We've been hard at work behind the scenes refining our look and composition, and I wanted to share a bit of work we've done, and get feedback from you, stewvians! Please let me know what you think!
Thanks so much guys for everything, and for staying on this journey with us all these years. I’m getting a bit of feedback saying things about the new look of the characters, and how it doesn’t feel like family guy with the new looks... but guys, that’s kind of the point. We’re getting away from family guy art style and format as much as possible, and trying to do our own thing. This is so we can tell the stories in bigger scale and more and more epic than we could with 2 dimensional characters.. and speed production values. This entire scene was created in a week, from start to finish... so this is the route we have to take. I am open to feedback on how we can move forward and make it look better, but going backwards is really out of the question. But still, please speak your mind, I am honing things in a bit (as much as I can) with your feedback, and value every single comment!!
I definitely appreciate the intent; you guys wanna do your own thing. And ultimately as a viewer excited for the continuation of the series I'll respect whatever decision you come to. Personally though? I feel like the Family Guy resemblance is the whole point. It's Doctor STEW. That's what makes it cool- it's a creative cross between Who and Family Guy.
TL as a whole, we departed family guy and stewie in 2012 when fox tried to sue us. It hasn’t been family guy in a long time. Maybe that will scare off some viewers, but I know whovians, and whovians will love our story.
The only critisim I can give as a fellow animate is ease the legs of the walk cycles as the characters come to a stop. It looks a bit odd to see the character slowly stop when they get to the point they need and to still see the legs are carrying on the same speed and momentum as they entered the room. I hope that helps but otherwise fantastic work. Are you animating this on Maya?
The models and scenes and everything are better in the second, though I much prefer the 2D characters. I think it COULD work in purely 3D if you ditched the whole "family guy inspired" style and went with more originally- designed characters, cause it really doesn't work in 3D imo. Then again, it wouldn't really be Dr. Stew then, would it?
God Super in your opinion, what is it about the first one that makes it more magical? Maybe it’s something I can apply in the future to the new stuff? Let me know! Thanks!
I think the 3D version is missing some of the small details that were important in the 2D. The biggest I see is the lack of bokeh in the 3D. In my opinion, the bokeh really made it look nice. I think the black outline also looks strange on the 3D model and makes the character look more blocky, if that makes sense? I do prefer the 2D better at the moment, but I think the 3D has the potential to surpass it. Keep up the awesome work! You're an incredible artist and I can't wait for more videos!
luckeygirl93 I took this into consideration, and adjusted the outline so it’s still there, but very not pronounced. I think you’ll be pleased. As for the bokeh, could you try to elaborate more for me? Are you referring to the one shot in particular where the bg was blurred, and the toys were in the foreground?
luckeygirl93 ahh! That’s easy enough. I was going to leave that out of this version, but I’ll give it a try when she’s walking to the TARDIS. Thanks for the suggestions!
I went ahead and added a depth of field pass over this scene, and toned down the outer outline based on your recommendations, and wow - it looks so much better, even with a very subtle blur for things not quite in focus... which is weird, since it’s still a cartoon, I didn’t think it would have such a dramatic effect on it, but it did. I think the blur allows the viewer to focus on the character as the center of the shot too, subconsciously. I took some other things into consideration, and added a lot more vibrancy and exposure to the shots, and it really comes out nice. This is all down to the learning curve; because I have no formal training with video or editing, I’m “playing by ear” so feedback that impacts like yours did is very useful. I appreciate all the feedback of course, but something as directed at the general look and feel made a tremendous impact on the final product. Not an animator, so not entirely sure how to convey this. I do prefer the new style over the old one, I think the only thing missing from it is more outlines or something like that. Like having the eyes and clothes outlined may make it look cleaner. The closest thing I can compare it to is like having the Borderlands art style minus the outlining on the inside of the characters, it makes the characters and some objects look slightly off, if that even makes any sense at all. Keep up the good work!
It looks like Family Guy a little but I can't think of anything that just looks a little bit like Family Guy read after doctor Stewie generated he looks just like Stewie
@@Doctorstew the characters look a bit stilted and the family guy styling seems lost on 3d models that's my opinion at least there are probably many other stewvians who like the change
UngodlyPower208 awesome feedback mate, I get what you mean. The transition from 2d to 3D art style does have implications on how I’ll have to animate going forward, and it is a very dramatic change.
I think the buildings like big ben the tardis etc look better in the new style with a few exceptions like the tardis transition from benthenys hand into space i think it would look good if you had 3d buildings but had 2D characters but the new 3d characters look cheap and ugly

I wish I could go back and watch the old Doctor Stew as well. Sucks work stopped on this but it's understandable. Life hits hard.

@@Doctorstew yes, the background blur! Anytime you zoom in on a person or object, it just looks nicer when the background falls out of focus. 😊

Yes the 2d Is Better, the animations in the 3d version need improved, i think you should make the backround 3d and keep the characters 2d

I wish the movement animations were more polished and taken care off. It just looks...off to me.
The Vortex one animator, designer, Rigger, interior designer, editor... it’s too much man.
