I loved Faygo red pop. I'd buy a bottle of it with my allowance every Friday night when I was ten years old. This makes me remember Bill Kennedy at the movies, Rita Bell and the Prize movie, and The Ghoul.
***** I was appalled by that comment. I actually did not approve it and it's not appearing here for me. How did you see it? I was trying to avoid ANYone having to see that awfulness. Did it come directly to you since it was a response to your comment?
Not from Detroit, from good old Flint, but this song just jumped into my head as I was washing dishes here in Delaware where I've lived for many many years. Made me cry remembering the fun kids had back then, before electronics and social media stole their sense of imagination. Thanks for posting...and I remembered every word!!
Back in February Garrison Keillor did an episode of his "Prairie Home Companion" show from the Fox Theatre in Detroit. At one point in the show he led the audience in a round of this song. You've never heard it sung by so many people with tears in their eyes.
Loved that song when it first came out and I still do. It was one to have you feeling good whenever you heard it. It truly was a great song and Guidersleeve was a very special man as he made you want to join in and sing the "Faygo Song". Truly miss that wonderful man. Faygo, thank you for both, the song and the man.
A&W Root beer in a frosted mug at the local drive in, Vernor's Ginger Ale when ailing, and Faygo Red Pop on a hot summer's day. Nostalgia I embrace thee.
This brings back childhood memories when all soda pops were sweetened with natural sugar and not high fructose corn syrup like they are now. Plus, it does make you remember all the good times that were had in childhood. I haven't seen this commercial in years, until now. Thanks for uploading it.
Most cute commercials are cute the first two or three times, then they get old. This one never got old, and that silly laugh always drew our attention.
I wish I could go back to the 70's it was such a happy time for me being 10 or 11 years old.. The world was so much better then! This world now is such a mess!!!
I feel really strange here, I'm still in high-school, and here everyone is talking about showing this to their kids, and I admit there wasn't a Faygo song when i was a kid, but I drank It and explored my yard and what not. Just gonna sit here with my red pop and feel a little older than I am.
Hal "The Great Gildersleeve" Perry was Faygo's pitchman for years before this commercial. In those ads, he was a soda jerk selling Faygo Redpops to young children. That's why he's dressed up in those loud red vertical stripes. FYI: The Faygo people were the ones who created the term "pop" to describe their drinks because of the popping sounds they say their drinks made when they opened the bottles.
Thank you so much for posting this! Wonderful memories of growing up in Detroit! We actually had the 45 of this song...they sold it at Harmony House...does that bring back memories for anyone from Detroit?
Thank you soo much for posting this. It's amazing for me to see it again after all these years! It even brought tears to my eyes because of all the memories I shared with my (now deceased)grandparents. Grandpa was a HUGE Faygo lover and I'll never forget sharing his Faygo floats! lol (I also remember this song word-for-word. Amazing what you can remember 30-some years later! =p)
I remember this commercial from back in the day, but I didn't live in Detroit. I was in Buffalo, NY where it was shown. Brings back fun memories of being a kid, though.
thank you @limeliter for posting this video, I remember this when i was a kid and I recall it from time to time, my kids were asking me what i was singing and I was so happy to be able to show them this video, I remember the boblo boat and yes I love my Faygo!!! grape and redpop. Also my kogels and vernors, my michiganders know what I am talking about!!
How funny! My husband was trying to sing it for our son tonight and here it is, posted on UA-cam (I should have known!) Thanks so much, it really takes me back!
Thanks for the confirmation, I thought that looked like the boblo boat. Loaded down like it always was in the 70's. Nice to see that old comercial again.
I saw the Columbia docked, rusting downriver by a steel mill. Thought it was a goner for sure. I had tears seeing it like that. Glad to hear there is a new life for both. I just bought my kids real faygo in bottles just like back when. Had to play this for them. Poor kids nowadays. P.S. My kids love Gilligans Island, Lost in Space, and the Monkeys.
Your absolutely Right~ Saint Clair Shores Michigan now..Roseville Michigan when I was younger..thank you for reiterating for me! This is truly a Michigan song! Everyone sang it too! "Everyone that I know that is" L&R
That was beautiful to watch! THANK YOU, original poster -- it is SO surreal watching something you haven't seen since it was originally broad casted. Lovely stuff!
Thanks for posting this took me immediately back to my parents living room in our apartment in Riverview, Michigan in the 70's with the BIG 19 inch black and white TV; we didn't have a color set in our home yet. How I loved this when it came on. Thanks for regressing my age 35 years or so!
@curleyco -- Thank you so much for posting this commercial! I grew up near Detroit in the seventies and had a great childhood! I live in Calif now so I miss my home a lot. Seeing the commercial again for the first time made me cry. I have watched it over and over again.
I absolutely LOVED this commercial as a child... and love it even more now as an adult. *sigh* Between this and the Detroit Zoo commercial... I don't know which one I love more! They're both amazing!
You rekindled a memory here! And the red pop was always the last one he spoke of and the kid would always take it! Then another kid came along and the same thing would happen! I hope someone posts that commerical!
yes it does! i was a little kid in the 70's and as rumor has it, this commercial would come on and i would run from any part of the house to listen to it. red pop, rock & rye, all good stuff!
Sometimes the old ad campaigns are the best.. This is a great Summetime commercial. Even though Bob-Lo Island is not open anymore. Its still a good song. Catchy tune.
@curleyco I keep emailing them about the importance of this commercial tied in with their long, rich history in Detroit. The only response I've gotten so far is that they want to stay modern with their advertising. I tried to explain to them that the commercial will introduce a whole new era of customers, as well as reinvigorate their consumer base that has remained loyal through all of these years. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that they reconsider it soon.
I remember this one from TV and they actually sold a 45 rpm record with several versions-a radio commercial,tv(this one) and an extended version. I had one sadly it was destroyed years ago, but somewhere I have them recorded on cassette.
I toured the Faygo plant with school in 1976. At the end of the tour, we each got one can of pop (our choice) and a 45-RPM record with this jingle on one side and the a full-length folk guitar version of the song as it was before "that's why we remember" was replaced with "....make Faygo". I chose a new can of red pop, so I could compare the color of red #40 with the red #2 in a can I had bought earlier.
Such a cool post! Every time I go to the store, buy a bottle, I put this on and have a great cold glass of Faygo red pop. Nothing better at 50 than red pop! Anyone see my good '' plenty
My favorite as a kid was Faygo Grape. I'm not sure what kogels are but I do LOVE Vernors Ginger Ale and Better Made Potato chips(It's the only potato chip I'll buy.) I remember being out of state on vacation for the first time and looking for Better Made Chips and Faygo and remembered it was a Detroit thing. Boy was I disappointed. Great seing the Boblo Boat again. The last time I rode on it was late 80's or early 90's---just befor it was discontinued for good. Loved this commerial!!
@dillapp21 Wow, what a great idea. A throwback commercial that perhaps melds into an updated one... ? I have a feeling a LOT of people would just love it!
Totally forgot about Faygo! Fun hearing the song again after so many years. Does Faygo still exist? Moved overseas in '88 and haven't been back since '96. I remember "Towne Club", which I miss. No root beer where I live for many years. Sold here now, but still rare, expensive & only in cans. So happy when they started selling Dr. Pepper here. My kids love Dr. Pepper, but their friends think it's strange. My kids have never tasted root beer; have to splurge & let them try it! :)
They have a new rock version of the Faygo boat song on their redesigned website, along with a few of their commercials. The Boat Song was also used as a radio ad. There's also a TV ad with a mock-up of Laurel and Hardy going to the store to buy Redpop, only to trash the store with their usual clumsiness.
The fellow leading everything as I recall played a "bartender" in earlier commercials dispensing Faygo. I'd like to see those if they ever become available.
I loved Faygo red pop. I'd buy a bottle of it with my allowance every Friday night when I was ten years old. This makes me remember Bill Kennedy at the movies, Rita Bell and the Prize movie, and The Ghoul.
I remember my Dad could get me working on our house in the heat of the day for a bologna sandwich, better made potatoe chips, and Faygo red pop!
I got teary eyed watching this! I'm so Detroit!
Me too. Every time... (sigh)
ME TO
Me too Sister. Hugs! Still love Detroit! Let's bring our City back to life. ~ Much Love Sage ~
The video trolls never surprise me. Always having something completely asinine to say. Thanks, Nickcb13b, for staying true to form.

Oh boy do I remember this commercial. That's DETROIT!!!! 😉

+drkjk - You named my favorites. I rather have those than a Pepsi or Coke.
This brings back childhood memories when all soda pops were sweetened with natural sugar and not high fructose corn syrup like they are now. Plus, it does make you remember all the good times that were had in childhood. I haven't seen this commercial in years, until now. Thanks for uploading it.
+frschoonover1 You any relation to the Schoonovers in Macomb County?
+CameronDiazTwin I don't know. Where's Macomb County anyway?
+frschoonover1 Just North of Detroit, Michigan
Watching this commercial and hearing the song just flooded my head of my childhood back in Michigan. Thank you for posting and making me smile.
Most cute commercials are cute the first two or three times, then they get old. This one never got old, and that silly laugh always drew our attention.
I agree wholeheartedly!!
I wish to God they would bring this commercial back. Its such a classic.
I wish I could go back to the 70's it was such a happy time for me being 10 or 11 years old.. The world was so much better then! This world now is such a mess!!!

I got some Faygo Red Pop in my fridge, just waiting. How I loved this commercial when I was a kid, and I still do. Thank you so much for posting.
I feel really strange here, I'm still in high-school, and here everyone is talking about showing this to their kids, and I admit there wasn't a Faygo song when i was a kid, but I drank It and explored my yard and what not.
