- Steven Spielberg and 'The Fabelmans' cast chat with ET's Kevin Frazier and Nischelle Turner at the 2023 Golden Globe Awards after winning Best Motion Picture - Drama. Steven jokes about wanting to go after ET in 1981 for using the same name as his then-upcoming film, 'E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.' The 76-year-old director also opens up about how long he'd held onto the stories from his childhood, which he mirrors in 'The Fabelmans.' Actor Paul Dano, who portrays Steven's dad in the film, details how he and co-star Michelle Williams were able to channel the filmmaker's parents without feeling too much pressure. Plus, Steven shares how Ke Huy Quan, who won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor - Motion Picture, landed the part as Data back in Steven's 1985 classic, 'The Goonies.'
Spielberg is one of a kind. He is a fantastic film maker and you never hear a bad word said about him. There’s always been stories about the Tarantino’s, the Cameron’s and the Kubricks of the world but no one ever says anything bad about Spielberg. Seems like a really talented and nice dude
u never heard he directed kid actors waay past his bedtime? u never heard of... of... yeah... not much gossip with him. either he has great publicists that hide his skeletons well or he's like santa.
I love Spielberg to death. But Julia Roberts & Satyajit Ray would disagree lol
@@bill000 Ray still said he's a great director and doesn't want to cause any issues between them for this reason with lawyers. But said ET was apparently his idea not Spielbergs as his "lost friendly alien" script was circulating hollywood in the 70s. So different to Julia.
Roberts straight up hates him.
@@guileniam just because Ray complimented him doesn't mean he didn't put out negative content about him to the world
@@bill000 not really the same intent as Julia though is it?
That's the point. Different level
The Goonies is a childhood classic and a wonderful film.
Yeah, they don't make movies like that anymore.
I still watch it every year. haha
Actually it was Ke’s brother who auditioned, not his cousin, and Ke was trying to direct his brother as he was auditioning, which got him noticed!
This man brought me Jurassic Park - my all-time favorite film - AND Indiana Jones - and Ke Huy Quan played a role in that and I'll always be thankful to him and to both of them for all of it. He will never know how much his film informed the entire direction of my life (I'm a paleontologist, by the way). But I wish he could know.
So happy for Spielberg! Living legend!!!
Love Ke Huy Quan
Ke's showing up as a friend of an auditioner was SO good it nabbed him two blockbuster roles!
Indiana Jones fans would much rather have the franchise continue with short round vs Helena. What the hell is Hollywood thinking these days??? Short round is a favorite and we've all been wondering for the last 39 years what happened to him. With the resurgence of ke huy Quan it's a no brainier: either make Indiana Jones 6 starring short round OR make shortound spinoffs. Also, for all your diversity fanatics, it would also check all your boxes too! It's a win win!
I agree! I also want to see a "Goonies" sequel with Ke Huy Quan in it along with all the other child actors from the original.
@@emilyx8377 💯
I’d love to see short round back! But it doesn’t mean you have to tear down Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s character before you’ve even seen the movie! Who knows, she might be great, it’s not even out yet so there’s no way to know. Either way I would like to see him back and I’d like to see what she does! She was brilliant in Fleabag.
@@potentpuckwock3981 I agree she's very talented. I'm sure she'll do fine. But my point was that Lucas film had access to ke huy Quan all these years and didn't expand his story, and now when they finally get around to making a Indy sequel, they again ignore him and go for the strong female lead trope. Short round (pre-existing, loved character) should have come first before Helena (new made up character). With that said I really hope Indy 5 is great, and I hope Helena is great too. I'm just pointing out the hypocrisy of Hollywood.
Yo yo! Do the right thing Speilberg!!!!!! We want Ke!!!
Thank you ET for amplifying AAPI voices by echoing Ke’s statement that so few roles are made for Asian Americans!
4:12 Seth's laugh while clearly texting and not giving a shit is the best 😂
It's hilarious that I couldn't see Seth Rogen, but I knew he was there immediately after hearing him laugh
You're totally right. I re-watched the video and I think that he's standing behind Judd Hirsch but you can't see his face.
I was just thinking how strange he wasn't there, and then I saw your comment.
If you are child of the 80s, imagine if this man and his movies didn't exist.
damn! Imagine a world with no Jaws, Indiana Jones, E.T., Jurassic Park, Back to the Future, Gremlins, Hook.. it would be a sad place
As some who came-of-age in the 1980’s, we would have survived….
4:15 Seth Rogen’s laugh 😂
I love that he asks everyone if they knew Ke Huy Quran was in the Goonies.
Me.. a socially awkward person recognizing a socially awkward moment. 3:25 interviewer hits Paul and Michelle with a how do I answer that question. 3:34 Michelle gives Paul a "Please save me look" Gigachad Paul instantly knows the situation and instantly jumps into action. After the 2.3 seconds of stutter-collect your thoughts, he locks in the answer, goes with the flow, and sticks the fucking landing with a touching answer of reciprocation. 4:08 Michelle gestures a show of thanks to Paul. Paul smiles with an "all good". That's your social awkward play-by-play of the day. Or it could be me projecting lmao 😂
lololol
on point!
I'm sure Michelle could've come up with something adequate, actors train for interviews as well like it's part of acting and these are the elite.
@@Wyzzkyd in theory yes...but to be fair sometimes actors get Blindsided. Nothing against Michelle but she did look surprised but relieved when her costar answered
Love Spielberg! Made my childhood and such amazing also different films! Jurassic Park and Indy have my heart
I also didn’t notice Seth Rogen there till 0:24
wow.... he really is hiding his face.
@@stevekongliew8305 his laugh always gives him away 😂
@@TeaGamingPanda so true.. that.. so true.
4:00 for me…
that was KeHuy's brother interview originally for indiana jone, search for KeHuy interview
I was about to write that, but, to SP's credit, he was able to recall the event was still impressive after all these years and the many people he worked with in the industry.
Spielberg is the greatest
Spielberg is the most genuine, lovely man
All these incredible artists grouped together and I'm like, "Hey, Judd Hirsch! You Rock!!"
My favorite director of all time
Bless Spielberg he knows how to say no ..plus it's true ..he knows what he can or can't
Sweet hearing him talk about his mom. Leah was such a special lady. The Milky Way was always on our CA itinerary. She was one proud Jewish mom with all his movie posters up in the back hallway. My oldest took a photo of them together on our last trip before she passed. I don’t know if it’s still open, but she was what drew us there besides the yummy food.
"You don't call him Indy, You call him Dr. Jones."...🤠🤠🤠
Steven handled the question about the tequila shot with incredible grace. The choice to not drink should not be questioned. People have every right to not consume or limit their consumption of alcohol as they see fit. They owe you/us no explanation.
The Oscars were great this year. My childhood and teenage years combined into one night. Ke Huy Quan also known as Short Round won an Oscar. Jamie Lee Curtis aka Laurie Strode won an Oscar. Michelle Yeoh who was in Tomorrow Never Dies won an Oscar. Last but not least Chazz from Airheads the great Brendan Fraser won an Oscar. People who truly deserved the Oscars for their performances people who were not always A listers. People who were grinding for years to get their due finally did and it was great.
Fucking Seth Rogan, you can’t even see him but you can hear that laugh
Steven Spielberg and James Cameron
Legends
I really really really want a Shortround spinoff. Just make it happen!
‘Everyone’
Have you asked ‘everyone’ on the planet, all 8 billion of them, their opinion?
No?
Then shut it, fool.
Truly the GOAT of cinema.
I can see a scene with Indy going to visit Short Round, now a archeologist and professor giving a lecture to students just like him.
Steven Spielberg was and still is one of my big heros in life! Same like him if someone offers me Tequila, they better make sure I get into an ambulance couple minutes afterwards as well :D
at the end it was Jen who end up working with Spielberg and not Dawson 😂
I can't believe David Lynch isn't among them there. He was one of the main highlights of the movie
The Goonies is my favorite 80s film.
i would agree wiht him on that...hopefully ke will get to work with him on other of his projects
Everyone looks fabulous on the 2023 Golden globe awards
Guiness just got the best advertisement
This is a beautiful film...
Kevin Frazier is 58?? Holy Cow he doesn't look a day over 35! And Nischelle Turner is as beautiful as ever!!
“Catch me if you can” makes a lot of sense now as a Spielberg project.
I could see some of Sam Fabelman’s character in Frank Jr in CMIYC.
i didn't know Seth Rogen was there until he started laughing. lol. i love Steven Spielburg, he's like that surrogate father that some of these kids needed in those times in their lives.
Seth Rogens laugh absolutely “chews the scenery”
I think Steven could understand and love ke because Steven also grew up in America as a minority (jewish). He understood what it means to be an outsider and not have enough opportunities.
Steven Spilberg should of directed Indiana Jones 5 I'm so disappointed that he didn't return for the 5th final installment
In my mind... Spielberg ended it perfectly with Indiana Jones - The Last Crusade. It kept an open ending as he rides into the sunset for many Adventures.
Michelle is a vision 😍
Judd is like I'm invincible. Ain't a tequila shot gonna bring me down boi.
Steve needs to have Ke back for Indiana Jones 2023
Never got goonies 2.we were promised a sequel
Lmao I didn't know Seth Rogen was there until his laugh
Michelle William's dress looks fantastic.
Bravo...Mr. Director
Seth Rogen laughing at the back 😂
didn't realize Seth Rogan was there til his laugh lol 4:15
His younger brother went to audition and Ky was coaching him, not a cousin.
0:27 seth rogen laugh 😅
Like if Ke should get his own indiana jones movie!!!
You are the best
Bravo
lol at the Seth Rogen laugh in the background! XD
Haha wonderful
when people think of North America filmmaking many of us instantly think of Speilberg
3:04 This the first time I hear that Ke ccompanied his cousin to the audition. In all the other tellings it was always his brother who read for the part. Ke even said so in his Oscar speech. Now I am confused.
Steven is an old guy, old people can get confused or forget things
"We retired his number". Oh that's some B.S. Steven. Make a goddamn Short Round movie!!
He meant it as nobody could be recast as that character. Only Quan can play him.
I was like...Why the hell do I keep hearing Seth Rogan laugh??? Ope, cuz he's there. lol
goddens bless eeonyye
Lol didnt even realize Seth Rogan was there in the background
Spielberg and Cameron is totally opposite upbringing-wise. Both are great director, one is cocky the other is superdown to earth.
Was that Seth Rogan’s laugh at 4:14?
Well I wouldn't be shocked if Disney took the idea up with Ke in making a short round spinoff for Disney TV. There always looking for ideas.
I wonder why Steven didn’t cast Jewish people as his parents. He made a point of casting Hispanic actors in his remake of West Side Story. That being said, Dano and Williams are both very good in The Fabelmans.
I feel bad that Spielberg has had to constantly answer questions about Way Ke Huy Quan when his most personal film of his career is what he's there for.
Yeh talk about bad timing. To be fair I honestly thought a film like EEAAO would get a laugh out of the Oscar's or never get nominated because of the wackiness despite a moving story. I like to think alot of old producers thought that way about it, and thought something like the fablemsns would get more awards.
Spoiler alert Seth Rogen is in this video the whole time, but you won't realize it until you hear him laugh, 5 seconds before the video ends.
Is Seth Rogan wearing a pink suit?! 🤣🤣🤣
R U KIDDING ME??? Y CANT THEM TALK ABOUT KE??
i only see the riddler and female venom
Lol! 😂 I’m sorry, I Love Stephen Spielberg like everyone else, but can only wonder what it’s like to be surrounded by a Troupe pretending to be captivated & engulfed by Everything you say when most are hardly taking it in? 😂 Again, I’m sorry, but very obvious, all in the eyes! 👀
3:07... Damn, Spielberg doesn't even know that Ke's Brother is the one who auditioned for the part not his cousin. Ke has said this in many interviews. Seems like Spielberg is really good at acting like he gives a shit.
Given his age, it's safe to assume Steven is from that generation to not keep up with social media and watch interviews of all his friends.
Steven probably only met ke's brother that one time from the audition. Didn't directly talk with him that much. I'm not surprised he forgot who the brother was exactly. Steven was pretty much only focused on ke.
Just to let you know, for more than 30 years, Steven has always sent a Christmas or bday present to ke.
I argue Steven truly does care for ke, but not as close as people might imagine.
Michelle Wiliams now has such a perfect nose (thanks to plastic surgery).
cringe
I vividly remember being a kid in the early 80s hearing "ET" was going to be on at like 7pm on TV, and I always got so excited because I thought they meant "E.T." the movie! It's SO funny to see this acknowledgement from Stephen regarding the show having the same acronym as his movie!
I remember seeing “Sally Jessy Raphael” in the TV Guide and excitingly changing the channel for a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles spin-off.
Spielberg never puts black people on the screen. Indiana Jones has yet to meet a black person and he travels the freaking world!!!!
Amistad.
The Color Purple
And Indiana Jones met Captain Katanga in Raiders. So I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about
@@alexguerrero4497 just another “woke” ignorant that spews opinion as facts
Wake up 😅
did the interviewer really have to bring up the "seen as an Asian" part? Totally inappropriate and awkward in front of the cast of another movie.
Why - that’s the reality of the Hollywood industry?
@@annushankar3032 true dat.
When will this guy make a movie about the suffering of the Palestinians?
I think he already did. It was called Munich.
