They we're buddy buddy that night, I don't think this story is over. Mike wanted a name in the retro gaming industry - well, achievement unlocked.

No, his parents bought him a fair amount of awesome atari stuff when he was a kid. I'm a big RGR fan, and it's so disappointing to find out this once great personality has let bad decisions, high ambitions, and greed get the better of him sending him in a downward spiral. It's hard not to be mad or felt led on by this though.
My favorite part was when he posted images of the checks he wrote to Sean Robinson, was immediately called out because the check was dated AFTER the capture card prototype was discovered to be fake, and then just as quickly deleted the images. After somebody posted the screen capped image, Mike reposted the images and claimed that--in that hour--he was hacked by Sean who had deleted them... Unbelievable. Never mind all the other holes in his story. Not only is he a horrible businessman, he's a horrible con-man.

To add benefit of doubt, the Beatles famously befriended a man they dubbed "magic" Alex Mardas who after showing John and Paul little electronic trinkets got asked to build them a fantastic future studio in the basement of Apple record headquarters. They showed up ready to record what became "Let it Be" and realized the guy had done NOTHING to LITTLE and knew practically NOTHING about electronics. Goes to show even some of the brightest artist minds can be swayed into false trust. Though this particular mess I think he should've been more diligent looking into what he was contracting someone to make for him to present to the public. Because ultimately it's Mike Kennedy's reputation on the line

Mike spent the month after the capture card bullshit to think of a way he can save face and make it seem like he is a victim. Which he isn't.
It's ridiculous, I work in this industry too, there is no way you would get to a fully laid out PCB prototype without a single test been done before. They knew what they were doing.

You should point out how Gamester81 posted on his Tumblr page that his game Sydney Hunter and the Caverns of Death is "running on the new upcoming Coleco Chameleon prototype system. It plays great on it! What I would like to point out is if he didn't know it was a capture card then how did he put in that game card? You can clearly see that game cart was put in there. Did *cough* "Mr. Lee" install a pin connector on the video capture card? Even if he did that means that Mike got the "Prototype"and didn't even power it on to see if worked because I'm sure the magical "Mr. Lee" did mod a video capture card to play SNES games. Am I to believe that Mike didn't test his "Prototype" before showing it off to the public? My BS alarm is going off. All I'm saying is in the picture they have a game cart in there and I can guarantee that game wouldn't have run if Mike ever checked it.

Their are two prototypes.
The one at the toy fair was likely a SNES Mini in a Jag shell.
The second one which they were trying to kick start with, was the capture card.
Mike is claiming he was given the pictures of the capture card one from Lee. I don't believe he claimed to have gotten that prototype.

+M. SKWAWKS the earliest CU podcasts i found were shot behind 1 camera, and they looked awkward & shitty. the 2 camera angles lets them direct what they need to say towards the camera, but the old videos they faced away from the camera. You could barely see their faces!
I've personally been ripped off by Sean Robinson, and I know more than 10 guys in the Portland area that have been as well. We are talking about a very convincing con-man that always knows the right thing to say. Mike may have been deceived, but so was I and so were a bunch of my friends - Good, caring, SMART people. Mike may be overly trusting, but he cares about the retro community. That doesn't make him a bad person. Blaming him for being conned is like blaming a bank for being robbed.

I've stumbled over an interview with John Carlsen (retrogamingmagazine.com/2016/03/07/john-carlsen-interview-his-career-and-the-retro-vgs/). It seems that it is FPGA bit that made the project unfeasible.
Carlsen envisioned the thing to be Retron 5, only with emulators hardcoded into the firmware, not on top of Android. Could have worked. Does not need FPGA.
+Volo yeah I saw something about the fpga, apparently the snes alone has taken other people over a decade of work, so how they expected to deliver the same thing in months is anyone's guess!
aKunacme Actually it is quite possible, but rather unnesesary.
Consider utilisation of FPGA to be hardware emulation (actually it IS emulation, not recreation of hardware).
RetroVGS (if there was such a thing) was supposed to be a "hybrid system" - FPGA supplemented by ARM processor. One could have used FPGA for "core" functions, like controller input, interaction with cartridges and putting out graphics. Other functions, like sound, managing RAM and some calculations, could have been offloaded to conventional ARM CPU.
The issue that entry-level ARM chip can handle SNES emulation perfectly well, especially if such emulation is coded in Assembly. Integrating FPGA would be more of a hurdle than benefit.

As an avid crowdfunder it blows my mind how video game based projects keep going to hell. I usually fund tabletop gaming projects and those are rock solid in confidence compared to this kind of thing. It's not just a difficulty of hardware either as many successful technology projects have flourished and delivered. It certainly makes me scrutinize a project much deeper when its of this genre.
Not wanting Kevtris is a red flag. Either your not knowledgeable about your field, or planning a scam.
there has been many consoles created without kevtris' input which were successful and not scams. we dont know why kevtris didn't contribute. perhaps it was for a legit reason (too expensive or couldn't commit to the desired timeline, etc..)

If he (Mike) wants to come out of this with his reputation somewhat intact, he ought to just start some kind of retro-style game studio and release stuff on Steam. Cartridge gaming has been gone for a long time, and what remains is the niche homebrew market. That saves him from these embarrassing missteps, and still keeps his dream of retro games going.
He needs to go away. No one in the gaming industry will (or should) throw money at anything he's involved in.

Whether Sean Robinson was involved or not; after the AtariAge post shit hit the fan in Portland Retro Gamers about the guy. He apparently scammed thousands of dollars from several very respected members and a game store owner maybe in various instances, mostly hardware related. A lot of people claim he's an insanely good, sociopathic, con man.
