Most people know about cyling turbo trainers, and pick them as their go to indoor cycling workout tool. However in my opinion rollers offer a great experience, increase cycling efficiency and keep things more interesting.
I am a triathlete so cycling efficiency is the name of the game. Cycling rollers help me to achieve a better efficiency that translates directly to road cycling.
I use Elite arion parabolic rollers and will review this product soon.

Thanks for covering the point about having a smooth pedal stroke to keep the balance. That probably is the biggest difference between rollers vs trainers. Cheers !

Rollers have always appealed to me. I dread my static trainer even though it's very nice. Cheers!

twocupsoftee They definitely keep things more interesting than the turbo. They're also less of a hassle to set up.

I use a Tacx Rollertrack with completely cylindrical rollers. That makes it slightly more difficult to stay on the bike, but it works quite well. Mostly I do between 35 and 40 km/h for about 45 mins on it, sometimes short sprints up to 55-60km/h. Perhaps not the most reasonable form of training, but I'm lacking a bit of patience to stay on the rollers for much longer. I've always wanted to reach the 100km limit, but that would mean almost 3 hours of quite boring work. Nevertheless, during wintertime rollers are a decent possibility to keep up most of the stamina...

A point he missed out here is that if you use a turbo trainer you will need a training tyre specific for it, so unless you can be bothered to change tyre all the time, you will need a space wheel and cassettes. An other point is that it is incorrectly publicised that turbo trainers offer realistic resistance (alike to road). If you are training you need to watch power or heart rate, so gears and some indication of your effort are all you need. Adjust gears to power/heart rate outputs. Turbo trainers are poor for natural riding as Steve rightly explains

Paul Liptrott good point. I burnt through a couple of decent road tyres for that exact reason. Rollers are so much more convenient than turbo's, but both do have their place...
