book clubs, church, gym, coffee shops, cafe, jazz clubs or any other kinda like entertainments, pub restaurants....give it some time.
In terms of time as a professional in business or business person, time is money Beautiful more especial in Joburg.
All the things you have mentioned, I must say it depends where you land in SA. Crime rate quite high in Joburg. Even as South Africans we rather go to the malls than down town. Crime is lesser. In general just be very vigilant all the time. In or outside your car. They snatch your phone while you wait on traffic light. While you walk on the street talking on your phone.
In terms of people helping, again it depends where you are. People don't want to be short, hence we insure almost everything in SA.
We dont really have big markets like yours in SA. We rather have street vendors or downtown. To be honest a person of your caliber doesn't really buy from there unfortunately.
Would buy in supermarkets or in places like fruit and vege.
In other smaller cities or towns or farming areas, you might find things like farmers market.
10% tip in SA is quite standard. It's because they are not the best paid but at the same time is to motivate or rather appreciate great service.
I must say, even when the service was not that good I still tip but I give the waiter or waitress my feedback and advise to improve, however, if the attitude was bad, I don't tip.
I would say 95% of the time I do though. The standard of service generaly is quite high though, however, it also depends on location again.
Wishing you all the best in my beautiful country. We really appreciate professional like you in SA. Please very careful where ever you go and even at home please practice good security. It works better if you are in a complex or estate. Proudly South African, working abroad. 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦

you are a very nice person to listen to but you could have interspersed some pics of the specific places you refer to. directly intervening in a crime would rarely be useful and of course you could be viscously attacked, better to use cell phone to take pic or video and call police, let them take required measures.
