2 dudes sitting in a room listening to every type of music , enjoying the music having a laugh chatting about the way music affects your lives. You 2 guys make me laugh, bring me to music I would never listen to usually, if only everything in life was as good as these videos the world wouldn’t be as messed up as it is. Thanks guys for making me feel better about the journey we are on. Cheers for the laughs and a big hey ho to every other person out there in UA-cam land.
That instrument you were asking about is a pedal steel guitar. Also Merle Haggard was incarcerated in San Quentin when Johnny Cash played there in 1958. He said seeing Johnny Cash made him want to change his ways and pursue a career in music.
I used to hate country but after I deployed to the middle east, hearing it over there was such an emotional experience because it reminded me so much of home.
Mamma tried by Merle Haggard is one of his most outstanding pieces, a true story about his life, along with Sing Me Back Home. About his life in prison. Id recommend Willie Nelson. Him and Merle were the two best. Check out 7 spanish angels.
Just found y'all a few hours ago when one of your country reactions showed up in my recommended videos. I LOVE your reactions and the fact that you react to some country songs. Can't wait to see more. Thank you!
Hey Yall ! I love your reactions . One country music artist you should check out is Dwight Yoakam. I'd recommend Guitars and Cadillacs to start , or 1000 Miles from Nowhere . He did a cover of Sloop John B , which is a an old song from the Islands of the Caribbean , also done by the Beach Boys . The Beach Boys is another awesome band you should look into .
Merle Haggard is the greatest of all time, as far as country artist go. King George is the king but Merle wrote over 800 songs himself and had such a smooth voice. RIP TO A LEGEND
LandOfBeerAndHoney All-time great! So surprisingly metaphysical it threw me for a loop the first time I heard it as a wee lad. I think these cats would really get a kick out of dissecting the lyrics.
You guys made me look up that song... written and recorded on the spot when their driver said he hated the city, wanted Montana. On the spot made it up, you guys heard the first time any band ever played it! Actual musicians are cool
Really appreciate this reaction guys. I've grew up listening to Merle. Know this song like the back of my hand. Your take on "there's folks who've never worked and they've got plenty" is an interpretation I had never considered. I had always just taken it as a comment about people born with silver spoons. I think Merle meant it both ways most likely.
Fun fact about Merle he was in San quinton prison when Johnny cash played a concert there that inspired Merle to make music. Years later Merle would do the same for David Allen Coe.
sam dire yeah I was just pointing out how much influence Johnny cash had and not just country he wasn’t country he was the golden age of rock and roll Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, and the man in black himself mr. Johnny cash signed to sun records within weeks of each other it wasn’t until his latter years cash was considered country. And the fact that we have two of the greatest (Merle and DAC) bc Johnny took a chance the record company didn’t want to do, play prisons, is incredible with that said Merle ain’t no Willie or Waylon
Steven Jones, good point. In the 50s there was no such designation as "rock and roll" and "country." That didn't really happen until later, probably the 60s. I think the Beatles and the British Invasion pushed rock away from what became country and western. Even into the 70s the genres weren't all that far apart. Charlie Daniels, Allman Brothers, Skynyrd, the Eagles- the whole Southern Rock era bridged that gap. It's funny how times change. Today, bands like Blackberry Smoke are playing the Opry in Nashville.
I think you all would enjoy country songs like "3 wooden crosses" by Randy Travis or "he stoped loving her today" by George Jones. Both showcase good storytelling and lyricism in the country genre. Bless up.
I don't listen country much but my mom did somewhat, and Merle is someone I can listen to,and this is real Country. Believe it or not a lot of metal heads, metal musicians are inspired by this old school country Cash,Haggard etc... because they did talk about things they've gone through in life and social issues just like metal does And just because country isn't loud like metal the lyrical content there are a lot of similarities And like you guys said old school country is amazing, great job again guys love it👍🤘
I am a born and bred free thinker! I love that y’all play every genre of music. I was raised listening to everything from classical, opera, showtunes, The Rat Pack, classic rock, old school country, the blues, southern gospel - all of it! I was a teen in the ‘80’s so I dove into punk, new wave, and then grunge. Music transcends all. I discovered your channel through your Led Zeppelin reaction and am hooked! Thank you for sharing your love of music with us, and keeping it real. With all of that being said, I’d love to see a reaction to The Smiths, How Soon is Now, BB King, Man Child, The Beatles, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Foo Fighters, These Days or Sunday Rain.
If you want to listen some metal next time, try Dio-Holy Diver or the hard rock masterpiece: Rainbow-Stargazer Anyway i also love Haggard so im going to watch this now 'cause you guys are awesome!
Lmao I like how instantaneously y’all were like “yep, that’s country” Also im digging those music cuts and edits y’all are putting like the Joe Cocker at the end. Liked that idea of listening to a song and not turning it off because I do that sometimes thinking hmmm this not a bad song and just let it rock. Dope reaction guys and keep up the good work.
Brutal R1 the only two things in life that make it worth living.... hahaha everyone I know gives me shit for liking old country like that. They listen to the newer country, but the actual country new shit like Luke Combs, Alan Jackson, Brantley Gilbert, Toby Keith, etc. I grew up on stuff like Willie and Waylon 🤷🏼♂️. I didn’t know anything else until junior high 😂
I live in Bakersfield, Ca. also. Merle is my 2nd Cousin on my Mother’s side. They Boxcar House he grew up in is at the Kern Country Museum & the Downtown Post Office was just recently Dedicated to Merle.
Every time I quit a job, this song is my jam! I love all genres of music, but, because of my dad, Mearle Haggard is my go-to Country Artist. Thanks for reviewing this song, guys!
Dwight is one of those genius songwriters that should have 10x the following he has. His vocals and that Bakersfield sound are off-putting to a lot of people though, I think. He is the definition of twang. I love it, as I'm sure you do- but he's a tough one on new ears to country.
Classic. I believe the woman singing harmony was Leona Williams, his wife at the time. She also wrote the only song on the album that Merle did not write I think it was called Texas fiddles or something.
Mr05chuck Bonnie Owens sung background vocals on almost all of his records.... She was his wife for a long time also. I dont think Leona ever really made it on many of his songs since they were only married for a short time in the mid 80s.
I grew up listening to Merle Haggard and a ton of country, but today I listen to a lot of rock and metal, some rap, some country, and some of everything else basically. I just want to say that I really enjoy watching you guys talk about music, and I think it's awesome that you're so open to different music, and I think you do a great job of approaching unfamiliar music in a neutral way, regardless of the positive or negative bias related to said music. Keep on keeping on.
That steel guitar sound at the beginning of the song, which prompted you guys to say “that’s country music”, is a signature of what became known as ‘the Bakersfield sound’. It was popularized by artists like Merle Haggard and Buck Owens - the latter known for his role as co-host of the tv show Hee-Haw. The Bakersfield sound went on to dominate 1970’s country music, and was an important bridge -along with Southern Rock - to the modern country sound heard on the radio today.
Now when I listen to songs I find myself wondering what your reaction would be. Today I was re-blown away by the guitar work on The Outlaws song "Green Grass and High Tides".
Green Grass would be amazing, and Allman Bros are one of my all time fave classic rock bands... either of these would be especially awesome. Classic Rock and Jazz are the only two major genres these guys don't do on here, and tbh jazz would be nearly impossible given their format...
great call! Green Grass and High Tides is a song that fell through the cracks for some unexplained crazy reason. Such a good song that deserves waaaaayyy more credit than it got.
I can´t believe you guys haven´t played a song by metal legend Ronnie James Dio yet. The guy who invented the metal horns! Dio - Don´t Talk To Strangers!
I'll agree to that, and I'm one of of the metal guys who came on board with the Slayer and Metallica reactions - I don't know very much at all about this classic country music, and I like what I'm hearing much better than the newer stuff my coworkers used to play on the radio at one of my previous jobs. I really appreciate being part of the reactions to these great old country songs, since I've never heard them before, either!
I'm the same way I am a HUGE Metallica fan I drove to Dallas and seen em last year but I got into metal when I was about 10 and before that was all classic country still love em both
Leona Belle Helton (born January 7, 1943 in Vienna, Missouri) is an American country music singer known professionally as Leona Williams. Active since 1958, Williams has been a backing musician for Loretta Lynn and Merle Haggard, to whom she was married between 1978 and 1983
Saw in concert eighties excellent he played this song and what is great we were moving to Montana best decision I ever made. He died lung cancer but kept his voice to the end. RIP
Ok, I've got the country song for you! And it's a duet! Whiskey Lulliby by Brad Paisley and Allison Krauss! BUT, you gotta watch the video as you do the review! This is probably the best mainstream country song to come out in the vast 20 years.
That lady singing back-up is Leona Williams, and it's neat how you guys picked up on not only her vocals but also the contribution that that style of back-up singing added to the greatness of the music. She's a very interesting story. Williams was a young singer-songwriter and a lifelong musician who'd cut a few minor singles for MCA (including the first album recorded in a prison by a female singer, in San Quentin, no less) when she joined Merle's road band as the "girl singer". In those days, most country touring acts were sort of package deals, where you not only got your star but also several other members that took standard moments to shine. You had a hot picker, usually a "brothers harmony" or "family gospel" back-up group, sometimes a high-lonesome tenor, and a girl singer. In the mid '70s, Williams replaced Merle's estranged second wife Bonnie Owens, who'd toured with Merle during his star making days in the '60s. She and Merle married in 1978. They eventually divorced in 1983, and by then she'd written two of Merle's Number One hits. One was a song called "You Take Me For Granted", where the singer tells his beloved how devastated he is that she seems to not really care if he loves her or not, he's just there. It's made all the more powerful by the fact Leona wrote it about how she feels Merle treated her, and he knew it. Okay, so there's all that then. Good stuff, guys, keep it up.
One of my favorite Hag songs , i had to move to a big city once and live there for work but i was still a country boy and played this song every day until i moved back to my country roots.
Fun fact about this song, it was written by Merle’s tour bus driver, who was getting tired of driving to all the “big dirty cities” love the page guys keep it coming!
That thing you recognized at the start is a lap steel guitar. Every genre of music has “standard” licks and chord progressions. The line played is the equivalent of cross string bends you hear in every blues solo.
I just came across you all's videos today and I can't stop watching you guys are very refreshing. It's good to see some young folk out there getting out of their comfort zone and listening to other types of music and actually giving other types of music a fair Shake. You guys keep it up love it two thumbs up!!!
Country isn't my specialty, but "Highwaymen" With Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard & Chis Chistopherson is classic! If not for a video listen to it on your own time. {their version of "Ghost-riders In The Sky" is cool too} Thanks guys, you're the only reaction channel I actually watch {mostly for the Metal}! TY!
Nice review guys. I haven't heard that song since I was a Country DJ 30 years ago. Thanks for bringing it back. Keep digging. There's great music everywhere.
Worth mentioning that she was married to Buck Owens too. Thanks for bringing that up, she doesn't get enough credit. She was also the subject of the song "Today I started Loving you again"
I like merge haggard! He has a lot of good music. I'm pleased with the way you both listen to music and just enjoy music. I'm a metal head and I listen to everything! There's to much music out there to be hooked on just one genre.
Posers and money chasers make up 90% of any genre, but that 10% left over is made up of real, honest people who are doing it from the heart. It doesn't matter what the genre is. Hell, you might not even like the genre , but there is no denying the authenticity of it when you hear it. And what George said about background music was on point. Haggard is best served with a cold beer, a fat J and some friends shooting the shit on the porch. It's mood music that does not require a great amount of focus. Another good one guys. It might be futile but here's my obligatory request: IGORRR - Opus Brain
Look up Today I Started Loving You Again. He was my favorite since I was a little girl. The harmony was done by his wife Bonnie. Then after they divorced she still sang with him.
Next metal reaction needs to be some Ronnie James dio! Probably the best metal vocals in history check out Black Sabbath the dio years you won't be disappointed
Love Dio and the Dio years but personally Ozzy personifies Black Sabbath. Dio made it into a different band albeit an awesome one you can really tell Tony adjusted his riffs for Dio's melodies. If they were to review Dio years then I would say Heaven and hell or Lady Evil would be perfect. Although I still believe Lost in Vegas needs more ozzy and get down to the roots
Do some Darius Rucker. My Favorite song of his is ( I Don't think about it ) he was the lead singer of hootie and the blowfish in the 90s. Some may say it's not real country but his story is pretty awesome going from one genre (pop rock ) then going on his own to do country.
I do my best house cleaning to classic country!!! Did he say Duets??? How about Kenny and Dolly!!! "Islands In The Stream!!!!" Greatest mind opening classic duet ever! Trio...? Reba n B&D.....If u see him/ If you see her. Mad vocals y'all!
Merle Haggard is a true Legend in country music!! He was a clown and loved to laugh!! His writing and deep friendships with other country artist is inspirational...young singers, musicians and song writers could learn so much from him IF they chose to...
This was my dad back in the day. He has literally said “take this job and shove it!” And he tells me to this day at 76 yrs old that he did it “my way”. Grew up with this music!
Merle was the poet of the working man. He embodied everything working America is. Merle’s music will be played 100 years after his death because you cannot deny the truth in all his songs. I’d love, absolutely love to see you guys do more reviews on Merle’s music. I’m 20 years old growing up around city folk but my roots are what Merle talks about. I have many African American friends that cannot relate or even try to listen to Merle and real country music so to see you guys doing this is truly awesome. Definitely a subscribe and definitely liking and sharing your guys’ page! Love it y’all! Listen to more Merle! Mama tried, sing me back home, daddy frank. You cannot go wrong with any of his music!!
He was actually a singer before going to prison. It was during his time in prison that he realized that he needed to change his life path, and started pursuing music more seriously.
Well guys. After watching two videos I smashed that subscribe button! It’s so refreshing to see people that can enjoy music across genre, cultural and generational lines. I love all types of music. And it’s great to not feel alone in that anymore! You guys are class acts. Thanks for the videos. Keep up the good work.
Now that you've tapped into Merle Haggard, you need to try out David Allen Coe. You never even call me by my name, aka, The Greatest Country and Western Song!!!! Up vote this shit!!
Yeah, David Allan Coe has a few racist songs, so I surely would not dig too far lol....however, they were on a comedy album he did and he had a black drummer in his band for years. But it's still really fucked up and wrong, regardless. There's also a lot of super ignorant racist stuff out there attributed to him that are mislabeled as him that are actually Johnny Rebel songs...because of the one or two racist songs that DAC did on his joke album, a lot of people think Johnny Rebel's stuff is DAC too and it's not.
Country for me is good if you're out in the open air of well, The country. It all depends on the environment. But I enjoy Americana or even traditional. Bluegrass is good as well. I really can't get into modern country though as it boors the living madness out of me.
I really enjoy watching your videos - how you listen and really seem to enjoy the different kinds of music. I also enjoy your analysis of each song - you put a lot of thought into it. Keep up the good work.
I’ve introduced my grand children to old music and they love it all.I have a large vinyl collection. I want one of them to take it and love it someday .because it’s priceless in it true state. They tripped when I explained white noise and 45s blew them away.

Just remember that Haggard was the "Poet of the working man." The working man comes in every color!
There are alot of people who have forgotten that.
Mister Grandpa's Bakery Yes he was. Was it Merle that did ‘Take This Job and Shove It’? Lol
@@BelindaTN No that was David Allen Coe.

As a rock fan I discovered Merle Haggard in recent years just after his passing and I got to say Merle is the man.
He was indeed. A quiet poet who lived his life extremely modestly, and never compromised.
Fun little fact for you guys: Merle Haggard was an inmate at one of the prisons that Johnny Cash famously went and performed for, back in the day.
San Quentin
Another fun fact is : Johnny Cash started 2 Forest Fires on drunken benders, so stick that in your pipe and smoke that.

J Wilson Handmade Knives Has a similar formula to Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Freebird" but not the same level of fame. Amazingly good guitar work for sure.
I can´t believe you guys haven´t played a song by metal legend Ronnie James Dio yet. The guy who invented the metal horns!
Dio - Don´t Talk To Strangers!
Tompa83 heaven and hell
Rainbow-Stargazer
Holy diver or rainbow in the dark
Thank you for reacting to REAL country!
I second this motion
RIP
You Guys should check out Merle Haggard with Willie Nelson, Pancho and the Lefty
Stefan Smit living on the road my friend
LOL one of my favorites
Written by the Late, Great Townes Van Zandt...Now he's my favorite
Ok, I've got the country song for you! And it's a duet!
Whiskey Lulliby by Brad Paisley and Allison Krauss!
BUT, you gotta watch the video as you do the review! This is probably the best mainstream country song to come out in the vast 20 years.
Mario Gillette yes.. We will see 2 grown men cry!
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND mamma tried by merle haggard
One of my favorite Hag songs , i had to move to a big city once and live there for work but i was still a country boy and played this song every day until i moved back to my country roots.
Anytime a Steel Guitar comes in on a country song, its gonna be good! Love that sound.
Do Waylon Jennings “don’t y’all think this outlaw bits done got out of hand”
True story based on him getting busted.
You gotta listen to outlaw country. This song is outlaw country at its core.
Agreed!!
Waylon is my all time favorite. His boy Shooter is pretty damn good too
Classic
Merle Haggard, Mamma Tried.
Nick Pritchett that song man.. shit hits home 😂
Nick Pritchett. YES!!!!
Yeah that would have been a better choice
Fun fact about this song, it was written by Merle’s tour bus driver, who was getting tired of driving to all the “big dirty cities” love the page guys keep it coming!
Loretta Lynn and Willie Nelson, lay me down. This is a great duet, try it out please.
Merle is an O.G. Multiple stretches in prison. He is real country
Dave Gordon “I turned 21 in prison doing life without parole” yeah. You could tell he was a little shit 😂 you gotta love it though
“Outlaw country”
WOW. That was a good song. Im pretty sure this is the first country song that's resonated with me. Thanks for bringing this to my attention
And here's my dose of Techno/Trance! Purity Ring - Begin Again
That thing you recognized at the start is a lap steel guitar. Every genre of music has “standard” licks and chord progressions. The line played is the equivalent of cross string bends you hear in every blues solo.
willramirez75 that is not a lap steel that is norm hamlet playing a double neck 12 string pedal steel....
Mike Wilkerson thanks! I didn’t know there was a difference but after looking up pictures that’s what I had in mind, just called it the wrong name.
I just came across you all's videos today and I can't stop watching you guys are very refreshing. It's good to see some young folk out there getting out of their comfort zone and listening to other types of music and actually giving other types of music a fair Shake. You guys keep it up love it two thumbs up!!!
Listen to Tulsa Time from Don Williams
Oooh yes!!!
I'm currently living on Tulsa time!!! LOL! Great song!!!
Yes, Don Williams the Giant Gentleman!
TOOL "Lateralus" plzzz. Been wanting to see you two react and break it down for so long now.
Fckgogle Pluss ticks and leeches
They reacted to "Forty Six and Two," in case you were looking for other Tool stuff.
The pot or Vicarious would work too ;)
Yes! I second this. Do Lateralus!!
Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb. A live version would be nice
Country isn't my specialty, but "Highwaymen" With Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard & Chis Chistopherson is classic!
If not for a video listen to it on your own time. {their version of "Ghost-riders In The Sky" is cool too}
Thanks guys, you're the only reaction channel I actually watch {mostly for the Metal}! TY!
Lewis Gelan it's not Merle haggard. It's Waylon Jennings.
Lewis Gelan Waylon*
Nice review guys. I haven't heard that song since I was a Country DJ 30 years ago. Thanks for bringing it back. Keep digging. There's great music everywhere.
It's refreshing to see you guys listen to different types of music with an open mind, and take the time to appreciate the perspective of the artist.
The lady singing with him was his wife Bonnie Owens. They divorced and continued to sing together.
Worth mentioning that she was married to Buck Owens too. Thanks for bringing that up, she doesn't get enough credit. She was also the subject of the song "Today I started Loving you again"
Leona Williams
It was actually Leona Williams at this time. Bonnie did come back to sing behind Merle later on.
As a country music fan, I really appreciate you guys honest opinion and giving country music a chance. The Hag was the man!
#Ozzyyears
Haha I respect your taste I prefer dio
Heaven and hell
Or the devil cried
"Islands
In
The
Stream!!!!"
Greatest mind opening classic duet ever!
Trio...?
Reba n B&D.....If u see him/ If you see her.
Mad vocals y'all!
This is a fantastic channel. Positivity.....the world needs it. Thank you.
Merle Haggard is a true Legend in country music!! He was a clown and loved to laugh!! His writing and deep friendships with other country artist is inspirational...young singers, musicians and song writers could learn so much from him IF they chose to...
yall are great!
No offense to Kanye, but Merle made one of the greatest songs of all time.
Johnny paycheck, " take this job and shove it"
"Seven Spanish Angel's " willie Nelson, ray Charles
Do Johnny Cash 'The Man Comes Around'
Next country song y’all should do is Reba McEntire- Fancy. And of course the obligatory Tool- Lateralus. Another great vid fellas!
I think that would be a great song too. Good choice!
Merle Haggard was sitting in prison in California when he decided he become a country singer.
He was actually a singer before going to prison. It was during his time in prison that he realized that he needed to change his life path, and started pursuing music more seriously.
Dale Houston didn't know that
Jacob Hughes He saw Johnny Cash come perform for he and the other inmates.
Well guys. After watching two videos I smashed that subscribe button! It’s so refreshing to see people that can enjoy music across genre, cultural and generational lines. I love all types of music. And it’s great to not feel alone in that anymore! You guys are class acts. Thanks for the videos. Keep up the good work.
I don't know what I expected when I clicked on this video, but I certainly didn't expect you guys to be so entertaining and insightful. Subscribing.
Now that you've tapped into Merle Haggard, you need to try out David Allen Coe. You never even call me by my name, aka, The Greatest Country and Western Song!!!! Up vote this shit!!
That’s a great choice
The perfect country song
Please don’t dig too far into Coe lol
Yeah, David Allan Coe has a few racist songs, so I surely would not dig too far lol....however, they were on a comedy album he did and he had a black drummer in his band for years. But it's still really fucked up and wrong, regardless. There's also a lot of super ignorant racist stuff out there attributed to him that are mislabeled as him that are actually Johnny Rebel songs...because of the one or two racist songs that DAC did on his joke album, a lot of people think Johnny Rebel's stuff is DAC too and it's not.
Deege Dunford Yeah, I should have prefaced not to dig too far, but that's the one diamond in the rough that they need to listen to.
Country for me is good if you're out in the open air of well, The country. It all depends on the environment. But I enjoy Americana or even traditional. Bluegrass is good as well. I really can't get into modern country though as it boors the living madness out of me.
Mattison Leaf good music is good music no matter where you're at
Nothin beats that steel guitar
I'm a big fan of old country music and i enjoy both of your takes on the ones you do!!
Merle Haggard is the King when it comes to country music! He is known as the poet of the common man. Looove me some Merle!
Working Man Blues should be next for Merle.
You should react to Deeper Than the Holler by Randy Travis
Loving the country!💜
I really enjoy watching your videos - how you listen and really seem to enjoy the different kinds of music. I also enjoy your analysis of each song - you put a lot of thought into it. Keep up the good work.
I’ve introduced my grand children to old music and they love it all.I have a large vinyl collection.
I want one of them to take it and love it someday .because it’s priceless in it true state. They tripped when I explained white noise and 45s blew them away.
