  • I made this sign to go on a beach home in North Carolina using my CNC router and Oramask 813. The Oramask makes painting the letters a breeze.

    If that's going outside, I'll be interested how well that sealer coat of shellac holds up to the weather. Shellac usually isn't a fan of moisture.

    The sign turned out nice! Amazing what modern machinery can do in an hour that would take a Craftsman days or weeks. I finally got the nerve to 'adjust' my YTube screename and it is working out fine so far, thanks for the info a while back Fred. Hope your doing well, take care.

    Did you shellac the letters before painting to maker them smoother? I’ve been zeroing my vbit then moving it up manually a few thousands, zeroing there, them after the first cut setting the zero back and recutting. Greatly improves the cut quality and reduces sanding. I guess the shellac has the added benefit of sealing the partial end grain that’s been exposed too.
    I’ll gave to check out the film, I’ve been using the painters tape, it’s mostly successful but there’s always cleanup.

    • @GotItMade
      @GotItMade  4 роки тому

      Thanks for watching Andrew. The shellac seals the engraving and helps to prevent bleed in the grain. I've used painters tape. Was one of the pioneers of that technique I think. BUT, the Oramask is much much better. Give it a try!

      Thanks Nick. I used a compression bit. I thought the down cut portion of the cutter would shear the mask clean but it didn't work out that way. I had that cutter and a downcut laying side by side and I thought I would experiment. Now I know. :-)

    Hi. I live in Argentina and the other day i made a sign for my wife with the same technique using a cover material called here CONTACT (is used to cover books for the kids in the school) this material here is a lot cheaper than the oracal covers, 6 times lower than oracal, I use DOWN CUT bit to avoid that tears in the mask.

    • @GotItMade
      @GotItMade  4 роки тому

      Thanks for watching Arturo. I need to find the product you are talking about because the Oracle is a bit expensive. I used a compression bit thinking the down cut portion of the cutter would shear the mask before it could lift up. It didn't do so well that way but it was fairly easy to clean up. Stay healthy Arturo.

    These people must be new money.
    The sign is really cool, but if I had a million dollar beachfront property, I would be commissioning you (or whoever) to do a fine hand carved sign. I wouldn't even care if you used the router to do all the heavy lifting, as long as a craftsman came along with a gouge and other knives and/or chisels and put detail on every square inch of surface, _with_ a carved pelican! And made of stained purple heart wood, that paint looks more like camp tikihama than a million dollar beachfront (no offense to you, I know some customers have really weird taste).
    Cool video!

    • @GotItMade
      @GotItMade  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching Zero. I don't know much about the owners. I did this through their GC. I used the paint color code they requested. In my line of work I can't critique what the client wants. Just do it and get paid. :-)

    • @truckerenoch8824
      @truckerenoch8824 4 роки тому

      @@GotItMade Yeah, I know. It's not like some car painters who consider themselves "artists", so they'll refuse certain colors and color schemes, because they think it makes their shop look trashy and non-artistic. Who looks at a stack of money and says, "no, I care more about my reputation".😆
