  • I found cycling through buying the WattBike Atom and subscribing to Zwift about 2.5 years ago. But because of this I'm always keen to improve my bike handling skills outdoors. So following the operation to remove my appendix, I decided to confront one of my demons - learning how to ride the rollers, which I hope will improve my general bike handling and fitness!
    I'm naturally a little clumsy, so this was a big challenge for me - and in today's vlog I document the process of learning how to cycle on rollers from ride 1 through my first attempt to ride 1 hour consecutive without stopping. I share tips for things I found useful, and also some of the little crashes along the way !
    I also provide a review on the excellent Elite Arion Mag Rollers (£300)

    Loved this Phill. I spent my first whole month or more on Zwift with Elite rollers and power meter pedals. I was a bit more reckless than you, doing so in the middle of a room but not being skilled enough to wipe my brow or drink became a frustration, as was mounting and dismounting, the sheer concentration, plus a random fall after a whole month when I forgot I was on rollers and wiped my brow. I bought a direct drive trainer to explore sim mode/ERG and have never used them since. But no regrets, very rewarding, and the big thing was that they got me into Zwift, so I thank them profusely.

    Well done! That brings back memories of riding my rollers for winter training and club time trials during the 80s. It was always hard, but necessary to get out of the saddle now and again, and though I got comfortable enough to be able to actually change jerseys while riding, you could never relax completely or you would find yourself riding along one edge or the other. Even riding outside in blinding sleet was often preferable!
    Much, much better, effective, and focused training on direct drive trainers in my opinion!

      @BikeRacingWithoutMercy  3 роки тому +1

      @@BikeRacingWithoutMercy You did, and are doing extremely well... though I must admit that the bobbles were more than a bit entertaining!
      One thing to really dial in on rollers is making sure that the front roller is directly under your axle. Having it in front or behind makes the steering unstable, exaggerated far more than you would ever get outside.

    Best thing I learned about riding rollers is to not try too hard. The more you "try" to ride rollers the more erratic your steering becomes and the more "swervy" you get. Just stare at a point about 6ft ahead of you and let the bike move to the left and right of the rollers. The flanged edges of the rollers will naturally bring your bike back to a central point if you get too close to the edges.
    The other way I learned is to go warm up on rollers at Lee Valley velodrome before the Full Gas Meets. The desperate need to not look like a prat will keep you upright!

    • @BikeRacingWithoutMercy
      @BikeRacingWithoutMercy  3 роки тому

      Thanks ever so much for the excellent advice - and for sure the more tense I was and the harder I tried the more erratic I became. I’ve got better at looking ahead - and also did 3mins no hands which build confidence and makes relaxing whilst holding the bars a little easier. And for sure - with all the other racers at Lee Valley pre race - the stakes are high - kudos to you ✊ for even giving the roller warm up a go! I’ll not be taking them to the Full Gas / Hog Hill crits when they restart😅

    Welcome to the world of rollers Phil. I do all my indoor training on the same rollers, less ramp testing which I do on the smart trainer for erg mode. For less than €50 I mounted them onto skate wheels with bungee cords front and rear. This allows easy and comfortable out of the saddle riding at high power and cadence without fear of shooting off the front. For long indoor sessions the overall experience is so much more comfortable, more like riding outdoors with all the static stress on the body removed, eventually ;-)

    I bought these rollers about a year ago….tried once and put in the box and packed it away in the garage.
    After getting my wahoo smart trainer which I’m absolutely loving, I pulled these rollers out now to add to my pain cave.
    It just doesn’t feel like my bike fits on it.
    Ive got a specialized sl6….
    Ive got the roller set to the furthest setting now but still doesn’t feel right.
    Any recommendations?

    • @BikeRacingWithoutMercy
      @BikeRacingWithoutMercy  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Aaron - I think you may have the rollers on the wrong length setting. The end of the front fork Gould be roughly over the centre of the front roller. Make sure the band is not rubbing against the plastic also (it can get trapped under one of the plastic fittings). And start off in the architrave. Watch a UA-cam tube set up vid to get perfect - but it does feel very strange for the first 3 rides. I built up from being able to do 2mins without stopping to 20mins - and it took 5 attempts 👍

      I ride a small frame for the Wilier which is roughly a 51-52 - and the front roller axel is in the 8th hole back from the very front. Definitely worth persisting with - I prefer riding the big blocks of 30-60mins at tempo or zone 2 on the rollers vs Zwift 💯

      Hi Natopen - and yes. I think they are a very good training aid from Jan - March to get used to riding the road bike for sustained (29-90min m) tempo efforts and get used to dialing back in the good riding position. They also help with creating a nice smooth pedalling technique plus balance and confidence. I’ll then use them less frequently to over April - June, because the unrelenting pedalling is good for tempo fitness on the larger climbs (if I had any longer climbs available near me I’d use those instead April-June LoL ! )

    Thank you great review and it helped me a lot I'm staying way the hell away from them. I'll just stick with my martial arts to keep my balance hopefully halfway decent till I can get back out on the bike. I'm a road and mountain biker long time racer also back in the day for Trek bicycle corporation. Desperate now so I thought about rollers. I'll just stick with the mag trainer and the elliptical. That said I think it's just incredible that you did this and I think it will help you enormously out on the road and mountain bike if you do that. And mountain biking is just awesome by the way as well as gravel riding.🚵‍♂️

      Thanks ever so much for your really lovely comments and support, Geu 🙏 . Since learning how to use them, I’ve added them back into the winter training each year - because to your point they build balance, confidence and work the muscles slightly differently - and I always feel stronger for using them. And no doubt - the mountain biking makes for the best bike handlers - incredible that you raced at such a high standard for Trek 💪. I don’t have the skills or confidence for that - and similarly I’ve not done much gravel - save the Gran Fondo, Strada Bianche ! Best of luck - and if you change your mind, being in the doorway really does help 👍
