Omg! I saw a bug or two today for the first time in two years since I got my first orchid, and I panicked! After watching this video, I can identify them as springtails, and yay they are a good big! Phew! Thank you for the educational content. Your the only source of orchid content I will watch! 😊

I am fairly new to the orchid obsession and I noticed a super tiny fast moving bug and panicked thinking I have mealy bugs. After watching this video I realized I have springtails as they behave and move around exactly like the ones in your footage. Thank you! I am no longer panicked but will keep my eye on that orchid just in case I am wrong. 😅

Have you tried spinosad? it's an insecticide that's virtually non toxic to humans/ mammals, but extremely deadly to many insects. I think it is isolated from some kind of bacterium originally found in sugar canes(?). I applied it on my thrip infested plants several weeks ago, and haven't seen a single living thrip since.

The only bugs I have seen so far on my orchids are the fungus gnats which I have been successful in controlling with the yellow sticky pads. This year though I have found ant nests in 2 different indoor pots. I have an insecticidal soap that kills them instantly and I flushed the medium/plant to get rid of the eggs. But it's quite upsetting that hundreds of ants can come out of a 2.5 inch pot. Both mediums were bark which I don't normally use indoors because of the lack of humidity. Thanks for the information!

I'm new to growing orchids and so far I've had no issues but I'm so glad I watched this video. I live in a tropical region and I see these pests ALL THE TIME outside on my plants. I don't grow my orchids outside yet but was thinking about it. I'm not so sure now. Nice video! Thanks for posting!

A few FYIs -- 1.) the larval stage of ladybugs are extremely aggressive at eating up aphids. If you can get ladybugs to lay their eggs on your plants (before they fly away, that is), you will have an amazing control for aphids; 2.) scale DO like to munch on flowers. They're like the rest of us -- they like the easy, soft eats. Using an old, soft-bristle toothbrush is handy to get into the hard to get into spaces if you're trying to physically remove them. Just keep rinsing the brush off in whatever solution you're using (alcohol, Neem oil and soap, etc.), and this will dislodge them; 3.) if the orchids aren't too large, consider making a treating solution in a basin or bucket, and literally dunk the whole plant in. Shake off the excess solution, and invert them on a towel until the solution dries off, so you don't end up with crown rot. This insures you get ALL the surfaces, unlike with spraying; 4.) the ants which like the sweet sticky stuff will ALSO help spread scale, though not as much as with the mealy bugs.
    Good luck everyone!

@@jeanbeck202 I believe it's only the variety from Mexico that bite. They have an orange color with the black spots; and tend to come in swarms as I recall. The red ones are a different variety, and do not bite.

This is a super helpful video! Thanks, Danny! I know you prefer natural solutions to problems. This might not work for orchids--especially indoors or not in a greenhouse--but I also have a pollinator garden in my outdoor space. For aphids, which are soft-bodied insects, there are two predators which don't damage plants: lady bugs (any color) and lacewings. Nurseries often carry them. In your hotter climate, they will likely be available. Then you wouldn't need to apply any substances to your orchids at all. Especially those you keep outdoors. 💜

I so wish I had found this months ago as it would have helped me identify an infestation of mealy bugs earlier, but it does seem like I treated them in the right way, however I am now a bit paranoid about finding them so I check my orchids every couple of days, the one that was infested does now appear to be doing well which I am so pleased with and now have 2 big orchids and 2 mini's, I am not usually very successful at keeping indoor plants but so far so good.

I have a shipment of green lacewing larvae on the way! Great all around predator, they eat virtually any plant pest :)
Also, the liquid aphids excrete is definitely sweet, it's sometimes referred to as honeydew, and ants love it. In the wild, certain ant colonies associate with aphid colonies, cleaning up after them, protecting them from predators, and getting a sweet meal in return :)

What would you say about fungus gnats? Most growers see them as just annoying but not particularly harmful. But in my experience, they can actually be quite harmuful to orchids with fleshy roots. That is because they literally drill (bore??) themselves into the roots and eat them from the inside out. This causes very small circular holes in the root tissue which later turn into brown lesions in the areas under which the larvae was active. Especially fresh-emerging Cataseitinae seem to be their fovourite food in my collection. The damage can cause root rot or rootloss and in the case of Catasetinae, losing all of their root tips before they have a chance to grow out properly is a big problem since they lose many of their old roots in the dormancy phase.

I have not had the issue on my orchids but nearly all of my other types of plants, especially Hoya and other more fine types of rooted plants i am struggling badly with root mealy bugs. Even when i unpot, pressure wash roots, soak in very soapy hot water, water with full strength hydrogen peroxide, provide high strength neem oil soil drenches, bonide systemic , soil drench with insecticidal soap, soak in hot water. I don’t seem to be able to kick them. I am wondering if they can be present in bags of soil because even when i chop and re-root, they show up again. I don’t share water between any of my plants and so i also wonder if they can move between plants by air. When i first realized i had the infestation, the white egg sac bits were floating around the air inside my ikea greenhouse cabinet. I know warm and humid is their favorite type of environment so the cabinet is heaven for them. All the things i have done help, but the issue persists. It is so frustrating and the information is far and few between. Anyone have experience with these little bastards???

Anyone seeing scales and aphids on a plant needs to look at its overall health because they go to sick plants specifically. Its like a beacon for them. They will go to healthy plants obviously but if you see both especially you better look at the health of your plant/what you were doing before they came.

    • @mmirandaxx
      @mmirandaxx 3 роки тому +1

Fungus gnats breed in damp soil, so watering less usually does the trick; if the top few cm of soil dry out, the eggs and larvae cannot develop. If you have a lot of moisture-loving plants that like evenly damp soil, maybe try keeping them in different rooms so the gnats don't go from one to the other and reproduce like crazy.
They are relatively harmless though, just annoying :)

Just updating this video with my experience on Scale & Spidermites on our whole collection of orchids: it worked 🥹😭😻😻😻😻😻 We’ve been struggling with these terrible parasites for years with no natural approach helping.
The hairspray seems to work wonders! I showered the orchids. Let them dry & applied the hairspray. Let it sit for 15-20 days and MIRACLE!!! The die off was instant and effective.
Also, it feels like the orchids took a huge boost, lots of new leaves and sprouts pierces through. I’ve never seen our orchids so healthy and happy!
Brilliant idea!! THANK YOUUUUU @missorchidgirl 💐🎉🩷🩷🩷
