What I respect most is that you are not shy about showing your mistakes or happy accidents. Well, keep it positive and stay safe bro.
Thanks so much Ty! Always just trying to honest and positive.
The deep fry can cut time to less then half if you heat the cast iron in the oven first. You can do all your prep while pan heating so that when you take it to grill your all ready to go in minutes.
Thanks Randy great idea!
yeah that lodge skillet.... the cooking area is not on the blackstone. just the outside edges.
Hey just a tip for your popcorn recipe. That small plastic condiment cup that you used has the amount that it can hold on the bottom of the cup. So if you look at the bottom of the cup it will tell you if you are using a 2oz or 4oz so no need to get the measuring spoon dirty.
Thanks Mimi that's a great suggestion!
That grill looks great. Well seasoned.
3:57 when me and the homies playing saugy bisket and theirs 9 of us
Reminds me of watching interdenominational cable. Great job
Haha thanks Ruben.
I am subscribed, but I love it when your older videos show up in my feed. Great tips, thanks.
You're welcome Scott! I appreciate you watching all the old videos.
Nice, pretty cool ideas. Thanks.
Glad you like them!
Popcorn looks great! I use a camp stove for frying, heats faster and keeps the smell of fish outside. Great video as always.
Ya I wish I had a camping stove once my wife an I buy a house and move out of our condo I'll probably buy one for that exact purpose. I love fried fish but you just can't do it in the house especially not our 900 sq foot condo hahah. That thing would smell like fish for a week. Thanks for watching and commenting again Dale. Take er easy.

Got’a love this guy, shows you the tricks and doesn’t hide anything!
Thanks so much Doug I'm glad you liked it.
My Number 1 favorite griddle tool is that melting dome! Love it!
Oh ya the dome is great! So many uses and better than a lid because you can just dome individual items rather than the whole griddle. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for your tips! Looking forward to try them on my new/first griddle!!
You're welcome Raymond and congratulations on your new griddle.
Awesome video my man!
Thanks William!
I’ve yet to cook on my Blackstone but I was looking forward to cast iron frying…but now you got me thinking to just use the foil pan. Great idea! Thanks 🙏
you are welcome thanks for watching. The cast iron worked and someone else commented that they preheat there's in the oven so that might be an option. I mainly stick to the foil pan now though. Someone said they use a wok as well in the comments. I need to try that next.
I stick with the cast iron for some safety “peace of mind” I preheat with a small butane torch and it takes like 5 mins to warm up the pan then put oil in and in 10 mins oil is at about 325. Prep time prior to start cooking will make everything flow smoothly The Blackstone becomes addictive I rarely cook in the house anymore. Have fun breaking yours in.
@@bednar1435 That's very smart I don't have a butane torch but maybe I should get one. I agree with the "peace of mind" thing that was why I initially tried the cast iron. Someone else recommended preheating it in the oven first then just using the griddle to keep temp. Maybe I shouldn't give up on the cast iron just yet. Now I just need to convince my wife that I need a butane torch :) thanks for the good info and thanks for watching.
@@bednar1435 that’s a great point in terms of the added weight for safety instead of a flimsy tin foil full of boiling hot oil can be extremely dangerous. Very valid point, thanks for your comment!
New to griddlng, your videos have helped tremendously. Thank you!
You're very welcome and congratulations on the new griddle.
Great hacks Johnny. I gotta try the biscuits on the rack method, looked like perfection.
Thanks Todd! it def works out well on the rack.
Good tip for you on deep frying on the griddle and using cast iron. Preheat the cast iron on the stove on medium-high for like 3-5 minutes.
Tip for everyone else- If youre getting even mild heartburn after eating fried foods, switch from vegetable oil to peanut oil. Fixed my problem 100%.
Those are some great tips thanks so much for sharing. I am def going to try to preheat the cast iron inside next time.
Have you tried not eating fried food? Works too.
Your funny comment about your 1 year old + the fun hints for the griddle got me to subscribe. Thank you.
Thanks so much for subscribing ! He's almost three now I can't even believe how time has flown by. Feels like I just made this video yesterday.
I like the honesty and realism of this video. Its polished but its not just a howto but also a hownot-to.
Can you do a deep fried thick batter onion ring griddle video please?
Most videos are either paper thin weak batter or they go from start, miss the tricky bit and tadahh! Shop bought onion rings!
Thanks I'm so glad you like the videos. I'm not much of an expert on those thick batter onion rings either. I know they are hard to get that batter to stick. I think I saw someone soak the rings in buttermilk for like an hour once, maybe that will help. I usually just dip it in there real quick then go for the flour, but that doesn't seem to work well. If I figure it out I will let you know.
You’re over 20,000! That’s awesome! Really enjoy these videos keep up the good work
Thanks Dylan! I can't believe I'm over 20 either. It's crazy, I'm so grateful for it. I appreciate you watching the videos.
I love cooking on my Blackstone, but I HIGHLY recommend buying an inexpensive fryer burner with pot for deep frying. I think I spent 40 bucks on a 38,000 BTU propane burner. I have a splitter hooked up to the same propane tank my Blackstone is on. FAST and works like a charm.
Thanks Tim I had no idea you could get a burner for $40. That's a great idea with the splitter hooked up. I appreciate you watching and that's a great recommendation. Have a good one.
Great tip!
Definitely get a turkey fryer kit does huge amounts of wings fast
Another great video. Loved the popcorn hack
Thanks Randall it was my first time ever doing it and it was super easy. Normally I mess things up but this turned out good hahaha. Thanks for watching again buddy.
This video is great. All of it was new to me. Going to try it all soon.
Awesome, I'm so glad you liked it.
Nice little hacks there Johnny. Nice biscuits, wings, popcorn etc... I fried some bacon with your tin pan method, using my B.B.Q grill. Bacon came out great, nice and flat. I'm on the "Next Week Diet" also. GRIDDLE ON DUDE.
Thanks Bruno! I'm glad the foil pan worked out well, I use those things for all sorts of stuff. I'll start my diet when you do buddy. Griddle on brother.

You're welcome Lisa! Try adding sugar to make kettle corn.
I love the popcorn hack. That looks fun😊🍿👍
Thanks Bobbi it was a lot of fun. Now I need to learn how to do kettle corn.
I search for different flat-top cook videos and subscribed to your channel recently. Now when I search for Dr=inferential recipes I find yours every time. Just gonna stick to your playlists from now on. Great Cooks!
I like the style of these videos. Not trying to be all fancy schmancy like half the content on UA-cam that doesn’t really teach you anything
Thanks Doc! I appreciate the support.
The best way to do canned cinnamon rolls on the griddle is to use a burger press and press them down as flat as you can. You won’t be able to get it super flat, but get it as flat as you can. You will let it cook for about a minute or until you get that sense that they are ready and you flip them and press them down again. You will then let that side cook and warm up the icing in the microwave for like ten seconds. You will use that as a sauce. It creates a pancake-like cinnamon roll. Its delicious. Definitely try this. Also thanks for all the tips.
Edit: and then theres me who didn’t know that this channel existed until five minutes ago, liking it, subscribing, and scrolling through your vids and realing you already know🤦♂️. Of course you knew. You’re a master. Keep up the great work and sorry for the overwhelming set of instructions. Keep up the greatwork on the channel and I will definitely never stop watching. Very good. I like your tips. Nachos were looking mighty tasty. I didn't know I can make popcorn on the griddle. 👍👍
Thanks I'm glad you liked it and appreciate you stopping by.
Awesome video! I make popcorn like this when we go camping. Kids love it. One little thing/tip I do is when I put the oil down, I put 1 kernel on and when it pops, I know my oil is ready. (Those were the instructions for my “movie” kettle style popcorn machine) I’ve made it in a pan and directly on the griddle. Both work great. Where do you get those little racks? I would definitely like to make b&g and cinnamon rolls at the lake!
Thank you Big Joe I'm glad you like it. That's a good tip with the oil I will try that next time. I wanted to do some kettle corn! I got my little rack from a restaurant supply store but I got a link in my description of where you can get it them on Amazon. Thanks so much for watching.
I am about to go camping ( I lead an annual trip with my Army JROTC Unit). Instead of the dome, can I use a large aluminium pan to cook more popcorn for a camping group?
Pop Corn making sure your griddle is level. Love the hacks.
hahahaha ya that popcorn exposed exactly how unlevel my griddle really is :) I got it on these uneven patio pavers that are behind my condo. I really should just pull them up add some gravel and re do my back area but I'm too lazy, or too busy griddling hahaha. Thanks for watching I'm glad you liked them.
@@JohnnyBrunet that’s what book matches are for. 😀 the great levelers.
"I'll start my diet next week." Hahaha. Me too. Happy new year Johnnie! If you get a chance, try the popcorn using coconut oil if you have any on hand. That is common for popcorn machines.
Happy New Year James! I will definitely try the coconut oiI have some and enjoy cooking with it. I need to do the popcorn again anyways and try making kettle corn.
@@JohnnyBrunet Another thing you might like is to use clarified butter. It's said to have a higher smoke point than peanut oil, once clarified, but still gives you a buttery flavor.
@@jreese46 that's what I poured on top actually but I never thought to use it to fry the popcorn initially. I'll have to try that thank you.
Need a large metal ring for the popcorn, just smaller than the cover bowl.

@@JohnnyBrunet Bro!
Nice!!

Ok….not gonna lie, I was very skeptical on how much value would be in your $10 Book. I’m a very accomplished BBQ Chef and pretty damn good on the Griddle as well. Brother, let me tell you, VERY well done!!! For a beginner Griddler you covered everything and the Value is as advertised. Well done. I’d love to chat with you and get some ideas how you made the E-Book. Im considering one for Pellet Smoking
Hi Darren thanks so much for purchasing the e-book I really appreciate it. I'm so glad you liked it and more importantly for value out of it. I knew I couldn't make something super professional but I at least wanted the information to helpful and concise. Feel free to email me at griddlewithjohnny@gmail.com and I'd be happy to go over the process with you.
As always…love this video. Planning on starting my diet next week too, so until then, I have one question. What do you do with the used oil from your “shallow fry” cooks? How do you dispose it?
Thanks Chase! I let the oil cool down then keep it in a gladware container. You don't have to throw it away each time, at restaurants they'll use the oil in there fryer for a few before they change it out. And they're frying multiple things each day. Of course this depends on the restaurant and how much they fry. When I worked at outback we changed it every night bc of the bloomn' onions. Anyways I wouldn't throw it away until you've used it like 10 times or so because it's still good. When you do throw it away still let it cool down then pour it in an empty can or old two liter bottle and throw it away. Just don't put it down the drain.
@@JohnnyBrunet I worked short order and Yuppie venues.for years in Louisiana (North). We would rotate our fryers and filter the oil hot. It held very well. When it was burned out we would pour it over the "Slop" and the guy running the place would sell it to pig farmers in the area.
@@paulsherman7802 Oh wow that's super interesting. I worked at Outback for a year and we had filter four fryers a night so I know exactly whay you're talking about. It was a heck of a process but had to be done daily because we breaded so many items. Thanks for watching and for sharing your experience.
@@JohnnyBrunet I was a manager at Burger King in a past life, and we filtered the oil every night after it had cooled down to about 200* (for safety reasons). When the oil started looking a little _too_ dark, we'd only replace about 75% of it with new oil. The reason we didn't replace it with 100% _new_ oil was because fries cooked in 100% new oil didn't _look_ right and they didn't _taste_ right either!
So I use _that_ as a model/example for how I handle my cooking oil today! I always retain about 25% of my old oil to mix with the new oil. That way I get a good head start on the flavor/appearance thing!
@@MikeInExile thanks for the suggestion that makes a lot of sense.
Do you ever clean your Blackstone.....
We like to make Smashed Cinnamon Rolls on the Griddle!! So Good
Oh ya those are so good, they get a little crust on them! Thanks for watching Jon.
The cast iron pan can be quickly preheated on a side or stove burner or propane torch, then placed on the griddle and filled with oil.
That's a great point, thank you.
Yep, next week.
I find adding butter to oil-popped popcorn makes it too greasy.... so the best shortcut ever is to just use clarified butter as your popcorn oil. It adds all the flavor you don't have to add any butter after, just some popcorn salt and you're done, it's perfect.
Thanks for the tip Andri!
Butter contains about 20% water which will make the popcorn soggy when drizzled on it, so I recommend _not_ doing that. Instead, drizzle the popcorn with some additional clarified butter or ghee which doesn't contain water and won't make the popcorn soggy.
If ya want to go all out and make 'movie theater' popcorn, do this: Use butter flavored _coconut oil_ to pop the corn, then drizzle clarified butter or ghee on the popped corn if so desired. Salt it with a product called "Flavacol" popcorn salt which you can find on Amazon (I've never seen it in any grocery store). Instead of drizzling clarified butter or ghee on the popped corn, try using that spray-can butter which you can find next to the popcorn in the grocery store. Pro tip: It might sound gross, but you can save some money by using butter flavored Pam cooking spray instead of the popcorn spray - it's actually the _same_ stuff (butter flavored vegetable oil)!
Happy popping!
@@MikeInExile thanks so much!
I like to use a wok to deep fry in, on the griddle, because it’s much thinner than cast iron heats up real fast.
That's good to know Vet Dad thanks for sharing. I'll have to get one and give it a try.
good vid dood!!!
Thanks Harry!
Love the video! Holy smokes that was A LOT of butter you put on there... I assume that was or the video!
Thanks so much Yussef! Ya I went full movie theater with the butter hahahaha.
92k views in 11 days!! Keep on griddlin Johnny!!!!
Thanks Chuy! I can't believe it I don't know what happened. I'm just happy that people seem to like it.
Another great video. I really like you doing the good and the bad. I wonder how the popcorn would come out if you evenly coated the popcorn in a bowl before putting it on the griddle? Sounds like it would be more controlled. Stay well Dave “Obi Wan”
Haha thank you master Kenobi, one day I will truly become a griddle Jedi knight 😂. I do think that would work better. I preheated the oil because that's how this popcorn maker at one of my previous jobs worked. It always said put the oil in for a minute then add the kernels. I'll try your way next time because I'm definitely going to do a kettle corn version. Thanks Dave and have a good one buddy.
@@JohnnyBrunet I have no idea. It just seems like it would be easier to coat it more evenly. I’m not suggesting leaving it for long. Keep up the great videos
@@davidstouffer6561 there's only one way to find out and I'm going to give it a go. I like doing experiments on the griddle. And thank you I'm glad you think the videos are great.
If you really want to save time- you don’t have to coat them all in oil. The kernels in the hot oil will pop and the popped kernels stay on top of the uncooked kernels. Just a bit of science. The smaller denser particles will sink to the bottom whereas the larger, less dense particles will always end up on the top
If you have a outdoor griddle you probably have a burner set up to so if your dead set to deep fry on the griddle you can get oil a 25 50 degrees hotter say around 400 on burner then move skillet to griddle. Which I like that idea because it would be safer incase it spits or boils over a little then no big fire. Coleman makes a camp fire oven to stick on camp fires and wood burning stoves that would be perfect for griddle.
That's a good idea Jimmie, I don't have a camp fire stove yet but I want to get one. When I do I will give that a try. Thanks for the suggestion.
@@JohnnyBrunet 👍
You use a gas burner to heat up the iron pan before using it on the grill of you can place in under the grill where the burner is until you need it
The volcano collapsing is very realistic. A lot of times they do that in real life!
Ya mine fall over all the time but it's kind of fun. I was going to re shoot then I thought whatever this is more realistic. Thanks so much for watching!
“Think I’ll start my diet next week” my thoughts as wells

Never tried the griddle popcorn method, but I put butter in my oil on stove. That way the popcorn butters up as it pops
Oh that's a good idea I'm going to give it a try. Thanks for watching.
That sounds good, but does the butter burn at all?
@@webgem14 if you add oil then it will prevent the butter from burning.
@@webgem14 No.

My wife loves extra-cooked biscuits so I might have to try a direct cooking next time around.

Heat the grittle and the cast iron. At the same time.
Have you tried using a carbon steel pan instead of cast iron? They're a bit less massive and may heat up more quickly.
I have not but you're the second person to recommend that so I need to give it a try. Thanks for the suggestion.
Definitely appreciate the length of your videos. It doesn’t take 25 minutes to make a sandwich.
Hahaha thanks that was my thoughts exactly before I started making them. Then my first few videos were lie really long of me making 1 egg McMuffin and I realized I wouldn't even watch my own video all the way through 😂. So I changed them around and try to stick what's important and only throw in like one joke. I appreciate you watching.
A stainless steel pizza peel would slide right under the dome so you could flip it over and have all the popcorn in the dome!
That's a fantastic idea Mark. I will have to try that. I needed an excuse to get a pizza peel anyways. Figure I get that first then tell my wife "well we got the peel, might as well buy a pizza oven now!" 😂😂😂
Bout time to bust out my blackstone ... thanks for the tips.
You're welcome, thanks for watching.
I do my popcorn in deep, 10” round aluminum foil pan. I still use some to cover n when done, I just pickup the foil pan.
That's a great idea, thanks for sharing.
You make all these things with a griddle, even a griddle to make popcorn, but a microwave to melt butter. Got me thinkin.
Haha very good point. The griddle pop corn is just something fun to do after you've already used it and have it on, or a lot of people use these griddles at camp sites and it's really fun there especially with children. I'm certainly not pretending like it's something I do every night. I love some microwave popcorn and a movie or tv show. Can't beat that. Thanks for watching.
Can you put your microwave on the griddle and then do microwave popcorn so you get the best of both worlds? Sort of like you cook the microwave into the popcorn.
🤣🤣🤣 only one way to find out.
Use 151 for the volcano 👍
Ya I've heard that works well too. Thanks for watching.
The mason jar lid works the best....kinda a pain if you forget the spray....I've been using them for a long time now.....couldn't find and silicone deals so I found lids and I won't never use silicone
Ya Jay I forgot the spray once and it was a mess 😂😂. I e never used the silicone ones but I've heard mixed reviews. I have the Cuisinart metal egg rings too. Those work ok. Thanks for watching and for the tips.
We are all under the dome brother.
😂
What if you preheat the oil on the stove then transfer the cast iron pan to the griddle or carefully pour into the foil pan? 🤔
I've had a few people suggest that and I think that would be an easier way to do it. It would also be more dangerous lol but I still think it would be easier. Thanks for watching.
Where do you get that little done for the biscuits?

@@rickypalacios1554 that's great I'm glad the content has been helpful. If you ever have questions feel free to ask.
Ok...so, could you do the aluminum pan on one of those plug-in kitchen griddles? I would be afraid it would melt and burn down the house. Second, think you could use that movie theater butter coconut oil that makes homemade popcorn taste just like at the movies?
Ya I wouldn't do it inside I'd probably just use the stove. And I've never used the coconut oil but you're the second person to mention that to me this week so I am definitely going to try it. I'm sure it would work just fine as long as the oil gets hot enough. Thanks for watching Lloyd.
Preheat your cast iron pan in an oven saves a lot of time ✌️🤠
Great idea Lawrence!
You forgot about the Hack where you can actually Melt Butter on the Griddle! 🤯
Melt your butter on the griddle maybe in a pan until the water is boiled out and it stops bubbling. Melting butter in the microwave doesn’t remove the water and turns the popcorn soggy.
Thanks so much I did not know that. I appreciate the tip man.
This is the way.
@@mikeyfoofoo This is the way.

I'm wondering if you could give advice on propane or natural gas griddle
I've never used natural gas on a residential griddle but I know it's possible with some brands. I don't know if it would cook any better or more evenly but I gotta imagine it's cheaper and very convenient. If I had the ability to do it at my place I would definitely consider it.

it is just a large cast iron skillet for outside
Pretty much. Like one of those cast iron lodge griddles that you can put on the stove. The seasoning and upkeep is exactly like cast iron. The main benefit is it's a lot larger and like you said, it's outside. Which is great for keeping the kitchen clean. I haven't cooked bacon inside my house for two years and my wife is pretty happy about it. Thanks for watching John.
Griddles don't get hot enough for tepanyaki style fried rice, so I am trying to retro-fit mine to get the temps to 500+ sustained.
What brand do you have? Mine goes over 500 but I usually just cook my fried rice around 400 and it turns out fine.
Must not have a camp chef my FTG 900 hits that on low
Johnny I’ve got coconut oil that I use in my kettle popper. Can I use coconut oil on my griddle? I hope so, because it gives the true movie theater taste. Thanks bro!
Hey Scott, I've never used it but I have seen people use it before so I think your fine. I would just make sure to clean it and wipe off as much as you can when you're done. I'm going to have to give that a try.
