Don't know if anyone will see this, but you can just get a paint scraper with replaceable blades for a scraper and you'll be golden.
And for the pumice stone, you can buy a whole box of grill bricks for cheap and now you have a lifetime supply of them for the cost of 2 or 3 of those ones you showed
That's a great idea about the paint scraper. And I didn't realize you could get the grill bricks cheaper. Where do you get those at?
One of your videos that didn’t start with a beer some place. I guess I’ll have to find a new channel….😉😂😉. Well done brother.
Right?? I was like “who is this guy?” Lol
I knew I was forgetting something!!!! I need to make a check list.
-drink beer.
-cook food on griddle.
-start diet next week.
😁
I hear their is some “king” guy that’s pretty good….lmao
I almost unsubed😂

Howdy Johnny, I was in Columbus Friday night Saturday morning whilst my wife was at a meeting. Flipped a coin to determine if I would hang with the wife or attempt to contact you. Wife won. Thanks for the pumice stone tip. Griddle is starting to have areas of build up nothing serious. Nice to know I can level the seasoning with the pumice stone and not have to strip it all the way down to metal. Have A Day! ;~)
Hey buddy, I think you made the right choice lol. Ya I was out with the family Friday night. Have a great day!
I love your demeanor on camera. Very laid back and straight forward. You seem like the kind of guy I would want for a neighbor! I follow your channel, although I have a stainless steel griddle, I assume most of the principals apply. Keep the vids and the inspiration coming!
Thanks Brad I'm so glad you like the channel and I appreciate you watching! Yes all the principals should still apply for a stainless. Have a good one buddy.
@@JohnnyBrunet I just bought a Blackstone and found your channel. I've seen a few others but you do an awesome job of being real and to the point with some humor.
Thank you man! - Coop
@@jimcoop5663 hey Coop, thanks so much for watching and congrats on the new griddle. I'm so glad you like the videos.
You can always use a glove when you clean your grill if you’re close to the heat, there is an extra glove somewhere in the world 😬..lol. Thanks always for your input Johnny 🍺🍺
Very true lol. Cheers buddy 🍺🍻🍻
omg, i just bought a blackstone and bought one of those stones with it, so glad i watched this thanks for explaining that!
You're welcome, thanks for watching.
Just want to see thank you for the videos. Currently going through a kitchen remodel and I have brought back a nexgrill from the dead lol.. went from no use and rusty to great condition and making meals.. can’t wait for more videos!
That's awesome! I'm so glad the videos have helped to fire back up the nexgrill! Thanks so much for watching and good luck with that remodel. I know those things can take a while.
I’m cheap!! Love it. My wife says the same about me!!
😂😂😂 great minds think alike.
That Short Scraper with a welding glove is the way I go...
I just bought the 17 inch to bring with me while I'm on the road away from home
Heck ya!
Looking forward to your final opinion on the Grydle Mat
I have a Blackstone soft cover for my 22". I solved the "drooping" issue by putting a pint glass upside down in the center of the griddle before I put the cover on. 9 months in, through the winter, with no issues.
That's a great idea for soft covers. Thanks for sharing Joe.
Orale Johnny! Planning on getting my first griddle next month n am really enjoying ur content 🔥
Tha ks for watching. And that's exciting I hope you get the griddle soon. You're going to love it.
Another good vid with good tips. I use the Scotchbrite green scour pads. Heat up the grill and pour oil and scrub. Works for slightly rusted tops. Now I need to use my palm sander as the cooktop is a s orange as a pumpkin! Keep up the good content.
Ya I had to dand mine down too! Thanks for watching.
Great ideas. Thank you
You are so welcome!
Thanks Johnny for the parchment paper tip, never thought of that. I have a piece of cardboard the size of the cooking surface (from the original box, I'm cheap too) and lay that on surface then I put my 1-burner Pit Boss Grill of top of that then a regular plastic grill cover. So, no pooling of water cuz it is domed from the grill under the cover! Melaney from SoCal
Your welcome Melaney I hope it's helpful. That's a great idea using your one burner to tent the cover. Now you got both grills safe while only using one cover! Thanks for watching.
So I bought the Blackstone soft cover for mine. To prevent pooling, I took PVC pipe and built a frame to be able to tent the cover. Water rolls right off.
Hey Johnny - I now have my second BlackStone, I love flattop cooking. I have learned so much from watching your videos, Hungry Hussey and the Waltwins. I have loved all your content, until the end of this video...when you showed the trimming of the silicone griddle buddy. That was when you slipped up...I saw your gloves - Ugh!!! M-GoBlue!!! HaHaHa. Have a great day Pal...Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Hey Jim I'm so glad my videos have been helpful and appreciate you watching. And hahahaha that's too funny about the gloves, ya I'm an alumi from Ohio State. I would say something whitty back but after theses past two years I just need to be quiet lol. Thanks so much for watching
I’ve been meaning to get one of those pumice stones. Think you just talked me into getting one. My wife says thanks a lot. 🤣
Hahahaha 🤣 tell her I said you're welcome!😁
When you do, try to get the one made by Blackstone, with the handle/holder. It'll hold the pumice stone for you, and give you a secure place to hold it without it rolling all over the griddle.
I use both a hard cover and silicone mat for my Camp Chef. Although both were pricey, I do not regret the investment. The mat is for extra piece of mind.
Ya that's kind of why I got mine too Jamez.
Great video. I've been eyeing those silicone mats. I can't wait for your thoughts on it. Keep up the good work.
Thanks Mark glad you liked it.
I have the same cover for my Camp Chef and covers it perfectly. I prefer using a dome when needed, so I don't miss an attached cover. Actually, I think the new Camp Chef griddles come with a lid, but not sure. Good info.
Oh ya they definitely come with hard covers now. It looks pretty nice too.
Great info. Thanks.
You're welcome Tom, thanks for watching.
Thank you!
You're welcome Sarah, thank you for watching.
Awesome video man!!
Thanks Ramona!
Got a hard cover? You won't need the 'griddle buddy'. Just re-oil your griddle after use with Avocado oil. Mice don't like Avocado oil. On your next use, wipe off the Avocado oil and reheat. The remaining Avocado will burn off, and you can use whatever oil for preparing this meal.
Thanks
You're welcome Billy, thanks for watching.
Thanks!
You're welcome, thank you so much for the Super Thanks! I really appreciate it.
In a handful of your videos I see that Green Egg lurking in the background, while it isn’t a griddle Aunt Millie’s Texas Toast is screaming for a debut!
Ya I'm still learning how to use that egg. It will definitely make its debut some day.
You need to add a silicon/rubber-based oven mit. I use mits from day one when seasoning (no need for tongs). Same goes for the short scraper. With oven mits, you never worry about heat.
That's a good idea Trevor, those are very nice. Thanks!
I thought the bonus would be a beer caddy!
It should have been!
Thanks Johnny - you have a great radio voice and demeanor. While not essential your E-book is also a good leg up for those of us starting to griddle. What did you conclude on the silicone mat - worth it or not?
Thanks so much. Sorry I still haven't done my final conclusion video on the mat, but the short answer is no, it's not worth the money. A hard cover will do the same or better.
Watching another video. The thing I like about your channel is you don't get constant upgrades and the newest and best griddles on the market. I already feel like I'm behind bcs I just have a 17" Single Burner Griddle. These other guys are to big business for me. You're just a regular good old boy like myself. Getting by with what you have. I appreciate that. Thank You For Being You. ❤🎉😊
I'm thinking it's time for a pumice stone, mine is looking pretty rough. Thanks for the info.
You're welcome Dale.
The guitar isn't loud enough. XD Thanks for the advice, and tips!
Thanks Jon!
The silicone thing looks interesting, and I look forward to seeing what you think of it. I'm kinda struggling to see the benefit😊
That's where I'm leaning towards as well Bobbi. It's definitely not as good as a hardcover. I'm going to give it another few weeks then do my review. Right now I'm not thinking it's worth the money.
@@JohnnyBrunet I just picked one up even though I’ve got a hard cover. I’m thinking it’ll help with dust, debris, pests, and maybe help prevent rust, though I’m not certain about that
@@ericwillard2364 ya it definitely could help with that. I don't have a lot of pests bc Im in the city but I feel like it would be very useful for that. We'll see though, I'm sure it's not going to hurt anything.
@@JohnnyBrunet I’m in the city too, but there are still mice and trash pandas aplenty. I’m sure that if I keep it clean they won’t be attracted to it, but the thought of mice on my griddle grosses me out to the point where it’s worth the investment, because if I ever saw a mouse on my griddle, I’d have to sandblast it. The griddle, not the mouse. Though I suppose there is some merit to making an example out of interlopers.
@@ericwillard2364 hahaha now I'm just picturing a mouse being sandblaster. Ya I haven't seen any mice but that would def creep me out. We doo have our fair share of trash pandas but they haven't messed with my griddle yet. Fingers crossed.
got our two burner blackstone griddle several weeks ago. it came with a hinged cover. got a whole cover as well. probably overkill but whatever. it has the airfryer and warming drawer. do you have those and if so, have you done video ideas with those?
Hi Dean I do not have the air fryer on mine but those look awesome, I'm super jealous. Congrats on the new griddle and I don't think the hinged lid and cover is overkill. You'll be happy when there's not water on there and you don't get rust, it's def worth it. My reccomendation with the air fryer would be to start with some sides to go with smash burgers and cheese steaks. So frozen stuff like french fries, tater tos, cheese sticks ect.... Also my buddy loves putting wings in his so maybe give that a try. Thanks so much for watching.
That griddle cover is the sheeit. Dig it. Also, no beer? Da fug?
I know I need to get back on the wagon, or is it off the wagon? Well I'm not sure wherever the beer is at that's where I need to be 😁
Hi Johnny. I love your channel. Where is your beer?
I have a question for you regarding flat top griddles in general.
Griddles stay outside all day and all night long, they are seasoned with oil. How do you keep the mice and other rodents off of the flat top surface when not in use? I have a small 22” Blackstone grill that I keep upright so that the surface is on a very sharp angle where the mice cannot crawl up. What can you do on a 36 inch or bigger flat top to keep the mice away from camping out or using the flat top as a toilet?
Hey thanks so much I'm glad you like the videos! I am lucky and don't have any mice problems but that is supposedly one of the benefits of this griddle buddy mat. Also I've heard people use dryer sheets to keep the mice away 🤷🏻♂️. I don't know from experience but I've heard it works.
Love your videos, and your relaxed approach. With Dutch ovens they can get a rancid smell if they are sealed with oil in them for too long. I’m wondering if that is a possibility with that silicone cover?
Yes that's a concern of mine as well. I will have to wait and see if I notice anything. Glad you like the videos and I really appreciate you watching.
@@JohnnyBrunetCan you update on this at all?
@@HastSkull yes sorry I've been procrastinating on this follow up video. Long and shirt of it is "it works but I don't know if it's worth the money". I mean it stops stuff from getting o there and it doesn't get rancid because it's outside. But I still feel like a hard cover is all you need. You could accomplish the same thing as this product just by using some parchment paper.
@@JohnnyBrunet thank you! The wife and I just got a griddle and the internet has chosen you to be our griddle guru
If Strickland propane sold flat top grills Johnny brunet would be employee of the month.
It would be the greatest honor of my life to work for Strickland Propane 😁
Have you considered using stainless steel chainmail like is used to clean cast iron?
I haven't used that but that's a great idea. I bet it would work just the same.
I cover mine with a throw-away sheet of commercial/extra wide aluminum foil (from a roll). Works like a charm!
Ya that's seems way more economical.
Love the videos I just bought a griddle and I’m definitely going to be hittin a ton of your recipes. What type of oil do you use?
Thanks! I've used a bunch of different kinds. Usual canola or crisco. I've also used avocado. It worked fine but was too expensive for me. And finally I like peanut oil when frying.
@@JohnnyBrunet thank you!
What I do is as soon as the griddle top is cool enough to handle, I take it off, place it in a heavy-duty trash bag and bring it into my house. After not griddling for a few months due to the cold, wet conditions, I took it out, wiped it down and cooked some burgers with it. It was fantastic, the seasoning was still perfect, and it cleaned right up. Put it up, had to go out of town for a few days, pulled it out this morning and did bacon, potatoes with onions, peppers and tomatoes and then finished with sunny side up eggs... Again, it was perfect. Bacon kinda sticks to the griddle sometimes when the grill is first seasoned but not today, scrapped up easily and quickly, nothing stuck, transitioning to each element of the cook was effortless and the eggs were perfect, came right off the griddle no issues.
To be honest, with all the issues I had last year due to moisture I was ready to toss the darn out on the curb. Doing this has made my cooks pleasant and enjoyable again.
Always enjoy the content my friend, keep on griddling!
That's the way to do it. I wish I was that disciplined. Thanks so much for all the suggestions I think it will be very helpful for people. Have a good one brother.
Hey Johnny, what's good. Cool tips and tricks. What's next. Are you working on any Colabs???
Hey Bruno! I don't have any set up right now but ai might reach out to some people.
Hi Johnny - Did you end up doing a full review on the griddle mat? I’m trying to decide if I should just do the mat, just the hard cover , or both?
Sorry Joshua I haven't done that yet. My short answer is just do a hard cover. That may isn't worth it for the price.
@@JohnnyBrunet Thanks! And thanks for the great videos!
@@JoshuaTown you're welcome, thanks for watching.
Griddle buddy - would there be a reason to worry that it would trap moisture and possibly rust the cooking surface?
Ya I had that concern as well. It never happened to me but I also don't use my griddle buddy anymore. I accidentally let it get dirty.
Safety note, you should have the glove on the other hand if you slip it could prevent a nasty cut.
Great point.
Will the add on top keep mice out of the griddle cooking surface area ?
Luckily I dont have a mice problem so I can't speak to that. I assume it would keep them from physically touching the griddle surface if they get under your lid but I don't think it will keep them off all together. I have heard people say they put dryer sheets in to keep mice away. I don't know if it works, but that's what I heard.
I live in the suburbs and have a dog but still had a horrible time with mice getting on my blackstone and using it as a restroom that I sold it. I tried a hard cover. I even posted on a blackstone forum for suggestions and got nothing. Maybe that silicon cover didn’t exist until recently.
Man that stinks. I never realized how lucky I've been to not have droppings.
How bout a bench scrapper? Seems very similar to dough scrapper
I haven't used it but I think it would work.
When the griddle is brand new, should you spray the underside of the cook top to prevent rust?
By under do you mean the bottom where the flames touch the steel? No you don't have to do that but I do try to wip oil all around the walls of the griddle top to prevent rust.
@@JohnnyBrunet ok, thx. Just wasn't sure if the bottom would last longer if you coated it with a thin coat of oil.
@@thebigdoghimself I've never do e it but maybe.
They have stainless steel drywall knives at home depot.
Ya those work great! We used them at a restaurant I worked at.
How about taking care of the underside of the griddle?
Do you mean where the flame touched it? I've actually never lifted kine up and cleaned there. That might be worth me looking into. Thanks Alex.
Johnny did you see the new camp chef griddle doesn't come with grill grates??
No I didn't. What size is it the FTG 600?
@@JohnnyBrunet yep FTG600GL is the new model number. I was about to pull the trigger but no grill ability however it comes with a hinged lid for $600 doesn't seem like a good deal anymore.
@@Yankees177 hmm that's interesting. Well at least they added a kid that's a good call.
where did you get the smalll cooling rack
Hi Janet, I got it off of Amazon. Here's the link. I love it.
amzn.to/3SARx6t
I have used heirloom cast iron for decades. I was always taught don't put anything on your cast iron that you wouldn't eat. I've had soap in my mouth a few times. But that silicone. Definitely not on my cast iron 🇺🇲💯
That makes sense to me.
Hi Johnny, thanks for the cleaning video. I followed your instructions when I first bought my grill last season, and I followed your instructions on cleaning it every time I use it. I use that little scraper that you have and when I’m done cooking I scrape everything off the top and then I spray water on it while it’s still hot and steamy it off, then let that all evaporate off and add the light coat of oil. Then I cover it until next time. The problem is, next time I use it, I turn the grill on let it heat up and then add oil to it, and the oil has a rusty brown look to it. I’m not sure if it’s rust or old food? It just looks kind of gross. What am I doing wrong?
Hi Leo, that is very strange it sounds like you're doing everything correctly. Only thing I can think is while the water is steaming I still scrape. I'm using the water to scrape off any excess grease down into the catch. When you see the rust brown oil is it actual rust on the griddle or just the oil that's left over?
My initial guess is you need to continue to scrape down after you put the water on. Don't just wait for it all to evaporate off.
I hope that helps, let me know if it doesn't work.
Hi Johnny, thanks for the suggestion. I actually do use that little scraper while I put water on it steaming and then I take a paper towel wiping off all of the dirty water and then after is totally dry I wipe it with oil. Then the next time I turn it on boiling it the oil gets very cloudy and dirty looking. Maybe I’m not scraping enough? Maybe I need to use more water?
@@LeoDodier I'm not sure that's strange. It sounds like you're doing everything correctly. Maybe try burning off a layer or two of oil to add to the seasoning.
One good way to get debris (food) off the griddle is when the griddle is warm, not smokin' hot, a drizzle of water, and a shaking of Kosher salt. Rub that around your griddle surface, the same way you'd clean a cast iron skillet. The salt will act as an abrasive to get the food that's stuck on it, without removing any of the seasoning you've taken so much time to build up. But like he said, use a pumice stone once every couple of months to even things out, because while the salt is being an abrasive, it's also digging out the food that's stuck, and eventually, that can leave a bit of a hole in your seasoning.
I'm sure your uncle Bill Murray is very proud of you!
3rd time I've made that joke is PROBABLY the last...
🤣🤣🤣 I still take it as a compliment. He is the best!
@@JohnnyBrunet - So, ya' got that going for ya' - so that's nice.
@@harddocs 😁😁😁
Hmm the silicone cover interesting.
Ya I'm still up in the air on it.
Those orange griddle matts on Amazon are no longer available
Well dang that didn't last long Scott. I just got mine and now they're out. I wonder if it's temporary or if they went out of business already.
The reason they don't all come with hard tops covers is us, the buyer, everyone is cheap. Its like walking into a car dealership. Every manufacturer has the base model, the 1 above then all the way up to the premium model. So its no difference then griddles, they have the base model all the way up to the premium model.
Ya I agree Colin and there are a lot more options with hard tops now. For a while there it felt like only Blackstone offered it but now there's a lot. Thanks for watching.
