- Utkatasana means “horrible pose” and this pose can feel horrible-unless you coil around the apanic energy in the lower body, and then unspool the posture from there.
The most important thing is to reach skyward without losing connection to the earth. And that connection is easily lost, for instance, if you Lift the arms by arching the spine. Then you will feel too much tension in the lower back, and a sense of shakiness down through the feet.
If you know the feeling, try hollowing the pelvis and rounding the spine, then uncoiling slowly from the lowest part of the spine to the highest. This will help lift the support of the earth up through the pelvis to the heart, and integrating the energies of those two vital centers (the prana and apana) at the same time.
Once you arrive, allow the pubic bones to drop toward the coccyx, and feel the hollowness in the lap, even as the pelvis tilts naturally forward (in response to the raising of the arms). Feel a balance of dropping and reaching, and allow that balance to be the touchstone of your alignment.
