I just watched a 24 minute long lesson on a song that I already know how to play. That really speaks volumes about the quality of engagement that you give off in your videos. Cheers dude!
I do think it's a beautiful beautiful thing that his son played this song and did exceptionally well with it I can't believe Taylor's gone I really can't.....
This is the best tutorial I’ve ever scene. By far the best way to explain things just the right pace and you really explained things all the way. Thanks for not just saying it then playing it at full tempo and expecting people to understand and follow it. GOOD JOB MAN!!!
this song, scentless apprentice and his version of school helped me so much to improve my bass drum technique, and I recommend it to all the drummers to learn these songs
Just to clarify once and for all: Taylor was not at the band yet when this song was recorded, actually Dave recorded the drums secretely which resulted on a fight with William Goldsmith, the drummer back then.
I'm pretty solid playing this song with my kick foot. But Everlong always kicks the shit out of me everytime I try to play it before warming up, the left harm keeps cramping up, because of the constant hi-hats.
+Stephen Taylor i play everlong and my hero in a 90's alt cover band and they are easily in my top 3 hardest but most fun songs in the set. I love your break down of these parts, ive been playing the chorus a little different by riding on the floor tom to give my foot a little break on a beat or two hahaha
I am a musician, I have been playing guitar for about 15 years but I started playing drums about a week ago and I took this song as a constant exercise. I can only tell you that I have developed my leg and arm coordination in just three days and my foot speed is increasing dramatically day by day. T H A N K S!
I know this tutorial is an old one but….I’m substituting for a drummer and this is on the set list. I always try dissecting the songs on my own first and then see what some other people have come up with. Your breakdown is the only note for note accurate dissection I’ve found. There are some great interpretations and fantastic “hides” that create a good feel. But every one that I’ve seen cover up what, for me, is the hardest portion of the song. Maintaining the foot pattern while playing the tom grooves at the beginning, during the chorus and the end. Holy cow tap dancing around a campfire that’s a challenge for me. Got the foot speed and stamina, no problem there. NOT playing the notes that are not supposed to be played while doing those fills. I’ll be able to do it but I’m spending a lot more time on coordination stuff than I imagined. It’ll be worth the work when it *SNAP* …all of a sudden falls into place. Thanks, as always, for you absolutely thorough break down and attention to detail in this tutorial. You’re one of the best.
Fantastic lesson, Stephen. I knew listening to that song that there were toms in the intro, but Taylor always played it live with the snare and hats. Thank you for breaking it down for us!
I recently sold all of my guitars to purchase drums. I've been playing guitar for almost 10 years but something didn't feel right.. there is just something about drumming that I love. I watched a video of Taylors son playing Hero and it gave me the chills .. now I currently have an electric set and I'm learning pretty fast this will be the first song I learn fully on drums! Little by little and I love the attitude behind playing this song ! Love the video man and thank you so much !
Great video. This was the first bucket of fish I learned as a kid. Never noticed the ghost notes on the snare until now. Adding this song to my next practice session!
Stephen Taylor, will you teach us Everlong or maybe some soundgarden or System of a Down with this same level of clarity? I love the way i you you teach it. I still had to slow it down on some but it was perfect. I found myself writing some down to comprehend some order when you list all the kick beats separately and so on. I love it. You are the best teacher.
So I watched this two months ago and started learning the song, fast forward to now and I can play it pretty well, including the open-hand stuff in the intro. I legit learned how to play open-hand thanks to this song and this tutorial lol
Enjoying these song lessons Stephen, including the Mr. Brightside vid! Any chance you could do a video in future on 'Superstition', particularly breaking down the end-of-chorus fills? It's one we play a lot at weddings and showcase events, but I always find it hard to avoid sounding stock or repetitive in what I play when performing those particular fills, without over complicating things!
vertigo_2000 Glad you’re enjoying them! Superstition is a fun one. Stevie kills that track. I have that full chart and lesson already in the members area on my website.
vertigo_2000 Stevie played a live show on this song where he added a cowbell at the end and it super charged the song!!! Way better playing than what was recorded! I wish I could find that recorded concert again!
This is one of those concepts that a lot of us tend to underestimate. I have been playing drums for over 14 years, most of the time I don't find classic Rock, alternative.... Really challenging And honestly I used to underestimate the whole genre in general. Until I tried to play my Hero and "Scentless Apprentice" by Nirvana. it was shocking to me how I struggled that much with those kick pattern like It's my first week playing drums LOL. Knowing that I can play advanced linear flashy stuff, reduiments and fast clean kick doubles It crushed my ego. It was a nice humiliating experience and a reminder to return to basics, practicing straight singles. No matter how good and fast you are with short singles or doubles those continues patterns are gonna be challenging if not addressed cause they require endurance and a diffrent technique. Thank you Stephen for shedding light on that.
Fantastic breakdown! I was able to get the mechanics down for that intro, and it's a blast, but you weren't kidding about about the drum foot workout. I end up having to dumb down the kick beat or my leg starts dying out and sounding sloppy as hell half-way through the song. Worse yet if it's late in a set list.
Hi Stephen thanks for the lesson. I realize how much content is in this, I did find it confusing as the camera's and the parts tend to jump around and never setlle. I would love to see a video on how Dave would go about building a song like this cheers
Among my favourite vids! Thank you Stephen, for your thorough work and dedication. I like the idea of "drum riff", is it your own or did you borrow it? Thanks for stating Dave Grohl's height as a songwriter, too!!
I was confused on intro..........but you did a great lesson man and helped me win a music competition 😊😊 thanksssss a lot man........plzzzzz keep posting new videos
Thanks for making the sheet music free and reliable by the way I’ve been trying to find a way to get sheet music and I happened to stumble across you so thanks a bunch 👍
I have a very active right foot so this might just work for me. I have to go listen to the song and come back and watch this video because I hear some parts differently but then again I've never played the song nor have I broken it so ill check it out.
As you say, I’m fairly sure they did a bit of dubbing in the studio for the intro. If I was feeling lazy I’d just be playing eighth notes on the closed high hats, with the basic kick/snare pattern underneath it for the intro. No one except you and maybe one or two drummers in the crowd would ever notice/care😆
Very good video, thanks a lot... But I'm still in doubt as to whether another person could be playing the hihat apart on the Toms-Take because, when listening to the multitrack of the song, On the first part of the intro, the hi-hat stops sounding on the snare flams... And in the second part there are crashes in the and of 2, (not only crashes on the groove-take) and the high toms stop sounding ... the drummer has to stop playing the toms in order to crash... Well, thats what I hear.
Hey man, nice lesson! Could you maybe do a lesson on Reptiles by Them Crooked Vultures? The timing in that song has been bothering me for quite a while now. Same drummer and actually the photo in this vids thumbnail is from that band ;)
Sooo... I’ve been playing this song wrong for years in my band! Thanks for showing me the way. LOL This was one of the first tunes we learned when my cover band started playing together 4 years ago. I don’t do the toms at the beginning, but the kick snare groove is the same. I do a slight variation of the chorus. I’ve never heard the isolated drum part, so I also never noticed the ghost notes. I’m excited to work in all of this as you demonstrated! #goals My band recently added “Everlong” to the set list (it kicks my butt). We also do “The Pretender” and their version of “Have a Cigar”.
Stephen Taylor okay... Everlong isolated was awesome! I’m happy to say that I’m much closer on that one. ;) I’m going to have to make searching for isolated drum tracks SOP for learning new tunes.
I play it a little bit differently but more or less like you said. I could never figure out the intro though. I'll try to put that part into my playing from now on!!! Great song, great lesson! Thank you!!!
this is great... I didn't realize a ghost note ... but now I have the whole picture... and I think he put the hi hat on the third kick and then he move to the toms in the beginning of the chorus ... when he play live...
The best training or my foot was playing the album Believe by Disturbed in its entirety. The songs are normally played with a double kick. My Hero is a piece of cake after mastering Believe :)
Awesome lesson, Stephen Taylor thank you so much! 2 questions I would like to ask: 1) Any tips on how to build the endurance for this song's kick? I actually have been practicing this song as a kick exercise, but I quickly lose precision and, not only mess up the tempo, but also I add a few more kicks than necessary. I think lots of my lack of confidence in my kick comes from the fact that I still haven't found the best throne posture. 2) How do you find the separated drum tracks? Do you use an app like Moises, to split tracks, or you just find them on the internet? I know drum tracks of popular songs like this one can easily be found on youtube, but I wonder how they were extracted in the first place - maybe someone leaked the original tracks, or perhaps there is an app like Moises that does an even better job 🤔
davedalessandro8189 Dalessandro Lol...it got requested at a gig a couple of weeks ago and I hadn’t played it in years. Had to stumble through it and learn it again later. Hence this lesson ;^)
Love this, you're extremely talented at teaching music! I'm the exact same way when it comes to learning songs on guitar, I get very nerdy about how everything is played and whatnot. This is probably going to sound like a stupid question but I was wondering, as a noob on the drumkit, is there a video you have or something you recommend me to watch for learning how to get better at drum rolls? Like I said I just started learning the drums and I seem to have the most trouble with drum rolls so far, not sure if it's the way I hold the drum sticks or something else
I really liked the video and the approach but while I am still working on it the way I am getting it down is to do their live version, also their studio 1st track. This allowed me to focus on the bass drum and hat and not worry about the tom overlay part and also trying to learn how to play open handed which is a ways out for me. I would like to be able to play both parts at once but the energy of the song carries live well without the overdubbed toms. It still is a leg workout but one thing at a time.
As you mentioned that Dave Grohl writes drums parts like if were a song, so Dale Crover writes drums as a team with the guitar and that makes Melvins songs pretty dynamic because the drums talks with bass and guitar to be as one. Please review some Melvins songs like "Hag me", or "Boris".
stephen this was a really informative video thank you so much for your analysis! i was actually hoping you could do a similar break down of the song "out of my head" by canadian band 'mobile' i havent been able to figure out the opening snare/hihat groove and a full song breakdown would be awesome since they are a very underrated band and there doesnt seem to be much if at all on youtube, thanks sincerely aspiring doublebass drumer The Captain
Hi Stephen great videos as always but I have a question I am a up and coming drummer who hasn’t been playing very long and have a UA-cam channel but I wanted to know how to improve kick drum speed
For those of you saying Drum didn't involve this drum track. Please remind that the track is recorded back in 1997 when William Goldsmith left the band. Dave was finding a new drummer for replacement meanwhile he did all the drum parts for the record.

This song could kill me. And I have to learn it by Wednesday...
hey bro, I know I'm 3 years late but no sheet is found on that link :(
I’m actually a bit later than the last guy. Is this music available anymore?
Jumping in to ask about the sheet music
I just watched a 24 minute long lesson on a song that I already know how to play. That really speaks volumes about the quality of engagement that you give off in your videos. Cheers dude!
Chris Power Thanks so much Chris...I appreciate it!
i just watched the whole video and i am a guitar player hahahahahahahaha
I watched the whole thing and I'm not a musician! I just love the song hahaha
Same here! Plus I never saw it written before. Great job!!
Same here! I come to this dudes channel like this is TV.

"my wife can tell the song just by hitting the drums" - marriage goals
Lol
My wife can always pick out a few songs...”My Name is Mud” by Primus is her favorite...
@@bpaboyceI wish mine could at least tolerate Primus. Foo Fighters is ok, though.
I do think it's a beautiful beautiful thing that his son played this song and did exceptionally well with it I can't believe Taylor's gone I really can't.....

7:10 intro

this is by far the best tutorial i’ve seen on any song on youtube. You truely show how covers should be learned! great job, i appreciate your work
Thanks so much Aleksa! So glad it was clear for you
Once, you get it, this song isn't that hard. This song definitely developed my foot speed. Dave Grohl is a genius!
Sam Bennett Yea, it’s just straight rock once you get the parts down. They make a lot of sense
That's funny.
this song, scentless apprentice and his version of school helped me so much to improve my bass drum technique, and I recommend it to all the drummers to learn these songs
Just to clarify once and for all: Taylor was not at the band yet when this song was recorded, actually Dave recorded the drums secretely which resulted on a fight with William Goldsmith, the drummer back then.
SaitoGamer Yea, from what I understand they had to re-record most of the album.
Dave’s part is epic though. So he wins.
Who was asking for clarification?
Taylor gets a little bit tired when playing this. The energy required to play this is pretty awesome. Thank you Dave for doing this song! ^^
I wonder if the reason for that fight is really because Dave recorded it behind his back or cause he put him in trouble with that Kick work out LOL.
Just for claification, it was Goldsmith that come up with this drum part, NOT Grohl. Grohl even states as much in the movie that they did.
I don’t play drums but was always curious about how to play this. One of the greatest drum intros in rock history IMO.
I'm pretty solid playing this song with my kick foot.
But Everlong always kicks the shit out of me everytime I try to play it before warming up, the left harm keeps cramping up, because of the constant hi-hats.
Diogo Almeida Yea, Everlong is one that takes some work at that tempo to get it to consistently stay in the pocket. Love playing it
+Stephen Taylor i play everlong and my hero in a 90's alt cover band and they are easily in my top 3 hardest but most fun songs in the set. I love your break down of these parts, ive been playing the chorus a little different by riding on the floor tom to give my foot a little break on a beat or two hahaha
yeah everlong is a great singles/paradiddle workout!
addrock123 yea I do the exact same thing I ride on the floor too, but then I also learned if you do them both at the same time seems more full
DUDE, Next time END with you playing whole song. C'mon I wanna see it bro!

I appreciate the kind words my friend. Glad it helped...kill it on the sub gig!!!
A lot of Dave's drum parts are brutal right foot workouts, Times like These is a fun one to play in the middle of a set
Mike Willson They really are
14:18 this dude is legit. NOONE ever talks about these ghost notes. Thank you!
Oh, man, this one for days! Awesome! I could never quite figure when the bass was played on its own and when along with the toms. Tnx for the lesson!
Strelock You bet
My favorite band!!!!! Definitely murder on the foot when I started playing this song.
Brent Davis indeed
I admire drummers so much!!! The brain power and focus it must take to stay in rhythm....impressive!!

Jakob Sterner Yea, fantastic parts on that one
I don't know jack about drums, but I could watch this all day. Great video. Thanks!
Thanks!
I'm not even a drummer! Yet here I am watching this intently. First of all I LOVE the sound of your toms. Great playing too.

Leonardo Graboski Glad you’re digging them Leonardo!

Awesome open hand technique for the intro
Great job explaining how to play this song
smeaf251 Thanks so much!
Whevever i search youtube for "how to play .... " and i see Stephen Taylor has a video on it... I go "Phew, ok. he can teach me"
Amazing. I was waiting for a tutorial regarding this song. Thank you Stephen!
Efrain Rodriguez You bet Efrain!
Discovered your vids a few days ago. Keep bringing it bud!
Timothy Ekberg You bet Timothy! Glad to have you hangin’ on here. New uploads every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 11am CST.
Great drum lesson I got the hang of it right away!
Excellent video man! You’re clearly an educated drummer and love music!
Great video and playing!!! Congrats and thank you!
Awesome video! Thank you for your help.
Congrats on the win Siddhant! I'll keep em comin

Loved it, especially because Foo Fighters is my favorite rock band! Thank you! ❤️
(I'm also a new drummer, so I'm barely getting started)
Talk about murder on your calves, can you do a lesson on ‘in your mind’ medley by kind gizzard and the lizard wizard?
Man you ain't lying! I covered this on my page if you get a chance to check it out. My right leg was on 🔥 🔥
Shout out from New Orleans homie
You are a beautiful man. Thank you!
You’re amazing at this. My live in, in-laws don’t appreciate my noise (building the shed soon) :). Much love to you and your videos man.
Thank you!

Fantastic job. What a great drum riff.

Great stuff bro! Thanks for the half time shuffle video! Now I know how to do it!🤘🏼🤘🏼

My band recently added “Everlong” to the set list (it kicks my butt). We also do “The Pretender” and their version of “Have a Cigar”.
Everlong is really fun to play. Look up the isolated drum part to this song on You Tube. Interesting to listen to.
Stephen Taylor will do!
Stephen Taylor okay... Everlong isolated was awesome! I’m happy to say that I’m much closer on that one. ;)
I’m going to have to make searching for isolated drum tracks SOP for learning new tunes.
just getting the kick right is an achievement of its own
Great tutorial! I'm gonna have to dig into this one. Also, Jerome Flood does a killer cover of this song!
I play it a little bit differently but more or less like you said. I could never figure out the intro though. I'll try to put that part into my playing from now on!!! Great song, great lesson! Thank you!!!
Rafael Viana Thanks Rafael...glad it helped my friend!
Awesome lesson! Helped a lot!
Thanks for this one Steve. It’s certainly a work out, and a crowd pleaser. Would love to see more song breakdowns. Great variety of content
Matty Tee Thanks Matty!
Awesome vid brotha thanks and don't mind my reference note 3:35
this is great... I didn't realize a ghost note ... but now I have the whole picture... and I think he put the hi hat on the third kick and then he move to the toms in the beginning of the chorus ... when he play live...
You could also just click the hi-hat with your foot on the 8th notes. That's a nice exercise in limb independence.
The best training or my foot was playing the album Believe by Disturbed in its entirety. The songs are normally played with a double kick. My Hero is a piece of cake after mastering Believe :)

Scentless Apprentice has a beat some like this too. Very kick drum heavy.
Do more videos like this!!!
Matheus Luiz Got a lot planned this year. Glad you dig it Matheus!
Love this thanks! So hard though being a beginner 😅
Wow. Sound spot on. I always thought thought there was another dubbed hi hat
Feel those beats !!! 🥁 ❤️ 🤘
I'm a drummer in a Foo Fighters tribute band....a lot of the songs have a busy kick drum!!
Thanks man! Bad ass as always!!!
Jimmy Dunn You bet Jimmy
stephen this was a really informative video thank you so much for your analysis! i was actually hoping you could do a similar break down of the song "out of my head" by canadian band 'mobile' i havent been able to figure out the opening snare/hihat groove and a full song breakdown would be awesome since they are a very underrated band and there doesnt seem to be much if at all on youtube, thanks

Very good very good 👏👏👏👏👏
How do you keep the kick steady and accurate and powerful with the 16s on your foot though? I get so tired and messy with it
