    Totally agree. The gas savings vs parts wear is like risking dollars to save pennies. The feature is also SUPER ANNOYING; dangerous even, due to the delayed restart. I constantly worry about stepping on gas too quick during the restart. Luckily my current cars Acura MDX Advance & RSX Type S don’t have it and my next car won’t have it either.

      Stepping on the gas "faster" changes nothing. The failure rate on the parts involved in start/stop are very high. I don't see any reason to turn it off, 3% is huge over 6 years.

      They could get 2 or 3% by just making the vehicle lighter mate. One wonders how much efficiency is lost by hauling around the ever increasing number of complex gadgets? For example electrically heated seats can weigh upwards of 80KG for a driver/front passenger seat for what is an utterly pointless function as your arse will warm it up after a minute while the cabin heater kicks in. A lighter car means better road holding, lower fuel consumption and better performance. I own a 2004 lightweight French supermini hot hatch, curb weight of 1035KG and it does 0-62 in 6.7, 140MPH, and cruising at 75MPH (it's peak mpg point) gets 45MPG on a flat motorway with 35MPH on the urban cycle if you don't drive like a boy racer. I wonder what it would do if I lightened it and replaced the posh leather seats and climate control system? That'd knock around 10% of the weight off, and of course with no A/C belt holding the motor back it'd rev a little more freely.

      @@michealcthompsonjrYessir it does make a difference. If I forget and leave mine on and the engine shuts down at a light, then when I take off, if I forget and try to take off too fast, there’s a nasty jolt in the drive train as the engine tries to catch up with what’s going on, and I know it can’t be good for things. And that right there is why I try to always remember to keep mine turned off. Besides that it’s really annoying. The potential repair costs are not worth the potential savings.

    Had a 2017 Dodge Durango with this feature. Had to replace the starter which cost over $1k because the engine mount had to be removed to get the job done. The mechanic checked how many starts the old starter had on it. It had logged 36,000 starts! We were floored! Even if I had started my car 10 times a day for a year it would have only totaled 3650 starts in a single year, but because it stops the engine at every stoplight, stop sign, and even when you pull in to park, it had racked up that many starts at the 87K mile mark.

    Thank's Scotty.
    In addition to wearing the engine, battery, and starter out faster, the few times I tried that feature on my 2019 Highlander, I noticed a lag in acceleration.
    Maybe not noticeable for the average driver, but I've driven Emergency vehicles for over thirty years. If you need to accelerate from a stop to get out of a situation where you may be impacted in a collision, you don't want any hesitation.

    • @ward7576
      @ward7576 Рік тому +2

      Yes, hundred times yes - the lag in accel after a full stop is just terrible. I got Dacia Duster 2023 1.3l engine with start-stop and I just can't start driving after a full stop with proper acceleration - it feels like I never gave it any gas...2 seconds go by and I am getting fking yeeted forward with that delayed acceleration. I enjoy the part of using remote and starting the car with button, but other than that - it's terrible.

    • @TurtleSauceGaming
      @TurtleSauceGaming Рік тому +3

      @@ward7576I personally have made it a point to try to avoid those smaller engines. I had a 1.6L 2013 Ford Fusion, and don't get me wrong I did love that car. Cool looking, and a solid car all around. Except at 150k miles we were doing something and noticed that the serpentine belt we just replaced 6 months ago was now shredded. The headers were leaking. The turbochargers they put on these smaller engines are killing them. Maybe they can get away without a turbo on some, but most they put a turbo on, and I just don't know if I could trust one, even without a turbo. I hope you get a long life out of that car, but man if a vehicle is blowing oil like that under 200k miles, it's a failure in my opinion. Meanwhile my 5.6L v8 on my truck is going on 325k miles with no such oil leak. As far as I'm concerned, that's HALF the lifespan.

    •  Рік тому +3

      The lag in acceleration comes from torque converter no longer spinning since the engine shutdown.
      If quick acceleration after start in automatic car is what you want, a dual clutch transmission is what you want.

    Thank You!! You settled an argument I had with an acquaintance about this feature. I live in Phoenix and drive on the "surface streets" constantly. If someone were to commute from North Phoenix into downtown along, say, 7th Ave. to work during morning rush hour, one could expect to make at least 9 or 10 stops along the way. And in summer when you have your A/C going, daytime running lights on, other interior electronics running, your phone charging, every time you stop for a light, your main battery is draining itself running those systems because your engine has stopped. So, it stood to reason that your main battery will wear out A LOT faster than it would if your idling engine was powering those systems via your alternator while you idle. AND i just knew, without any written evidence, that if you restarted your engine about 10 times more often than normal, you'd burn through your starter MUCH sooner. Physics is truth.

The light would turn green and as soon as I took my foot off of the brake to step on the gas the engine would turn off and would have to restart the engine by the time I stepped on the gas. Here is when auto stop-start IS useful:
    - Stopping at railway crossings
    - Stopping at drawbridges
    - Long traffic lights (or long lines at traffic lights)
    - Basically any stop that will make you wait longer than 10 seconds (for example, waiting for passengers at kiss&ride)
    Here is when auto stop-start SHOULD BE TURNED OFF:
    - Stop-and-go highway traffic (instead, creep in 1st-2nd gear with enough distance, this prevents unnecesary wear on clutches and you keep moving at idle instead of constantly restarting the car, and others can still change lanes if need be)
    - Uphill starts (unsafe when stopping as the engine produces no thrust when shut off)
    - After a spirited drive if your car has a turbocharger (it needs oil circulating to cool and shutting down the engine stops oil circulation)
    - Cold weather until the engine has warmed up to operating temperature (car will typically automatically keep that system turned off until it's ready for use)
    It's not "planned obsolescence", it's "read the damn owner's manual", that button is easily reachable for a very good reason! It saves good fuel if you use it correctly and think ahead.
    Don't drive your cars mindlessly, it is a little spaceship, and you have to know how to manage it.

    Thank you so, so much for making this video!! I've been meaning to send you a question about whether I should trust the auto-off or keep disabling it every time I start my Civic 2023. I thought all the start/stopping/restarting might cause extra wear and also drain the battery, so I've been hitting the disable every time I start it up. I was worried there might be a downside to doing this. Guess not. Thanks so much!

    You ain't never lied! I drive my 2018 in L6. That start stop doesn't save gas. I was worried about my starter going out.
