      I have kinetic Z rollers which are very basic, oldschool, rollers with zero special features except for folding up nicely. They're good for recovery rides because the resistance is too limited for real training (they barely reach 250W riding a 52 x 11 at 35-36mph. But I'd take them to a bike race for a race warm up easily because they are light, compact and low resistance / high cadence is what I want anyways. I think these Elites are in between a real smart trainer on one side and simple rollers on the opposite side but not being good at any one of them; too basic, inaccurate, and not powerful enough for fitness building and too bulky, heavy and complicated to take to a race for warmup or cool down.

    I bought and still own this model. One thing I like about it is that it's incredibly fast and easy to connect to Zwift in seconds. I wouldn't recommend if you're riding with aero bars - terrifying. It's also not very accurate so if you're after wattage specific training / intervals I wouldn't recommend it - get a Neo or kickr. Otherwise, great piece of equipment and very well made.

    This is a very good video. I am using the TacX Galaxia rollers, and they are quite good, but not realistic enough. Rollers have a reputation that they don't provide enough resistance, and I agree! I have to decrease my tire pressure to get my wattage up. If I have my tire pressure around 100 psi, I can easily spin at a cadence over 100, and still be around 200 watts, not enough for me. I am strongly considering the Elite Nero smart rollers. Static trainers and exercise bikes are not compelling to me. To be able to create a programmed riding session, certain wattages for certain durations, is very appealing to me.

    Just received the Nero and your assessment is spot on Tariq. I have and will use them for steady endurance rides and for recovery rides that can approximate a power value desired. I also use pedals (p1) for source of power. If you desire a trainer that will give you snappy and accurate power values for intervals etc...then a direct drive is better. I use a Neo for those training sessions. If you like to 'zone out' on rides and just listen to music or tv/netflix then rollers are not for you. If you don't care about power when on rollers, then the Nero is not for you. I am happy to have them both for different reasons.

    Thank you for the video -- there aren't too many reviews or info on them out there. I think Elite can do a better job on this so it's nice you made a good one.
    I've had the Nero since Nov 2019 and I really like it. It's improved my real life bike handling skills. My wife and I both use it but we always use it a doorway to lean on just in case. I started out on basic classic rollers and graduated to the Nero. Really having to focus on your balance with the rollers takes your mind off of riding indoors.
    Like others, at times it had a slight shutter to it then goes away -- not every time but once in a while. In workout mode (ERG?) I feel the delay but it does get up there.
    I don't know about the watts accuracy (don't have a power meter) but my sweat, heart rate, and breathing is real. haha That being said, I definitely would get it again, or another smart roller or similar quality/price.
    It links quickly to zwift too. I am using the companion app and bluetooth.
    One question thou -- when I link to zwift it says "nero 121" and when my wife links to zwift it says "nero 217". Do you know what the numbers mean? Thank you.

    • @SmartBikeTrainers
      @SmartBikeTrainers  4 роки тому

      Do you and your wife use the same Nero? That’s usually the device ID so I would think it should be the same if you are using the same Nero. Unless that’s a zwift ID if you’re using two different accounts.

    Hi Tariq - great review! I've done 1,000 km so far on my Nero rollers and absolutely love them! You definitely need to pay attention - being flat out on the aero bars, then suddenly hitting a steep hill in Zwift can be pretty interesting :). I've upgraded from dumb rollers and find time flies by even faster with them being interactive. I did notice some vibrations now and again. At first, I thought that something might not have been balanced properly - but think it's actually just the elastic bands vibration at certain speeds / frequencies. Also, I initially had some static build up / small shocks - but fixed that by wearing headphones which grounded me, phew!

    • @SmartBikeTrainers
      @SmartBikeTrainers  4 роки тому

      Hmm, what headphones do you wear? I’ve had static issues with every rollers I’ve been on. It gets even worse with carbon wheels. I have to be carful touching anything. The first shock is always the worse 😣
      I also wear headphones all the time but that doesn’t seem to make a difference.

      @@SmartBikeTrainers Just been using some low cost over the ear headphones. I thought the sweat would have killed them by now, but they are still going strong. I hang the cable over some metal blind fixings (to keep it out of the way of the front wheel), so think that might help with the grounding. My kids have been using the rollers too. For them, they wear an anti-static wrist strap (like this www.amazon.co.uk/iMBAPrice-Anti-Static-Adjustable-Grounding-Components/dp/B014CB9TVS) which I've wired into the house's earth circuit. Stops them getting zapped!

    I have a question regarding power accuracy. I don't have a power meter to measure with. What is the margin of error you have noticed? (For instance if you take a 20' FTP test, I can read power data on the my Etraining app.). The rollers do feel like they pose a lot of resistance when I ride so for instance a ride of 215 watts I will barely average a 26.1 km/h (both registered by Wahoo and Elite app), while it felt quite a heavy, against the wind kind of workout. I am communicating with Elite about calibration, but wondering what you experience in terms of margin of error.

    I had my Nero Smart Rollers for 2 day before thy broke.. I had high hopes for these rollers and after my first quick 10km and I thought these had been met! Then on their second use it all went wrong. My son, who is 35kg with 8kg road bike, was half way through an 8km ride when they started to make a lot of noise. I was supervising, as they are rollers, so we stopped. Only to find the plastic base unit had a large crack and they were effectively unusable
    I am now in “Warranty Hell” with Rutland Cycle with no idea whether I will get a replacement or repair, and when I can expect this to happen, perhaps as long as 28 day. So 2 days old and 13km of use

    Old video but I’ve a question:
    Did you try these rollers with your bike power meter as the source in TrainerRoad and the Nero as the controllable?
    Does that work well with these rollers? It seemed like a good setup for the InsideRide and TruTrainer you reviewed.
    Thanks in advance.

    • @SmartBikeTrainers
      @SmartBikeTrainers  Рік тому +1

      No I didn’t try it that way. I paired my power meter to the Nero directly.

    • @SmartBikeTrainers
      @SmartBikeTrainers  Рік тому +1

      InsideRide has a similar setup where you pair your power meter to the Smart Control unit and it works best that way. TruTrainer doesn’t have that functionality so I settled to using power match with trainer road.

    • @david.vandergoes
      @david.vandergoes Рік тому

      @@SmartBikeTrainers Thanks for the quick reply and the information.
      The power match to TruTrainer looked pretty good - mostly.
      I want to switch to rollers for most of my indoor training - Z2, Sweet Spot, Threshold but not short high output intervals. I have Kreitler Rollers and have no issues with riding rollers. My current trainer bike has crankarm based power meter and it matches my KICKR almost perfectly - recorded separately to two different computers - so I know my power numbers from the crank are pretty good, at least consistent with my training plans so I am in the correct zones or whatever.
      There seem to be three choices for me: Nero, InsideRide, and Trutrainer. All three seem like they would be fine for ERG mode work given my low FTP. But I would like to think I can free ride in Zwift and just cruise around.
      - TruTrainer overheating on a climb is *super* disappointing. I am not as strong as you so I would be going even slower so that overheating problem seems to be a dealbreaker.
      - Nero seems to have some weird power inaccuracies and lags but maybe it would be better if TR or Zwift are doing the communication between by power meter and the resistance in the rollers. But I cannot find anyone who has done a review set up that way.
      - InsideRide seems pretty good but the setup looks like it does a lot of babysitting - rollers should be 100% focused experience - so that makes me nervous that I won't develop the small balance muscles (and neurological responses) and maybe reduced saddle discomfort (anything seems better than the hard fixed saddle of a direct-drive trainer) that I hope for switching from KICKR to rollers.
      Thanks in advance for any further information.

      I’m in the same boat as well. Which trainer did you end up going with?

    • @david.vandergoes
      @david.vandergoes 11 місяців тому

      @@dustinelliott5415 Hi. I decided to use Kreitler rollers with a Headwind to solve another problem:
      The maximum wheelbase of all of these smart rollers is much too short for me - or anyone who wants to use an XL gravel bike, any modern XC MTB, some XL endurance road bikes, etc. One of things I wanted was an easy swap between bikes for indoor training rides. Nope.
      The benefit of rollers was greatly diminished if I could only use one bike - my road bike - on them. At that point, me being lazy and never switching my road bike off my direct drive trainer is essentially the same experience. I can’t use these rollers to warm up or cool down at events - except road bike events - and so on and so on.
      Major downside of Kreitler:
      Can’t change the fan (difficulty) while riding. So matching the power exactly to a workout profile is trickier than if I had smart rollers.
      Good luck.

    Excellent review once again. Thanks so much for sharing your experience. After watching this video I decided to give it a try with the elite nero. I'm a newbie with rollers so I definitely had a hard time keeping my balance and stand in the middle of the rollers at first. It seems that the parabolic shapes on the rollers weren't enough for me. :) The tires just ripped both plastic edges. I still have to add electric tape on both sides regulary. In another video ("inside Ride" rollers), I've noticed those two little wheels on the sides to push the front wheel back in the middle. I wish I had those. Even now I tend to follow my avatar sideways on zwift. I'm thinking about building a custom wood frame (kind of a treadmill ramp) that will limit my sideways movements (and falls) and allowing me to lean on it once in a while. :) Do you have any suggestions for me about that (product or plan).
    I'd also like to hear from you Tarik about the Kickr E-Flex from inside ride. It's cheaper and smaller than the rockr plate, it seems be a good complement for my wahoo kickr. Is it worth it you think ?
