Hope this video blows up. Just finished my first season and cant stress how important my locals discord has been for networking and filling my gaps in knowledge.
@@The_Pikaboi people really underestimate the power of a good discord. It's so helpful for VGC!
I went to my first regional earlier this year and a piece of advice I would give anyone is DO NOT EXPECT TO CUT OR EVEN DO WELL AT YOUR FIRST EVENT!! It might sound harsh but if you go 2-4 drop or 2-7 at your first event when you expect to do well you will feel extremely bad about yourself. Go have fun, enjoy the event and try to learn as much as you can from everyone there they are supper friendly and willing to help
This is great advice honestly. You have to understand that you're learning and doing well at your first tournament against seasoned players is very difficult. Even going 2-4 means you won 2 sets! At a regional! That's awesome!
This is a great video for beginner. I hope this video blows up.
@@SteamPunkVGC thank you so much. I hope so too. 🙏🏼 Haha
Thank you for posting something like this, I am really inspired to try and get back into it even though i am a much older player and female, the community is wonderful and helpful. I don't have much in the way of assistance in learning, I spent fair amount of summer in a bad place dealing with a lot of hurt, but now I will try to get back out there even if casual and locals only. Reg H is really nice to jump into, so much variety and fun.
@@GLady83 Never too old to join VGC and there are lots of great female players and creators in the community! I hope you enjoy playing and Reg H is super fun in my opinion!
My list for learning competitive:
-find premade teams that have a strategy you like
-use those teams as a way to practice basic battle mechanics like switch timing and in-battle decisions
-record matches so you can assess your gameplay and further recognize your own patterns
-tweak the premade teams based on your weakpoints (the last step is also the starting point for building your own teams; swapping a pokemon or even EV spreads won't matter if you have no knowledge of your habits or the meta.
@@Knightmare0259 this list is great! Recording your own matches would have been great to include in this video.
Thank you so much for doing this video. VGC has consumed me and I really wanted to get started but didn’t know how. Thank you for providing the resources!
@@Wendigeist that's what I'm here for! Setting people off on their VGC journey! 😁
Recommend 3 websites to be a VGC player. Serebii, Pokemon Showdown, Pikalytics.
-Serebii is an information website, go to battle mechanics, will teach you basically everything
-Showdown is a free version of pokemon you can practice and teambuild with. Lets you send information on your team to other people. Sometimes tournaments are on here
-pikalytics lets you calculate pokemon math
Though I don’t see myself participating in VGC in the near future, I’d like to compliment you on a great 1st video for your channel. This will be a great starting point for anyone wanting to get involved in local Pokemon events! Best of luck with growing your channel 🫡
@@ToxicPea Thank you so much! And if you ever do decide to join, I know a few people that can help you out! Haha
@@PrimordialEspyVGC I spent a good deal of time bringing Champion Geeta’s team up to Master ball tier in the Regulation A ladder some years ago. I think I’m good xD

@@shiny_lock Absolutely! VGC is for anyone and everyone and getting good just takes some effort!
With the first tip i think quite the opoosite could also work. Build a team with your faves and an strategy, practice with a friend, then see and ask what your team is lacking and use resources like Pikalytics and your friend to get some help. Like building a Deck in a card game! You start with the starter deck or a base version of it and then you upgrade it with new stuff. It may be impossible to recognize at the end, but that way you'll know your strategy perfectly
So build a team with your faves outside the meta if you want and practice with your buddies, then look which of your Pokémon can't keep up and change it with another one that's better!

@@THATSAplusONE absolutely man! You deserve to be in it honestly. You are important to the community!
I feel like there are several barriers to playing vgc that just aren’t present in 6v6 singles.
Say what you will about Smogon’s tiering system, it’s hugely helpful that most Pokemon have detailed information on their strengths, limitations, most common sets, most common partners, and most common threats. You can’t build an entire team this way, but you can get to 4/6 fairly easily.
Such a system doesn’t exist for vgc as far as I know. Watching a youtube video is nice, but plenty of teams use only Annihilape or Maushold, not both. Same with Dondozo-Tatsugiri. And I haven’t seen any videos directly comparing each tailwind setter. Usually the most they do is say “these exist, pick one. Unless you’re doing trick room. But maybe sometimes still pick one anyway”.
Using rental teams is good, I agree, but they often have little documentation on the ev decisions they made.
Using rental teams is good, I agree, but it’s hard to feel like you’re really learning anything when, after 30 games, you’re still not certain how to pick partner Pokemon for your main attacker, or how to build ev spreads.
Speaking of ev spreads, most teams lack documentation on their ev spreads, meaning it’s hard to fully understand how to make your own ev spreads in the future because you’re not as certain which threats are worth focusing on and which ones are not worth preparing for.
The two most helpful pieces of info I’ve seen I’ve seen are
1) A reg H speed tiers guide by TalonVGC. He explains max, mid, and minimum speed, and how trick room and tailwind interact with speed.
2) A video on why people often build teams wrong. It used Hoopa as an example but any Pokemon works. The video explains that many new players will take a Pokemon and focus mostly on finding mons that answer its threats, as opposed to complimenting its offenses. Of course having answers to your main threats is good, but Hoopa is somewhat limited in which mons it can hit super effectively, and finding mons to compliment its offenses is key to consistently making forward progress in a battle.
Idk if you’re interested in making a vgc channel, or if you’re just posting this one video to help other new players. If you’re actually starting a channel, please feel free to use the points in my comment as video ideas.
Best of luck!
@@UncalibratedAimbot thank you for the in depth comment! Definitely more videos to come on the subject of getting into VGC! TalonVGC is great and I highly recommend his stuff like the speed tier video. I'm hoping to make VGC more beginner friendly the best I can, but Smogon is absolutely unmatched.
Great video for s small UA-camr
