I used to use Picassa and I loved it and after they killed it and moved to google photos. I stopped using it due to online storage cost and privacy.
What I liked about picassa now that I think back is - a stand alone software, on my computer, that helps organise my photos, helps me see those photos, edit, delete, select and also mark out favourites without duplicating pictures and export small subset at a reduced resolution for digital frames, websites etc. Thanks for helping me think through the solution I want now. Currently I just keep photos in folders in two different media. Will explore iPhoto’s if I can use it as stand alone.

Hi Sunil - Thank you so much for your feedback! Many people loved Picasa and it is stilled missed by many! Apple Photos does function as a stand alone software on your Mac computer. (It also syncs to iCloud and your phone).

I would categorize photo applications by the following functionalities:
    1. The artistic applications - focuses on coloring, shades, and picture enhancing and modification.
    2. The techy applications - focuses on bells and whistles; adding music, merging images, slapping text on the picture, face recognition, deleting duplicates, linking stories to the picture, all kinds of automatic functions.
    3. The Organizing applications - focuses on organizing and creating a filing system.
The following are some of my concerns:
    1. Most applications are focused on professional photographers.
    2. There is no clear explanation as to the security of your photos. Do these applications that are internet-based have any privacy responsibility?
    3. Are my pictures copied to their site?
    4. How can you buy a product, when you don’t have a clear idea of what it offers?
    5. Are there any limits as to the number of photos the application can handle? Mylio announces itself as being able to handle 25K photos. When it got to 15K the application told me it was max-out.
    6. There seems to be no application that think of people who are organizing thousands of photos, decades of pictures that need to be properly labeled (on the photo) and put in sequence.
    7. Ten or twenty years from now, our descendants are not going to want to jumps through hoops to know who is in the photo, where it is and when was it taken. Basic stuff, that should be standard on every application. Shouldn’t there be a standard that labels the photo with date, subject and location on the photo? Old cameras had this feature. A simple stroke of a key should be able to either show the information or suppress it. No photo application should be created without this feature.
    8. A function as simple as labeling has been highjacked. I have not found an application that can take my first 20 photos and label them January, the second 200 and label them February, and organize them in a sequential order without making the user jump through hoops.
Totally frustrated with photo applications. Many hours of watching UA-cam with no results.

Hi Jose - I can understand your frustrations as I share them. I now simply teach people to save photos in folders on their computers and then upload them to Forever for storage and to create photo books. It is private and secure and will migrate photos to the newest technology for your lifetime plus 100 years.
I suspect Forever may be too simple of a product for what you want to do but here is a review of it: ua-cam.com/video/3qgyQzTfv74/v-deo.html
Most consumers don't the time or knowledge to learn about all of these things. The words, definitions and icons have no consistency over the various software and apps and make it difficult to even compare.
Within a couple of weeks, I'll be uploading my 2022 overview of photo organizing programs based on all of the feedback I've had for the past year on this video.
Thank you so much for watching and your thoughts. The tech world has truly made a mess of helping consumers save their photos.

Jose, I am where you are. I have searched the internet for weeks. I cannot find any real answers. I can't believe there isn't a program that will batch upload with the directory and file info, check for dups, and make note of facial recognition. Storing safely in the cloud where I can easily edit or print. Baffled this does not exist. I would gladly pay for a program that would do this.

Thanks for the great overview and especially the 3 important minimum requirements. I'm helping an older couple organize and backup a bazzion photos that are literally all over their hard drives from 3 different computers. Duplicate finding is a high priority. Looking for something in the very easy category that they can maintain. Your tips have already helped me cross several off my list that I won't spring on them.
BTW, your audio is very low. You might want to bring it up 7 or 8dB. Fortunately, I have desktop speakers that can really crank, but those viewing on phones won't have that ability.

Hello Mollie. Thanks for this video, you're such a pleasure to listen to. Wanted to add my 5 cents to the topic. I was an apple user for long years and I've built myself a digital prison by using iPhoto and then Photos app. Because when you do have thousands of digital shots and videos there carefully organized by albums, it will be very painful and time consuming to jump away from Mac / iPhone and migrate somewhere else without losing you structure. I'm not even speaking about cases, when you do upgrade from one version of Photos to another there's always a chance to loose some of your digital assets without even knowing that. And when you finally realize it happened to you long months after, it's such a pain to figure out what exactly was lost, thanks to the blackbox technology of how it stores your photos (deep inside of photolibrary bundle). So yes, iPhoto / Photos app (I'm speaking about mac here, not the phone) is definitely good looking and smart enough piece of software, but for users it might become a prison with some traps inside. So NO to them. Speaking about some other commercial standalone products you also need to be very careful wrt how exactly do they store the structure of your albums / other metadata. Because if it's somewhere deep inside of them, in some proprietary format - it's also big red NO. The best, if such software can rely on existing folders structure (and here you need to develop some discipline yourself) + make use of metadata. So far my tool of choice is open source DigiKam. It surely won't disappear from market, like Picassa did and as every other open source it has a community behind. Sorry took longer than I expected 😅
PS and yes, sorry, do not trust to "clouds" much. They also tend to loose your data without letting you know or getting closed without further warnings. Even the ones that guarantee you lifetime support / guarantee or similar sweet lies. The only responsibility they bear in case if data loss is to say sorry and give you a discount for the next month

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts! There are so many things to think about with saving your photos… I know a lot of people who would like to have Picasa back. I do worry about most photo storage sites for the reasons you say. But, Forever Permanent Photo Storage puts a portion of the purchase price into the Forever Guaranty Fund… I really like their model and leadership. But everyone has to feel comfortable with their photo management solution. I’m glad you like Digikam… I’ll have to check it out!

    • @alx8439
      @alx8439 2 роки тому

@@Pixologie digikam might look a bit scary from the beginning, but it's very powerfull tool with a lot of features every digital photo management solution should have:
      - it works perfectly with all metadata
      - it shows geo info on map
      - it can detect faces and put them to photo' tags
      - it can search for duplicates
      - it has tonns of different view modes
      - it's free and opensourse, it's there for more a decade already and it's not going anywhere as long as opensource exits

I'm looking for a Cloud based photo backup system. Backup is the keyword. I have somewhere in the neighborhood of 80,000+ family oriented images. I have these files on a primary desktop computer with two wired external hard drive backups and a mobile backup. Two primary file folders. One is Genealogy the other is specific to my personal photos. The sub-folders contain a variety of types of files. Most are Jpegs and include news or text along with image photos. I have been working on the filing system for at least 15 years. Images go back into the 1800's. I have digitized 30 to 40 photo albums/scrapbooks dating back to the 1920's. Every old photo I could get my hands on I have digitized along with my fathers slides and negatives as well as mine. Once the digital cameras came into play cataloging the images was easy and I currently practice delete first on camera the unnecessary photos, then move them into a categorized current year folder. So if one were to ask me what information do I have on my Great Grandfather in the year 1895, it would take me a matter of seconds to pull the folder and sub-folders up to see. For example take my father, before seeing an image you would follow this path: Fox-James-1944-Military-Tonapah then photos or other info would appear. There would be several other folders under 1944 and Military in this example. All these photos are typically being run through Topaz AI - Lightroom - Photoshop to final edit. Original photo is saved along with enhanced photo. I have some photos in Google Photos and Amazon Photos which end up coming from my Phone. I find these programs useless for my photo catalog system. I do not use "Albums" except for an occasional short group of photos to share. Now, why am I doing this! Well, with the advent of the cellphone camera, everyone is a photographer now. Myself, I use the cell camera for convenience but have been taking photos since the '60's with state-of-the-art cameras. My father used several types of cameras, all film based, and I picked up the interest as a teen. I have watched folks try to show me a photo on their phone by thumbing and thumbing through the 1,000's of photos that they have to no avail. I suggest to them that they need to organize the images which includes DELETING many, if not most but that is also to no avail. So, here's my purpose of organizing my collection. Photobooks. Not exclusively photos, but most importantly text or narratives. Many of us have looked through old photo albums, but someone needs to be looking over your shoulder to explain what you are looking at. I interject cations, narratives including near entire pages of explanatory information to inform the person perusing the book as to what they are seeing, and my little stories, many humorous (at least to me) to keep them interested. I use Shutterfly and Photobook currently. I have produced 40 or so of these books. Most are associated with trips or family information associated with my geological research. I have produced a two volume 200+ page book of two of my wife's notable cousins, Toussaint and Jean Baptiste Charbonneau. Also a 300 page book of my fathers hunting escapades. My next endeavor is of Michael Fox who at 17 left Ireland in 1848, came to New Orleans, then quickly left for the California gold fields. I only have 2 or 3 actual photos of Michael yet I expect this photobook to exceed 100 pages. What will be inside the book is a variety of clipped maps, news articles, points of interest photos, historical internet photos, google earth photos, etc. Other that actual text I inject into the book the balance needs to be in jpeg format for the company to use it. These jpegs must be in logical file folders to be efficiently accessed. My point in this lengthy oration is have a reason to save your photos. There must be trillions of useless photos that now exist on devices, at least I can find my useless photos. Finally, here's my question (I'm sure you're glad I finally got to this point) what Cloud Based storage system will keep my organized folders and files intact so I can quickly and efficiently access them without having to reorganize them.

I am expecting that these companies will make this a feature in the future because it sure would be handy!

I currently use simply just folders on my harddrive backed up to duplicate places. While I would like to use a photo management option to be able to tag, I am struggling with the cost and with security. $120/year seems excessive, and I see few reviews of Forever when I search, and I am worried about forking out that kind of cash without seeing that it is used widespread. Finally, I would like to know what happens to the data (can it e accessed outside of the software) if the company goes out of business. I have seen many companies come and go, and longevity guarantees mean little when the company goes belly up. I thought your review was very good, but I still feel a little overwhelmed in how to select the right option for me as a hobbyist, particularly since they all seem so pricey.

Hi there… thanks for watching! I have no experience with Linux… but I did find this article… itsfoss.com/linux-photo-management-software/
I haven’t tested any of the programs listed so I can’t help there.
As for your Clickfree backup, unfortunately it sounds like the company went out of business. There’s no support now it. And it sounds like working with windows 10 is problematic. Without having your drive to look at, from what I saw online, if you can connect your old drive to a windows computer, maybe older than Windows 10. Then attempt to copy the folders and files you want over to a USB drive to then copy to your Linux computer. Please let me know if this helps at all…
      Cheers!

We have thousands of photos we need to categorize, store then copy and eventually upload some of the copies to showcase our work in a website. We do not want a web or cloud based software. We use MS on a PC (non-Apple non Mac). which software do you recommend? Thank you.

    • @Pixologie
      @Pixologie  2 роки тому

Hi there - I'm thinking you use a PC. (If you are a Mac user, then Apple Photos is the answer.) I actually simply recommend using your File Explorer to organize your photos. When you organize in folders, it is much easier to run a duplicate finding program. You are in complete control of your photo collection and its easier to maintain. There are a lot of variables with any of the other programs. Once photos are organized and backed up to an external hard drive, I recommend uploading your photos to Forever where you pay one time for the storage you need. Here are a few links to help. . .

@@Pixologie Thank you for the detailed feedback. I like the Forever "once and done payment model" though I have aprox 20,000 photos and videos that I need to organize. If each photo/video took 30 seconds to sort it would take nearly 17 weeks working 40 hours a day to sort through all of them. I think I'm going to need something that has AI or face recognition which Forever doesn't have. I'm not sure hot to tackle the problem. Do you have any recommendations for programs that have a pay once business model and that has facial recognition and ways to automate the organization task. Thanks.

    • @Pixologie
      @Pixologie  2 роки тому +1

Hi again - I understand where you are coming from, but I don't necessarily look at organizing the same way. When organizing by date, it should be pretty quick to group photos by year and maybe with nested albums by month. In the example below, I am showing a folder structure by decades/years/months & events:
      2010s Photos
      -- 2010 Photos
      ---- 2010-01 January Photos
      ---- 2010-02 February Photos
      ---- 2010-02 California Trip
      ---- etc.
      -- 2011
      -- 2012
      -- etc.
      2020s Photos
      -- 2020 Photos
      -- 2021 Photos
      -- 2022 Photos
Facial recognition, tagging and descriptions are a secondary task in my mind. (although I know some people prefer to organize by person - this is not a good long term strategy)
Once your photos are organized in folders, then you can deduplicate (if that is a problem) and then perhaps entertain moving it into a program to do the work of facial recognition, etc.)
With that all being said, you could try out Forever Historian which does have facial recognition . . . You purchase the software and own it outright. I feel like this is a dated program but it might just be up your alley. It does not allow you to organize in folders, but does have a great timeline feature to sort photos by date easily.
It is sold by Forever (for whom we are ambassadors) and you can upload your photos to a storage account if you want for easy sharing and longterm preservation. There is an upgrade coming soon for it. And, I will say there is a learning curve to it. You can download a free trial here:

You’re not the first person to suggest that I come up with something. However I think I need to figure out the developing a habit issue first.

@@Pixologie yes habits are essential for a number of things. Many like me though, put things off then want a quick fix for it. I am trying to source an offline program for local storage. There are a number of programs I am looking at "Photo duplicate finders" to fist find duplicates. Other sites have highly recommended Adobe (Bridge and Lightroom) for sorting images.
I must admit I source programs for free "Trail/educational/non profit/personal" uses so I would imagine some of these other programs are out of reach budget wise. So no I haven't tried Mylio, was that the online one.. Some of your suggestions are great. I didn't know there were dedicated gallery sites just for images.
Some of the programs I am going to try are:
      Abelssoft PhotoSort
      Duplicate Photo Cleaner
      3delite Duplicate Picture Finder
      Qimage Ultimate

    • @Pixologie
      @Pixologie  3 роки тому +1

Hi Ronald - This is tricky - You'll have to name them in the order you want.
      01 Kids Under 12 _0001
      01 Kids Under 12_0002
      01 Kids Under 12_0003
      01 Kids Under 12_0004
      01 Kids Under 12_0005
      02 Kids 13 to 21_0001
      02 Kids 13 to 21_0002
      02 Kids 13 to 21_0003
      02 Kids 13 to 21_0004
      03 Adults_0001
      03 Adults_0002
      03 Adults_0003
      Etc.
Windows is not the easiest way to rename photos. (Adobe Bridge works nicely for batch renaming.)
I think it might be easier to create three folders for the batches.
      Hoping this helps!

I need something very easy to help me delete duplicates and to organize all my photos into folders. I have always kept pictures in folders with my PC (which would name the pictures the title of the folder), but since I got my MAC 10 years ago, my pictures are a complete mess because Apple does not name pictures that way. Apple assigns them a long number/letter name that has nothing to do with the topic of the pictures and only type of organization is by date. I am so overwhelmed. I have copied all of my pictures over from my PC and external drive onto my MAC but nothing is appropriately organized and there are so many duplicates. Please help!
