    i absolutely love scv's tenor writing, it's not just the snare book with 4 drums, there's their own parts even when they're playing at the same time as the snares

      I marched SCV (horns) in the Sanford era. He was a super cool dude to me, and to everyone. Even to this 17 year old horn nerd. I went to high school with Rob Carson, Daryl Cox, Keith Wald, and other JONZ. Several other SCV Hall of Famers too in the late 70s-early 80s.
      Our freaky "show band" at Cupertino HS AKA "the marching millions" (250 strong) turned out so many SCV superstars: horns, guard, and drums. It was not uncommon to see members of the SCV rifle line practicing in their front yards in my Santa Clara 'hood in the 70s. Great times.

      Camera operators need to be totally retrained. The simplest and most basic concept is to completely understand what the average viewer wants to see. My favorite example is in pro sports, particularly, baseball and football. It disgusts me how much time is spent with things other than the sport. The sport is about the players, not just close ups of the manager eating sunflower seeds or a player blowing snot out of one nostril. The point is the fan goes to a game and watches what he wants and when home the fan watches what the camera operator dictates. Often it's just a couple of players omitting the rest. Boring! DCI is generally very good at not omitting the whole field. Bravo!

    Scott Johnson said scv was boring and BD always pushed the envelope, I believe in 2015 or 14 he said that. well scv must have herd and said "hmm ok" and killed it!

      Os Z I also heard from some of the 2016 SCV battery techs that after Paul had the opener written there was an apparent miscommunication amongst the design team regarding tempo. He, allegedly, wrote that part of the book to groove and work 10 bpm slower than eventually performed. The battery was playing through the opener before the staff figured out the goof. Paul opted to keep it as written because the line was throwing down.
      That's the story I heard.

      Os Z
      Scojo has NO right to be saying that their book is "boring". I mean, if you haven't noticed, they play the same damn rhythm in EVERY show for about 20 measures, in 2016, it was where the snares were all running up to line up and even the tenors and basses play the same damn rhythm. At least Rennick has style and uniqueness to his writing, Scojo is losing it. That's insane how someone like that can be so childish.

    • @MichaelReedPercussion
      @MichaelReedPercussion  7 років тому +5

      My opinion is better music education and the Internet. One of my biggest goals is to teach my students better than I was taught. At least in many parts of Texas, school districts and band programs hire full-time percussion directors to oversee percussion education for grades 6-12. This has been going on in some areas since the 90s. We're now seeing the results of second generation graduates of such programs.

    • @jaredkronenwetter7460
      @jaredkronenwetter7460 8 років тому

      I don't think they evaluate individual drum scores until Atlanta. I could be remembering wrong though. but I'm pretty sure it's just overall music.

    • @johndeer4789
      @johndeer4789 8 років тому

      +Jared Kronenwetter They've definitely been evaluating percussion all season long, as well as every other caption as usual. Bluecoats got the highest drum score in San Antonio this weekend.
      The recaps get leaked sometimes fortunately.
      This summer they have a combined music score which is all you see on the public recap.
      I can't see how they wouldn't evaluate the two musical captions (brass and percussion) and still come to a overall musical score for every corps. There has to be an evaluation of content and achievement to pretty much get to every score in DCI, and without judges running around the field with recorders in there hands, corps' wouldn't be getting any judge tapes (which they need) and scores would be fabricated from a guy/women in the press box.
      I'm not entirely sure why DCI won't put the full recap online though.

    Is it me or do the tenor players start leaning forward a lot when they play harder stuff? I know they're tenor gods and all but it does look a bit weird.

      I'm pretty sure partially just them really getting into it and partially moving their shoulders forward for a more comfortable range of motion

    Mr.reed I play snare and I'm a freshman we also you Paul rennicks as my drumline instructor and used to be my band teacher is sponsored by them. Do have a specific rudiment or main focus that you want your student's or someone your teaching a main goal

      KussDomi : Hey, sorry for this late reply. To answer your question, no, there isn't one specific rudiment. For me and my students, there are some main areas of focus (to work on constantly, and usually simultaneously): timing, proper technique, sound quality, and chops. TIMING: use a met (or quantized music) 99.9% of the time you practice. Count and mark time to everything you play. Play more timing patterns than shopping sprees. Use an earbud to keep the met close to your brain. Rather than hearing a met and a drum equally, you would be listening to the rhythms being fileted through the met. PROPER TECHNIQUE: watch your fulcrum, monitor which lever(s) (arm, wrist, fingers) you are using and in what combinations, and beware of tension/tightness. That's usually an indication of poor body mechanics and improper technique. TONE QUALITY: Listen. Always listen. Especially the inner beats (taps). Get off the pad and listen to a drum. Use good sticks (well-matched and not cracked). If it looks like a beaver has been teething on your shot zone, it's been time for new sticks already. CHOPS: push yourself in both duration and tempo several times per week. Play 100 reps of something (even if it's not fast). It's good for the head and the hands. Play an hour-long roll (even if it's basically 16th notes {RRLL RRLL RRLL RRLL...}). Long duration helps teach efficiency and proper technique. Basically, bad technique can force its way through 8 bars of an exercise. However, it doesn't work for 50 back-to-back reps, much less 100.
      Other stuff to consider... DOUBLE-STOP EXERCISES: Anything that can be played as double-stops, should be. This improves timing, tone quality, and chops. Basically, it's like drumming with your center or instructor, except it's your weak hand drumming with your dominant hand. GRIDS: gridding is life. Learn everything "backwards off the left". If you aren't familiar with "The Grid" and/or "4-2-1", look up @thegridbookseries and @hueiyuanpan on Instagram and Twitter. Also, checkout Bill Bachman's www.drumworkout.com
