Save your rusty oxidizing liquid. You can 'stain' wood with it and turn it various shades of grey, weathered look (always test your wood first in a small area because different woods react differently, ie lighter grey versus nearly black). It will darken in the grey shades as it dries.
best way to do that is if to use a glass jar, i used pasta jars.....put however much vinegar you want in the jar and a piece of steel wool. let that sit for a few days to a week then use that liquid to fake age your wood. works really good!!!
Love the video!! Thank you for the tutorial! I have rusted the bigger dollar tree bells but I found that they rust easier if you take the top finish off first. I do that usually by putting the bells in our campfire when camping and the heat from the fire takes the bells down to their original metal. I have also used. A small torch lighter also but it takes longer. Just a thought I would share.
janelle goucher Thank you for that tip! Usually the vinegar helps take that top layer off, but those big bells are feisty!! I can see my husbands face as I throw bells into the fire....lol. We crafters must do what we gotta do. 😜 Hugsies!
I finally tried the rusting method with small bells and safety pins before I saw the video. I remembered your directions in another video and ventured into it on my own. Since seeing this video I now have the exact measurements. They’ve been in the solution for two days and still need more time. I hope they come out as good as yours. I love all these little tricks for crafts. They make a lot of difference in the outcome of artistic projects. Thanks.
Hi Debbie!! Glad you came over! Welcome!! That’s what I liked best about rusting these...everyday household items. Plus it really is quick and easy!! Have a blessed day!! 💛
❤you are such a blessing to me! Your comments at the end have helped me in these hard times! I’m suffering physically, mentally and emotionally. Your videos have helped me in so many ways. I love Jesus, and know Him in a personal way…..so you are my sister in the Lord. Thankful for you, and your you tube channel. God bless you, and your family! In Jesus love, Jane holmes
Thank you so much 😊 Jane! I pray, in Jesus Name, that He will bless you immensely in ways that you cannot fathom! I pray that God will guide you in all that you do! I pray He comforts you emotionally, so much, that you feel His heart …without a doubt… holding yours! I pray that He heals you quickly and that you will find a reason to smile without pain. I pray you will feel His mercy and grace, His comfort, His guidance, His love for you…Every. Single. Moment. Keep looking to Him, Jane. Do not look to the right or to the left, but keep your eyes focused on Him. I pray all of this in His mighty Name! Amen! 🧡
Had to write...was referred earlier today to your tutorial. Easily followed your instructions and have just completed my first batch of rusted metals! I am so excited!! Thank you!!!
Welcome!!! Glad to have you here and it makes me smile that you have your first batch of rusty metal! 😉 isn’t it fun how we get excited for rust??? It makes a difference on our projects for sure!! Have a blessed day! 💛
So I’ve been trying to rust a spoon. It’s stainless steel, so I learned (the hard way) I had to get creative 😂 I’ve been playing around with soap as a way of getting bubbles. I drop some iron into the mix and rust comes off and gets in the bubbles. Then I rub the bubbles onto the spoon. It gives a really cool crusty look
Thank you! I thrifted a handful of bells ! I wanted more rusty look to them for my project ! This is wonderful I have all the things I need right at home! ❤❤
Thanks for the DIY. i'd like to rust some small metal parts on a leather jacket. Can i prepare the mixture and apply it on using a Q-tip? also, if I want those not too rusty, does water stop the process? thanks a lot
So so helpful to see this done in real time and relatively easy seeing it done, which suits my learning style. Thank you Linda, I am very pleased, especially as I live in England and actually had to import some rusty bells and stars from the states, which cost £55. Now I can do my own he he!!!! Cuddles Jane x
You probably dont give a damn but does anyone know of a trick to get back into an instagram account? I somehow lost my login password. I love any assistance you can give me.
@Merrick Nixon I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm in the hacking process now. Looks like it's gonna take a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Thank you for sharing, I bought some rusty bells on Amazon, before ai saw your video, so will definitely be trying this method at home. I have some wire I want to rust, and will try bells closer to Christmas when they are out in stores later this year. 😊
I found you through suggested videos. First your videos are very informative. I have a fairly new you tube channel so I’m definitely doing my research. Thanks for all your help. Please keep it up! Just subbed!
The Real Real Housewife Welcome to my channel! If you ever have any questions, please ask,. I will do what I can to help! Good luck with your channel! Have a wonderful day! 💛
Discovered you this week and love your videos and style of teaching! Sorry to see you have a cast on...it really limits things you can do. I broke my ankle in May and had cast on for 6weeks!! Never do glad to get something off in my life. Speedy recovery to you and I love your channel! ❤️
Thank you so much Julie and welcome to my channel! It’s so nice to meet you! I finally got my cast off only to be put in a splint for another month and after that probably 3-6 months more healing. But I can start crafting again…many blessings 😊
Have you tried spraying the rusted items with a matte finish varnish or clear coat of some sort to keep the rust from coming off ? Do you think that would help?
Love your process! Much quicker than mine. I actually got my larger DT bells to rust quite well using just vinegar for a couple of days, and then water. But I like how fast yours worked. Thanks! :)
Thank you for subscribing! Welcome!! 😀 I’ve heard of the toilet bowl cleaner method for rusting, but not ever tried it! Is there a certain brand that works best? It would be nice for those larger items! Have a blessed day!!! 💛
@@LindasDIYbyDesign I've used Dollar Tree brand. The bottle has a top that's made specifically to get the product under the rim of the toilet bowl rim. I don't think the brand makes a difference, but the type may. I've only used the kind in that different shaped bottle.
Thank you Kim for your kind words and welcome to my channel! 😀 It’s great to have you along!! Hope you find tons of inspiring ideas!! Many blessings!!! 💛
I just watched your video on rusting metal. How awesome & so easy with household products. How do you dispose of the mixture when you have finished with it? Thanks for all of your inspiration!
It is a very easy method Shirley! Also, I do find that the things from Dollar Tree seem to rust easier, maybe because of the cheaper quality of metals??? Anyhoo, I usually just pour it outside. We get a lot of rain here, so it dilutes it for sure! Thanks so much! Merry Christmas 🎄
Can you use a tissue to wipe off the the powdery rust? Or will that take off all the rust color too? If it's powdery won't the powder stain your craft project? And how do you glue the powdery bell onto craft? Won't, bell fall off if it's powdery?
Hey Cheryl! I have found the best metals that work quickly for rusting are Dollar Tree metals. I have used other metals, like bells and safety pins from Walmart, but they take longer to rust. I think the Dollar Tree metals are lesser quality and don’t have the outer layer, so to speak, that other metals have...if you know what I mean...so they rust lickety split! I get the silver wire in the automotive part of Dollar Tree. And then the safety pins in their craft section, or a lot of times up by the cashier. They come in a little plastic container. And then just the normal silver bells you can find at Christmas time. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions! Warning...once you start rusting, it’s addictive! 😉 TFW! 😀
Thank you for this video. What kind of wire is that and where can I find it? I see galvanized steel wire in the hardware store but I don’t think it will rust. Thanks!
Hey there! Sooo sorry, I got back to you late…that wire is from Dollar Tree. It’s in the automotive section. Since it’s kinda cheapie and not galvanized, it rusts beautifully! Hope this helps!
Thank you so much! Im sorry I missed this question….I’m afraid, though, that I won’t be too helpful…I haven’t tried it on brass before…I would think it would work if it’s a cheaper metal. Hope you try this process! Many blessings!
You said you let bells stay in liquid til the bells have a powdery surface. Doesn't that powder stain your craft & get all over your hands & work surface? Does it smell after you remove bells from mixture? You said the vinegar was smelly.
The rust can get on things yes, but you can wipe it off. It won’t take the rust look off of the objects! I don’t know if I’ve smelled the vinegar smell once they have been taken out. Hope this helps! 😀
I don’t see why not!! It would definitely smell yummy! I’ve saved my liquid batches a couple of months before (like if I started these in September and made more thought the bazaar season getting closer to my last bazaar in December), in an airtight container. Worked fine. Thank you so much for watching! Merry Christmas to you!!
You know what Patti...I don’t know. Give it a whirl. It won’t hurt anything. You just won’t see the metal oxidize. Good question though. Sorry I wasn’t better help. Let me know how it turns out, if you try it!

But don't seal the glass jar. The gas build up can cause it to burst.@@kountrykraftsbyDeb
Hey! Is it possible that it becomes toxic after a while ? Or is it safe to keep it for a long time in the jar?

It's really fun to stick metal in a mix of miracle gro and water. You get a blue verdigree look.
Oooo, I’m going to give that a try. Have you tried it with the $ tree bells?
