    I love how you have evolved from a typical beauty blogger who tries everything in the market and layers tons and tons of skincare products into a no-nonsense, straight-forward skincare realist who debunks skincare myths and hype and empowers your viewers with knowledge about not only ingredients but important things like respecting your skin's barrier function. I have learnt so much from you and I really cant wait for your products to come out. Hugs and kisses from Singapore. Xx

    I'm deeply ashamed the way I spoke and thought about silicones in the past. You could say I was deeply "green washed" by the green beauty community to think that silicones (together with many other ingredients) were pore clogging. I did break out from a couple of products that contained silicones, but now I know it must've been something else my skin reacted on. Now my skincare routine contained about 50-70% silicones in it and I never break out! Actually, I found out that products with silicones felt nicer and ligher on my skin than those without! So I've definitely converted back. :)

    • @LiahYoo

      +Frivolous Girl I think a lot of people go through the phases of filtering out ingredients for no solid reason which isn’t necessarily a bad thing too! I think it becomes a bit of problem where an entity is solely using this to take advantage of our wallets

    • @linhtrangngo6517

    The thing about silicones is though that they are bad for the environment (the non-water soluble ones) - that's one of the reasons they aren't seen positively. But I read somewhere that industries use like 90% of all silicones for manufacturing, so the tiny amount that gets in the waterways from cosmetics realistically won't make much of a difference. But just to stress that this isn't just about what is toxic to yourself, but also toxic to the planet! See also: micro-plastic!

    • @dyathinkhesaurus
      @dyathinkhesaurus 5 років тому +5

      germankiwigal I think the thing is the ones used in manufacturing don't end up in the waterways, but in landfills. The landfill ones won't directly kill or harm wildlife. But you make a good point overall!

    As much as I'd like to love products with silicone, my skin gets easily congested and breaks put like crazy whenever I use silicone based products from moisturizers, foundations, and even the HD powders. However, if the silicone is is very low in the list of ingredients my skin tolerates it as long as I don't use it daily. Same goes with mineral oil, squalane, beeswax, and shea butter... so I really get a hard time choosing products for my skin. Plus, chemical sunscreen irritates my skin too. My skin gets blotchy and feels raw whenever I use them.

      AM:
      Cleanser: I alternate between Innisfree Jeju Volcanic Pore Cleansing Foam and Sulwhasoo Gentle Cleansing Foam
      Active: Drunk Elephant C Firma Day Serum or Murad Active Radiance Serum (This contains silicones, but doesn't break me out because I use very little amount of this, and for as long as I don't keep it in my face for more than 10 hours and I double cleanse then I'm ok)
      Moisturizer: Primera Pure Hydrating Gel Cream
      Sunscreen: Clinique Mineral Sunscreen or Etude House Mild Airy Finish (Both contains silicones. I can't find a mineral only sunscreen that's silicone free, but these cause the least break out as long as I cleanse my face with cleansing oil at the end of the day and don't wear it more than 10 hours.)
      PM:
      Oil Cleanser: DHC Deep Cleansing Oil
      Cleanser: Innisfree Jeju Volcanic Pore Cleansing Foam
      Toner: Pixi Glow Tonic
      Essence: Missha First Treatment Essence Intensive Moist (This contains dimethicone, but far down the ingredients list. I have finished 3 bottles and had no problem with this) or Primera Miracle Seed Essence (This one doesn't have dimethicone) I switch between the two every few months.
      Moisturizer: Primera Pure Hydrating Gel Cream most nights, but if I need something with a more occlusive function then I use Sulwhasoo Essential Emulsion. However, I can't use the Sulwhasoo one for more than 3 consecutive days or my pores will get congested. Luckily, it is really good in giving extra moisturization that I only need to use it at most twice a week, since it's moisturizing effect last for a few days for me.
      Mask: Tosowoong Deep Sea or Propolis Mask or CNP Propolis mask. I use them only if my skin is looking a bit dull, and i want something to perk up my skin. I only keep the mask for 20 minutes and I usually wipe off the excess essence. I don't use my moisturizer if I use a mask, since it would be too much moisture for my skin, and my pores are going to be congested.
      I also use L'oreal Purifying Mud Mask once a week. It's been really effective in keeping my pores looking clean and keeping out blackheads. I feel it's one of the more effective mud mask that is quite affordable. I've also stopped using my Clarisonic when I started using this, because I feel like my pores looks as clean, but i don't risk overexfoliating.

    Ok so basically we shouldn't worry too much. Products that dangerously harm you aren't available in normal stores. If you get a breakout, that's not too bad because your body noticed an ingredient isn't good *for you*. (That's definitely better than something harming you and you don't notice.) You might just have an allergy against something or it doesn't suit you skin type OR your body is just unsure.
    As for me, I'm pretty sure that you shouldn't do like too much skin care, because your body usually knows what to do.
    If you're not sure how to start up a skin care routine though, don't hesitate to try yourself out. Maybe borrow something from your friends or relatives, so you dont have to buy something that might not even work, right? 😊

    성분이 중요는 하지만 성분이 다가 아니란걸 저도 점차 느껴가고 있어요
    저는 천연성분에 집착?하기 보다는 오히려 저에게 안맞거나 알레르기 반응이 있는 성분을 배제해나가면서 피부 유수분 밸런스를 맞춰주니깐 피부가 더 좋아졌어요
    그래서 요즘은 안맞는 성분들을 목록으로 만들면서 스킨케어 고를때 그 성분만 배제하는 방법을 사용하고 있어요

      I did read that it technically isn't necessary, but if your budget allows, there is no harm. People would say because the skin around your eyes are thinner and that eye creams are formulated with finer molecules and are less irritating but when you check the ingredients of eye creams and most moisturizers, there really isn't much difference. I use the same moisturizer (COSRX oil free lotion) by dabbing a small amount around my eye area without any issue.
      The ONLY issue that I can think of when using the same moisturizer for the eye area is if your moisturizer is very occlusive, thick and greasy which can make it difficult for the eye area to absorb the formulation.

I believe that it’s all about how your skin takes to the chemicals. I been watching ur videos a lot these days and you give good explanations and information. I have a question.... I want to add some of cosrx products into my routine. I saw u posted a video about cosrx products before which made me to add it into my routines. My skin is oily around my T-zone, I have very sensitive skin, and I have a lot of reddish pimple scars around my cheeks, blemishes I had them for almost a year now. I stopped taking Accutane about four- five months ago. I still Break out but not bad as I used to, like three four pimples each week but it gets very red sometimes.
    So the product I wanted to add are :
    One step pimple clear pad after cleansing. For cleansing I use Clinique powder pressed that has %10 pure vitamins C to wash my face. so after the clear pad I will use AHA, BHA TONER, then cosrx snail essence, and then i use Clinique moisture surge extended thirst relief. Do you think if I use one step pimple and AHA,BHA at the same time is it too much?? exfoliating ? Will it break me out a lot is it good routine? I hope you can help and thank you

    The thing that worries me the most is not the safety of the product when it applies to the skin, but the safety of loved ones when they kiss my cheeks and so on. Thats why i am very concerned about the safety of products and tend to go with the all natural ingredients 😉

    I always try to avoid certain ingredients in my skincare routine, including fragrance, mineral oil and alcohol but I'm not sure if all alcohol ingredients are bad. I've come across ingredients saying: cetyl alcohol (plant based), does that mean it's safe to use on my skin? Are some alcohols good and some alcohols bad? Or are they all bad? Can you do a more in depth video on different types of alcohols in skincare products coz it's so hard to avoid them at all cost but I'm afraid to chance it and aggravate my extremely sensitive skin!

    • @emilyo.3431
      @emilyo.3431 6 років тому +7

      Usually any ingredient that ends in -ol is alcohol based, but they're not all bad! Cetyl alcohol, as far as I'm aware and could be wrong, is okay, as well as butylene glycol, which is used in a lot of Korean skincare products and isn't harmful! It's a humectant that attracts moisture to the skin and breaks down into gamma-hydroxybutryic acid, which is naturally found in our bodies.

    I love your channel, however, ones I heard: "If you can´t eat these ingredients then you can´t apply them into your skin neither." And is mainly because everything we apply topically is absorbed by the human body and is accumulating over time. So even if those chemicals are very little, imagine use tons of products for more than 20 years! Personally, I love beauty products so, currently I am trying to balance between organic and non-organic beauty products and I have noticed a huge improvement in my skin :)

    • @LiahYoo
      @LiahYoo  6 років тому +4

      Topical absorption is in fact very limited. That’s why anti-aging products struggle to work because it’s hard to penetrate into the dermis layer which they should reach to promote collagen production. And even if a small amount goes into the body, our system is smart to let them out so it doesn’t accumulate inside our body!

    Liah, I am so happy you did this video! I thoroughly enjoy Lab Muffin Beauty Science and her videos as well! You both are bringing some levelheaded truth to consumers that is so refreshing in yet another area of life so many divisions are happening. I used to be what I guess people call a green beauty purist. I never gave much merit to the EWG though, And always relied on more solid research To gain conclusions about ingredients. Honestly, what I see at the heart of the matter is an issue of control, which is at the heart of human nature. We can greatly control the products and ingredients that we put onto our skin while we can’t have much control over the chemicals in our food and environment. My greatest issue with this philosophy about chemicals and personal care products is with that of every ingredient applied topically entering our bloodstreams. First of all, this statement is so biologically arrogant it’s just disturbing and makes me question the integrity of our education! Secondly. If every ingredient was able to penetrate the skin and reach the bloodstream, even at 60% absorption, we have a much greater problems than the products were applying to our skin! Wouldn’t we all be some very sick individuals? Like much more so than we already are in western America. But everyone everywhere would have worries because of the substances in our environment secondly. If every ingredient was able to penetrate the skin and reach the bloodstream, even at 60% absorption, we have a much greater problems than the products were applying to our skin! Wouldn’t we all be some very sick individuals? Like much more so than we already are and western America. But everyone everywhere would have worries because of the substances in our environment both organic and inorganic, man-made and nature made, Seeping into our bodies. The skin was designed to protect our bodies from the outside world and it is not like the rest of our organs. It has an entirely different function and that is to protect and cover what is on the inside. Thank you so much for making this video, again, and I sure do hope that many people can see this and consider the facts and derive their own personal conclusion based in good and valid information!
