Tracking my time comes second nature to me for the most part, but what helps me the most is to designate certain times for when I need to do certain things within my routine. I’ve tried writing it all out on paper, but looking at that visual overview with the time frames just overwhelms me, so I’ve learned that temporarily checking a clock helps most. Thanks for sharing your experiences with this, Matt! 😊
Listen Matt, you should definitely try to use Trello for organization (even though it's originally a project management app) - It also syncs into both your phone and web browser, and allows 1 free addon in the free version, which sould be google calendar to make migration super-easy. I should state that I have no ties whatsoever to the company/developers, just my personal experience to recommend from. Now why use it? Every calendar you have now can be translated into a board, which you'd divide into subcategories that are lists of cards - which can contain a date (deadline), a checklist, a description and a comment section - great for when you share a project board, but I also use it to write my reflections after completing a task card, It's a strange feeling for me to promote a product like this, but it truly leveled up my productivity - and I just can't get over having my lists & events in the same place (and the victorious feeling of grabbing that one pesky card from ToDo and move it to Done/Archive list)
I have a friend who does something similar but a little weirder he records things like the # of sneezes, and # times he goes to the bathroom, whether it was #1 or #2 and how long it took - FOR AN ENTIRE YEAR and THEN he graphs this shit and notices trends and stuff like how at his new job, he took FEWER trips to the bathroom that took longer bc he'd be nervous settling into his job and basically hold his pee until last possible minute hahahaha every new years he modifies what he counts LOL isn't it fascinating? imagine if he made a video on that hahah

Once you start scheduling your day with time slots you start to realize that your day is limited and that you can only do so much. This makes your expectations so much more realistic and you can actually feel like you accomplished something at the end of the day, because you did everything you set out to do, instead of checking things of an never ending to-do list.
Some moths ago I tried it, but the problem was that I could never accomplish what I had to do. It took me more time to finish certain tasks and I end up doing almost nothing from what I scheduled.
@@jacklozada3290 hmmm. Sounds like you need to observe exactly how long it takes you to complete your tasks and make your schedule based off of that so it's more realistic.

Have you ever tried moleskin timepage? It’s a fantastic time management app that monitors your minute to minute for you it also tells you how much time you’re spending on each location and how much time will it take you to get to that location in synchrony with your calendar
Matt i have one question for you. How do you find the will power to take up on all of these new ''lifestyles''/projects/experiences and continue following them strictly for months?
I feel like if some people did this, they'd overthink it and end up not getting anything good out of it for fear of failure. However, thank you for this video! It's always great to see your own experience and perspective.
This is what I was going to say. It would be easy to get obsessive about it and end up feeling guilty for your micro time use. It also takes time to do!
I’ve met some who do freak about having their time this structured, but then will spend a whole day on Netflix & YT. If you work in an office job with deadlines, I really recommend using your calendar, especially in Outlook. I open Outlook each day and the calendar lists my agenda, really reduces the stress & decision fatigue.
I need to get more organized with my day to day life this could probably help cause I always feel like have no time to be productive and get things done.
I’ve had the same experience through bullet journaling. I used the first fifteen minutes of every work day just planning and prioritising tasks, and the last five to migrate un finished work to next day’s to do’s. I can’t remember why I stopped, might have been summer vacation and less need for structured days of study time. I regret that now. Should start again 😂
So when exactly did you plan your days/weeks? Every morning? Every evening for the next das? Or every Sunday for the next week? And how did you make sure you do the things you should do?
I think the takeaway is something I read From Jason Statham: "[Write down everything. So when you have a beer and a banana, you write it in your little black book. Then you'll see it, and know you've fucked up.]"
I started tracking like this after my daughter was born and it was such a massive help to manage my expectations of what I could get done each week. Without time blocking I would've felt like a failure but this let me see just how much I was actually accomplishing every day.
I think this was mentioned, did you stick to your timelines pretty closely? Would you have days like this, for example: eg/ if you got absorbed or in a flow with editing, would you “ignore” or push back the next items in the calendar and keep the momentum? Or would you pretty much stick to the schedule outline? Just curious what happened if you ever got “in the zone”.
I’m tracking lots of activities for my PhD - I’ve been looking for a simple and effective tool. Just looked at Google calendar and it’s exactly what I need... great vid Matt thanks for the tips and tricks.
How do you plan things that have a dynamic timeframe? As a developer I “guess” on forhand I need X amount of time for project Y, but when im on it, it may take couple of hours more or less.

Aw, I thought this was going to be a "reverse calendar" as in you update it at the end of the day based on what you actually accomplished. That way you can compare a week's actual outcomes against how you planned them. Then you can study your expectations and also the typical flaws in your planning.
I heard on Twitter that it was better to keep a "Done" list than a "To do" list, because reviewing the first makes you feel good and inspires you to do more and looking at the second often creates a feeling of overwhelm, or at least anxiety. You know, I tried it, and I really like keeping a "done" list!
@@Jannyl13 Not really. If it's not important enough to make it a point to schedule a specific time for it, it's probably not worth doing at all. For daily habits, I make a specific mark on my calendar to make sure I keep up on it.
Interesting concept! I never schedule things for a specific time because I tend to overestimate how much I can do in a certain time. But after reading your idea, I'm curious to see if I'll find a way to improve my current system by including some kind of "done list"
To everyone planning to track the routine: I suggest you IFTTT with some applets (like button click, to calendar or notes) to help you reduce the time you'll eventually spend on adding events. Pretty simple to understand, you select a service to start an action and another service where the action is "stored" in another service. Could be interesting a video like _"how IFTTT saved me a lot of time"_ or something like it. I've been using it for 2 years or more.

@@Jannyl13 Not really. If it's not important enough to make it a point to schedule a specific time for it, it's probably not worth doing at all. For daily habits, I make a specific mark on my calendar to make sure I keep up on it.
Love!
It’s crazy how you’re giving me always something to solve the problems in my life, when I really need them to be solved !
God bless you
This is the first video of yours that i watched.
All this planning, does it not eat up a large chunk of each day or each week?
"spooning peanut butter"
