Norwegian female choir Cantus with conductor Tove Ramlo-Ystad perform "Eatnemen Vuelie", composed by Frode Fjellheim.
Ignoring Frozen for a moment, this is a beautiful piece of choir music on its own.
Krista Masucci Frozen just put this on the map. It was actually written back in 1996.
I know, but on it's own, it's gorgeous!
We're singing this for choir.
***** Precisely :P
Kristoff Bjorgman Sami-Norwegian actually bahaha. The film's setting is based off of Bergen Norway. A city surrounded by fjords.
Thumbs up if watching Frozen brought you here!!
Yessss
Watching Frozen did bring me here, but I have been a Frode Fjellheim fan since my choir did Night Yoik 9 years ago. I bought all the sheet music to each of his songs, but never looked at it lol. The only ones I knew up until watching Frozen were Night Yoik and Northern Lights.
Unfortunately. This great song was wasted on that sad movie.
they did waste it on frozen to bad to sad
Levon Gevorgyan why do you think that it was wasted on frozen?
I wish the soundtrack to Frozen included more stuff like this.
Same the choir songs are so beautiful, listen Hierm Alnadr or whatever lol
Well, you're in luck friend
You're in luck. Hunchback of Notre Dame exists
Who knew a Disney movie would have something appropriate to sing at Church?
The Hunchback of Notre Dame has an entire catholic mass in the background.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame already had this.
The hymn is a about christianity, or more precisely Jesus Christ.
Disney movies about divers Coulter's need to have more folk songs like this
inuyashasoul Well, other than Hunchback, since Christianity was a major theme in that movie.
Watched Frozen 4 times in the theater and never got tired of it... and being in a choir for almost all of my youth days... this particular song is one of biggest reasons why I keep watching it!
Six. ;3 And I'm STILL not tired of it. It's insane how good it is.
I agree with you mate! And I envy you so much for being able watch it six times... It's already out of the theaters in my place but I'm definitely going to get the Blu ray
Blu ray will be released on march while digital copy will be on feb 25
vesdan13 Feb 25 is when Thor: The Dark World will be on blu-ray.
Me too
god bless altos
Amen to that!!
No kidding!!!
I’m 15 and im one if not the only true alto in my high school choir so sometimes I join the tenors lmao
After the stunning intro, this is an arrangement of the hymn Fairest Lord Jesus. The melody is St. Elizabeth, and is a 19th century Silesian German folk song, I believe the singing style in the intro is meant to evoke Sami folk music. The Sami used to be knowns as the Lapps, but today that name is disapproved of.
You are right, the melody is of "Schönster Herr Jesus" - but it is no "folksong" in the meaning of the word, it is a church hymnal of catholic tradition - yet, sung in protestant churches also. Interestingly, the melody became known over the borders of German speaking countries and got Danish christmas lyrics - so it is a Danish christmas song. It was the song that inspired Hans Christian Andersen to write his "Snow Queen", where it is referenced several times. Since the "Snow Queen" inspired "Frozen" (and is therefore called the "Ice Queen" in German ;) ) - this closes the circle in the nicest way.
@@elektra121 This is just about the coolest thing I've read all year
Let's face it: Frozen brought almost all of us here. :)
It matters not how we arrived here. What matters is that we all stayed for the good music!
My choir is singing it, I had no clue it was in frozen!
My choir is also singing this
A trip to Tromsø in Northern Norway brought me here and not Frozen TBH.
My interest in joki’s brought me here
Your music has been magical in my home. My daughter of course discovered you guys on Frozen, but she loves the beauty of your voices whenever. She has special needs and has had a great deal of trouble learning to speak. Your music has opened her up to practicing the vowel sounds that she was afraid to try in front of others before - just so she can feel like part of your choir. Thank you!
I had a bunch of trouble learning to talk as well, no words til was past 4 years old. if anything if she wants to be in a choir i say go for it, just get her to listen for sounds and to either be the same or something that compliments what's already there. both are great for whatever musical stuff one goes for.
Metalchemist2 She's only 5 now, but we are scouting out potential choirs for her. Music does have an amazingly therapeutic magic doesn't it?
indeed. can change how people feel, think, act, and move just by how it is put and when
I used to sing in a choir and I remember one exercise we used to do which I found fascinating. We had very varied vowel sounds, different accents, and had to learn to standardise them.
The exercise takes you through all the vowels in turn, although not in alphabetical order, but shows you how we use our whole mouth.
So
Make the broadest cheesiest eeeeeeee you can, exaggerate your face. That is one extreme.
The other is uuuuuuuuu (rhyme with Boo)with lips pursed into a forward tight little circle.
And notice the shape of the tongue (raised or flat). That has an effect. Now glide from one sound to the other without moving your lips. Experiment. Try doing eeee with your lips in the uuu shape and you may manage a German ü sound.
Then glid from U to eee and back again, play around with it.
Then, for the vowels practice, go from Uuu to aaah(wide open mouth) then widen to eee. Notice that eeee is a horizontal shape and UUU could be thought of as vertical. And Aaah is in the middle. Now glide from eeee to uuu through aaah. And back again
You might start to hear harmonics, which is fun, another note on top.
You will find any vowel you want, certainly any English or latinate vowel somewhere in there
Hope that helps
And to say that choir practice is a great leveller, doing some very strange exercises for voice, body and mental work too, and we don’t mind having a go, so don’t feel embarrassed to pull faces to do this.
The harmonics are great fun by the way.
this always gives me goosebumps. the good kind.
+Tetris_Citadel Thank you so much :)

Imagine somewhere calm
Imagine somewhere safe
Imagine yourself in a frozen forest
i was in a buffet but ok
Was that a reference to Black Ops 3 and Frozen all in one?
HENDRICKS!
I love how many people are talking about Frozen bringing them here. I actually learned that this was an appropriation from the Sami people, and the original movie appropriated their culture, having zero mention to their culture, and zero consult with the Sami people about how to appropriately portray them in their movie. But they made it up to them in Frozen 2 when they directly consulted them and even had a contract drawn up with the transnational Sami Council. I found all this out because I was curious if Margu in Klaus was actually speaking their language. Turns out yes she is.
2:23 is an accurate representation of what an Alto I/Soprano II sections SHOULD sound like. I've known this Cantus for years now and this performance still to this day gives me goosebumps on my goosebumps.
The heartiest song ever fitted into a Disney movie.
Worth noting is that the track from Frozen is not actually the same as this. Christophe Beck arranged it so as not to include the tune of Fairest Lord Jesus because that would have sparked some red flags.
Also, didn't the Frozen track also include drums? just going off of my memory here
AmazangPeach!
I thought so too, but it's actually just vocals in the beginning of Frozen. Great music regardless =)
xXSpaceNinjaXx No there are drums
that's nice of him not to make it a religious piece
@Chuck Sta. Maria No, the song is a joik which does not have lyrics but the tune is based on 'Sweet is the earth/Fairest Lord Jesus'.
God bless Disney. Third time in a row recently a movie they've made has cut to my soul with the music in it.
What were the other two?
Disney didnt make the music though
Just watched Frozen today and this song is stuck in my head!! Simply love it!!
I love your Logo Mona Lisa I'm a big fan of the painting picture frame 🙂
One of the girls in the a cappella choir I'm in is trying to convince our choir director to let us sing this for contest...I hope he approves!
I'm doing the same thing!! hahha I'm trying to convince my choir director to let us Vuelie in our next concert... but i haven't got the orginal score. Can you help me?
Greta Nirta www.boosey.com/shop/prod/Fjellheim-Frode-Eatnemen-Vuelie-SSAA-synthesizer-percussion/707564
Thank you very much!!! =)
This would make an excellent song for Civilization VI
I bet there will be many carolers singing this song for Christmas this year and the next. This is truly the most beautiful Norwegian song I've heard and Frozen lead me right to it.
Frozen brought me here.~
when I first heard this in Frozen, not only did I know the movie would be AMAZING, but I got serious chills ♥
Frozen!
i'm singing this for concert choir and I can't stop listening to this.
Thumbs up for a shout out to Cantus
My sis and I recognized Fairest Lord Jesus in this piece! Beautiful! And wonderful to have also heard it on Frozen.
Music that gave the chills.
I'm rather disappointed that to learn that Disney specifically asked the composer to remove the hymn tune when rewriting this song for "Frozen." I understand why they did it for marketing reasons--besides the fact that this original piece is too long for the movie opening--but honestly, they didn't hide the fact that Elsa had her coronation in a church and was ordained by a guy who was clearly dressed as an Orthodox priest. Boo. Well, I'm glad I found the original, because this is gorgeous! I'm having a Frozen-inspired wedding, and I was going to use "Vuelie" from the movie score, but I think I will use this original instead.
This is the last part of the song: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fairest_Lord_Jesus in Norwegian though. It's a christmas carol, so you should use the english for your wedding :)
Is your dress going to mimick the one worn by Elsa? Sounds incredible! I'm soooo on a Frozen kick right now it's not funny, and to top it all off, I'm a 31-year-old straight guy! My wife and I both are on a Frozen kick.
This song makes me think of the Northern Lights...
Kavv Thanks for the link! We ended up using this version in our wedding, since it was the perfect crossover between religious and geeky film reference. :) Most of the people who were at my wedding would have recognized the tune regardless. It's a classic hymn.
jonegger1983 Oh, my husband was just as much in favor of the "Frozen" idea as I was. He was actually more stubborn about working in extra references to the film than I was, lol! But yes, I had a custom dress sewn that was inspired by Elsa's blue dress. So much more exciting than a traditional white dress, and ended up being cheaper, too, ha! Thanks, though! :)
Rachel Petersen You know what really gives me chills about this song? All the voices at the end singing the melody following a large yet gradual crescendo throughout the intro -- just as "Frozen" appears on the screen, as if to say,"get ready for some Nordic awesomeness... get ready...! BOOYA!!"
Wow, I've been singing this song in church since I was little without realizing what I was singing! So cool. I love Northern European culture.
Sounds like heaven
This is why I miss being in choir.Beautiful harmony.lovely sound.
Please Frode Fjellheim create more music for this fantastic gem of a choir Cantas they are simply wonderful to listen to this is what music is about bringing the old culture with the contemporary simply amazing.. Long may it continue. From Elizabeth Andrew
Cantus is releasing a new CD in March 2015, and they are collaborating with Frode on some of the songs.
I sang this song last year in the Texas All-State Women's Choir and absolutely loved it!! I was singing along to it when I watched Frozen and could not stop smiling!!
Do you still have the sheet music? I was wondering what the time signature was for this piece.
Katherine Henderson It's in cut time, but since it's such a slow tempo, it feels like 4/4.
Best bit of Frozen as a support worker I have now been forced to watch it four times
I have a cousin who sings with Cantus. I was so excited to hear this song in the movie. The Norse are represented!!!
This is legendary. I got all my hairs stand up to their tips. Irresistible... respect for the makers.
My schools women's a cappella choir is sing this song for our spring concert. I am so excited. Such a beautiful song.
This sounds so AMAZING! We are doing it for a concert at my school, i'm so excited! This song is beautiful! BEAUTIFUL!

First semester Women's Chorus brought me here, really awesome being able to hear recognizable music play such a huge role in Frozen
Saw this choir last night as part of the Tapestry International Festival of Women Choirs in Vancouver, BC. Cantus gave an extraordinary performance. If you have a chance to see this choir live GO!
+Lauryn Hayden Thank you so much! :)

Frozen
Here from frozen trailer. You guys brought so much power into the movie
Very beautiful song love it
I made a strings cover of this beautiful song in Music Studio on my iPad... I love my cover but this version is just more amazing...
+elsa1942 Could we hear it?
Feels like out of this world..
While I was listening to this, I accidentally opened Baba Yetu in a separate window. I left it on for a few seconds. It was the most amazing sounding mistake I have ever made!
shivers
Simply beautiful. Wrote the chorus in my local language Hindi.
ना ना ना हेइया ना
हा ई याः ना हा
ना हेइया हेइया नाया नूआ
हाना हेयु नूआ ना
It is just beautifull
Wow, that is one beautifully religious hymn.
This is song is too good!
Just found out the treble choir at my son's HS is doing this for their December concert - can't wait!
+Dean Miller Good luck, we're sure it will sound wonderful :)
I'm so moved by this song and this kind of music. Thank you for sharing your gift of music and voice to us. So heavenly made...
I love your music! All the way from Philippines'. 🎶
Beautiful song.
Wow, is it just me or does anyone else feels overjoyed and inspired?
My choir is going to sing this song. When we found out, we all started screaming! So excited!
when most people hear this at the beginning of Frozen, they think it sounds like its from The Lion King, or something like that; my choir is learning this song and it actually fits the kind of music that would be sung in the area Frozen is set in (Scandinavia and around there). :3
too goood!!!!! Hats off to Norwegians & especially Frode Fjellheim
I wish i was still active in choirs. But i'm not. And this songs makes me want to be active again!!
best vocal ever!
The reason this might remind you of christmas is that the melody is taken from Deilig Er Jorden, a famous Danish and Norwegian christmas song. This version also has the lyrics.
I love This choir so much i would love to join the choir team ☺️
Absolutely fantastic adaptation of the Hymn with the words Dearest Lord Jesus thee will I honour What a wonderful choir with depth. Thank you so much. Kind regards Elizabeth Andrew . NZ
We're singing this in choir! And I just can't wait to hear us preform this!!!!

+Marilyn Gronner Thank you!
What a lovely choir .
Awesome!
+Jenna W. J. Thank you :)
Such a hard song to sing. We're doing it in choir, and it sounds lovely but it's so hard to do (at least for me, anyways, as a 2nd soprano aka the drone of the song). And we raised it up a 3rd, which has pleasant results.
Love it though.
my choir is doing this now, it really is hard. we're not changing the music though (& i'm a soprano two too !!)
I heard them singing live, pretty costumes, awesome performance :)
+Enikő Hintya Thank you! :)
so soothing i love this so much
Thank you for sharing this beautiful music! I knew there was something heavenly about the intro of the Frozen music. I just couldn't put my finger on it...
definitely gonna try to get this suggested to my choir director

We will be singing this in choir this year. Lovely Alto II part!
This song is amazing. So powerful and yet so peaceful. :)
Ahhh! Love this! Gorgeous! FROZENNNNNN!
My choir sang with Cantus a couple years ago!
We did this at our harmony group. It's really nice and fun to sing with the different parts.

Some new kind of beautiful this is.
