How to Make Wood Stain with Rusty Nails & Vinegar

- Hi guys,
In this video I experiment with some Rusty Nails & White Vinegar to come up with a Wood Stain. The Stain ends up as a darkish Silver / Grey colour which looks interesting and makes the Wood look aged. It is very simple to make so it's certainly worth a go!

The bed slat and pallet wood look like really nice color to be honest, I wasn’t thinking it was gonna produce that much but I really shocked, nice easy cheap trick. Thanks for posting Phil
Hi Chris thanks 👍 yea they came out quite good once dried. I will probably be using this stain in some future projects 😃
The science behind it straight forward. Iron acetate is formed from the reaction of acetic acid and iron oxide. The iron acetate reacts with the tannins in the wood
Thanks for the info 👍
Amazing results. When you put it on, I didn't think it would stain very much at all. Then 2 hours later... Boom, completely different.
I know yea I was surprised myself. It's quite good you just have to make sure not to get a drop anywhere as it really stains
Very interesting, I do like the gray shade Phill looks good.
Yea Karl it does look good I was quite surprised. I'll have to find something to use it on 🤔
Cheap alternative and does the job, nice one Phil
Thanks Angus👍 yea it seems to be a good alternative I recommend it.
Phill, you have had a much better result than I have ever got, was that Sarsons vinegar?. In the past I used Aldi white vinegar at 29p per bottle and did not get much of a result.
This is the first time I have tried it so I was lucky I think. Yes it was Sarsons Vinegar I only bought it because it was the only one in the supermarket at the time.
I assume that you could lighten the effect with some sanding?
Yes or just leave the nails in for less time.
Does steel wood make it lighter or about the same?
Not sure I would say lighter.
