- WILD CAMPING On THE ROCKS - testing out the Jack Wolfskin Skyrocket 2 Dome I Peak District Wild Camp
Hi everyone, I'm out solo wild camping again this time in the Peak District and I'm testing out some near camping gear including the Jack Wolfskin Skyrocket II Dome tent. The Osprey Atmos AG 65 backpack continues to perform really well and it was just so great to be out and about again in such a stunning location at The Roaches or 'The Rocks'.

Have you got a new tent or new bit of kit that works well? I would love to hear from you and many thanks for clicking on my video.
Hit a like on the video and subscribe if you’re new to the channel, it would really help me out. Take care everyone, Si 🏔 🏕
My new bit of kit this week is an Optimus wind shield that clips on to the gas canister. Much neater than my previous folding aluminium one. The Optimus one packs away neatly around my titanium pot.
@@mikelovesbacon thanks Mike, it sounds excellent. If you’re buying stuff weekly then you’re the same as me! 😂
Great spot Simon. Bet your glad to be out and about again hey. All the best mate.
Thanks man, hope things are well down under? All the best, Si
Good to see you enjoying that. I Like the Jack Wolfskin Tent. I have a couple of their micropile fleeces and a fantastic 30 ltr day pack, Heading over to check out that tent on t'internet now. Cheers Si.
Nice one Trevor, thanks for watching mate. All the best, Si
Cool video again mate, the views were stunning 👍
Thanks Colin, I hope you're well mate, Si
Fantastic video Si 👏🏻👌🏻👌🏻
Loved the sunset and the tent looks really cool cant wait to see your review on it.
Looked like a really good spot tbf glad you had a great time!
Thanks so much for sharing and showing us your camp 😊🏕👍🏻✌🏼
ATB... Chris
Thanks for watching Chris, I hope you have a great time at Shining Tor if you're heading that way. Cheers, Si
@@SimonOutdoors Thanks mate!
Cracking evening and sunset there mate! Perfect camping weather
Love the peaks
Thanks for sharing
Ash
Thanks mate :)
You captured some stunning views, the sunset & sunrise was amazing. Loved the time-lapse xx
Thank you :) did Bane watch?! 🐶 Xx
Nice one Simon back in the peaks , you had a great night by the looks of it great sunset and then sunrise . New tent looks roomy and solid atb Dave
Cheers Dave, great evening and the new tent held up well. Take care mate, Si
Lovely video and channel,thankyou debs.
Thanks Debs, appreciate you taking time to watch, Si
Perfect place to set up, beautiful sunrise and sunset. Nice one mate. 👍
Thanks mate, when are you out next?
@@SimonOutdoors Hopefully next weekend. I love it mate. Have a great weekend.
The sun gave some great lighting to your video...looks like a nice getaway especially during these times!
It was amazing Michelle, thanks for watching :) Si
Like the tent a fantastic video
Many thanks Steve mate, Si
Fab sunset & sunrise Simon. The tent looks great. Lovely video. 🙌
Thanks Julia, really enjoyed this one. I hope you're well, Simon
It's nice up on the Roaches on a clear day. It was a cold night, I felt it up on Kinder. Glad you anjoyed it and I like the look of your tent. 👍
Thanks for watching mate, much appreciated. Love the new tent, particularly as it was a freebie! Atb, Si
New here Simon, great video! That sunrise was to die for, unreal! Great view, and a great camp. Overall great video, thanks for sharing. Will be sticking round all the best!
Cheers mate, appreciate you taking time to watch and comment. All the best, Si
Hi mate.Snugpak Army bottoms brings back so many memories haha. Great views. Sitting in hotel before home tomorrow. Isle of Arran was amazing. Hopefully our videos are editing next few days.
Enjoy your weekend mate 👍👌🏻
Will look forward to watching it mate. Would love to do a camp on Arran, all the best. Si
Nice one Simon, glad you didn't get moved on, the Peak District is my local area and the landowners have been a pain in the arse for moving wild campers on. Great upload
Cheers Steve, sad to hear. It sounds like I was fortunate, has it happened to you? Si
@@SimonOutdoors it's not happened to me but I haven't been out for a while, I'm hopefully going out Saturday, but avoiding the hot spots like the plague. Luckily being from here I know the Peaks really well.
@@steveharrison1765 I hope it goes well Steve, I'm sure you will be fine and as you say you know the area really well. All the best
This mornings breakfasted was a tin of baked beans & sausage, plus a small tin of whole tomatoes & a pitta bread finished of with tea.
Sounds lovely Diane :)
Nice one Simon 👍..... great video.... Tent looks like the cats whiskers 👍👍👍
Thanks Robert, the cats whiskers! 😂 that’s a twist on the usual saying. All the best mate, Si
Great video Simon. What an amazing place to camp overnight. Thanks for sharing your experience mate 👍
Many thanks for watching Andy, have a great weekend. Simon
@@SimonOutdoors You too Simon 👍
Great camp mate, been the same spot a few times now, its only 30mins from my doorstep, there's a nice stop on top of Hen Cloud, also a nice spot on the back end of the rocks next to Doxy Pool, but Jennie might come knocking, she gets lonely mate 🤣👍
Need all the attention I can get 😂😂 thanks mate 👍🏻
Ohh yeeaahh awesome si
Ooooooshhhh! Haha cheers mate
Beautiful sunset there in a lovely rocky area and the tent is looking spot on 👌
Thanks mate, it’s working well :) take care, Si
How bizarre! I was going to stop in the Roaches the same night, but opted for Shining Tor instead. Glad you enjoyed it, it's on my doorstep 👍😃
Nice one Paul, I almost saw you then mate. I hope you had a good time. Thanks for watching, Si
Hi Paul... I nearly camped at Shining Tor last weekend but ended up changing location due to something. Does Shining Tor get busy with people coming to watch sunrises as its only a very short walk from some car parks? Would you say a week day is better than a weekend for Shining Tor?
Thanks so much bud hope you had a good one 👍🏻🏕
@@theheightoflife there were a couple of photographers, a couple and then a family walked by. I stayed on the top so did wait a little longer for them to go but there are spots away from the main rocks if you wanted to set up earlier. Cats tor is a stones throw away as well if it does get busy
@@paultownley5825 Ahh awesome thanks so much for your help and reply 🙏🏼😊👍🏻👍🏻
Hope you enjoy your bank holiday weekend 😃🏕⛰🍻
ATB... Chris
I did Shining Tor in Dec, the temp went down to -10. Brilliant it was.
You looked so pleased to be out again. Lovely video 🙂👍
I was very happy :) thanks for watching mate 👍🏻
top video again simon. looked a great place , no wardens bother you. stay safe fella 👍
Thanks Jason, it sounds like I got a bit lucky Re the wardens. All the best mate, Si
@@SimonOutdoors cheers mate
thinking of buying this tent only me and my little dog
It’s a great tent so far mate, link in description if you want more details. Have a great weekend 👍🏻
Nice one Simon, fantastic night. One of my first walks was along the Roaches in the early 80s and about the only school boy navigational errror Ive made was getting lost in winter in fog along there.😂
👍🌞⛺
Cheers Dave, that’s amazing. These places don’t change much I would imagine. Navigational error! I’ve def been there! Take care mate, Si
Nice one buddy, looks like a stunning place. You can never appreciate how amazing it is through video, but it still looks great 👍🏻 I did think you were walking a bit gingerly, I must of missed your last video where you hurt your ankle!? I’ll have to catch up on it.
Thanks George, it's a recurrence of an old issue but on the mend now! Have a great weekend ahead mate and thanks for watching, Si
Looks like you picked a cracking spot. Well done
Thanks James, it was a great spot. Take care mate, Si
I've been overseas wild camping again, this time in Jersey. Currently if you're on the UK mainland you will have to quarantine for 2 weeks. But since I live in Guernsey I didn't. Weather warm, the morning wasn't as cold as my last trip.
That's great Diane, glad it's getting a bit warmer for you. Which sleeping bag are you using? Apologies as I may have asked you this! Thanks for watching, Si
@@SimonOutdoors last night I used a Decathlon 3 season + a fleece liner.
@@dianekivi5349 brilliant Diane :)
I have a Jack Wolfskin Yellowstone II two man tent, it on the heavy side but is bombproof for base camp/ car camping.
That's great Tony, I do really like this one. It feels strong and good quality Si
I don't know how you keep your vids so short. Very disciplined Simon. Stunning view, I was cold the whole time in the peaks mainly... apart from my hike up 🤣 did you clock the wild camp spots on the A57 on the way in? Some cracking places not as far as Bamford etc... My tent was dry too. Although it started to drizzle a little. Lee
Was south west mate so I didn't touch the A57 - went via Leek. Will do a bit more research around the area, it's so nice! I try to keep it moving a bit in the video so it's less boring! Looking forward to your video mate assuming you shot it? Cheers, Si
@@SimonOutdoors You'll be bored 🤣😂 wait for the shorter edit after this one 😂🤣
@@BurtonOutdoors 😂😂 may have to rant!
Was up the Roaches last weekend with @thetrailographer and was amazing. You got yourself a good pitch!
Nice one Pete, thanks for watching mate. Did you get some good pics? Cheers, Si
Great video, my friend! Enjoyed watching your trip, your bushcraft skills are terrific! And the surrounding nature is amazing. Cheers from Russia, Simon, and welcome to my channel about Russian bushcraft tips and secrets! Kind regards, Yuriy!
Awesome location, views, sunset and sunrise. I think we can tell you probably enjoyed that, lol. I bet Jenny was pleased for the company 🙂
Thanks man, it was brilliant. Are you heading out soon? Thanks for watching, Si
@@SimonOutdoors Did 28 miles last weekend with a wild camp in the middle, great to be out and looking forward to more.
@@bigearsbridge4732 Nice one mate, incredible distance. Glad you had a good one
Hi Simon. Cracking sunset👍 The tent does look quality! The only thing I'm not mad about is the inner pitch first design. Great to be out again though, isn't it? 😁
Thanks mate, I’m with you on that but I love all of the other qualities. Have a great weekend :)
Looks awesome I'm considering this tent to bet out there, gone cuckoo in lockdown, at 7.22 was that a plabe going over or a shooting star? Upper to the right. Best wishes, subscribed. Kerp up the awesome work
Thanks Andre, appreciate it mate. The tent is fantastic. It was a plane! Time lapse sped it up. Great spot! Hope you can get out soon 👍🏻 Si
I did my first (solo) wild camp in that exact spot last autumn. Such a great location 😍
Great spot isn’t it Natalie, have you been back since? Si
@@SimonOutdoors no, it’s the only wild camp I have done and I’m desperate to go again but I’ve bottled it 😩. Might head to to the Peak District at the weekend to look for prospective wild camp spots!
@@nataliewebb4243 go for it Natalie, I’m sure you will enjoy it and I still reckon it’s safer than sleeping in a house! Good luck 👍🏻
So.....would you describe it as a sexy tent? 😄😄. Anyway one thing that really comes across is you really do enjoy these adventures, looks like you had a blast!! Keep up the good work buddy 👍
We've all got fetishes mate, no need to shame people 😂
@@mikelovesbacon 😂😂
YOU are a sexy beast mate 😉 thanks for watching buddy 👍🏻 take care, Si
I like the wild camping covered on your channel. But most of my wild camping has been on the fringes of urban areas.
This is because of the lack of hostels & reasonably priced camp sites. Sometimes I've used chilled meals, cooked on a camp Stove. Hint add a little water, it improves taste & prevents burning onto pot!
Thanks Diane, that makes sense. Good tip too ☺️
Great video, what a beautiful place, I am considering buying the Skyrocket 2 myself. Which sleeping pad and bag do you use?
Great Karsten, I do love this tent! I use the Rab Neutrino XL and thermarest neoair xlite. How about you? Thanks for watching, Si
I had a Jack Wolfskin tent in the late 80's and only recently stopped using it when it finally died! Great bit of kit and should give you many years good service👍
Great to know mate, thanks for watching. It’s brilliant so far 👍🏻 what do you use now?
Currently using a Naturehike Cloud-up 2 which I'm really impressed with considering it was cheap.
@@rowdy6743 good choice mate :)
Im getting put off my helm 2 tbh the amount of condensation all the time pisses me off so I will be looking at a different tent soon...
great vid mate
Thanks mate, good luck with the new purchase when it arrives. I do like this one here, cheers Si
Great video! Would you go with this tent or the Naturehike Cloud Peak 2?
Hi mate, I really like this one. The Cloud Peak 2 may be a bit lighter but the quality on this is excellent. Good luck with your search mate, Si
Another great video Simon! I’m a beginner to wild camping and on the taller side so just ordered the Helm 2 Compact off your recommendation. (Back in stock today for those interested).
Which Summit To Eat meals are your favourite?
Cheers Will, good luck with it mate. I'm not a huge fan tbh. I think they are popular because of the weight and the curry is pretty good. I love Decathlon hydrated meals at the moment, the curry and beef and mash both taste great. Cheers, Si
Great vid si, lovely location and nice length vid, not too long or short, tent looks similar to MSR elixir, but MSR has 2 doors, ps drop the shorts and leggings look bud, really not a good look 😄🤙🏻
Cheers Adam, thanks for watching mate. Great fashion tip 😂 actually I have rectified this! Love this tent, don’t mind the one door as it’s less complicated 👍🏻
Nice video. 4 weeks until end of year exams and then I will be able to enjoy a beer on the edge of the world. Did you say you do not like IPA?
Nice one Ivan, good luck with the exams. I enjoy an IPA, in fact I just bought one. Just of late I've got a bit bored of the strong taste :) Thanks for watching mate, Si
I have this tent. wery good ventilation and build
Agree mate, built quality is superb. Thanks for watching, Si
Looks like a really good tent. Still trying to find my holy grail tent but this is a candidate. I was really interested in the new Sea to Summit tents until I saw Haze Outdoors' video :(
It looks fragile doesn’t it Mike? This one is great so far, heavy but the quality is fantastic. Cheers, Si
I camped up derwent on Sunday night and it was -2 so yeah I feel you on the cold one 😂👍I have just invested in an insulated inflatable mat so hopefully that will improve the warmth of my kit haha another smashing video 👍 nice work atb justkarl_outdoors
Thanks mate, the insulated mat will help you out no end. -2 is really cold! Take care, Si
utiful camp Simon. That tent looked fairly easy to put up, Any issues with the pegs? oh and that sunset time lapse was spot on.
Many thanks :) No issues with the pegs, they are the older / cheaper style but seem very strong. Are you looking at a new tent? Thanks for watching, Si
@@SimonOutdoors no not looking for a new one, just for new spots and to camp on rocks would be nice, I would just worry about the pegs not inserting properly. 😊
@@Wanderwithvickers that makes sense, they were a little tough to get fully in here however they did feel very secure. There was little to no wind. :)
Sunset was unreal Si 👀
Thanks Matt, it was incredible 👍🏻
Yep jack wolfskin gear is quality, liking that tent mate , I've looked at it myself a few times , it was £55 on Amazon once , can't believe I didn't buy it at that price , don't know why it went so low, good camp and video mate ATB 🏕️👍
That’s amazing, wasn’t aware of that mate. You would make a killing now I’ve you’d bought then. Thanks for watching mate, your JW tent looks handy too 👍🏻
@@SimonOutdoors it was a while ago , should of bought a few and made a profit 🏕️😂👍, unless it was a pricing mistake. I'd just bought a tent at the time so didn't buy it, missed opportunity. Take care ATB 👍🏕️
I'm wild camping in Guernsey again. I'm experimenting with food from supermarkets, rather than camping food. This is partly availability, I'm a vegy, there's only 1 vegy option @ the camping shop.
Good idea :) I’m thinking of getting away from the traditional stuff myself
Wolfie Rules haha
I used to live in the Peaks and its a wonderful place. But in the lower peaks the Wardens are out kicking people off the hill
I've heard the news, hopefully it's a short term measure mate and we can all enjoy the land respectfully. Many thanks for watching, Si
I'm liking the tent too, but I'm concerned that the length is not enough for me. I'm 190cm. What do you think?
I think you would be ok mate, I'm closer to 195cm and although my feet did touch you can lie across. Still plenty of room and excellent value. Si
@@SimonOutdoors Thanks mate! I'm going for it
@@sh6997 good luck!
Always arrive as it going dark, leave early in the morning.
Find a spot hidden away. Never wild camp near a pub, especially on a Friday or Saturday night.
👍🏻👍🏻
Good to see you didn't have one of the much reported wardens on quad bikes turning up in the middle of the night to turf you off the land. A worrying trend indeed.
Thanks mate, do you think it’s common? Hopefully not and people can still enjoy themselves while ensuring to LNT
