Today I wrote down in my notes where my life is at right now. I’m a second year college student, I don’t have a job currently and have $4 total in my bank account. I only have about a year worth of credits in college because last year I played college baseball and didn’t really care about my classes much. I’ve since quit baseball and have been at home this year taking online classes. Found Matt’s channel not too long ago and it’s been motivating me to get out and do more. I’ve been going back to the gym and been tracking my college schedule better. Matt, you helped me get out of my room and go do something with my life when nothing else was even slightly motivating me. I have a job interview for a part time position later today, and I just wanted to let Matt know how much he’s helped me get on the right track to just get things done. God bless you Mr. Matt

I tried the Pomodoro technique for a long time, but it wasn't great for me because I felt like my flow was constantly being interrupted by the breaks. What I do instead now is a system I came up with myself: the last-digit rule. I write down the exact time on the clock when I start working, and I tell myself that I can only stop when the time ends in that same digit. So if I start at 12:21, I can stop at 12:31 or 12:41, 1:01, etc. When I get absorbed in the work, I continually miss my next chance to stop working and I wind up working large chunks of time straight. When I need a break, I keep an eye out and I really do stop when the digit arrives, and then I take time to check my phone, etc. This makes it a lot easier to start working, because I know every time I start the clock I'm not in for a long arduous work session - I can stop in as little as ten minutes, and I'm in complete control of how long I work! It's so much less stressful than the Pomodoro technique, at least for me.
I desire your self discipline...
That's genius!
I just want to let you know that this method works for me. For the last two months I've been able to continue my study without worrying about the breaks, and when I decided to take a break, I wouldn't have to wait for more than nine minutes. Thank you for the great idea!

Great advice. Procrastination stems from past experiences of doing difficult work. Your brain stores the memory as an emotion, and seemingly difficult tasks triggers the emotion, which in turn, puts you off wanting to do the task. It's important to get to the root of the issue in order to sort it out.

I resonate with this. I got my 'warning' in my second year of university. A big near miss. I decided I was never going to do that again. In my final year, I made the decision I was doing everything at the earliest opportunity, not the latest, and I started reading ahead of lectures rather than reading behind. The irony is, not only was my third year the easiest year I'd had, I actually created MORE time for me. Nowadays I teach on this topic myself. Thanks for sharing this great video.

1. Resume doing a previously started task for 30 mins
2. Number 1. will get the brain working so you can enter flow
3. Dopamine will help you learn and be productive, so going to a new coffee shop to do work will release some
4. Use the pomodoro technique (25 minute work blocks with breaks) it adds urgency
5. Create smaller deadlines
bless you
6. Tie the task to rewards so you'll be a lot more motivated to do it, especially the one's you really don't want to do. Such as doing dishes
Thank you so much! Have a great day 🌻
You just made forget how to say thank you. Oh wait! THANK YOU ❤️
Zach Zambuto why’d you have to spoil it
The pain of waking up and having the urge to play instead of going straight to work - I felt that..
1. Change your environment - like doing work in a new environment like a different coffee shop
2. Setting timers (25min work and 5 min rest)
3. Setting additional deadlines for big projects
4. Scheduling regular meetings
5. Creating rewards for the work you have done.
Jerry Jacob is my 5 min rest becomes 4 day rest
@@anssa6163 mine too...
See the thing is rewards are bad for me because, I feel so entitled to overly reward myself. Say I study for 25 minutes, I would give myself 2 hours to play around and end up forgetting the work. nothing has worked for me I might need counseling for this TT
Oh, so making your environment productive?

Here's a tip to read when reading textbooks: *listen to themed music*
For example if you're reading about medieval times put on instrumental medieval music or if you're reading about ancient egypt put on instrumental ancient egyptian music.
It helps you to feel like you're in that time era or at least be able to visualize what you're reading better
Try it and see if it works for you, it definetely worked for me!
Such a piece of great advice you did put out there - matching music almost always helps.

Great tips in this video. My personal tips:
1. Focus on completing tasks rather than postponing them to better take advantage of your free time.
2. Spend some of your free time on activities that guarantee value and personal growth
3. Identify your Bermuda triangle (3 social media accounts) to understand how your time is spent
4. Make a simple To-Do-List to track your various tasks, to avoid forgetting and accumulating unexpected work - as well as completing them one by one.
5. If things still aren’t going as well as they might, make a schedule to properly manage your time.
6. Distinguish and separate when you use time for work, free time & free time with added value and growth.
7. Use some free time to produce rather than consume
8. Find a passion to develop and don’t worry if it changes overtime.
These points serve as a guide that will help you mitigate and reduce procrastination - don’t worry about completing each and every point, you can begin with one point and slowly start climbing up.
the storytelling element of this video is so amazing. Everything is very relatable. I didn't really take out something new from the video but good stuff.

5 'flow' triggers
- Risk
- Novelty
- Complexity
- Unpredictability
- Pattern Recognition
Seems like risk is the one that fits with procrastinating. It's risky to start late, and so you have to focus really hard to meet the short deadline
@@e_viola i had been doing this but sometimes i would struggle to get out of bed and do the work. the best thing to do is work outside or in a different room and work once each day not all monday or all friday. a white board also helps because you are constantly reminded of your tasks. hope this is helpful

@CrazyRussianDiaries then you use it like a you would use a none wireless telephone. Make the call and then hangup. What could take 10 minutes now takes 30-60 minutes on the internet because you'll do 5 things that have nothing to do with the actual task at hand. The internet is a tool. Use it as such or it will use you. Xx
@CrazyRussianDiaries we're dopamine addicts, the internet our dealer
@Nadezda Toomik Yes to a point. I'm a head baker at an artisan bakery with 6 full time staff so it's easier for me, I don't use the internet on a mobile device before 5pm Mon-sat and Sunday is casual internet day. My staff don't use the internet during the day other than on their lunch break or for a business related task. I'm fortunate to have a flow state job, where being in the moment is demanded in order to do the job well and if you leave that flow state the products and therefore the business can be affected negatively. But 8 years ago I used to be Infront of a computer all day, I also grew up as a child without the internet. But I'm happier and more fulfilled now then I've ever been
Cutting Internet completely isn't good idea,, use internet as reward,, life will be easy
The fact that I’m here when I have two exams tomorrow means that I need this video.
@Timo Koreman Just a friendly reminder, It's still not too late (unless you're at the exam). Last year I managed to fail an exam just because I thought it was too late to cram so I went to sleep while one of my close friends who actually sucked at studying pulled an all-nighter and managed to get a decent grade. Best of luck to you.
Great video! Thank you!
I took some notes for you guys:
- Set an alarm for 1 hour and work during that time. No distractions. After the alarm rings you are allowed to take a break.
-Divide a big project into small milestones with deadlines.
-Reward yourself when you do what you said you where going to do, guilty free.
As a programmer, I find solutions via software. I coded the simplest thing ever: A timer that reminds me every minute to keep working using a beep. When things go smoothly, I adjust it to 2-3 or sometimes 5 minutes. My main issue with procrastination was that I fell into it very easily. With a timer, I remind myself to keep working, and it feels like my judging myself (it really helps for me).

I’ve had a problem with this for a while, trying to make things as perfect as possible, shit even before I clicked this video I had to force myself to do it, almost added to “watch later” and I knew then and there that was me procrastinating. I have nothing to do rn yet I still was gonna watch this productive video later
Cam Starting is the hardest part! Organizing the day can help quite a bit too 😄
You've literally spoken on my behalf
I guess I'm a really good procrastinator because my watch later list is already full... (it maxes out at 5000 btw.) I've got to go to download the videos on the UA-cam app using my mobile data instead of Wi-Fi because I have the setting that only lets you download the videos on Wi-Fi, but that's fine because it acts as a sort of second watch later list in a way because it stores the channel's name and the videos title to view along with the thumbnail without actually downloading the video. That secondary "watch later" list is over 3000 videos...
I'm at a standstill because the videos could be helpful to me, but I don't know if they will be until I watch them, but I don't want to watch them in case they aren't helpful because that would be wasting my time...
Fun times...
