I believe part of the reason mayors support Māori wards because it helps strengthen relationships with local iwi. This is crucial for councils due to the significant role iwi play in the planning process. For example, obtaining a discharge consent for your wastewater treatment plant upgrades becomes much more challenging without iwi support. Of course, this depends on the planning rules in place. However, many of these rules are structured to make the pathway easier and with iwi support. Providing incentive to get that support.

I've always said that the biggest problem Maori have is it's own self appointed leadership.! This leadership need it's own people to fail so they can justify THEIR own existence, Te pati Maori is just the latest example of this.
