How to cut in a wall to ceiling line, how to paint a straight line when cutting in.

- This is a close up look at cutting in a wall to ceiling line and how straight a paint line can be with a little practice. Don't forget the walls in this video are not smooth so it makes it a bit hard to get perfectly straight lines.

Thank you so much Im working as a painter but im new to all of these.. Just started 2 weeks ago and they already have me cut in straight lines, took you less than 2 minutes to do that.. it takes me about 20 minutes! I'll use your technique tomorrow.. Thank You!
Hope it works well for you, a room to cut in the top can take 5 to 20 minutes to do depending on room size.

Don’t care how good someone is at cutting in..it will never be as straight as a taped up line.
Thank you for not waisting time and jumping right into the information

That is a much better contrast video. Excellent straight line finish work. I would have explained to the non painter that by puddling the paint about a half inch below the line to be cut, that gravity will work for you. As I am cutting, I dip the brush down into the puddle and push it towards the ceiling in a controlled manner. I would also say that a good painter can cut in with both hands and left and right with a little practice. One thing shown but not talked about , was how you kept your hand perfectly still and your head perfectly still , staring at the cut line to ensure a perfect straight cut in every time. Only a Journey man tradesman with years of painting has this skill, and I can see in the video that you are what you claim, a Damn Good Painter. RH DSD

Was just wondering what you thought of the hea sprayers. Would it be a better choice for someone starting to spray because its supposed to cut overspray by over 50 percent . Any make or model recommendation? Thanks
I haven't tried one but they sound good, depends on how much use it will get and what you are painting will depend on what you need.

Nice video when your cutting in what side brush do u normally work with would be interested to see what you think about different brushes specially about hogs bristles for enamel ....
It will depend on what I'm cutting in but generally 2 1/2 inch or 3 inch. I haven't used a hog bristle brush for awhile now but for memory they do leave a smoother finish.
Thanks so much for your help xx

I wish I could cut as straight as you. Great job, you make it look so easy.
Thanks
It takes practice like anything else the more you do it the easier it becomes
Just practice with no paint first to get a little muscle memory going and don't go to slow, try and go as fast as the paint will let you, if it's to fast the line will break up to slow and you will get chunky and uneven lines the tip of the brush should be lightly resting into the corner this gives your shaky wrist some play without cocking it up think of it like a car shock soaking up the bumps
Best advice is just keep pushing your own confidence in yourself and you'll be there in no time
Nice one - exactly the way I do it. Cheers

Does that wall have texture? It looks like it has a horizontal type texture to it? I am trying to find unique texture ideas far off from the standard orange peels etc.
It does have a texture to it, its Hardie Plank with a wood grain texture. Just a little harder to cut in.

Great skills, I often find that the edge of the cornice which meets the wall is not always of a neat finish. The moulding of the cornice itself is usually very well finished so because of this I tend to paint the bottom edge of the cornice the same color as the wall . It's a little more time consuming ( my OCD) but it leaves a well defined line.
You can do that if you want, if I do a repaint and the under edge of the moulding has lots of wall paint on it then I will paint it to neaten things up.

Do you have paint on both sides of the brush or just the side you're putting on the wall ? That's an absolute insanely neat line
There is paint on both sides of brush, dip the brush as normal, the first pass of the brush should take a lot of paint off the brush.

Purdy brushes always for nice cut in professional... I recommend stiff purdy.. also you have too put a little bit water to the paint is fast cut in
The thicker the paint the stiffer the brush, that's why when using oil based paint the brush should be a bit stiffer.

If it’s been at least 2 years since the wall has been painted & dried in.
But you decide to re paint over with same paint colour, should you still back roll?
The reason why I’m re painting it again is because I had some wires pulled out from behind the wall because I’m getting a TV set up & had to paint over the Filler
Which was just a small section on the wall. However when I painted it over again with just a brush it has come of with a few marks & looks un even I did use sand paper before hand as well
You should have touched up the patched area with a primer/sealer first, this should stop the paint from coming off. Yes you should still back roll.

Purdy is a good brand.
Purdy is a good brand if you want a mediocre paint brush that lasts an eternity. Wooster alphas, silver tips, and proform Picassos are kick ass brushes that no purdy can compete with

Important question, when you cut in while overlapping the already rolled paint, does the paint look unmatched when it's dry in that overlapping area?
Sorry for my bad english
It's ok to roll then cut on first coat only but you must cut in before you roll final coat as the cutting in will stand out in most cases.

What about when the boundary between the wall and ceiling isn't actually straight but wonky and bumpy?? My cutting in skills on a nice straight boundary are good but when faced with a wonky one everything goes to shit! Any tips??
If I need to cut in between two rough surfaces or even just one I will always make sure I do a thin bead of gap sealant. Doing this will give you a smooth surface to cut into.

Do you roll walls first and then cut in
In this video it was first coat so it doesn't matter but with final coat you must cut in first.

So can u tell me this.. The paintbrush gives a different finish then the roller but since we paint the edge and roll on the walls how do u blend the two? Do I just bring the roller as close to the edge as possible? I think it will still show the separate textures so I'm a bit confused
sparkinglife 111 yes, bring it close. the one inch band isn't big enough to see unless you're looking for it.
mackhomie6 thank you
Yes roll as close to cutting in as possible and make sure the roll isn't loaded with paint or it will leave a think line.

The Taubmans paint I was using just wouldn't behave in the same way, it was thinner that the video. Not sure if I wasn't loading up my brush properly or the brush wasn't good enough.
A good brush helps and thinner paint would make it easier so most likely the brush.

hey mate, good videos. im a painter over here in canada. just wondering what brushes you use
in Australia?, I use mostly purdy and wooster here. but i like trying out different tools of the trade.
Newff Boii Hello fellow brush brother. I'm a painter down in Florida. Anywho I use Corona and Picasso brushes for interior and Wooster and Purdy for exterior. The coronas are the best brushes I will ever use. The tynex Orel and Chinex 2.5 angle is a beast. The 3" Cody I can rip thru 6 panel doors with. The picasso is great for thick heavy paints like cashmere ext. Let me know if you try them!
Thanks buddy!, i use purdy most of the time. i like the XL Elite 3" flat brush.. and use the XL angled for trim and detail work. Ive also used a lot of Corona's, wooster's and piccaso.
Newff Boii Cool that's awesome!! I use Purdy's on exteriors 2.5 and 3" angle glides, along with Wooster's and switched to Coronas for inside.
So it's okay to get a little ceiling white on the walls & then cut in the walls ?... I have been trying to cut in the ceilings too & to avoid getting ceiling white on the walls :( Am I making it hard for myself ?
David Lomm absolutely no worries getting a little lid paint on the walls that's how its done so you only have to cut in the wall depending on color you may have to 2 coat your cut line
Whats best bush for cutting
The one i'm using is a Rota Cota excl 63 mm or 2 1/2 inch.

is this leaving a bead - or a raised line of paint - the length of the cut-in? I find that I often have those unless I remove more paint from the brush, and then I am really not putting on enough paint and have to cut in twice. is the raised line of paint acceptable? can you see it once it's dry?
mackhomie6 ...the cuts should be done first and feathered out and 2 coats is standard with any professional application....
The raised line as you call it shouldn't be too big or it might be seen. It will level out a little and it will be on the cut in line so it shouldn't be a real issue.

cut ins on first coat can be done after rolling walls but final cut in should always be done before rolling final coat.

Deric' Anslum you can't feather out out the line where the two colors meet. There are certainly instances where you would find yourself only doing a single coat.
