In this video I make several walnut pen boxes for an upcoming craft show. I used my planer, table saw and mitre saw to break down the rough-cut lumber into usable wood. (i still don't have a jointer or a bandsaw.) from there, i could cut really thin pieces that i then glued back together in a bookmatched style. a bookmatch is where you slice down the center of a piece of wood and then open it like the pages of a book, revealing a mirror image on either side. after gluing up all the bookmatches, I cut the sides of the boxes out of more rough-cut walnut. i cut 45 degree angles on all the pieces and then cut some narrow groves down the sides in order to hold the top and bottom of the boxes in place. after that it was just a matter of assembling all the pieces. then i made smaller box frames to place inside of the larger one for a bit of a contrast and to hold to top in place. thanks for watching!

How long do you wait after milling before you move on to building? I ask because right before the crazy shots I noticed that the board had some really bad tension to it. The boxes look awesome btw!

I think it was about 10 months. I have a little room full of with dehumidifiers and whatnot as a makeshift kiln. it was dried down to 11%. The tension was probably because the log was a bit twisted and actually a big branch rather than the trunk. Thanks for watching as always!!

I'm a newbie to woodworking. Is there any way I can get dimensions? I'd hate to guess because I would waste a lot of wood trying to get them correctly proportioned.

Yeah! The boxes are 7 inches long, by 3 inches wide, by 2 inches tall. Thanks for watching!
