1 year ago, I began my second attempt at game development and started learning Unity. This is a quick recap of my progress learning unity game development.
I had heard about ‘game engines’ like Unity and Unreal before, but honestly didn’t understand what they did or even how to use them. The first time I opened Unity 1 year ago, I had no idea what to do. I spent my first 2 months learning from UA-cam video tutorials on Unity Game Development and C#.
Although progress was slow at first, I eventually had a working prototype in Unity with character customization, procedurally generated worlds, day/night cycles, branching dialogues with NPCs, buildings, and usable items from loot drops.
After realizing my C# code was a mess, I decided to scrap the original Unity project for my game and rebuild everything from scratch. Up until this point, I avoided 3D game development because of how hard stuff like 3D modeling, character rigging, game physics, and 3D lighting are to learn in Unity. 2D is where I was first introduced to video games as a kid, but many of my best memories come from 3D games like Minecraft, World of Warcraft, and Elder Scrolls games. I’m a huge fan of games that offer random discoveries in an open-world environment. Although the 2D game I made in Unity was based around this idea, I couldn’t shake the thought of how my game Revna would look and feel in 3D.
After nearly 3 months of learning how to bake lights, rig character models, and use physics in Unity to calculate all kinds of things in a 3D world, I finally felt like I was making progress.
For now, I’m working with free assets in the Unity Asset store to get a strong understanding of how to handle 3D models once they’re in Unity. Moving forward, my plan is to recreate the current prototype of the game I made, Revna, from a 2D game into a 3D game.

If you want to learn Unity, check out my new beginner tutorials - ua-cam.com/video/b-adaUn3DhI/v-deo.html
I love watching these game dev recaps of what someone learnt. I'm planning on making one soon as I'm almost in 1 year of gamedev too.
Hey thanks for watching! And that’s awesome, which game engine are you using?
@@tutmo I've used both unity and unreal, mostly unity though. Just made my first multiplayer game yesterday and jesus it has so many bugs I never saw until other people played it😅
Haha, that’s awesome! I’ve only ever used Unity, but I hear mostly good things about Unreal. I just don’t feel like learning C++. That’s really cool about your multiplayer game though! Did you setup the networking stuff yourself or use a plug-in like Mirror?
keep up the great work man!
Thank you!
Hey! That’s awesome and very inspiring:) keep it up!
Thanks so much! And thank you for watching (:
Nice to see a new video!
Hey, thanks! Glad you enjoyed it 😃
Even i like open world games. Dude you just ignited my spark. Thank you
Wow! Dude I watched this whole thing thinking there would be 100k views. Trying to learn Unity 2D on my own and I am also inspired by Eric Barone. Good luck yo!
Hey, thanks so much! MisterTaftCreates has an awesome Zelda-like 2D RPG series if you’re looking for any good Unity 2D tutorials on UA-cam. Thanks again for watching, and good luck to you too!
Amazing inspiration! This is going to inspire me to start :)
That’s really awesome to hear! Glad this helped inspire you 🙂
really inspiring! great job!
Thank you! :)
Amazing! I'm glad to find your channel. My case is very similar to yours. I'm about to start. The first will be Unity, C + and Blender. I already subscribed :)
Thanks! I wish you the best of luck on your game dev journey. 🙂
My programing experience and interst lines up really well with this. Im more pumped than ever to get into c# and unity ^_^
That’s awesome! I’m coming up on 3 years since getting into gamedev and still loving it :) Good luck on your journey!
@@tutmo thank you!
I Love it to watch small Channels, Hope you will get famous once
Glad you found my channel, thanks for watching! 😊
i began 3 months ago and have a really really good game already.
Can't wait to see more
Hey, thanks! Can’t wait to make more :)
Great video, I’ve just started my journey in game development. Our stories are pretty similar in terms of our thoughts on leaving it to the pros, but I think we could all be pros if we love the craft and our in the time.
Hey, that’s awesome! And yeah I agree with you, passion can go far in time. I’ve also played a few AAA titles from the “pros” that were worse than some game jam games.
I think we have all had that experience with the “AAA” games these days 😂. I don’t have huge aspirations to make the best title ever, just to make some of my ideas become a real experience. Keep up the grind on UA-cam and your game development. You don’t know all of us but we are proud of you 😃
Haha, very true about some AAA games lately! And smart for you to start with smaller ideas. Every experienced indie dev says to start small, but I went wild on a huge dream game 2 months after my first Unity tutorial (basically the time leading up to this video) and crashed hard 😂. Really appreciate the kind words! Haven’t uploaded as much lately b/c I’m finally working on a bigger game again, but glad to hear when my older vids help encourage people to make their own games 😊
Awesome progress, I feel the struggle, learned from tutorials myself. For 3D modelling and rigging I would highly recommend you find/buy models and rig and animate them in Mixamo it will save you a lot of time.
Thank you! I’ve heard about Mixamo. Is it specifically for rigging and animations? My wife is getting pretty good at making 3D models in Blender, but rigging and animation is still very difficult.
@@tutmo Mixamo allows you to take a 3D humanoid model, throw it on their website and download the rigged model. Plus they also offer literally thousands of animations for your rigged model. Literally a gamechanger for me because I make hypercasual games quickly for my clients and my modelling, rigging and animating skills are crap :D
Wow, that sounds awesome! I’ll definitely check it out. Thanks for the recommendation. Rigging and animation have been the most frustrating parts of working in 3D, by far. 😔
that's great work
Thank you! That’s very kind 🙂
Hey dude, really inspired by your journey….
Probably you are not gonna see this, but in case you do, it would have been really helpful if ya could share the UA-cam tutorials you watched for getting to this stage :)
Thanks
Adithya
Hey! Really happy to hear this helped inspire you. Are you looking more into doing 3D or 2D? I recorded this when I was mainly doing 2D, and for that I highly recommend MisterTaftCreates. His Zelda series taught me a ton about Unity in general. Brackeys is great for 3D, but unfortunately he stopped doing tutorials and some of his stuff is getting a bit dated. His basic stuff is mostly still relevant though. Another fantastic channel for 3D is TheKiwiCoder. Some of his stuff is a bit more advanced, but he does a great job at breaking things down and explaining why he is doing something. Either way, good luck on your game dev journey! And thanks for watching :)
"I abandoned my dreams of ever making a calculator" LOL
Folder to be deleted for video got me laughing my hat off😂
Same, I thought stardew Valley was a HUGE inspiration
good
What was the hardest thing for you to learn? 🤔
For me it was the hardest things are good lighting, level design and assets which are consistent.
Yeah, lighting alone is so difficult. I used to be into Photography, so I have a decent understand of the importance of lighting. But making it work well in a game is a whole new level of hard.
@@tutmo i am currently struggling i cant find any good tutorials that could help can u recommend me lighting tutorials that helped you
Hey! So sorry for the delayed response. Honestly, I'm still not that great with real-time lighting. When it comes to baked lighting, I learned the most from these 2 Brackeys tutorials:
Basics: ua-cam.com/video/VnG2gOKV9dw/v-deo.html
Using Probes: ua-cam.com/video/_E0JXOZDTKA/v-deo.html
Hope that helps!
@@tutmo thx alot man
When's your new video coming?
Hey, thanks for your interest! Hopefully in the next week or 2. Finishing up a video about my first 3D game that I plan to release for free.
@@tutmo awesome! Can't wait 😁
Hey! If you didn’t already check it out, I did finally release the game and uploaded a new video about it: ua-cam.com/video/chmOaOF1RM4/v-deo.html
@@tutmo thanks! I'm watching it now!
Awesome! Hope you enjoy it 😀
sorry for the question, but how old are you? I feeling like every year that passes is more late to learn unity
Hey! I’m 32 now and got into gamedev when I was 29. There’s definitely a bunch of very talented, younger gamedevs out there, so I get where you’re coming from. But if you want to learn Unity (or anything), that’s really all that matters. Never too late to get started :)
i am trying to learn unity 2d
That’s awesome! Good luck in your game dev journey 😊
@@tutmo thank you
Rotating guy whos Job is to cut trees: "BE the hatchet"
Haha, yeah that was a fun bug :)
@@tutmo I would never patch that out
Would you release on Android?
I haven't made a mobile game yet, but if I ever do then yeah I'd release on Android.
is making games soo hard .???
Depends :) I think some people pick up coding faster than others. But, there are also tools you can use to easily make a game with no code at all.
@@tutmo thank you :0
No problem!
Bro how. Fcking lucky are you . Where can I find a wife like yours xd
Very lucky, haha
You dont deserve 500 subs, you deserve 500,000
Haha, thank you!
Mmmm. You should get back into gamedev.
But just make a game that hasn't already been made before. The world has Stardew Valley already. Are you really going to make a better version of Stardew Valley?
It would be cool to just try some quick games first.
