Ten Saabs in one video -- fantastic! Yesterday I picked up my '03 9-5 Aero in Palm Beach and drove back to St. Petersburg on some 2-lane state highways. Gotta love the turbo passing power from 50-80 mph. Nothing short of thrilling, even if it's an auto tranny. One nitpick for later model Saabs under GM: they killed off the hatchbacks, which weren't popular in the U.S. Thanks for your inspiration in keeping these magnificent machines alive and appreciated.

Also, the Somett II with the the 3 cyl 2-stroke sounds amazing, especially if you live up north and are familiar with snowmobiles. The 3cyl 2 strokes from Yamaha and ski-doo are to die for.

Nice video. I wish had seen your original request for favorite Saabs. My age will show, but my favorite Saabs are the GT 750 from the late 1950s, the GT 850 from the early 1960s, the 1965 Monte Carlo named in honor of Erik Carlsson's win in the 1963 Monte Carlo Rally, the 99 EMS which was the sportiest 99 prior to the Turbo, and any of the various versions of the Sonett. In my life, I have been lucky enough to own and drive most of these. I have to say that there is nothing that equals the sound of a rally prepared two stroke Saab echoing through the woods . Now that I found your UA-cam channel, I will be back. Keep up the good work. Dewey Foulk

The weight distribution at the 93/96 two-stroke is absolutely perfect (the V4 models suffered from slight oversteer). In my opinion, the Saab 96 (especially the post-1965 models) are actually the most beautiful Saabs ever made. And don't you agree that the two-stroke cars are the coolest Saabs ever?

Some figures = production run 20 yrs = multi Monte Carlo winners = multi rac winners = multi i don’t know how many other winners . Remember in those days the cars had a real DNA with the road car unlike today’s Transformers . So beating the likes of Porsche etc was ASTOUNDING ! I bought my 45 yr old 96 7 yrs ago useing it every day and I have in that time covered 64000mls = it does 40 mpg on a steady run. The metal is amazingly rust resistant ---And you can work on it yourself . So maybe just a tiny mention in future .

Thanks for making the 10 best Saabs video. I own 3 9-4xs, one 2011 9-3 and a 2011 9-5. If you are ever in the Los Angeles Area and want to review my 9-4xs, I would be honored. You featured two of them in your video. I have 132,000 on one of them and I have never had an issue. Only changed tires, brakes and two window regulators.

WHAT ?? Viggen means thunderbolt ?? what idiot told you that ?? :P
I am swedish and Viggen is the singular form of Vigg which is a bird: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tufted_duck
So basically Viggen just means "THE tufted duck"...
FYI thunderbolt in swedish is blixt.

+Rax0r_Gaming That's probably why they picked it though, I mean how many of us Swedes do you hear saying "aeroplan" (as in Svenska Aeroplan AktieBolag) instead of "flygplan"?
Also, if you look at them long enough, the Viggen emblem has some similarities with the warning sign for high voltage (black triangle on yellow with a zigzag lightning symbol). It's hardly a perfect match, but the more I look at them side by side the more I see how they could've used it as a starting point.

    • @SemtexWarrior
      @SemtexWarrior 6 років тому +1

The Saab cars "Viggen" almost certainly comes from the Saab AB fighter jet "37 Viggen". If you look at that planes silhouette from above i think you find a much more likely "parent" to the 9-3 Viggen's emblem.
Saab was trying to play the "jet fighter manufacturer card" to it's fullest and naming a special version of the 9-3 after a fighter jet produced since the 70's would be the logical choice.
As for the source of the name itself we will never know as long as we don't manage to find the guy who actually named the viggen fighter in the late 60's. Saab used the name "Griffin" that is the english version of "Gripen" so they have used the names of mythological creatures before. But when reading about "åskviggen" in swedish it seems to be about stones in norse mythology and i don't think they would name their planes after stones supposedly being hammered into the ground when lightning strikes....
They've had enough planes do that without naming them for it :P

Great Video, enjoyed it very much! I have a 1998 900SE Turbo Convertible which I bought used in 2005 and now have 179,000+ miles on it and still love driving it. It has the original Cosmic Blue Metallic exterior, the only one I've seen in that color and is a real eye catcher. It has a 5 speed manual and handles like a real sports car on the backroads here in SW CT. My other 2 cars are rare Jags but I enjoy driving my Saab the best. Paint job has held up unbelievably and when it gets polished, the car looks new.

It’s also before the GM era and has a chassi that’s also fitet in some cars from the Fiat concern. I owned 7 Saabs. a 1965 95 station wagon with the DKW 3 cylinder two stroke engine: a 1968 96 Deluxe sedan with the Ford Motor Company V4 engine: a 1973 Saab 99E with the 4 cylinder 1/2 of a Triumph Stag V8; a 1970 Saab 96 V4:: a 1977 Saab 99 E with the 4 cylinder 1/2 of a Triumph Stag V8; a 1986 Saab 900, a base model on which I replaced the steel wheels with Turbo alloy wheels; the stock shocks with Boges; the stock exhaust with a tuned exhaust and header; the stock clutch plate with a turbo clutch plate; the stock power steering rack with an aftermarket rack built by a group of former Delco engineers who copied the stock GM rack but with higher quality materials (the car tracked noticeably better with that rack;) the stock serpentine belt with one used in racing snowmobiles (the belt was quieter, and never squealed). The stock one squealed when tightened within specs; and I ran hard to find Michelin MXM tires made in Germany. All on the advice of my Saab Technician Tom Hayden Junior, the son of Tom Hayden, western Oregon's master Saab mechanic in the 1970's. At the time I owned my Saabs, from 1967 through 2011, those two guys knew more about Saabs than anyone else in Oregon.
The last Saab I owned was a 1997 well maintained Saab 9000 Aero that I bought in 2000 with only 21,000 miles, all records, and frequent oil changes by the previous owner. I had three favorites. The 1968 96 Deluxe V4 because there were so few on the road. And because it came with a tachometer, radial tires, full hubcaps and two strips of chrome along the side. Those were extras not on the 96 V4. The 1986 Saab 900 was another favorite because I had so much fun making it a much better car with all of the inconspicuous but significant modifications that I made to it, for the most part with stock parts. The Saab 9000 Aero was my other favorite Saab, for all the reasons in my response below to another commenter. And because it brought Saab into the modern world in ways that were very noticeable over the 900. And because it was so fast, quiet, and steered and handled so well. And swallowed most of the gear of a rock and roll band.

Sir you mentioned the 1999 to 2002 Saab Viggen in 2 door and 4 door. Very good but you left out the Saab Viggen 2 door convertible. This is worth mentioning because its not only a 2 door but a significant difference is the convertible top. Those are even more rare. I know this because I own a 2000 Saab Viggen Convertible and is/was a very limited production. For example mine is one of only 232 made in Silver. Even fewer were imported to the USA. So I am very proud and aware of this unique automobile. Still running strong, limiting my driving but it is run and driven at least once per week. Current mileage around 79,000 miles. Its very fast and surprises many sports cars that pull up next to you at a stop might for 2 reasons...1 most people think oh its just a Saab, and 2. They think oh its just a convertible.

Few things i would like to mention. The turbox has a stronger gearbox therefore the usual boost limiter in 1st and second gear is removed. The first pictures of saab 900 are not spg, the boxy bodykit was for carlsson models. And the facelifted 9-3 had aero models both with 2.0 and 2.8 engines once again. Also if i am not mistaken, besides visual appearance, saab actually did make 9-2x a better subaru than the original. Overall a good video, maybe you could make one about saabs accomplishments, they did do good in rally, there is some info on saab in le mans races, they made some safety features, one of the first turbocharged cars, etc...

I used to own a Saab Sonnet III. The three-on-the-tree took a little getting used to (after having two Hurst GTOs), but the thing flew. With that light body and front-wheel drive it handled very well. I currently own a 1997 900s which is a naturally aspirated, fuel-injected V6 with four overhead cams and 24 valves. Road and track said it will "Easily go 150 M.P.H.". While I haven't gone that fast I can attest that she is no slouch in the speed department. And she takes 87 octane gas. Although the 18.3 M.P.G. on the highway is nothing to brag about. Parts are ridiculously hard to get and outrageously expensive. For example, the last power steering hose set me back $372.50. My mechanic told me to get another Mercedes. "It would be cheaper". LOL

I owned a Saab 96 witth v4 engine and a 1970 Model 99 and 1972 Model 99 with 1.8L fuel injected motor. The '72 Model 99 was a great car that we drove for over 220,000 miles with almost no problems. The clutch was hydraulic actualed with master & slave cylinders for some reason the slave cylinder would start leaking and require rebuilding which I got very good at. I pulled the engine myself once because the harmonic balancer rubber bushing wore out and began to slip which caused the alternator and air conditioner to not rotate properly. I used the roof rafters of the garage and a fence come-along to pull the motor to get to the balancer since the 4 cyl engine was backwards to most engines with the clutch/flywheel up front next to the radiator. It was fairly easy, I had the engine pulled in a couple of hours, replaced the balancer pulley and dropped the motor back in the same afternoon. The engine/transaxle was all one unit and easy to remove. The hood came off with 2 bolts and the radiator/grille came out as one unit so it was the quickest engine transmission removal of any water cooled motor/transaxle that I ever worked on.
