    Released in 1992, this 'November rain' music video reportedly cost 1.5 million $$$ (one of the most expensive videos ever made) and was based on a story by writer Del James (a friend of the band) about losing a love... There was rain at the November wedding, and a year later, there was rain again at the wife's funeral (Apparently, she took her own life...)
    The model in the music video was supermodel Stephanie Seymour, who was engaged to GNR singer W. Axl Rose at the time... She was also in the first part of the video trilogy ("Don't cry" by GNR) ... 'November rain' was part 2.
    Axl Rose was huge fan of Elton John and his romantic piano ballads, and 'November rain' was inspired by his music.
    By 1993, Axl Rose and Seymour had split up... she sued him in court for abuse and damages...
    So, part 3 was the GNR song 'Estranged' and Seymour was not in it... it depicted Axl's struggles after losing his love. The other members of GNR were not happy that million$ were being spent on lavish music videos, but there was nothing they could do to convince Axl Rose otherwise.
    Guns N' Roses were known for their brand of heavy rock music in 1987 w/ their debut album 'Appetite for destruction'... their 1988 EP 'GNR Lies' had acoustic songs showcasing the band's versatility.
    In 1991, the 2 albums 'Use your illusion' (Vol. I & II) were released, and they were vastly different from the first album... there were heavy rock songs, but there was so much diversity - epic ballads, country songs, boogie rock, punk rock, etc...
    U noticed the difference in the videos from 'Paradise city' in 1988, and 'November rain' that was shot in 1992... the band did not look the same at all ( 2 members had also left the original Guns N' Roses).

      The band didn’t like that they spent so much indeed however in hindsight they accomplished something spectacular music and video wise. I’m pretty sure the rest of the band nowadays can agree that it was worth it. They left behind a masterpiece music videos instead of something cheap. Axl is a true legend.

    At the beginning of the video, he's going to bed, taking some pills to help him sleep. Everything else in the video are memories that he's reliving in dreams, from them hanging out together (dating?), and then the wedding. Then he dreams about when she died and that terrible memory causes him to wake up in a cold sweat, reliving his loss and remembering that he's all alone. Beautiful, but ultimately sad video.

    • @keithdean9149
      @keithdean9149 Рік тому +8

      You'll notice a lot of foreshadowing throughout the video. At the beginning he's sleeping on one side of the bed, the other side was her side. At the reception, she's wearing black, the destruction of their wedding cake, and the spilled red wine, all signal something tragic is coming.

    I think the length of the video, the storytelling and cinematography really made it a standout at the time, it really was cinematic. Although "Thriller" by Michael Jackson was likely the beginning of epic, cinematic music videos. I remember my jaw dropped watching this one as a kid, it was so magnificent.

    Ax already started writing this song when he was still in school. It was a poem then. Many of his songs started this way. It will forever be my fave GnR song. I still remember the day the video was on for the first time. '92 was the best year. I met Axl back then and that June I was in the video Slash, Gilby and Teddy were making with MJ in Munich, Germany. Being on the road around newly free Europe and seeing all those great shows was magical. The atmosphere was one of a kind. November Rain will always be part of the soundtrack of the times and of my DNA ♥

      @@InnaSoloMusicYes. An early version of the song existed as early as 1982 when Axl was 17. He said that at some point he didn't know what to do with it.
      It evolved over time, didn't fit in Appetite for Destruction and was finally recorded in 1990/1991 as Axl ultimately "envisioned" it.
      Before UYI I & II came out in September 1991 they were already touring since the beginning of 1991 and playing the song live.
      Guns N' Roses very often played songs live before they were released on a record, they still do it, and that's something that almost no band did/does.

  • @bobbyanderson7133
    @bobbyanderson7133 Рік тому +24

    People who weren't alive then have no idea how big this band was. They were so big that they co headlined a tour with Metallica. Appetite For Destruction is on the best debut album of all time list...very high imo....then they put out Lies, which was all acoustic....I loved Patience....and everyone was super hyped to see what they would do next. This is their magnum opus.....Use Your Illusion 1 and 2 were released at the same time, and if a band has to end (I know they're touring), going out on top has the be the way to go and Use Your Illusion 1 and 2 put them about as on top as a band can get! Other than Metallica, no other band was as big as GNR during this time.
    If you like November Rain, check out Estranged, Don't Cry, Knocking On Heaven's Door, and Civil War, all from the Use Your Illusion albums.

    My favorite visuals in this video in no particular order:
    *During intro, the bass guitarist raises both arms right before the drums come in...just looks bad*ss
    *The bloody tear from Jesus just sets the tone for the whole thing
    *Slash standing out in front of the chapel, hair flying (which I learned the wind was from the helicopter flying overhead😂 videotaping it)
    *the little boy looking up at the sky before rain starts...shot that perfectly
    *Slash standing on the piano doing those 2 little shimmies right b4 launching into his epic solo
    *Axl running his hands across the keys of the piano
    *The bride throwing the white bouquet at the reception, and as it flies thru the air it turns red and lands on her casket...brilliant 👏

    Slash is not only a guitar legend but he’s the most chill person ever lol… axle rose was the guy with the vision for the band and although he was known to be possessive with the band he also composed most of the bands hits. He even manage to secure the band with private jets and bigger budgets for their shows even though they were still considered a freshly new band

    • @blahzay_
      @blahzay_ Рік тому +1

      Check your facts. The band would’ve been NOTHING without Slash and Izzy’s songwriting contributions….and Axl didn’t “secure” jack - they were one of the biggest bands in the world at the time so their label (Geffen) ensured that they were touring at the highest level. It was 100% a combination of all the members that made them so successful. Axl’s main “vision” for them at this time was adding a pointless 2nd keyboardist, backing singers and hosting super-expensive afterparties that drained most of their tour profits.

    • @javiercastrejon8102
      @javiercastrejon8102 Рік тому

      @@blahzay_ 1st of all you’re right about Izzy and slash’s contribution on the lyrics but you gotta learn to read, I said Axl composed most of their hits, I’m talking about the instrumentals. Even on slash autobiography he talks about how Axl was the 1st to be in the studio and the last one to leave. Other than Axl nobody else in the band cared about a bigger stage and budgets for their music videos, they also didn’t care for all the different instruments like the pianos, keyboards, back up singer that could play various instruments… that was all axl’s vision or at least most of it. Their record label spend so much money (more than they cared to) on the band only due to axls demands, this is also on slash autobiography btw. And as for the heavy partying budget, every single band member was on board with that not just axl… In fact, axl did partake in drug use but not as much nor as often as other members especially not after he flatlined from an overdose. I know a lot about this band buddy, go fact check someone else 😎

    Based on the story "Without you" By Del James. Here's a short recap of the story
    The famous short story on which the guys from Guns 'N Roses based the videos for the songs Don't Cry, November Rain and Estranged.
    Is it very similar to the story-line in the videos? Well, yeah but only in the broadest sense. The story revolves around 80's rock star guitar player Mayne Mann (yeah, I know, but that's how it was with those 80's glam rock types), who's been slowly self-destructing through drugs and alcohol after his band broke up. He shits money, so he can drink and drug himself to sleep every day, except he's not doing it because he's a depraved rock star. He's got emotions, see?
    Turns out his girlfriend caught him cheating on her after his band's last show and she sent him packing, and no matter hoelw much he tried to win her back, she just was having none of it. So he wrote her a song called "Without You" that became his biggest solo hit and he tried to win her back by offering her royalties from it when the song didn't work by itself.
    But no. She declined half of the royalties along with his overtures and, finally, after some time, he couldn't take it anymore and went to her place to try and talk to her but found her with the song playing on repeat and having shot herself in the head. So now he blames himself for cheating and for having his greatest hit be about this situation, and for her death, and for not being able to play anymore without thinking about his whole mess.
    So he drinks, does drugs, destroys his apartment, destroys his car, throw his money out of the balcony and into the street, destroys most of his guitar collection except his '57 Les Paul Sunburst, lights his place on fire, and finally dies in the resulting inferno while performing "Without You" for her one last time.
    Yeah, high literature this ain't.
    But it was entertaining enough, especially since I knew of its existence but I'd never read it. So how similar is it to the videos? Well, we have a melodramatic diva hair metal star, a model-looking girlfriend who's done wrong by him, her death, and her death as his man pain. So the main elements are there, it's just the details that are different, so I can see how Axl Rose might have identified with the main character and his trouble dealing with fame, substance abuse, the industry, and all that. The whole business with the dead girlfriend is sort of tangential.
    Also, Mayne Mann's band is called Suicide Shift. Yes, really.

    Video had killed the radio star about a decade prior to the release of this song, however, I think that was a perfect description of the impact this video had when it was released. It is iconic as far as videos go, as you can tell by the billions of views It has received. Also, the model is Stephanie Seymour, a real life 90s supermodel and real life girlfriend of Axl Rose at the time.

He also said he was scared to death doing the solo outside like that cause the helicopter getting the video was getting too close to him. Yes! This was from an era where MTV, and music videos were a big thing. The internet existed then, I think, but it was new, and the technology still wasn't anything like today yet, so there just wasn't as much access to information and media that's anything like today. You only had so many sources to be exposed to things you were interested in, if at all. So we watched this kind of stuff on TV, where it was the only place we could. At this time, lots of money was sometimes thrown at making music videos, and they did start to get more elaborate and were sometimes like movies. The whole music business in general was also much different then, before downloading and streaming music became a thing, and it was about getting people to buy actual albums. The record companies, and sometimes the artists, when they weren't cheated by the record companies, made obscene amounts of money then, so investing money in videos like this was worth the promotion and advertising to make more money selling the albums. Video definitely did take over that purpose which had previously been done by getting your music played on the radio.
    The actress that played his wife in the video was Stephanie Seymour. She was one of the top super models at that time. Her and Axel Rose did have a relationship in real life at that time, and I think it was rumored that they may have been engaged to be married at one point, but it didn't last, and they were never actually married, and she did not die tragically.

The story was a fictionalized account of a band that was on the rise of the biggest band in the world and the song that launched them on the ride. And how it destroyed the relationship of the girl it was written for/about. Basically Sweet Child and Erin Everly. The video was the 2nd in a trilogy. Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” was the first movie like music video I recall seeing in 1983/84… but there perhaps is older ones I can’t think of.

    The video meaning, you can't handle. It's about making it in the music business. If one understands the industry and accepts the truth, you'll get the video.

    If you notice the brides face in the video, you can tell she doesn't want to be there. She doesn't seem to really want the wedding. This is the meaning above all.

    November Rain is one of my favorites from Guns n' Roses and will always be a classic. It's just a shame Axl can't sing at all nowadays anymore 😅
    If you're looking for more GNR, my two favorite songs of them are 'Estranged' and 'Don't Cry'
    Estranged has Slash going all out with an awesome slow guitar intro. The guitar in that is the absolute highlight for me, I absolutely love it. (although I might be a bit biased, I also love Slash' solo work. Check out 'Anastasia' or 'No More Heroes' someday, I bet you love those 🙂)
    Don't Cry is a gorgeous ballad of which there are multiple versions lyrics-wise. Try to find the one from Use Your Illusion I. It starts with 'Talk to me softly'

    there are many theories about the "Illusion trilogy" that don´t cry, estranged and november rain have a kind of conecction, there´s not a clear conclusion about that but it´s help you to understand better the video

    The entire song started with him taking pills and yet not able to sleep, it kind of spoiled without spoiling because u easily forget about it when the music starts
    He sang "don't you need some time on your own?", life can change so very quickly, his wife died and sadly enough he got all the time in the world for himself

    The most expensive music video ever at the time of release. They built the church in the middle of a desert in New Mexico just for the film, and a second larger one for the interior shots. The helicopter shots were v difficult and needed loads of retakes as it threw up too much dust, blocking out the camera and making it difficult for Slash to play.

    “A legendary Dutch mythological figure, Vunter Slaush (better known as Slash) is a member of the mystical group Guns n' Roses who goes around playing music for children and adults alike... in reality, however, Slash is not believed to be real, but a fictional character portrayed by parents like Randy Marsh and Roger Donovan for their kids. Sometimes described as a 'feeling in your heart', there is a small group of kids, such as Eric Cartman, so loyal to the legend, they believe Slash may in fact, be real after all. It may or may not be worthy of note he was never seen in Imaginationland.”

    Rumor has it this is how people in California react every time a little bit of rain is falling. Screaming in horror, jumping over tables, trampling each other to death.
    Tragic.
