  • The lifting uchimata where you launch uke into the air is the popular form of uchimata but what if uke hops to the side to try to evade the technique? You can do what is called a ken-ken uchimata.

When done correctly, at least one of two things happens with ken-ken uchimata. As tori is spinning and hopping, either his lifting leg gradually 'ratchets' more and more under uke's leg until uke gets lifted from the mat, or tori's hopping outpaces uke's ability to keep up and uke falls/collapses. Sometimes it's a little of both.

Spectacular contact as always. Sensei Shintaro delivers straightforward instruction with great detail. I loved the part where you explained the mechanism behind the throw with George.

To me, the first option is judo at its best. It's also quite hard to do against someone actively resisting. But when it works, it feels effortless and awesome.

as an older, big guy I always thought uchimata was not in my cards, however ken ken is so easy and quick to pull off, and with a big guys momentum behind it becomes a tough throw to stop.

“Ken Ken” or “Can Can” (as in the line dancers who this technique imitates)

Sadly I am better with ken ken , the only doubt is that I was taught to pull in circle but then somebody told me to do it straight to the ground.

My coach says that lifting uchi-mata is alone right variant and ken-ken is wrong variant🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️
Ken-ken is more effective that lifting also you waist less recources
