Day In My Life As a Painter & Decorator

- In this video, you'll get a glimpse into my life as a painter and decorator as I show you the process of sanding, painting, and taping a room.
First things first, I moved all the furniture from the room, to give me space to work. To get the windowsills and skirting boards ready for painting, I used sandpaper to sand down any bumps and rough patches. This step is crucial to ensure the new paint adheres smoothly to the walls. Usually we would use a dustless sander.
Next, I applied ames tape to the edges of the walls, ensuring that I got straight and clean lines. Once the tape was in place, it was time to start painting. I chose a white trade contract matt paint and used a roller to apply the paint to the walls. I allowed the first coat to dry before applying a second
coat for a more even finish.
Some door frames required some filing you will see this process and a wee trade secret!
Overall, it was a satisfying day of work as a painter and decorator. I hope you enjoyed following along and learning about the process. If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to leave them below!

Love how you understand that everyone has different ways of doing things
Hi
Yo whats good
my dads a decorator and i got bored and searched decorating on yt, good video keep it up
Great video mate
Arrowworthy best brushes by far
Nice work 👍
nice stuff Reece been at the game 40 years myself sometimes its a battle working for yourself eh but rewarding at the same time
Whys it a battle?
@@BiGAAAAAAAAAALLLLL deadlines to keep , costing, clients who are arseholes the list is endless
can u make a decent wage? I work in an office but hate it mate@@cannonfodder6654
Nice vid mate , i will say pure bristle works far better than synthetics in oil based paint though, Corona do superb pure bristle brushes . Had Arroworthys before and they are decent but i prefer Monarch nowadays for my synthetics. Staalmeesters are brilliant brushes for water based paints on trim as well. Best to use a tack cloth on the cills as well to get remaining dust particles off . Keep up the good work 👍
How strange i looked up painting and decorating and came across your video and thought no way you sound so local! North of ness here too 😂
Your right mate!👋🏻
Wow😂 looking at his brush..
I would like to see more videos from you.
More soon👊🏻
I studied automotive painting, could you share some tip to get the first job in residential painting? Thanks
Great watch! I’d like some tips if you have any, I’m looking to get in to this trade but being 30 I can’t afford to take an apprenticeship and seemingly there is a lack of viable part time courses for painting and decorating, considering the work force shortage it’s crazy. What’s your advice on getting started?
Hey mate👋🏻
You could do a fast track apprenticeship if the colleges still do them nowadays you’d need to ask your local college also I think if your over 23 years old you would get £9.50 as a starting rate
Do you add pva in every bit of filler you make up? Interesting video 👍
I only add PVA if I’m putting filler onto surfaces that’s has emulsion on it so it won’t crack or fall off
For emulsion I'm going to use on walls as final coat can I mix 50% of it with 50 of water as a mist coat for new plaster or I have to buy a ready mixed mist coat?
Buy a trade emulsion such as Armstead contract matt or Dulux Supermatt and on the back it should tell you how much water to mix in with the paint
2:17 use butter it helps remove oil paint when wet painter and decorator myself learned it from a 78 year painter
I have a friend that got in to painting having no experience otherwise, he tagged along with a pal and now does it full time. What's the chances of me doing the same thing?
It’s totally up to you. Personally I would find a firm or a sole trader that’s willing to take you on and put you though college for qualifications like what I’m doing with my apprentice
You tape your ferrule? Wow I never considered that
What i don’t understand with the next gen painters, is why are you lot using an undercoat with oil eggshell/satin?
If you’re looking for a decent acrylic woodwork finish, invest in some decent materials. I’ve used them all, but i always find myself going back to Helmi In conjunction with haftprimer
I don't think some understand what self Undercoating means when it comes to oil eggshell or satin wood.
Please wat are some of the college schools that they do painting and decorating in U.S.A
I’d treat yourself to a decent dust brush…Purdy maybe and chuck the one you got in the bin 👍
Never used pva when filling. Never had any comebacks
What arroworthy brush are you using. What's the difference between using a angle brush and a normal brush. What oil based undercoat and satinwood did you use.
I normally use arroworthy oval angled either 1, 1.5 or 2 inch for most things as I find the paint goes a lot further with the angled arroworthy’s but it’s all personal preference
I’ve switched to zinsser allcoat water based for my woodwork
@@reecereidpaintingdecorating Where do you get the 1"arroworthy brush from
@@internetaccount4879 Hey mate, your closest Dulux decorating centre or Crown decorating centre should stock them if not order online 👍🏻
@@reecereidpaintingdecorating you want to switch to bedec msp its better more durable got more acrylic in it for same price and goes about 5m2 more per litre but does take a bit longer to dry
I whouldnt put them brushes to clean the floor....
what gloves do you use in this video?
What grit of sand paper do you use, and what name of the sand paper is it?
Also may you tell me the name of the paint brushes you use as well?
It depends what your sanding do you have an example?
The paint brush is an arroworthy angled brush
Under the window need calking 🤣
Finish is a bit poor no caulking lots of gaps brush marks ect ..shoddy lines
😂😂
Why did you tape in that corner after you had sanded the patching and painted? Why not the other way around? Seems like double the work.
Also, how come you use tape on the first baseboard but not the last one, for the floor?
From a fellow painter
My guess its purely for the video, but i also would have taped it before patching and sanding
Over here , painters only paint. Drywall tapers tape.
Your a brave lad 🤣 you'll have every painter in the country criticising you
Oil based paint on inside work big no no these days goes yellow to fast
A big no no? 😅 personal preference. Both have their places.
What about like schools & hospitals where painting working getting a banging everyday? Up the oil 🤘
@@shanegolden6283 was he working in a school or hospital plus schools always want water based products if possible
Since this video I’ve switched to mostly using water based zinsser allcoat. It’s a personal preference but I find the self undercoating of the allcoat is a time saver not just for me but for my clients but oil base paints do have a place too at times
@@reecereidpaintingdecorating yer m8 100 percent i use the johnstone aqua saves loads of time when it come to exterior work oil based all the day for woodwork
no it isn't ive used dulux trade gloss and armstead gloss on loads of interiors and its still white 3 years on may have gone off slightly but not that you can tell
ive been cleaning my hands in white spirit for 20 years nearly everyday my hands are still haven't fallen off yet i find a lot people when their cutting they go straight to the line instead of working it in. lost a tenner on this job mate with all the tape
Worst thing you can do white spirit clean ya hands ,
I hope some day could work in UK 🙏🏽
I am from india can i join your group i am painter
that is a tiny brush.
It’s average and has a nice personality
that brush must weigh a ton
It might have been a good brush but you don’t know how to look after it. If I had let my brushes get into that state when I was an apprentice, back in the 60’s I would have had my butt kicked by my boss. We never used masking tape on the bottom of skirting boards…we had to cut in properly.
Aagh the burning of paint kettles and cleaning brushes...happy days
You're a great decorator, but why use masking tape? Just cut in.
If you can piss, you can paint
Bahahahaha, 10 seconds in and one look a that brush and out, but something tells me I should stay just for the comedy factor…..dude, buy a new brush, they are just $20
Instead off doing a course just watch it on UA-cam
@drewreynolds1649 There's a lot more than that, that goes into painting and decorating 😂but if you're just trying to renovate your house then this tip would suit you...
As a professional decorator with 20 years experience, this tutorial contains so many faults. No sheets especially over the sink. your creating dust that is not being removed, your finish is terrible. And sort that brush out! you will get bits off that brush that will drag through the paint. Little tip for you- don’t use the same brush on your window boards and frames that you have used on the skirting boards. Terrible mate 😂
I would be ashamed if my brush looked in that state….
That brush is 8 years old and he can work it like I real painter
