      Hey guys. I really enjoy your content. Keep up the great work. So I have a request. It's not a television show or a movie. It's a video game. I know, i know. But before you go judging, this isn't a Call of Duty or anything like that. The video game Medal of Honor 2010 was inspired by real operations that took place in the early days of the Afghanistan war. It involved CAG, DEVGRU, Rangers, and there was mention of Green Berets and allied Afghan forces in cutscenes. Some of the operations/missions featured were Robert's Ridge, Operation Redwings, and Anaconda to name a few. It would be interesting to get you guy's opinions and views on how this game portrayed authenticity. Especially if you get any CAG, DEVGRU or Ranger guests on your show. Even if you don't do an episode on this game, check it out for yourselves. I'm pretty sure you can watch someone else play the game all the way through on UA-cam.

    I served 21 years in the US Army and was an Airborne Ranger, Master Gunner, etc. My commander went on to serve 5 years with Delta Force and this TV series was our favorite. Granted, this episode, was far fetched. This usually happens because was the Pilot show and had to be greenlit. However, if you continue watching the Series, you will see that it leans more to the realistic side of Delta Force. Also, keep in mind that this show was based on Eric L. Haney's Memoir "Inside the Delta Force". He was the on-site Military Advisor the the 4 seasons of the Show. Again, the initial couple of episodes were far fetched but eventually, it reverted back to the most realistic Military Tv series most of Veterans have ever seen...including Eric Haney

  • @JonNo86
    @JonNo86 8 місяців тому +73

    I remember also breaking this apart hard the first time I watched it, and then I watched a behind the scenes interview with Eric Haney, who was one of the first graduates of Delta selection, the executive producer, the tech advisor, and the author of the book this show is based off of. He broke down this episode and justified almost every move that was made, including the reason of why he didn't wear body armor while taking the plane. He said it was because they were trained not to because you wouldn't want to get your kit stuck on a passenger seat while flowing through the aisles. Speed was the key. Also the reason for the 1911 was the fact that Delta made it a point for decades for them to be the most qualified operators in the world with the 1911.

    Man, I love this show. One of my favorite aspects is that the wives are just as capable as the husbands, but in their own way. Are they Tier-1 operators? No. But they hold down the homefront; provide emotional support (and logistical support when the episode calls for it); and show why they're worthy of the husbands they married. Everything about the relationships on this show emphasizes the importance of teamwork.
    P.S. Max Martini (the actor who played as Mack Gerhardt) also played as the SEAL commander in _Captain Phillips._ He was the one who gave the order to execute just as the SEAL snipers took out the Somali pirates.

    The Unit was an early 2000s show with 1980s TTPs. Eric Haney had been out of the Unit for a very long time and many of season 1-2 plots were adapted from his book (for which he was PNG'd, I believe). Watching it, you could see some of the legit (if dated) elements trying to shine through the Hollywood filming. After the writers' strike, it turned to absolute trash. At the time, though, there was nothing like it. I mean, before that we had The A-Team.

The tactics were good if not exactly flawlessly realistic like in some more recent shows, but the atmosphere, the dialogue, and the decent tactics were groundbreaking at the time, and still fantastically enjoyable. When your other buddy comes in, maybe do some of the later episodes with some of the longer gunfights also. The pilot was a one off and the style changed quite a bit.

    The show is about the top tier Delta alpha team that on occasion gets their orders directly from the president in person, so, they can arrive at a command post and if necessary answer any questions on a need to know basis. Will you be reacting to a few more episodes?

    The unit was good for the time . There were no other shows in this category at the time especially on cable. The show gets better and u got to remember most people watching aren’t special operations guys who r going to nit pick everything. The most important thing at the time was is it entertaining and yes it was. Seal team is the modern day unit. Obviously they were not going to show u the real inter workings of cag especially in the early mid 2000s when less was known and there wasn’t a 1000 podcasts giving everyone a glimpse behind the curtain. Take the show with a grain of salt. Pretty good for the time. I remember watching the show in my barracks room and being entertained. All the women drama was so your wife would be willing to watch with u even tho the guys would prefer to be with out it.

    This is how civilians HOPE it works: we have someone who is an expert that can overrule all the bureaucrats with access to all the best gear at a moments notice. They just don't realize everyone has to fill out paperwork.

    if I recall, the dude on the phone is a disabled Unit member, who may or not still be 'connected' or working with an alphabet agency. and the location is something of a 'base' with all the necessary gear, coms, etc. again, it may have been staging for a planned operation. and from previous episodes, the white dude is a pilot. and of course, it's TV and this scene is probably 15-20 years old. that said, you guys are the Siskel and Ebbert of the Special Ops world. enjoy immensely.

    To be fair to the writers about the second schene, the guy they were visiting was a retired Delta CSM. So, he would be well stocked with weapons, commo and what not.

  • @gman21266
    @gman21266 8 місяців тому

    CSM Eric L. Haney was a Co-Producer of this tv show.
    He was also a founding member of Delta - and he lasted far longer than most in The Unit.
    Now I could tell you a LOT more about him - because I worked with him for 2 and a half years in Central America back in the late 80's -- before these guys were born.
    But I won't bore you with war stories...
    Instead, what I will tell you is that Haney is an absolute LEGEND among legends.
    He was 100% Professional 100% of every day. Extreme dignity and honor and mentality - and skill.
    And he ALWAYS protected our military.
    He caught a lot of flack when he wrote "Inside Delta Force". But the flack he caught was stupid because he never actually gave away any secrets.
    And the same goes with this tv show.
    And quite frankly it is disturbing to see a couple of Green Berets trashing this show without clarifying that Haney made sure it was NOT realistic and without giving him props for doing so.

    Still love the "call signs" Snake Doctor, Cool Breeze, and Dirt Diver. ....and how many of those names (or a derivative of) ended up as a screen name you played against in the early 2000's Modern Warfare. The show was definitely farfetched, largely because the action scenes were made for TV. Even back then, there weren't many retired high speed guys providing industry expertise to the cast and crew, so many TV shows and movies are laughable at best by today's standards. If I remember correctly, the show was canned because of a writer's strike and it wasn't resurrected. What always made me laugh, whether the Unit was set in the "south pacific jungle", eastern Europe, or Central America, the terrain always looked remarkably like southern California high desert. I still can't flip the channel if it's on a re-run, so it's not the worst show I've ever seen.

    I can’t lie when I was a young man this was one of my favorite shows. After watching your breakdown I could not stop laughing. Great job. On another note I spent 28 years in the NYPD, and I worked from time to time with the FBI. A lot of them are just lawyers with guns.Some are clueless. Some are the real deal but man I could tell you stories that would leave you scratching your head.
