- Welcome to The Mash and Drum Non-Chill Filtered! Blanton's Straight from the barrel available in the US
this fall and will continue to be a one time annual
release! This is following the announcement back in
February that Blanton's Gold was also being made available on an annual basis as well...Previously both gold and straight from the barrel were only available in Non-US markets and I do applaud Buffalo Trace for making these available to US buyers annually on a limited basis...But...unfortunately the word available is a a bit misleading.
Hope you enjoy the review and thanks for watching the Mash and Drum whiskey review channel!

Blanton's. We keep coming out with different whiskeys that you can't get.
"I'll pause for your laughter."
My exact sentiment regarding BT...anything.
If paying 100€ hurts, 400 is a joke
Angry Jason is the Best Jason. Love these videos that keep it real.
Rolex, Bugatti, Weller, Blantons....stuff I just read about. Thanks for being on our side and providing options from our universe.
You are sooooo spot on! At some point we the consumer, are going to reject the allocation model from Buffalo Trace. Until then, they will continue to tease and abuse their fan base. I for one have moved on to the other bourbons that you have suggested. Great juice from other great distilleries that is available and priced correctly. Cheers!
Cheers Gorgeous!!
Amen Tim!
Agree 100% At some point, the allocation and difficulty to find will become off putting to bourbon enthusiasts, and will turn to other distilleries to enjoy. There are some serious contenders in the game, and I’ve already been migrating away to more obtainable bourbons that are just as enjoyable. When the hype train gets too crowded, get off at the next stop.
My sentiments exactly, I'd rather be drinkin than chasin. Too many "bourbon enthusiasts " ruining the market by flipping an allocated 50$ bourbon or just to brag to their buddies "look what I got"
Im done chasing also
I was at the Buffalo Trace distillery Monday morning right when they opened. The only bourbon available at the gift shop was regular BT so I guess even the gift shop has a hard time getting stuff.🤔 I asked if they had anything else ER, Colonel Taylor, Blanton"s and was told " It didn't come in today". 🤬 For those of you that haven't been there in a while the Blantons bottling house is right next door to the gift shop. I saw them moving pallets of that stuff.Walked out with nothing and I am tapping out trying to find it. I live an hour away and its still damn near impossible to find anything, but regular BT from them anywhere at msrp. I like to have it for when people come in to visit but it's not worth it anymore. Great Breakdown M&D
Live 20 minutes from buffalo trace and cant find anything but regular buffalo trace.
@@cooper57m I recommend touring Buffalo trace for sure, its beautiful there. But when u walk through the blantons part and see just how much they have and how little you can find on the shelves is a little disappointing. Overall its a great place to visit and I recommend woodford reserve as well.
@@cooper57m I agree 100% with J.Summers Woodford Reserve is great drive and they will also engrave bottles on site. If memory serves me correct it only cost like an extra $7 to do makes a great gift. Buffalo Trace is definitely beautiful and also the best value free tours and a free tasting. I would also recommend the tasting at Four Roses as well.
The Truth hurts. I really like your alternatives. My Dad always said if you have a problem you better have a solution. I like your solutions!
I love your no nonsense approach to reviewing bourbon. It's like you are reading my mind when you talk. I agree with everything you say.
Thanks man! Just calling it as I see it.
@@TheMashandDrum Keep it up! The bourbon world is crazy out there. But it's good for many to hear a realistic review.
Rare breed is so damn good. I also really love the Belle Meade Cask. Amazing!
Your honesty is what I appreciate the most!
Yet another bottle I may never be able to get 😕
I love your no bs approach and honest reviews! A real breath of fresh air.
Also, I have to say that, bc of your videos, I've made it a point to stick to a strict price ceiling for some of the harder finds. In ATL last weekend and one store had Stagg Jr. for 199.99!?? Next store i called had it for 79.99. Ridiculous
If I seen a bottle on a shelf at a reasonable price, I would probably buy it. I am not going out looking for it specifically., There are all those great whiskeys out there that you mentioned on the shelf.
Great video and great recommendations Jason!! You are absolutely a need in this bourbon community!! Thank u for you ur voice and love for bourbon!
Yay! This is so exciting. Its great finding out there are new bourbons available that I'll never see in real life.
Thanks for this review. I was lucky this summer to have purchased and add to my beginners collection, the Blantons Gold. Paid 299; however, because it was just released in the states this summer, I feel lucky to have. Again, I love watching your reviews.
I love how this rant goes to full on recommendations for other options. Outstanding. Thanks!
I have a little left of my Blantons. Keeping it while I try your suggestions and not falling for the hype. Great video. Thank you.
Another excellent video! Real, straight talk! Most of us will never see those new blanton's releases. Fortunately, I have every bottle that you suggested as good alternative. Cheers and happy drinking! Keep up the good work!
Petition for more rants. Keep up the great reviews!
When Jason is fired up you know the episode is gonna be good! Couldn't agree with you more...cheers!
Jason, as always, your right on with this review / news! I'll skip looking for these and go with my "go to" Old Forester 1920. I'm so glad I found your channel last year and hope you keep your sense of humor and witty remarks coming! I live for your HONESTY! Cheers!
Don’t get me wrong pls . I’m not a whiskey expert but have been drinking some good named bourbons for few years . I did a bind tasting of GTS2017 , ECBP C917 , blanton’s straight from barrel 63.8% and stagg jr batch13 64.2% . And comparing them side by side i found blanton’s straight from barrel the winner due to great in nose with nutty , complexity and fullness . It was complex and round with great mouth feeling on palate as well. I know SFTB is different as they have different proof from different barrel but its worth hunting . I say about $120- 150 $ not more than that. I know its younger than ecbp and gts but that does not mean all gts batches are great and ecbp has more of a grassy notes where as blanton’s has nuts and complex and sweet n butter notes which i think most will like. stagg jr is great as well but not has depth as gts or ecbp or blantons sftb . Positions 1st blantons SFTB 63.8% , 2nd ecbp batch C917 , 3rd Stagg jr batch 13 and last sadly GTS 2017 . Love or hate it , it was blind taste .
Man I’m so glad that I have bottles of all of your alternatives except for smoke wagon. I’m fortunate to have a local store that tries to get me anything I want and at MSRP (or slightly above). That being said, they hate Sazerac because of their marketing practice. You should have heard them rant about Early Times BIB after that acquisition earlier this year. I will continue to drink good whiskey and refuse to play the secondary games! Shoutout to Redbud Liquor in Calhoun GA!
But you left out one of the absolute best value barrel proofs anywhere that you briefly mentioned the other day-- the gold label barrel select barrel proof from Jack Daniels. I have a STORE PICK 132 proof / 66.05 ABV for $63. Off the charts and full of flavor
I'm glad I ransacked all Gold and SFTB if i see them when traveled to Taiwan back in 2018-2019 about $80/bottle...still have 5 each in stock.
Great video as always. I got a sample of that SFTB from you and loved it. I will hint it but won’t pay above retail.
As you talked abot the pricing of the Straight from the barrel, I couldn't resist to look up in my receipts what I paid for the one bottle I bought so far. It is longer ago than I thought, it was on July 20 2014, and I paid 47,46 Euro (google says thats 56,14 US-Dollar) alongside a Elijah Craig 12 for 26,45 and a Four Roses Single Barrel for 28,56 Euro, cause I always hated to pay for shipping. I have not opened the bottle for years and finally until today, because I did't think I would or could replace it. From todays perspective, I was a fool not to buy a case, but those days were apprenticeship years with meagre financial resources. I think I will open it on special occasion or whenever I get a new bottle for a two digit price tag. Cheers
Another awesome video of TRUTH! Would love to try the barrel strength Blanton’s, but not willing to continue to ridiculous Buffalo Trace chase. I loved your alternative recommendations. I recently discovered the Smoke Wagon uncut unfiltered, and that is some DELICIOUS juice. I’d HIGHLY recommend that one, hands down.
Thanks again for the great video! Cheers 🥃
Great advice as usual Jason. Thanks!
Non Chill Filtered is my favorite whiskey series. Keep up the great work man.
I giggle every time I hear a bleep cause that's exactly how I feel chasing anything BT. All of the alternatives mentioned are top notch!
Thank you for the alternatives!!!
Agreed and I like the alternatives segments. Keep them coming
Your attainable alternatives are right on. I'd add that there are some craft whiskies that blow Blanton's away consistently. Buffalo Trace is loving the problem they created.
Thanks for speaking the truth once again. So many good options on the shelf these days, explore & share!
Cheers 🥃
I just cracked open a bottle of George Remus single barrel cask strength that is fantastic. I can buy 5 of these for the cost of the SFTB secondary. Great review. I too appreciate your honest opinion. Cheers
I love G Remus. Delicious.
I ordered a bottle of SFTB from a place overseas. They sent me 3 bottles of the 70cl regular Blanton's. I emailed them about it and they told me to keep the 3 bottles and they'd send me the SFTB at no cost. Paid $200 for all 4 haha! The SFTB is really good stuff but definitely a one timer for me.
I’ve had Blanton’s, yes it was nice...it’s a shame it’s so hard find. More great information for my fresh bourbon knowledge..thank you Jason!
Great video Jason!! I like and agree with all of your alternate picks as being better than Gold. SFTB is incredible though. I didn't like Gold 10% more than the regular Blanton's, let alone spend 100% more (when I had the opportunity).
I’ll say it again this why I subscribed to your chnl “Truth” your not ball washing like a lot of the other channels out there. Btw. That Rare Breed is my new go to good AF 😃👍🏼🥃🇺🇸
Jason another great video and telling it like it is. It’s great that we can hear someone calling the gouging to the carpet and maybe soon folks will wise up and stop paying some of these ridiculous prices. Ya gotta love the newer scam that for some odd reason that I’m seeing around here more as well with shop owners telling you they’ll give you a break in the price as long as you buy 2 other bottles. 😳😡
Russell's Reserve store picks for the win!
So real. Blanton’s is a sentimental favorite for me, but appreciate the alternatives.
Probably the best review....brutal honesty. ..awesome.
i bought 2 Blantons gold here in Alberta..100.25 Canadian a piece..ones gone..the other is on the shelf..waiting for my dad to visit to share with. Cheers buddy !
I will not have any Buffalo Trace products on my shelf. I also don't need any little horseys. Thanks for your unfiltered commentary.
Both are sometimes available in Germany and France at about 90 Euros and 120 Euros in 700 ml bottles.
Excellent review Jason. If I happen to see a SFTB on the shelf I would probably pick it up, but I will not pay secondary. I did recently try one of your suggested picks, Bullet Bourbon barrel strength. I was pleasantly surprised, it was delicious and a equally delicious price 38 bucks.
Keep up the Non Chill videos coming
🥃 Cheers!! 👍🏽
Thanks Joe!
Thank you for the video. Please keep doing what you’re doing. Especially recommending alternatives to unicorns.
Got to agree between availability and price gouging with owners I’m over it unless it’s at msrp
As long as people are willing to pay secondary prices, this madness will never end. Why would you expect regular Blanton's to sit on the shelf in Ohio at $55 when everyone knows they can resell it easily for $100? I'm not sure BT/Sazerac is really to blame here. And now that we've shown we'll pay exorbitant prices for bourbon, why wouldn't they ask high prices for these "special releases"? We've done it to ourselves.
It's the ridiculous 3 tiered system we have combined with BT decision to limit their products. You can't tell me they don't have the capacity or ability to expand to meet demand. They just don't want to so they can keep status and prices high
@@brianboyett6250 Isn't warehouse H the same size today as it was 20 years ago? 50,000 barrels for a 6 year old product means only about 8,000 barrels per year, or 2,000,000 bottles per year. That's about 40,000 bottles max per week for the whole world. Until BT starts aging Blanton's in additional warehouses, I'm not sure how they increase production unless they reduce the aging time or lower the proof.
@@cooper57m I agree it’s not worth chasing. But when someone around here sees a bottle at $55, they buy it. Not because it’s great bourbon or they plan on drinking it, but because they know that can pocket $40 by flipping it. Or they use it as trade bait for something better. So the people that want to try it can’t find it without buying it on secondary.
I like how you keep it real
Here in NZ you can buy standard Blantons for $85NZ-$60 US. Very nice bourbon but i wouldn't go mental over it and you guys have so many other great options so don't buy into the hype. Good on ya M&D for calling BS.
I can get ECBP A120 pretty easily at the moment. I’m sipping it now! I hope to find B520 one day!
i recently acquired a bottle of each: paid secondary for sftb and traded for gold. crazy how sftb is so easy to drink. haven't uncorked my gold bottle.
Great review!
Awesome Jason! Luckily I have most of those alternatives except, of courseStagg Jr. I love it when you rant. 😂. Cheers!🤙
thanks Javi!
We get Blanton's Gold here in Ontario once a year. It used to hit the shelves, but now is lottery allocated. $100 cad ($76usd). I got a SFTB from Spain for 75euro ($89usd). Amazing how they jacked the price so much for the US market, lol.
Over the last ten years, I have sourced bottles of Gold and SFTB from London, Amsterdam, France and Japan and never paid more than $125/bottle including all shipping/handling/tax. Luckily, I still have a few unopened bottles. As much as I enjoy Blanton's, I intend to nurse my current stash and probably won't be buying any more.
Bringing these products back to the US market then overcharging for them is an egregious miscarriage of justice. I always felt like only offering those expressions overseas was unfortunate for the US market but I was never an advocate for direct US distribution knowing that most American retailers would bump up the price or only offer these bottles in lotteries.
Blanton's Gold and SFTB have always been available in the US, if you were willing to pay $300-400/bottle because retailers had to buy them back from overseas... that fact that the MSRP will increase and the secondary price will likely remain the same is unfortunate. I also assume Buffalo Trace isn't magically producing more barrels in warehouse H so they must be dipping into the overseas allocation to facilitate direct Us distribution which will likely drive up pricing globally.
Question: Does any place still sell Appleton Master Blenders Legacy up in Canada?
Pick up a bottle of Blontons Gold today I did a pre order on line 2 weeks ago $139.00 am over in Canada 🇨🇦 West Coast in British Columbia
Totally agree with you on Blanton's, Jason. Nice $60 whisky. I routinely bought it for $45 twenty years ago and drank it every weekend. Now I can't find it, and I wouldn't buy it if I did, because the prices are RIDICULOUS.
I must come back to this comment and confess, I did buy three bottles at MSRP in October. $65 is fine, but I saw some for $80+ and passed.
I stopped doing these exclusive release hunts 2 years ago. Found alternatives that taste just as great and cost 1/3 the price in most cases. The monopoly that goes on with Bourbon is outrageous.
Spot on. It makes my head explode that they pretend to be doing Americans a favor by charging them considerably more for a product that is MADE HERE.
You tell them Jason!! Love this! If they care about us then they would get it out to the consumers here who want it. To all of us!!! But do they? Solid alternatives to choose from. So much to buy, so much to try, and chase that bourbon!!!
Agree completely on all the alternatives. The b520 is absurdly good. I love blantons and was below the streets of Sydney in December pounding away at that delicious gold. Good but not worth any mark ups.
$400 for a bottle of Blantons, they must be craza! I have a thrid bottle of Blantons left and to me its just o.k. I strongly prefer ECBP, OF 1920 and KC sbr 9yr. All high proof bourbons with great taste that are affordable.
Nailed it Guy!
Hey Jason, great alternatives list. One point, Belle Meade is discontinuing their cask strength! It is being rebranded as a fixed 108.3 proof "reserve".
Oh snap! Did not know that. Still will be delicious though.
The Gold definitely drinks much hotter and harsher than the regular Blantons. I was able to get one just last week for $100.00.
Looking for the Straight From The Barrel.
I'd pick up Smoke Wagon Uncut Unfiltered or Wild Turkey Rare Breed as alternatives to most any BT except Stagg Jr., which is the best BT product for the money imo.
Agreed. Had to pick up my only stagg jr, gold, and sftb whilst vacationing in Japan in February. It's frustrating bc batch 12 is the best thing I've ever had.
@@theycallmebeard9638 Agreed about 12. It was the first Stagg Jr. I tried and still my favorite.
I got two Blanton's could of had four but have yet to find Stagg jr or smoke wagon. Location, location, location
I am surprised there was no mention of bottle size. Many of the over seas bottles are 700ml. The US versions are 750ml. Not sure that covers all of that markup but it is worth mentioning.
Preach on!
I have seen Blanton's Gold. I work for a retailer and we received 3 bottles with our Winter BTAC. We did put it in our lottery and sold them for retail price.
I would REALLY love the chance to try Blanton's Straight from the Barrel, but refuse to play the uber inflated secondary prices!
Nope, not going to hold my breath! Just about everything from them is NOT available, lol Love both the Gold and especially the SFTB. You missed on the % you meant to say 99.9% lol. Great video and loving the idea of these! Cheers buddy
Thanks man!
I'm happy to see you show case my favorite, ECBP ... but I'm also worried it will follow the Buffalo Trace route at this rate with this much lime light lol
Theres fear of that with most bourbons but it seems that no matter what, the Blantons chasers are continuing to chase Blantons so hopefully ECBP and the others I mentioned will stick around.
Blanton's Straight from the Barrel is now NEVER really available in the US. REALLY appreciate how you called bullshit on these stupid practices from distillers like Buffalo Trace. Also appreciate you suggesting alternatives and agree that ECBP is the ultimate value in bourbon. If you can't find ECBP on your local shelf for $65, it can almost always be had online for $85 total shipped to your door.
Keep up the great, honest work! Keep pressure on this crazy price b.s. through educating and reassuring the consumer. I cornered a BT rep the other day in a liquor store and had a polite but brutally honest convo... Warehouse H is 'special' but so are the idiots who support the bloated prices of what comes out of it
Well done, I will not be looking for either. Sticking to the stagg jr.
this is the video i just would like to ask for, great jason
Elijah Craig Barrel proof is over $300 here in Australia....
Just got a SFTB today!!!!😁😁😁
A good friend was lucky enough to get two Gold at retail, one on the shelf and another from a store he has a good relationship with. He offered me one and I passed. This is great bourbon but it’s not even worth the $150. I’ll take 3 Rare Breed or Russell’s Reserve instead and smile while I drink it. Cheers!
Blantons for the win! The market and masses have decided.
Preach Jason
I'll take the Jack Single barrel barrel proof any day of the week!
"Available" (rolls eyes)
I always enjoy angry jason! 1000% agree and I hate every attempt Buffalo Trace's marketing team tries to do in order to make consumers seem as if they care. And also, they DO NOT have any issues with availability! The entire distillery is a joke and if they honestly feel their supply doesn't match the demand, for real, hold off on these stupid releases for the next 10 years! People who don't even drink participate in these dumb bourbon hunts only to keep the secondary market alive! $400 on secondary for a 6 year bourbon? Nope! I'd rather spend that amount on a 25 year scotch that has a REAL limited bottling, like Glendronach 25 with a maximum bottling of roughly 300. Now that's limited avaliable and collectible worthy! Great job, Jason! Hopefully these dummies will listen to you!
The SFTB is amazing. The Gold is much better than the SB. I was able to score both for $100 ea. at a cruise port. St Kitts.
I gave up on Buffalo Trace products a couple of years ago. Very few stores in CT ever get any of the mash bill #2. If they do, I only know of one store that will sell it at MSRP. I will take Old Forester 1920 and Russell’s Reserve single barrel Any day over the BT products. They generally sell Under MSRP in my area and are always on the shelf.
Agree with all your words!
Walked into a store in Canada today and bought a gold. Had no idea it was rare lol
The belle Meade cask and Bulliet BS do not get enough love.. they are absolutely fantastic. #MyHorsey
Blanton’s & Rare Breed are the only affordable version we get her in Australia, Blanton’s should of left their SFTB for overseas markets, as it’ll be blown out of the water now price wise. To give you an idea of the ones you mentioned:
Elijah Craig is US$280 when you can find it In Australia
Blanton’s SFTB is still reasonable at US$120
Rare Breed: US$63
OF 1920 not available
KC 120 NAS: US$89
Bulliet BS not available
The US market with all it’s offerings could of left Blanton’s SFTB for the rest of the world, luckily I’m making a switch off Bourbon to Irish & Scottish offerings, much more widely available & actually better priced in the international market
I’ve had Elija Craig bp, Rare Breed, Four Roses bp, Stagg jr, all delicious and would take over Blanton’s any day! Great video!!
I buy last week a bottle Blanton's Gold for 87 Euro in Germany, 102 Bucks.
Just saw Blanton's gold the other day in South Carolina...Florence South Carolina but these fools wanted $500 for it. I said to myself they crazy!🤣
I think COVID has restricted shipping because Blanton’s is being harder to find in Australia at the moment. Or maybe they are making it for the US releases.
Also our Blanton’s bottles are 700ml instead of 750ml
We don’t have it all good in Australia for Bourbon, out of your alternative cask strength Bourbons the only one we can find easily in Australia is Wild Turkey Rare Breed (which retails for around or a touch more than Blanton’s yellow label)
That Blantons Gold bottle is a thing of beauty though. Design team of Straight from the Barrel dropped the ball. Belle Mede cask strength is delicious!
As someone that lives in Australia and has access to Blanton’s Gold and Straight from the Barrel, in a blind tasting it is Gold that usually comes out on top.
Ive heard there are great Gold's out there.
The Mash and Drum it does vary. Some Gold bottles can be amazing.
Straight from the Barrel drinks very smooth for the proof. They again can be great, usually between 125-130 proof is the sweet spot as the over 130 proof can be hot
@@brendanwalkley5494 The SFTB drank smoother than the gold in this comparison. Really rich.
The Mash and Drum gold is currently at $128 Australian Dollars (around $95 USD) and Straight from the Barrel is $175 Australian dollars (around $129 USD) both bottles are 700ml.
Regular Blanton’s is $87 Australian Dollars around $64 USD
I walked into a out of the way store last week and asked the owner if he had any of the BT products and I named off 4 or 5. He initially said he didn't have any and after I named off a couple more he said that all those products come in pre-purchased based on a list he keeps of customers that want them so even the store owners are part of the problem.
That's wack
most store owners are the fullest of the taters. They're the ones on the front lines that stand to make the most profit so they take advantage of it.
@@splix85 If that is the case I would think they would raise the price and sell to whomever walks in the door?
@@CALTECH007 some places do, ie: Blanton's gold for $400 on the shelf. A lot of them sell on the secondary market. The guys that put up cases of Weller and such, those are store owners.
Jack Daniels Single Barrel Barrel Proof doesn't get enough respect in the whisky community. I love a lot of the things you mentioned, but a lot are still hard to find and yet you can almost always find that Jack for $55-65. Maybe I don't want people to know that though...
Agreed on the Blanton's front, I would love to find and buy both of these but not for the going rate.
Oh it's definitely on my list. That's going to be in another video I'm working on.
I paid 200$ for my gold! The store here in Cali only had one! I'm my city the whole city got 5 bottles
In Cali, If you are willing to drop 200+ on a bottle I'd be looking for Old Carter juice.
MGP juice that the Carters hand select and blend barrels... they also do single barrels and used to be the palates behind Kentucky Owl
This is why I've given up on buffalo Trace.
