    Currently renovating a 1934 home we just bought. The edges are so bumpy. My dad was amazing at caulking. Did it in his career for years. I got a bit of his skill lol but the playing off before caulking is a LIFESAVER. I don't usually tape bc I can cut in really quickly and straight with a paintbrush. Dang I can't wait to get over to the house and try this!

      Nice job man, this is the only way to achieve a true straight line of caulk, and it is fast too. As you are an dry waller, can I ask why my painwork has cracked on my dry wall (dot and dab) I have done 3 coats of dulux trade supermatt watered right down, sanding and filling in-between. I have managed to sort the mess of dinks all over the walls, and have achieved a perfectly flat finish, but, the paint has tiny hairline cracks everywhere. I'm not worried because I will be painting vinyl matt on ceiling and dulux endurance on walls for finish coats, so the plastic shouldn't crack (he say's) but I would just like to know why my supermatt has cracked? I'm wondering if the cowboys who did the dry wall job didn't prime the walls properly, if I maybe didn't water down the paint enough, or possibly the water itself has contaminated the paint? I am probably going to pick some floetrol up tomorrow as I am maybe being cheap using water to thin?

      Or If you have the accent wall color that is not getting painted and then you could do the same thing with the accent wall color instead of caulking which will plug up any gaps and guarantee that you will not have white cock showing in those gaps on the untouched wow that isn't going to be painted

    Good advice almost. You should've painted the caulking immediately, then pull your tape. That caulking left unpainted will yellow over time, and it doesn't look good. I've done it both ways.

      They make fast dry caulk that can be painted over in 20 minutes. Many paint stores and Home Depot has Alex fast dry caulk. Leaving it raw will discolor while the ceiling stays white.

      @@johnbelvin5216 Chuck is right. Usually you don't want to paint over wet caulking, but it works great in this application and is a common trick among painters. The line comes out cleaner when it can cleanly seperate the wet material vs the slight tearing you get once it's dried (as it's essentially ripping the thin overlap).

    • @johnbelvin5216
      @johnbelvin5216 3 роки тому +1

      @@coltonmccormack8978 no Chuck is not right and you're not right either.. okay you go ahead and paint over wet caulking you dumbass. Caulk should be dry when it's painted over to leave a skin of color paint over top of the caulk, and when you brush wet caulk
      it can knock the line of caulk out of smoothness,learn how to paint. Simple point is you don't paint over a wet caulk.. ever. When caulk dries,water evaporates out and the caulk shrinks a bit, if you have wet paint over it it can make hairline cracks in the paint.

    So am I correct in thinking you matched the caulk to the ceiling color and did not have to cover the caulk with the white ceiling color paint? Seems I’ve seen this hack using a clear caulk that had to be painted over with either the wall or ceiling color.

    My dad was a professional painter, and he could cut a straight, level line mid wall if need be. Me. fair, but on texture, it does become more difficult. I started painting the wall first, then taped and sheeted with plastic, then sprayed the ceiling. Looks nice, but much more work. Like this approach. What do you think of applying the caulking before painting, then spraying/rolling the ceiling, then cut in with the wall color?

    Hi. What kind of caulk (or is that the same as sealant. Should I get a sealant instead?) should I tell the staff at the hardware store for the gap between the ceiling and the wall (no molding) for the bathroom (dirt keep falling from the gaps in the bathroom especially) and between the wall and floor (to minimize critters like ants from coming in).
    Thank you in advance.

    This is definitely quicker than the method I am going to try tomorrow. I have flat ceiling white stomped ceiling and darker color satin finish walls. I've cut-in a few sections of wall but even with a fairly steady hand I am not satisfied with my cut. What I plan to do, although it will take longer, is to run the darker wall paint slightly on to the ceiling edge. After drying I will apply painters tape to the satin finish wall (it won't peel satin paint off, but it sure does flat ceiling white!). Then I will take a 1/2" to 1" wide artist brush and apply an application of ceiling white on to the taped line to get my "white" cut-in. PS- I am retired so I have the time to be anal about my painting. DO ANY OF YOU SEMI-PROS THINK THIS WILL WORK WELL? Thanks for your responses.

    • @PaulPeck
      @PaulPeck  5 років тому

      Hi Teddy, that sounds like a plan.👍🏻 Here’s another trick for ya: If you dry brush the paint over the edge of the tape first and let that dry. That will seal the tape so your cut in will not bleed through the tape creating a nice straight cut line when you peel the tape!et me know how it goes. Thanks so much for watching and subscribing!😎 -Paul

    When do you paint? That works if your doing a bright white ceiling but what about if we want to darker opposing colors on adjoining walls? Do you paint immediately after you caulk, then pull the tape?

    • @PaulPeck
      @PaulPeck  7 років тому +4

      Hey Shawn, What I would do if you're not doing a white ceiling. I would do a super tight bead of caulk without using any tape before you do any painting. Then paint your ceiling as first. Next place the blue painters tape on the ceiling along the corner where the ceiling intersects with the wall. Now take your cut brush and just barely put any paint on your brush (dry brush) and just paint along the tap. Try not to pile up any paint in the corner or on the tape (this will seal the tape so that on your next coat the paint won't bleed thru the tape leaving you with a nice straight cut line when you pull the tape). Immediately after you do your second cut in, pull the tape off of the ceiling while the cut in is still wet. Then finish rolling out the second coat on the walls. Hope this helps and let me know if you have any more questions. Take care, -Paul

    Why not just caulk the ceilings edges after the first coat...let it dry over night and cut in the walls with a straight line the next day? That caulk will dry a different colour to the white and will be noticeable after a day or 2 doing it this way

      That's exactly what I did in (Part 2) of this video. ua-cam.com/video/tHW1qWPW5b8/v-deo.html But you can get away with doing a very fine bead of caulk without doing the second coat. You can't see any color variation from the white caulk color to the ceiling paints white color. If you could I would not do this technique. -Paul

      I'll definitely try it, I searched this out and found several methods, some good (like this one) some horrible; caulk, let it dry, tape, paint, let it dry, another coat of dried paint, then slice through all that with a box cutter. I also like the tape then clear caulk, wipe most of it off and paint while its all wet pull off the tape. I'm a handyman so I have to paint a lot, and need all the tricks I can get. Great for getting the money and a first impression BUT it will CRACK in 5 years and become crooked you may prolong the life by PAINTING over the Caulk that's WHY you're using "paintable" Caulk. A real Painter like myself uses an ultra stiff brush and can go around that room in 30 minutes then make corrections in 15 minutes by hand and warranties his work for 10 years this is what they do in new construction. That's why my biz is Thriving. I fix that crap by hand left and right straighter than any tape line. But great for a diyer.
