    Thanks Mollie, a really helpful overview. I just purchased a Seagate 4tb external hard drive which comes with a free one year subscription on Mylio Premium, mainly to use as a backup for my hobby in photography, which Is well organised within file explorer. My iPhone photos on the other hand are all over the place and I’m always close to running out of storage on my iPhone, so it would be good to get this sorted into one library. I’m hoping to keep my hobby photos separate from my iPhone photos, so thanks again for the review, I just need to get started now! Eric

    Thanks for this very helpful video. I will be looking for more on this topic if you have more. Can you create folders under folders (like a hierarchy). For example, maybe I want to keep a folder for grandkids and then under that I want sub-folders for Susie, Tommy, Bobby, etc.

    Can one SIMPLY rename folders by date?
    So, I had a program on a camera that downloaded into a new folder named by date. Then I could add words in the name, such as location or people. LOVED THAT. SO EASY TO SEARCH.
    I have lost that option- was older digital by Canon.

    • @Pixologie
      @Pixologie  Рік тому

      Hi Zola - Yes . . . you can rename the folders. It's easy! Do you use a Mac or a PC? Just rename the folder (right click on the folder for PC) with the formula: YYYY-MM-DD Description
      Example
      2022-08 August Photos
      2022-08-15 Family Reunion
      Etc.

    I've just seen your review of Movavi, thanks a lot for your videos have been quite help for me, I'm trying to organize about 20k pictures from 7+ years ago, I would like to preserve them I don't really trust On digital storage so, do you think the CD is the best option to keep it safe? or is there a better way to preserve it?

    • @Pixologie
      @Pixologie  Рік тому +1

      Hi Sergio - We recommend having the photos saved in organized folders on your computer, then backed up to an external hard drive. CDs are no longer considered good storage and I don't recommend using them at all. Many computers don't even come with a CD drive anymore. We love using Forever Permanent Storage to upload our folders of photos into albums in our account. The company is private and when you purchase storage, they guarantee to migrate your photos to the newest technology for your lifetime plus 100 years. Thank you for your videos! I've been wanting to look for this kind of help for a long time.
    I haven't found yet, your thoughts on labeling. It seems to me that I should have a big picture plan, but I'd like to learn from your experience. It make sense to me to upload and sort pictures by years/decades, and then create subfolders by family branches. Then use albums to create groupings of individuals, or events etc. Does that make sense? I heard you suggest that you create a folder labeled "scanned photos" but that seems to create a side folder that's not in my structure. Am I right about that? Also, are there other tips for naming? AND, does Mylio help with naming, dating, and locating photos as you upload them? The photos from my iphone will have date and location data attached. Does that transfer?
    Thanks! Cathie

    What cloud do you recommend? Can you look at these photos you put onto Mileo on your phone as well somehow? How do you automate your external hard drive so what's on Mileo goes straight into it? When it goes into your hardrive is it viewable just like in Mileo or do you just have a jumbled mess of photos? Can you use Mileo to go paperless by photographing every paper and old picture instead of scanning or is better to scan those things.

    • @Pixologie
      @Pixologie  Рік тому

      Hi January - I recommend organizing photos before using a cloud storage or photo management program. It's easier to find duplicates and to manage overall. Here's a video on organizing your photos once and for all using the system we use at Pixologie:
      ua-cam.com/video/e58WlgnAFTM/v-deo.html
      In the video, I explain also how you can scan photos (after they are organized) so that you can upload to Forever, our recommended cloud storage solution.
      Mylio works great but it is an advanced photo management program and requires routine use to keep familiar with it. It has the program on your computer and an app for your phone.

I need help how to gather all pictures that he is in the photos. Please give me clear instruction if this is possible. In google photo when you identify the facial of an individual, all phots he or she is in it collected in one location and then you can save it as a folder or album. Is it possible in my limo?

    This Mylio thing looks very promising. At least the UI is nice - it's definitely made while keeping use cases in heads. I wonder how exactly does it store all the albums / folders / faces? I hope it's not just another proprietary closed black box, so when you decide to make a move from it, you won't loose all this structure

    • @Pixologie
      @Pixologie  2 роки тому +1

      Hi there - If you work in the Folders view, it's straight forward in terms of structure on your computer. You can access the folders in Pictures/Mylio/... however all of your edits and changes are stored as XMP files. So. . . if you want the photos out of Mylio someday, you would need to export them with the changes/metadata etc. Hoping this makes sense! I highly recommend important folders that are cleaned up and in good shape before starting. Cheers!

    Do you recommend the photo stick to gather photos from all over your computer? And do you recommend Mylio over Forever?

    • @Pixologie

      Hi Kathy - I usually find that the photo stick doesn't solve the underlying problem of being able to properly organize, deduplicate and preserve. Here's a video on the steps I usually teach people to get started.
      ua-cam.com/video/-I6A5cgwqkQ/v-deo.html
      I think Mylio is great but it is a program with many advanced features. The learning curve is high. Forever is much easier to maintain with the side benefits of long term preservation and ability to order prints, books, etc and share easier. I hope this was helpful!

    Hello Mollie, I have recently discovered your channel and I loved it! Thank you, very nice information. I have a couple of questions for you:
    1. On another video about photo organization you recommended Forever. Now, here, you reco Milio. Which one is your favorite and why?
    2. When we are syncing the cellphone with these kind of apps, how do you get rid of all the garbage the cellphone accumulates with the whatsapp groups? Right now, I am syncing everything photos and videos with google drive, but so I also have a zillion Gb in garbage and it's so annoying! Thanks for your answers. Warms regards, Lina

    • @Pixologie
      @Pixologie  Рік тому

      Hi Lina - Thank you so much for watching. This Mylio video is a little older. For people who are going to work with their photos weekly and use the program often, I think Mylio is great. However, your photos should be cleaned up before importing them into Mylio.
      See this video where I explain our whole system:
      ua-cam.com/users/livee58WlgnAFTM?feature=share
      2. Do you use an Android phone? I think going in and deleting often is very important! Do you know how to do this? I don't work routinely with whatsapp so I cannot help much in this regard yet.
      Let me know if any of this helps!
      Cheers!

    Oh, I have another question: can a family member/friend add to my library with their own Mylio account. Or is it only for one person to add photos? For instance, I would like my spouse to be able to upload their pictures to the library from their own iPhone. Can they do that or what software can?

    • @Pixologie
      @Pixologie  3 роки тому

      Mylio is device based not user dependent. So you can have multiple people’s devices syncing to the same computer. The trick will be to manage the work floor in organizing the pictures within Mylio… The company does have tutorials to use Mylio. I think that’s a bit of an advanced thing to do is have two people putting pictures into the Mylio library on a computer. If you do this I really recommend that you are working in the program routinely like weekly to keep up on managing the pictures. I.e. eliminating unnecessary pictures, processing facial recognition adding tags etc. So remember, it’s not uploading to Mylio it’s syncing to your main computer where you have your library stored. Does that make sense?

  • @robinfetter8961
    @robinfetter8961 2 роки тому

    Hi. I am brand new to your channel and actually brand new to this whole idea of scanning and organizing pictures. Initially, I thought I had about 300 pictures (actual hard copies) and thought I would just start scanning them with my HP scanner. My cousin suggested I purchase a high quality photo scanner and the Epson Perfection V600 arrived just the other day. What I didn't realize at the time was that I actually have stored 8 huge containers of pictures that go back as far as the 1920's. Then I found boxes of slides, negatives, cd's of photos and then actual film. After reviewing some of your absolutely informative UA-cam videos, I then realized that I have photos in our phones, google photos, amazon photos, apple photos and then a set of six cd's that I had transferred from my parents life, travels etc. OMG!
    My question is that when I scan them with the Epson Perfection V600 scanner, where does it go? Is the scanner just the tool to bring the photo digital and then you need to put it in a program like Mylio? I installed Adobe Bridge and all the pictures I have on my laptop went into BR. But that is not a problem as I have not started to do anything with them. I have a lot of manual work before the scanning begins like categorizing them into folders and files physically. Also, can you recommend how I can transfer old movie films into this project? Thank you.

    • @Pixologie
      @Pixologie  2 роки тому

      Hi - glad you found my channel! What a treasure trove you have! When you scan with the Epson, you'll want to create a folder "Scanned Photos" and then create subfolders for each batch of photos. I would also name your photos the same as the folder so to keep the system simple.
      Are you using Mac or PC? If Mac, your finder is very important and if PC, you'll use File Explorer to work with your photos.
      Both Bridge and Mylio can view the folders you set up on your computer. Its your preference on which to use. Bridge - any metadata changes are saved directly to the photo. With Mylio, your changes have to be exported with the photo to be viewed outside of Mylio.
      You will need to find a film transfer company to digitize your old reels of film. You may have a local camera shop that can do it, or you might send it out.
      We are Forever ambassadors which you might have seen. They have a nice system to send you a shipping kit for your film. Here's a link for their website: www.forever.com/ambassador/pixologieinc/digital-conversion (Use code TIMETOBLOOM for 30% off).
      Hope this all helps!

    Good explanation of how to organize one's photos, but I wish you would go into the second half - searching, using your organized photos. Part of the tool should be the ability to find images quickly. So how well does Mylio do for searching? For example, you have a memory of your husband shoveling snow with the dog trying to catch the snow. Can Mylio find that image?

    • @Pixologie
      @Pixologie  2 роки тому

      Hi Jeffrey - Yes, I love your suggestion and might incorporate this into my reviews for 2022. Searching is important . . . but you have to take the time (currently) to add descriptions and tags to find those photos in some photo organizing programs including Mylio.
      In Google Photos, Apple Photos or Dropbox, you can search by "dog" or "snow" and those images may come up depending upon the quality of photo. This is involves automatic digital information processing and artificial intelligence which I think is more and more going to be a big part of working with photos in the future.
      It's currently a tradeoff of where your photos are stored. . . with a big tech cloud service or on your computer where your images stay private and in your control. Apple Photos is a better solution if you are a Mac user.
      Hope this helps!

    Hi, and Great video ! One Question ... How does the 25% off code work? The Mylio software is a subscription based program (if over 5000 pictures/videos). One of the things I like about my Mac's Photos app is that the albums are not mutually exclusive with the master database of photos, nor of other albums. That is, any photo I import is in the master database. I can put it in multiple albums, without removing it from the master DB and without making added copies. I've found that this is not always the case with all programs. For instance, Amazon Photos seems to only allow a photo to be in one location. If I put it in an album, then select it in that album and delete it, it is completely gone from Amazon Photos. And, if in one album, I can't put it in another without deleting and re-uploading. How does Mylio handle these issues?

    • @Pixologie
      @Pixologie  2 роки тому

      Hi there - with Mylio, you have an Albums view and a Folders view (in addition to a calendar view). Photos can exist in multiple albums but only one Folder. I tend to store my photos in Folders and then use Albums for special topics where I want to group photos. Hoping this makes sense!

      Hi Mark - I sure hear you! I hate subscriptions but the nice thing is the software does auto update. As far as I can tell, Mylio is the best. Magix (www.magix.com/us/photo-graphic/photo-manager-deluxe/) is a purchase, but I haven't tested it. It does look a little bit older to me. Do you use a Mac or PC? And, how many photos do you have?
      (Sorry for the late reply!)

    • @Pixologie

      Hi Nanette - In Mylio, you can drag a photo onto the map, and I would imagine this would add a GPS coordinate. I haven't done to much work with location on photos since there is so much to do with the pictures already. Let me know if you can see how this works.

      Hi Fabio! Mylio requires 8GB of RAM, however 16GB is recommended. If you have a huge collection with video included, the higher ram helps a lot.

      @@Dr.HarshTruth OK… That is not a lot of storage space. I’m in the same situation sort of with my MacBook Pro which has 256 GB. My photos take up 130 GB which is half of the space and makes my MacBook Pro slow… I feel like if you’re only using a quarter of your space that that will be adequate. I usually recommend to people that they keep at least a third of their space open on their computers for better overall computer performance. Hoping this makes sense!

    Hi Mollie, thank you for your email.
    There are a couple of things that I am interested in when dealing with photo organizing, which I have been doing for the past 20+ years.
    One of my issues is how to show the photos to an audience. It is always hard to view an album through the computer or phone screen. Yes you can dump the files on a thumb drive and stick it in an intelligent TV screen; I know that is doable. Or I can use a projector connected to the computer. What is missing is telling the story. So I have made attempts with video editing software to tell the story. That means a good (and simple) software program where actual videos and static photos can be combined in a story. But it is a lot of work and if not used regularly as you recommend, I tend to forget the tricks and tips to use it.
    What would be your recommendations for presentation and video editing?
    Thanks

    I was just about sold on this program, but I got confused about the storage when I was installing it... Are the pictures stored in a cloud? I have over 3T of pictures and videos and want them to be backed up in a cloud in case my external hard drive bits the dust.

    • @nannysclan
      @nannysclan 2 роки тому +2

      Mylio is not cloud backup/storage. I thought it was also. It is more of syncing (between devices) and organizing app. I am finding it difficult to change metadata on older scanned photos. I want to add general times of year and locations. Can't find information on adding locations. I am looking at other options for my photo storage and organizing.

    • @Pixologie
      @Pixologie  2 роки тому +1

      Jolene - That is a LOT of photos . . . I store the original photos on my computer and then back up to an external hard drive but that doesn't work for you . . . With Mylio, you can connect a second external hard drive to back up your collection from your first external hard drive. I also wonder if a service like iDrive or Backblace backing up your external devices in total would solve the situation.
      Hope this helps?

    How do you feel about the company being around like 10/20 years from now? Worried about investing in this company only to have them close down in a few years…

    • @Pixologie
      @Pixologie  3 роки тому +1

      It’s a good question as I have personally seen several photo organizing programs come and go. I do know that once the software is installed on your computer, you have the software. I believe how it syncs if you connect multiple devices will still work as well… I think with any software we can plan on 10 to 20 years from now that things will look quite different… I wish that wasn’t the case but if you were using your program routinely and following the company news, I think that will help if there’s a transition process in the future. Just think about the major tech companies who offered photo products that have changed or been eliminated (Adobe and Google come to mind easily.) The people who find out years later that their program doesn’t work but really have to struggle to resolve and find a new solution. Since Mylio is installed on your computer, And your photos are stored on your computer, your work will be preserved. A big problem is if you move to a new computer and you can’t install it on a new computer… This is just a few thoughts that I have and I hope it’s helpful! Cheers, Mollie
