Even to this day, Toyota sell the manual transmission rear-wheel-drive Mark X GRMN sedan in Japan for enthusiasts (no turbo there, but the naturally aspirated V6 has a pretty good output). Not to mention the homologation specials Toyota have made over the years like the Celica GT-Four and the Yaris GR which everyone is currently raving about! Or the MR2 for that matter? :)

Celiac with a 3sfe engine is toothless...
      With a 3sge engine it's. ....OK

As yamaha...who made the cylinder heads extracted 98% of that engines capability. ....
      Unless it's a beams engine...Which

      The 3sgte engine or turbocharged

Very tunable......but extremely expensive to tune....I know
Because the celiac gt4 shared the
Same engine with the turbo mr2.

      One....a wide body with 540hp

The saab 93 2.0l turbo is a lot less
Expensive to tune for high numbers
      And....being on my 4th now.....
The celica does not even come close.
      Celica designed mid seventies
      Produced late eighties
Rear vision impaired , and the

I had one to, and drove that bad boy to Las Vegas, NV. from Central Tx and back, during the summer, and the only problem I had, was a flat tire coming back to Tx. I mean, if you want to see what your car is made of, drive it 2000, miles to Las Vegas, and back, and you will find out. The car is definitely uncomfortable and noisy, like a volkswagon, but they will last forever.

I've just watched the first part of this video. The car shown in the top right side of the screen is now what is referred to as the classic 900 - not the G.M. 900. Saab went bust not because they were spending money on repairs but because they built cars to a standard not a price and they were virtually hand assembled. That's when the rot set in because G.M. bought them and did what they did to all makes that they bought.
The classic Saab 900 is built like a tank with a build quality to make a G.M. executive weep. For the home mechanic the car is a joy to work on with everything easily accessible. The key to longevity - as in all cars - is regular oil changes with the correct oil - semi-synthetic for the low pressure turbo and fully synthetic for the full pressure turbo. Every 10,000 miles and don't forget the filter change whilst you're at it.
To dismiss a brand like Saab is a very odd thing to do for a spanner man.
You want an expensive car to maintain? Buy a BMW, Mercedes, or Subaru.

To start of with him saying that you should avoid SAAB's because it has turbochargers, almost every single 4-cyl engine today is coupled with a turbo, if people were avoiding turbos like the plague, manufacturers wouldnt put turbos in their cars.
SAAB didnt bankrupt because their cars were expensive to repair (or had alot of issues), GM owned SAAB at the time they bankrupt, they had to kill some of their brands to stay alive, SAAB was one of them. SAAB themselves didnt bankrupt because of their cars, GM did.
On his topic about parts for SAAB's being hard to find, i cant speak for the pre-GM era because im from Sweden and parts are everywhere. GM took over in 2000 and i would assume that the SAAB's from that era is the most common ones on the road today. The 9-3 from 2003-2014 are based on the GM Epsilon platform, where cars like the Chevrolet Malibu, Cadillac BLS, Pontiac G6 and the Saturn Aura shared alot of parts with the 9-3. Cars like Chevy, Cadillac, Pontiac and Saturn sure as hell doesnt sound Swedish at all, parts for atleast the 9-3 are common in the US. I cant speak for the 9-5 since ive only owned 9-3's but im sure the 9-5 shared some GM platform after they aquired SAAB.

especially during the financial crisis GM was bleeding in warranty repairs on SAABs SOOOO BAD that it had no choice but to pull the plug (they also pulled the plug on Suzuki, Isuzu and Opel). But it was GMs fault because they ordered Saab engineers to produce a V6 and offer a 4x4 drive for the US. Saab engineers were dead on against that saying "that we've been driving on snow and ice for years and our 4cyl are just fine. Saab was actually developing the modern 2.0T that currently manufactures including Mercedes AMG use and they are 4sec engines. GM asked Saab to develop a v6 and XWD which were great for markets like Alaska, or Colorado but in most of US completely useless. For example, GM abandoned the XWD in their Caddys SLRs and went with a 3.0L non-turbo V6 which produced the same power, same 7sec 0-60 with better fuel economy than the Saab 9-4trim, because Saab 9-4 was some 500lb heavier that GMs SLR.

One thing to keep in mind with Scotty is that his stance towards vehicles is that of longevity without breaking the bank. In the clip you included, the guy asking the question about the Saab specifically said he didn't want to break the bank with it. All the points Scotty brought up wasn't exactly incorrect, example, turbos are expensive and parts in general for a Saab are expensive. Scotty also rips on pretty much anything that is not a Toyota. I feel like you're a Saab enthusiast that simply took offence to what he said. I call click bait, and there is no need to call anyone stupid based on an opinion.

I drove a friend to his mechanic in my 2008 9-5 to pick up his car. As I was backing out of his garage the mechanic came running up to me to tell me that one of my backup lights was out and that he could fix it. I calmly explained that the 9-5 only has 1 backup light. Yikes!
My 2008 9-5 has 93,000 miles. Has never left me stranded. A total of $2,700 has been put into the car since new, including oil, tires, fluids, hoses, suspension, DIC, suspension, valve body and exhaust. All have been wear parts and preventative maintenance, except for a $50 heater bypass valve replacement.

First off, love your vids and all the work you do to post and keep everyone updated with your Saabs...most particularly your latest acquisition on the TurboX! Super sweet and pretty rare! Congrats man! As a fan of Saab cars, since early 80’s, and before I could drive, have embraced everything quirky and unique about the brand and the way they build vehicles. Also saw the video Scotty did and wholeheartedly disagreed with everything he said regarding Saab’s and owning one! There’s plenty of beautiful and meticulously maintained Saab’s both on the road and in dealerships and there’s a reason, people that know the brand know it very well, those introduced to it are surprised by the many clever thoughts to detail, function and craftsmanship but without all the garish excesses of some of its competition and most of all ease of basic repairs ie: complete hub/hearing assembly! So, so glad you made this video as a response to Scotty, because it’s obvious he’s never owned a Saab or spent a considerable amount of time in/around/with and under one or else his opinions and advice would have been much different. And ALL Saab people know the brand was basically killed off by Govt.Motors because Saab engineers wouldn’t completely give in to their demands to cheapen the brand to the low standards of their vehicles!

Scotty is right in the sense that a Saab is not a good choice for the general public since parts and service, if you can even find someone to do it are going to be pretty expensive. Most mechanics won't go near them. But as someone who started out with a 78' turbo 99 and has lived with, worked on and ended up with about 12 900s over the course of almost 30 yrs, most of which I still have, I think they are probably about the best cars ever made for multiple reasons, one of which is the forged steel hardened crankshaft and hood that easily comes off with removal of 2 bolts for unparalleled engine access. The turbo has never been a problem though I have replaced the bearings in one once. Not that difficult. Turbo should be allowed to cool down for about a minute at idle before shutting down the engine and synthetic oil is recommended. Replacing the steering rack is a bitch, replacing the driver side motor mount requires a special coil spring compressor. Work on the alternator, waterpump, power steering pump or crankshaft pulley replacement up against the firewall is somewhat tricky but not all that bad. Worst thing is the weak differential pinion bearing on the end of the transmission shaft. That is the real achilles heel of these cars (99, 900). They beefed up the bearing somewhat in 89" , but still not that robust. Done one of them and it's pretty involved. Might as well just keep the car for parts. The transmission oil is often neglected and there are stories of oil change places draining the trans dry thinking it was engine oil. Oddly they like plain 30# motor oil not 90# gear oil. Like an old Harley or British bike, if you're not rich or don't work on it yourself, you probably shouldn't own it.

I have a 9-3 with 270,000 miles on it, has the original clutch and turbo, no rust, runs great. But Scotty is right. They stopped making the 900 20 years ago and the car has 200,000 miles. My Saabs been great and I'll keep it as long as it runs but I wouldn't have bought it if it had been as old or had as many miles as this 900 has. And Saab parts ARE expensive! And the resale value of them is crap since they don't exist anymore. Saab does have some benefits, they are super safe cars as far as impact tests go, they are fun and handle nicely, and you can buy them cheap since the company no longer exists. But Scotty is giving advice to people who haven't yet spent their money, and he doesn't want someone to come back and say, "Hey you told me to buy this car and it had all these problems." Any car that is 20 years old and has 200,000 miles is going to need work, why would he tell people to buy it?

The rest of my family owned Saab’s purchased both used and new. They were all 5 speeds and quite reliable. I loved my Saab and really wish that when the transmission blew up, I changed the transmission out for a 5 speed instead of installing a rebuilt automatic. I loved my Saab when it was running. But it did cost me crazy amounts of money to keep it on the road. How many of you have went to a service station for an oil change or battery service and the mechanic couldn’t figure out how to open the hood? Fact #1 TRUE the 900 is a $900 car (he never said it was a bad car), #2 TRUE warranty repairs for GM got so high, especially on their V6 and XWD that it was exactly that straw that broke the camel's back, #3 TRUE any mechanic shop in Sweden will fix Saab but hardly any in US (and I am speaking from experience here) #4 TRUE for first car it is not a smart choice and that is really his bottom line. We cannot expect most people to be car enthusiast like us. BTW Consumer Reports backs Scotty on this.

      @jacobyo99 5 років тому +3

One of the best cars Saab ever made isn't saying all that much. Even if it is reliable, it would still be a ridiculous choice for a first car. When something does break (which every car does sometime), most mechanics are incompetent to work on Saabs. Saab-specific mechanics are few and far between as well as being very expensive. Parts are also hard to find. Furtermore, the absolute newest a Saab 900 could be is a 1998, which is already a 20 year old car. The first generation, which is supposedly more reliable, was released 40 years ago in 1978! No teenager should be driving a 20-40 year old car with no airbags or ABS in the older ones, and no stability control in even the newest ones. A teenager also does not need a car that will require lots of maintenance, because it is either going to be expensive to pay someone to do it or too difficult and time consuming to do at home. The ideal first car would be a 2003-2008 Toyota Corolla. However, if you want stability control (which I think is absolutely necessary for new drivers), then my best suggestion would be a 2006-2008 Hyundai Sonata, which was my first car. It has 6 airbags, stability control, and is big enough that you aren't going to die if a pickup truck hits you.

Now for those of you whom do know know how important that is, the Saab has, well mine, had 5 modals that controlled some part of the car, steering, trans track, or other, THE REASON THEY ARE IMPORTANT.... is they control the security of the car so a thief cant steal you car, well the Saab. This sounds great but you CANT just buy another module, they don't make them anymore... no, not even the new Chinese company your thinking of, their that complex. You can have them repaired but they cost between 4-7K depending on which modular and their is a minimum 6 month wait list, so get in line. I first owned a used 1999 900 SAAB Convertible with over a 100K+ miles on the odometer and was a great car. Sold it in 2012 and the same day I purchased a used low mileage (@30K miles) 2008 SAAB 9-3 2.0T Convertible, a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder that makes 210 hp and 221 pound-feet of torque, with front-wheel-drive. I've driven it as my full-time personal vehicle, living in different States (for my contract work) (usually 4-16 month stays) all over the Midwest (IL, IN, MO, WI, MI, KY, OH, PA) and then to the Southwest (via IN, IL, MO. OK, TX, NM, AZ), and all over AZ. Then 14 months later returned to the Midwest (via AZ, NM, TX, AR, TN, KY, IN), and 3 months later another R/T road trip to Tampa (IN, KY, TN, GA, FL). Currently has 204K+ miles and the engine continues to run smooth and quiet with that good, distinctive sporty sound from the exhaust system.

I loved Saab. I had a 9000 CDE. Those cars can last forever if you take care of them. Of course they're expensive to maintain because they were an expensive car and the parts are expensive just like any other luxury brand lol. So no, you don't necessarily have to be able to work on it yourself. You just need to understand that it's going to be expensive to have someone else work on it just like a Mercedes, BMW, or any other luxury brand. College kids and such used to buy 900s because those things were indestructible and lasted forever. Here in New Hampshire, you saw 900s everywhere so there are plenty of Saabs in junk yards and stuff for parts

Scotty is very entertaining and has been wrenching for more years than most. What he doesn't consider is that, if you don't like a certain car maker, owners of those cars are going to avoid you like the plague. I have had not one, but two SAAB 900s which were driven hundreds of thousands of trouble free miles. Seventeen years ago used parts were plentiful, but I am sure those sources are drying up. Scotty would be pleased to know that I am on my third Toyota pickup, but I also like cars that have some character, which Toyota Tacomas also happen to have...at least the older ones do.

SAAB didn't go bankrupt because their cars were expensive to fix.. think about that statement, that is stupid unless the dealership's bared the burden of cost and did repairs for free, which I'm pretty sure they didn't.. SAAB'S are expensively engineered, new technologies, full in-house built cars completely different than the Chevrolet platform vehicles they had to work with in the last year's of production after their bailout by GM.. They changed everything and built it all better, as topgear famously said, they didn't realize where all the money went until they crashed the cars. They were built far superior in every way compared to the GM vehicles. This translated into the bankruptcy over time. 😁 I'm totally with you man, this guy needs a history lesson!

Dealerships are paid a different much lower hourly rate for warranty repairs. If you tie up your shop lifts with warranty, the more lucrative COD work can't be done. In the end having the same techs in a small dealership work on SAAB, Opel, Subaru, and GM platforms is a recipe for bankruptcy in your shop. .

    @larukul2762 5 років тому +1

Mechanics generally do not like Saabs as it takes more time to repair than a Japanese car, plus that they cannot rip Saab owners off unlike those of Audi owners. A mechanic told me he used three times the labor hours to replace an Audi water pump than a Saab's, but then he could charge hefty prices on an Audi. Saab owners usually know how much the parts cost. In the end, if you did not do your own research, you would not end up buying a Saab. Scotty's videos are usually good but this one, it's either he did not do enough research or he's speaking too much for mechanics out there.

I just want to let this young aspiring mechanic know that you are too young to be an expert on Saabs or cars in general. To say that Scotty is ignorant about cars is crazy. Many of you young kids take apart and replace a few parts of a car engine then go to youtube thinking that you are master mechanic. Scotty have been working on cars almost three times the years you been alive . When he speaks about a particular car or make, he is generalizing according to his vast experience working with cars. I have been working on cars for 40 years and I'm also an engineer, so i know a little about cars, and I clearly understand Scotty. We are all bias about cars according to our own experience, specially when working on them. I may not agree with some of his assessments because my experience may be slightly different, but I completely agree with him that Japanese cars are the most reliable (specially Honda and Toyota) and I also agree that many of the European cars are money pits. Specially German cars.

Hi autopsy, I know it’s an old video but I just wanted to share my experience with saab.
My saab is a 9-3 sportcombi from 2007, a vector model here in europe (I know that in America the trim level are different from here, it’s basically an Arc, I think at least😂), and this car has been owned by my family since it was Made
I have to say, I never, and say never, drove a car so nice, precise, reliable (well, unfortunatly it has a diesel engine and it was one of the first car with egr and apf, so we had a lot of problem related to that stuff but we just removed those thing and never heard anything about them anymore lmao), comfortable and even fun, from my point of view at least.
I just love this car with all of my heart, it’s like part of the family to me, only problem is it’s starting to show her years, the rear suspension are just gone and like this is very undrivible, the engine is still in very good shape, me and my father kept the maintance in check every 6000/7000 miles, despite some issue that we are still trying to figure out the car runs and drives very well (I have a strange rattling like bearing noise when the car is at low rpm but when a gear is inserted, quite strange but next month I’ll tear her down and figure out what the problem is)
Other problems that this car has is the paint and the overall shape of the exterior, fortunatly I don’t have rust at all on the body, just some minor rust in the engine bay.
I’m telling u all of this cause I really really want to restore her and I really hope to be able to do so during next year (i’m actually studying to get a truck driving license but I’m also still studying for university, and with the license i’ll start dumping some money into the car, i basically did this just because i wanted the money to fix this car, from this u can understand my level of commitment to this car😂)
Saab is just a part of me at this point and I swear that my saab will never see a junkyard in her life ever, she’ll die with me
This is the last thing, other then my saab i wish that i’ll be able to buy a 9-3 turbo x just like yours some day, it’s basically my favorite saab and I really love that model, here in europe are actually even resonably cheap (15 to 20K) so I hope to be able to own ine of thise some day.
Thank you for inspiring my love for this car brand each day, where I live no one really consider saab like an enthusiast but I’ll never stop loving them despite this
Who knows maybe some day I could start a UA-cam channell on saabs too!
    Thank you for listening
    Sincerly

I have only one problem with the saab and that is the electronics of the car as i am standing around 5-6k EUR per year in service. Well I drive like a maniac and is modified, that's my Saab 93 aero but the 9000 I swear that car doesn't have a problem and I forced it to its maximum. Everyone said to me to sell the 93 cos it cost me a lot for such an car, but I love that car is my first car, and I have drived quite a number of cars including bmw m, mercedes amg. And Audi rs7. Non of this monsters could have stabilize as well as the aero 93. I love that car I will never sell it. Quick story as I was driving with 200km on a shitty international road my esp sensor failed and in a quite a large corner the car started sliding due to winter wheels ( it was spring) I didn't had half of experience with driving at that point that I possessed now, the car just came fluently back and stabilize. My hear probably was beating at 170bpm at least and probably face white. But the car literally came back on the road by itself. Maybe it was luck and undiscovered skill but I could ve died in that point so yes thank you Saab. I have drifted with a lot of cars on the track and still that 93 aero 2003 I feel it like one of the most stable and durable car I have drove from let's say any car between 5k to 100k$ . Someone that lacks the knowledge or the ability to learn says things like that. Kilmer would be considered more of a mechanic and not a technician. I have never seen a vid of his that showed any ability beyond the advanced DIYer. It makes sense though as his shop is no more than a home garage, even the new one in Tenn. He does have a following though, so he does have that. A snake-oil salesmen also has a following too and I would not buy oil from them either.

Scotty is no spring chicken. He's been around. I've driven Saabs. I like Saabs. I don't want a Saab. Scotty is absolutely correct.

Scotty is a foolish mechanic because he brags about him that he worked on cars for 51 years but he is 63 51-63=14 if he was 14 didn't he worry about homework and school and if somebody has 51 years of experience that doesn't mean he has done everything perfectly.

    • @edgewood99
      @edgewood99 5 років тому

ROFL. How does one do homework when it comes to working on cars? His GRANDFATHER owned a shop. His FATHER inherited the SHOP. His grandfather only retired from working on cars because his father wanted to retire. Working on cars at 14 in not that big a deal and would hardly interfere with schooling. Change a tire, do an oil change...everything a kid can easily do.
Nobody, especially him, is saying he does things perfectly. And STOP thinking SCHOOL is the end all and be all of existence. People learn things 50 different ways...and UA-cam gurus are a GREAT PLACE.

My first car was a Saab 900. It saved my life. Great car, sturdy and safe. Reasonably reliable. Electronics were a bit doggy. I think I may try to get another one.

A low Mileage Saab 9-3/9-5 after 2003 would be a fantastic first car. Why? Safety. Also 2.0T, 2.3T engines are superb and reliable.

Saab aren't perfect we've had our 900 for almost 2 years my biggest issue with it right now is finding a replacement top because my convertible top is currently completely off the car bent in half Saab makes excellent winter cars reliable amazing to drive and cheap to fill up at the gas pump

In the 1980s, my uncle had a 50mph, head-on collision with a 7.5t (16,500lb) box truck, on a UK moorland, two-lane black-top (think... the beginning of American Werewolf in London!) The police were astounded he was pulled alive from the wreckage.
Yet, having experienced two weeks in a coma, plus a tonne of occupational therapy, as well as having to relearn jazz trombone back up to professional standard, he made a full recovery, pretty much. A bit older, wiser and stiffer, but largely back to his old self.
The police were convinced that had he been in any other consumer car, it would've sustained too much damage to save the life of its driver.
By the grace of God however, just a week prior to his wreck, my uncle had taken delivery of a brand-new and beautiful, silver Saab 900 Turbo.

I had a lot of issues, but mainly because most mechanics don’t have any knowledge about Saabs, especially with programming. So I had to do all the programming myself which can be painful when you don’t know what you are doing, but you learn, you buy the right equipment which is critical, because I had to buy two laptops and a tech tool. All I can say it was all worthy and I very satisfied, this is my third Saab, I stopped driving Saabs for about 7 years and I own several other vehicles such as BMW and Mercs, but for me Saab is very special, so special that I had the car in Mexicali and I would travel from San Diego every weekend to work on it until I got it running!! Scotty just like most mechanics think Saab is garbage only because of their ignorance, Saabs are different, but great cars and even greater value. I don’t think I would ever get rid of it.

    • @AutoAutopsy
