I'm deeply ashamed the way I spoke and thought about silicones in the past. You could say I was deeply "green washed" by the green beauty community to think that silicones (together with many other ingredients) were pore clogging. I did break out from a couple of products that contained silicones, but now I know it must've been something else my skin reacted on. The reason why the Green beauty community doesn't like silicones is that it's not safe for the environment. No one can say you are "green washed" because silicones clog pores :/

Skin care is really a very personal journey. Sometimes we discover ingredients that irritate us, sometimes we have products that work phenomenally. It's different for everyone. It's all an experiment to see what works for us. That's what UA-cam is about, sharing our results. People need to calm down 😃
The thing about silicones is though that they are bad for the environment (the non-water soluble ones) - that's one of the reasons they aren't seen positively. But I read somewhere that industries use like 90% of all silicones for manufacturing, so the tiny amount that gets in the waterways from cosmetics realistically won't make much of a difference. But just to stress that this isn't just about what is toxic to yourself, but also toxic to the planet! See also: micro-plastic!
germankiwigal I think the thing is the ones used in manufacturing don't end up in the waterways, but in landfills. The landfill ones won't directly kill or harm wildlife. But you make a good point overall!
As much as I'd like to love products with silicone, my skin gets easily congested and breaks put like crazy whenever I use silicone based products from moisturizers, foundations, and even the HD powders. However, if the silicone is is very low in the list of ingredients my skin tolerates it as long as I don't use it daily. Same goes with mineral oil, squalane, beeswax, and shea butter... so I really get a hard time choosing products for my skin. Plus, chemical sunscreen irritates my skin too. My skin gets blotchy and feels raw whenever I use them.
AM: Cleanser: I alternate between Innisfree Jeju Volcanic Pore Cleansing Foam and Sulwhasoo Gentle Cleansing Foam Active: Drunk Elephant C Firma Day Serum or Murad Active Radiance Serum (This contains silicones, but doesn't break me out because I use very little amount of this, and for as long as I don't keep it in my face for more than 10 hours and I double cleanse then I'm ok) Moisturizer: Primera Pure Hydrating Gel Cream Sunscreen: Clinique Mineral Sunscreen or Etude House Mild Airy Finish (Both contains silicones. I can't find a mineral only sunscreen that's silicone free, but these cause the least break out as long as I cleanse my face with cleansing oil at the end of the day and don't wear it more than 10 hours.) PM: Oil Cleanser: DHC Deep Cleansing Oil Cleanser: Innisfree Jeju Volcanic Pore Cleansing Foam Toner: Pixi Glow Tonic Essence: Missha First Treatment Essence Intensive Moist (This contains dimethicone, but far down the ingredients list. I have finished 3 bottles and had no problem with this) or Primera Miracle Seed Essence (This one doesn't have dimethicone) I switch between the two every few months. Moisturizer: Primera Pure Hydrating Gel Cream most nights, but if I need something with a more occlusive function then I use Sulwhasoo Essential Emulsion. However, I can't use the Sulwhasoo one for more than 3 consecutive days or my pores will get congested. Luckily, it is really good in giving extra moisturization that I only need to use it at most twice a week, since it's moisturizing effect last for a few days for me. Mask: Tosowoong Deep Sea or Propolis Mask or CNP Propolis mask. I use them only if my skin is looking a bit dull, and i want something to perk up my skin. I only keep the mask for 20 minutes and I usually wipe off the excess essence. I don't use my moisturizer if I use a mask, since it would be too much moisture for my skin, and my pores are going to be congested. I also use L'oreal Purifying Mud Mask once a week. It's been really effective in keeping my pores looking clean and keeping out blackheads. I feel it's one of the more effective mud mask that is quite affordable. I've also stopped using my Clarisonic when I started using this, because I feel like my pores looks as clean, but i don't risk overexfoliating.
Hey Hey hello thank you for sharing the products you’re using. Mind if I ask what foundations/bb creams you use? I’m also allergic to any “cones” so I need help in finding make ups without it. :/
This is why I LOVE Liah! She doesn't just go with the popular opinion, she is truly well informed about what she's talking about. I've come to realize so many things thanks to her.
Ok so basically we shouldn't worry too much. Products that dangerously harm you aren't available in normal stores. If you get a breakout, that's not too bad because your body noticed an ingredient isn't good *for you*. (That's definitely better than something harming you and you don't notice.) You might just have an allergy against something or it doesn't suit you skin type OR your body is just unsure. As for me, I'm pretty sure that you shouldn't do like too much skin care, because your body usually knows what to do. If you're not sure how to start up a skin care routine though, don't hesitate to try yourself out. Maybe borrow something from your friends or relatives, so you dont have to buy something that might not even work, right? 😊
Hi Liah, again - thanks for a very informative video! I'd love it if you made another one with ingredients to actually avoid. Because there ARE harmful ingredients out there, e.g. SLS. I very much appreciate your objectivity and honesty, but this video makes it seem like there's nothing to worry about when buying cheap over the counter products. And that is unfortunately not the case. Sending love from Austria!
Almost all the sunscreens contains Silicone Dimethicone Silica etc and everytime I wear sunscreen I get pimple and my dermatologist says sunscreens causes acne and bumps. I try to eat clean as much as I can and I'm careful about cleansing my skin from sunscreen with double cleansing. But I still get break outs. They are not serious little breakouts but it is annoying 😥😥
ok so you're basically not going to read this but hey Liah! I sincerely wanted to thank you for your advice! I could've not get acne free without you. All the products that you recommend (or even close to that) and advices helped me alot. It was summer when I started wtaching your vids, I had acne for 4 years and now, it all cleared up!I barely have one. Thank you Liah. you're a savior. I couldnt believe that by just watching youtube videos could really help me. Loves from Philippines ❤😘
Hi Liah, thanks so much for all of your videos! I love the aesthetic of all of them - minimalistic, straight to the point, yet pleasing to the eye - but most of all the legit research and science that you put into all of your videos is so impressive to me. The fact that you put your MLA/APA citations in your UA-cam descriptions goes to show how reliable your info is. Your skin looks amazing and all of your hard work helps so many!
liah i was pleasantly surprised that you pulled out that aveeno body lotion as something that you like to use! i personally love aveeno and ive been using their moisturizing lotion for years now. it might not be the most luxurious or elegant moisturizer (it really doesnt fare well under makeup lol) but its something that ive come to trust
endohmiharu Liah reviewed one of those products in her best drugstore & korean moisturizers review (PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion) and approved of it, though she warned us of the paraben content, if ever anyone is sensitive of it.
I did read that it technically isn't necessary, but if your budget allows, there is no harm. People would say because the skin around your eyes are thinner and that eye creams are formulated with finer molecules and are less irritating but when you check the ingredients of eye creams and most moisturizers, there really isn't much difference. I use the same moisturizer (COSRX oil free lotion) by dabbing a small amount around my eye area without any issue. The ONLY issue that I can think of when using the same moisturizer for the eye area is if your moisturizer is very occlusive, thick and greasy which can make it difficult for the eye area to absorb the formulation.
Will Within Coconut oil worked really well for me to keep my under eyes very hydrated. Anusol also works amazingly, it temporarly plumps the skin to reduce fine lines and hydrates just as good or maybe better than coconut oil. Not sure how much it is but if its affordable I say definitely worth a try if you want to try new products :)
i’ve used silicone based products and all of those products clogged my pores and caused me horrible breakout. i’m using non silicone products and my skin has never been happier.
Silicon is great, nothing makes make up and skin look as smooth as silicon, but it really does make my skin break out. I can't wear any primer or foundation without having acne popping out. I found silicon free cc cream for my daily needs, my skin loves it, but for bigger events I sacrifice a few breakouts :) it's all about knowing your skin in the end
Thanks to Liah and Renee, my skin is much better. Still oily, but much better with the acne part. It really is true how every skin reacts differently to different products. Just keep it simple!
What do you think about silicones in hair care Liah? My question doesn't really has to do with skincare i know, but i really trust your opinion and wanted to ask
The hairs that are visible are considered dead. So using the silicone-based product on it won't really matter here. So don't over think it and enjoy the products.
Thank you so much for sharing all your references. I absolutely agree with you! I don’t go out of my way to avoid most chemicals companies and websites claim to be bad for your skin. I believe that it’s all about how your skin takes to the chemicals. People need to realize that to come up with a tailored skin care routine, it takes time, effort, research and some trial and error testing. It’s a curatorial process and not winning a lottery with just one product.
I respect and appreciate you so much, Liah. I can't believe how thoughtful your description boxes always are and the fact that you subtitle EVERY video. You are unbelievable. Mounds of love xoxo
What about carbocisteine? It's commonly used in "keratin" treatments and some people say that it's very toxic because it can expel formaldehyde when it is elevated at high temperatures.
I'm more concerned with the environmental impact of manufacturing certain ingredients and their effects when they end up in our water, our land, and in the air.
People like you just need to go live in the mountains and stay away from growing civilization. Or a better solution is to stop eating. That way you don't pollute us with your shit, piss, and air that you exhale.
@@NOTPC79 People like you should stay in prison, scientists has proven human behavior aka civilization are responsible to current climate change. Which means majority of our cooperation are producing a lot of substance that are harmful to our ecosystem GLOBALLY. Hello! Great video and very informative! I love your videos!!! What about Aluminium? It's mainly used in deodorants I think and there has been a lot of talk about it being carcinogenic?
Can you discuss if talc can really cause cancer? I have been using baby powder for setting my face and I am wondering if it also clogs my pores. Good thing is it doesn't cause me acne. Hope u read this! Love your content :--)
I been watching ur videos a lot these days and you give good explanations and information. I have a question.... I want to add some of cosrx products into my routine. I saw u posted a video about cosrx products before which made me to add it into my routines. My skin is oily around my T-zone, I have very sensitive skin, and I have a lot of reddish pimple scars around my cheeks, blemishes I had them for almost a year now. I stopped taking Accutane about four- five months ago. I still Break out but not bad as I used to, like three four pimples each week but it gets very red sometimes. So the product I wanted to add are : One step pimple clear pad after cleansing. For cleansing I use Clinique powder pressed that has %10 pure vitamins C to wash my face. so after the clear pad I will use AHA, BHA TONER, then cosrx snail essence, and then i use Clinique moisture surge extended thirst relief. Do you think if I use one step pimple and AHA,BHA at the same time is it too much?? exfoliating ? Will it break me out a lot is it good routine? I hope you can help and thank you
This is the best video that ive seen so far that explaines toxic skincare ingredients this well without being boring!! 😇 Your channel will always be my go to place for any kind of skin care reference!! ♡ The thing that worries me the most is not the safety of the product when it applies to the skin, but the safety of loved ones when they kiss my cheeks and so on. Thats why i am very concerned about the safety of products and tend to go with the all natural ingredients 😉
I always try to avoid certain ingredients in my skincare routine, including fragrance, mineral oil and alcohol but I'm not sure if all alcohol ingredients are bad. I've come across ingredients saying: cetyl alcohol (plant based), does that mean it's safe to use on my skin? Are some alcohols good and some alcohols bad? Or are they all bad? Can you do a more in depth video on different types of alcohols in skincare products coz it's so hard to avoid them at all cost but I'm afraid to chance it and aggravate my extremely sensitive skin!
Usually any ingredient that ends in -ol is alcohol based, but they're not all bad! Cetyl alcohol, as far as I'm aware and could be wrong, is okay, as well as butylene glycol, which is used in a lot of Korean skincare products and isn't harmful! It's a humectant that attracts moisture to the skin and breaks down into gamma-hydroxybutryic acid, which is naturally found in our bodies.
Good- 1) Silicones - cone , conol, silicone 2) Petroleum gel - no PHA in refining petroleum gel used in cosmetics 3) Urea - a humectant, NO - Diazolidinyl urea and imidazolidnyl urea - preservatives 4) Sunscreens - tinosorb A, M

Hi Liah first of all I am so happy to hear that you are going to have your own skin care line! I always struggle what kind of skin care products I should buy as I have acne prone sensitive skin. You have never talked about first aid beauty skin care products. Do you think they are good for sensitive skin? I would love to hear about your opinion. Thank you so much Liah. Have a great day!

I think more research is needed before talking to so many people about these ingredients. You missed the estrogen like behavior of parabens and the harmful effect on endocrinological disorders...and many more.
That's false, there is no research proving that in humans. Those negative effects your saying was seen in rats that were shoved full with parabens in high amounts that you will never use. Ever. You won't injest that ever.

I love your channel, however, ones I heard: "If you can´t eat these ingredients then you can´t apply them into your skin neither." And is mainly because everything we apply topically is absorbed by the human body and is accumulating over time. So even if those chemicals are very little, imagine use tons of products for more than 20 years! Personally, I love beauty products so, currently I am trying to balance between organic and non-organic beauty products and I have noticed a huge improvement in my skin :)
Topical absorption is in fact very limited. That’s why anti-aging products struggle to work because it’s hard to penetrate into the dermis layer which they should reach to promote collagen production. And even if a small amount goes into the body, our system is smart to let them out so it doesn’t accumulate inside our body!
thank u so much for this interesting and useful video Liah! always glade to learn something more about the huge word of cosmetics and beauty stuff. I wanna ask u if u can do a video about so what is really bad for our skin (beyond myths and false theories) (and maybe especially for acne prone skin..?) thank u so much again. XX

hey, doll! may I ask if it’s true that once our bodies ingest mineral oil, it can’t expel it? I’m concerned and afraid to use any lipstick containing mineral oil since I read paraffinum liquidum is also a hormone disrupter and linked to cancer.
Thanks Liah! This is soooo great! Everybody should watch this video! I have one question! 🙋🏼What do u think about PEG? Nowadays lots of Korean r worried about PEG. And I believe PEG is of course not beneficial ingredient and cheap but there is no reason we need to avoid. What do u think?
Liah, can I have an answer about a routine? What's come first in these products : The Ordinary Niacinamide serum, The Ordinary Hyaluronic serum , The Ordinary Rose Hip Oil, The Ordinary Natural Moisturizer. Can I mixed these active ingredients together? Or I should remove the hyaluronic serum? Skin type : Combination (Acne-prone) Age : 15 My Acne scars fade so slow? Why?
Tang Koungma I can't answer about everything, but I think you should remove hyaluronic serum because you are so young, you'll need this boost later. I'm 26 with the same skin type and just bought my first hyaluronic serum as my skin became a bit dryer lately and haven't even tried it yet (waiting to do it when winter will come).

Before, I used petroleum jelly as my moisturizer every night. I had no breakouts. In fact, it even helped alot when I had a pimple or two. But when I had this one pimple that wouldn't go away after like a month, I started to change my products. Then it got worse and here I am now, they've multiplied. Would it still be okay to use petroleum jelly?
I wonder if i layered two products containing silicone, one after the other, will the first one prevent the second one from penetrating or getting absorbed through the skin??
Liah, I am so happy you did this video! I thoroughly enjoy Lab Muffin Beauty Science and her videos as well! You both are bringing some levelheaded truth to consumers that is so refreshing in yet another area of life so many divisions are happening. I used to be what I guess people call a green beauty purist. I never gave much merit to the EWG though, And always relied on more solid research To gain conclusions about ingredients. Honestly, what I see at the heart of the matter is an issue of control, which is at the heart of human nature. We can greatly control the products and ingredients that we put onto our skin while we can’t have much control over the chemicals in our food and environment. My greatest issue with this philosophy about chemicals and personal care products is with that of every ingredient applied topically entering our bloodstreams. First of all, this statement is so biologically arrogant it’s just disturbing and makes me question the integrity of our education! Secondly. If every ingredient was able to penetrate the skin and reach the bloodstream, even at 60% absorption, we have a much greater problems than the products were applying to our skin! Wouldn’t we all be some very sick individuals? Like much more so than we already are in western America. But everyone everywhere would have worries because of the substances in our environment secondly. If every ingredient was able to penetrate the skin and reach the bloodstream, even at 60% absorption, we have a much greater problems than the products were applying to our skin! Wouldn’t we all be some very sick individuals? Like much more so than we already are and western America. But everyone everywhere would have worries because of the substances in our environment both organic and inorganic, man-made and nature made, Seeping into our bodies. The skin was designed to protect our bodies from the outside world and it is not like the rest of our organs. It has an entirely different function and that is to protect and cover what is on the inside. Thank you so much for making this video, again, and I sure do hope that many people can see this and consider the facts and derive their own personal conclusion based in good and valid information!
I recently started to skip morning cleasing, but my skin gets super oily (even on the cheeks, and I have combination skin) and I’m considering returning to my old routine. What do you suggest me to do? Thank you for your time, you’re gorgeous :)

Shout out to Aveeno lavender body lotion! I've learned over time that "natural" does not inherently mean better. Can you do a video purely on concept of "suffocating the skin"? I'm not sure scientifically if skin actually suffocates, does that just mean the pores are covered, and what things actually do suffocate skin if so?

I can't find a mineral only sunscreen that's silicone free, but these cause the least break out as long as I cleanse my face with cleansing oil at the end of the day and don't wear it more than 10 hours.)
PM:
Oil Cleanser: DHC Deep Cleansing Oil
Cleanser: Innisfree Jeju Volcanic Pore Cleansing Foam
Toner: Pixi Glow Tonic
Essence: Missha First Treatment Essence Intensive Moist (This contains dimethicone, but far down the ingredients list.
I've come to realize so many things thanks to her.

you’re the most helpful skincare youtuber out there !!! you’re one of the only youtubers who don’t try to sell us unreasonable claims or products ^^
What about Mica and Talc???
Saame sis even though I have to wear it to protect me from uva and skin damages but I gotta have a pimple after using it
thank you for ruling out these misconceptions! i was so glad to see Michelle as well!
ok so you're basically not going to read this but hey Liah!
+twintywanpaylots x holy moly I’m so happy for you!!!!
SMAnthonyW to be honest we also really need an answer for this
+SMAnthonyW I haven’t yet found a good drugstore brand that I can confidently recommend yet but there are certainly decent products out there!
Liah Yoo 리아유, what about CeraVe? I've heard good things about that brand, have you used any of their products?
endohmiharu Liah reviewed one of those products in her best drugstore & korean moisturizers review (PM Facial Moisturizing Lotion) and approved of it, though she warned us of the paraben content, if ever anyone is sensitive of it.
Paolo Lumontod, thanks :))
You are one of the few YT I’ve found that debunks all these so-called “toxic” compounds.
Do you think eye cream is necessary? Because I typically just use a tiny bit of coconut oil
i remember she talked about this once with gothamista in a collab video!
+Will Within using coconut oil is fine :)
Thank you for responding!
Thanks for this video Liah! Love your scientific approach on this
i’ve used silicone based products and all of those products clogged my pores and caused me horrible breakout. i’m using non silicone products and my skin has never been happier.

What do you think of The Body Shop products?
Silicon is great, nothing makes make up and skin look as smooth as silicon, but it really does make my skin break out. I can't wear any primer or foundation without having acne popping out. I found silicon free cc cream for my daily needs, my skin loves it, but for bigger events I sacrifice a few breakouts :) it's all about knowing your skin in the end

What do you think about silicones in hair care Liah?
My question doesn't really has to do with skincare i know, but i really trust your opinion and wanted to ask
+:D/ xP I find no problem with it and many of my hair care products contain silicon
Liah Yoo 리아유 I see. I should really stop panicking about it too much, since that is quite stressful from time to time
Thank you for answering :)
Could you pls throw some light on propylene glycol? Is it bad for the skin ?
i'm soooo glad you made this video!!!

It's nothing wrong for people being considerate to their environment, but it is clearly something wrong for supporting people to sabotage our planet, in the name of civilization.
@@NOTPC79 congrats major of clown town, waste of oxygen. Siloxanes accumulates in people and degrades slowly in nature. Also guess what!? It's already found in high levels in fish and other marine animals. This is something that will effect us sooner or later.

OMG THANKS FOR MAKING THIS VIDEO! there's always some horrible ingredients in skincare and im like why is my skin breaking out!?!!?! much love liah!

So the product I wanted to add are :
One step pimple clear pad after cleansing. I hope you can help and thank you
I always watch the ads till the end even if they are long and boring cause I really like your work and the effort you put into it.
+shaun oodoomansaib Thank you so much, that means a lot❤️
This is the best video that ive seen so far that explaines toxic skincare ingredients this well without being boring!! 😇
Your channel will always be my go to place for any kind of skin care reference!! ♡
The thing that worries me the most is not the safety of the product when it applies to the skin, but the safety of loved ones when they kiss my cheeks and so on. Thats why i am very concerned about the safety of products and tend to go with the all natural ingredients 😉
Every video of yours is so informative!!! 😍
I really like these types of videos. I hope you can make some more like this!!
Here is the best solution to your problem. Don't use any products cause the fear patrol has got to you already.
Go watch veronica gorgeois’s video on alcohol
Stearyl alcohol is fine but avoid denatured alcohols
ua-cam.com/video/8Qu-UxdI190/v-deo.html
Good-
1) Silicones - cone , conol, silicone
2) Petroleum gel - no PHA in refining petroleum gel used in cosmetics
3) Urea - a humectant,
NO - Diazolidinyl urea and imidazolidnyl urea - preservatives
4) Sunscreens - tinosorb A, M

Hi Liah first of all I am so happy to hear that you are going to have your own skin care line! I always struggle what kind of skin care products I should buy as I have acne prone sensitive skin. Thank you so much for making this video! What’s your lip product? It looks so pretty on you!
I think more research is needed before talking to so many people about these ingredients. You missed the estrogen like behavior of parabens and the harmful effect on endocrinological disorders...and many more.
Andreea Lavinia Onuta thank you !!!! I agree
Still no research about endocrine disruption.
That's false, there is no research proving that in humans. Those negative effects your saying was seen in rats that were shoved full with parabens in high amounts that you will never use. Ever. You won't injest that ever.

I love how much information you put into every video!
From everything I learned and watched my skin has become so much better! :)
Love your sunglasses! Where are they from?

But when I had this one pimple that wouldn't go away after like a month, I started to change my products. Then it got worse and here I am now, they've multiplied. Petroleum jelly is to hold in moisturize that is there so basically used it as an oil aka after moisturizer
