You're very welcome! Really informative lesson - in fact this idea of assembly lines, this was total news to me, and it's a super cool tool. In fact all 3 in conjunction are super interesting. Thanks a ton!
No joke, I just watched this whole video and I don’t even play drums. I don’t own a drum set and don’t plan to anytime in the future. I just found the whole thing super interesting, the way you break it all down. You’re a great teacher! 💯🙌
Yes!!!! I am not a beginner. Been on the road in the past and still have always struggled with this topic. I have looked for years on help to incorporate rudiments. Love the system/zone! You have earned a sub + purchase from this one video.
"It gives us the palette to create. Everyone has the same colours, it's how we use them..." The demonstration at around 20:20 was cool and all, and I really dig the system, but I rewound to replay that little quote because that's what really got me. Subscribed.
I also really appreciate the way you've instructed to break down your kit into the zones. That idea is one that I would call "perfect pitch" for drumming
You are an absolutely magnificent teacher, I am a beginner drummer and Blind, I have no problems following your instructions… Thank you so much and looking forward to practising this… Love learning gnu sticking patterns/chunks… Love how you count out the timing also👏🏼💖💖🥰😘
Without a doubt one of your best lessons in my opinion Stephen! I've caught lessons of yours over the years through Drumeo, UA-cam, etc but this one really clicked with me. The system you teach here is great and I'm looking forward to applying it to my learning going forward.
it was eye opening, finally got to see how this para diddle comes in to play that I practice over and over, Ive learned how to finally understand how to move around the drums and found out thats its ok to break up a para diddle and use different zones. its awesome Im not bored with the drums again and can be creative with this to no end. Just what I needed, thanks you so much im over a huge hump drums are fun again. Finally someone that could explain this to beginners in a way that made since, when just learning how to play you dont understand how a song is played on the drums you hear it but always new there was more but you explain the rules of how to bring it all together. ha ha ha not embarrassed when others can hear me play now, almost sounds like I know what im doing. Finally get to see and hear my own character and be able to listen and know its me playing or not in my way and style i like to play, you can start to become your own instead of playing what others play and comparing yourself to other music and using that as benchmarks of your skill level are over now. felt like the karate kid did learming wax on wax off with that paradiddle, practiced it over and over asking myself wtf am i doing this and where does it come in to play, not in a marching band so i now can see! Your awesome Steve. thanks for the GREAT CHRISTMAS GIFT STEVE! Merry Christmas btw.
Dang after I wrote my comment I took a couple minutes to scroll through the other comments and it seems I’m not the only one who recognizes your skills as an instructor! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a UA-cam video w/ this many wholeheartedly POSITIVE comments. That by itself is an achievement. But with this kind of response from viewers, I hope you do private lessons and make bank doing it (top tier -per hour- rates would be 100% justified) because you deserve to be highly rewarded for being able to give people these precious jewels of knowledge. That is all I had to say. Have a blessed day bro! ✌️
Your teaching on paradiddle is very interesting. For some of us drummers, we're just happy to do the basic paradiddle which is: Right+left-right+right, and left+right- left+left.. Thank you for this lesson, I will explore this a little more.
Stephen. Thank you so much! I played snare in high school and learned a ton of rudiments. They’ve all stuck with me, but I never took the time to be able to apply them to this kit. Now at 51, and with your help, I’m really having fun with this. Great system! I tell my worship team at church that I’m good being the backup to the backup drummer. Maybe soon I’ll feel comfortable as the back up! :) Many thanks!
Love this man! I am 58 years, taking lessons and drumming my butt off. I am absorbing as much as I can but practicing slow and building in. Really like the explanations. Thanks!
Ever since I started learning to play the drum kit about 2 years ago I had a feeling there was a basis systematic way to get comfortable with drum fill improv. Your concepts of chunking, zoning, and assembly line make perfect sense. Thanks for explaining that!
I’ve watched so many videos on UA-cam to learn different techniques and YOU are the best teacher I’ve ever seen. Your explanations and skill and style just makes things click for me. From your mnemonic devices to your humor makes me want to play. Thank you for these lessons.
You're amazing, the way you explain things make them so easy to understand even for a beginner like myself. You have passion for teaching and that means all for students. Started watching you 1 month ago and you've changed the way I see the journey of learning and practicing in the drums.
I just stumbled across your channel, Stephen. These are amazing teaching techniques. I have been playing paradiddles since the 1960s, and I never saw this particular method of application. And yet, it is so rudimentary and musical. You are my new favorite online teacher! I very much appreciate your teaching technique. We simply never stop learning!
Totally relate to your opening comment regarding the "gig bag..practice bag" Have you ever found yourself in a gig situation, and the practice bag licks just come out w/out thinking? If I force something from the practice bag, more than likely I'll screw it up. When I'm warmed up, feeling the tunes, I'll notice those licks from the practice bag showing up. I also am loving all the Bonham stuff! He's the reason I picked up sticks, and growing up playing mostly Zep stuff, it really made me a more musical player. Learning tunes came so much faster to me as a kid. Now I'm breaking it down, and cleaning it up (thanks in pt to you). I feel if you can play Bonhams stuff as he played it, you can play just about anything.
I started learning drums only a couple of months ago and your lessons are helping so much!! Chunking and assembly lines are by far the best way I've been able to learn. Thanks a TON!
Excellent video. Clean, well produced, great teaching method. Did I mention this video is EXCELLENT. I'm recommending you for a raise effective immediately. I'm taking these ideas and putting them in to my routines. Thanks again.
I am a drumming instructor also. I did a whole written out lesson on the application of the single paradiddle for the kit. I think that Stephen did a SUPERB job here explaining and demonstrating. He also did not try to show off. He did an excellent job. Bravo!
Great job Sir Stephen, you are a Good teacher keep it up I learn a Lot from you just for free unlike others they hungry for my credit card, Godbless you and your family
Stephen. It started to get alittle spacey and I thought we were going to lose you but you pulled it all together with the Zones. I was feeling boxed in and this will be a great way to practice many beats. You are the man. Thank you.
Thanks so much, have learnt more here in 45 mins ,then any other time watching other vids.has a 52 year old who started playing last year I need all the help I can get,.pleas pleas keep them coming.....
Just blows me away with how much sense it makes to me. Makes me wish I was younger and learning a system like this. Very grateful for the insight and practical method for correct practice. Many Thanks...much respect...Cheers
thanks for the insight in how to structure my practice time, I'm over forty and the thought of learning(truly learning) how to play on a set is a little overwhelming, but the zoning and assembly line system really helps to move me forward
Mystery solved finally a path over the hump. Now I have some real work to do. Thank you so much! I’ve not been this exited about a concept in a very long time.
Wow, you really opened my eyes so I can see so many opportunities to be more creative as a drummer Right now I'm more than grateful for this lesson. Keep calm and groove hard!
This has been a super helpful lesson for me. Being self taught and having half learned too many things this bring an organized focus to my practice . Thanks so much for all you do Stephen 🙏🏻
Thank you very much for the very interesting lesson I liked your method it makes order on the one hand and on the other hand opens up the possibility for the drummer to creat
The way you teaching it's so clear.makes things impossible for me to play before very enjoyable now after some time spend on practice 🤝 huge satisfaction 😀🥁🏋️ Thank you!!
This is exactly what I am looking for currently. My teacher introduced me to Paradiddles a few Months ago and my practice is already lacking just because I never know what to do with this thing behind the kit. You messing around in your zones looks so fricking simple, I'm jealous! Thank you very much for this lesson.
Great stuff Stephen. Systematic learning is essential to becoming well rounded drummer and musician. Your method requires, focus, discipline and routine. That foundation leads to musical freedom and individual identity for each player. You are right on brother. Thanks for sharing. GT Albright
Stephen , just came across this and I feel I have my next six month challenge - Thank you. I'm old, a slow learner (their is benefits in having to take it slow and you'd probably agree with that!) but I get what you say and I look forward to achieving this milestone in my playing (not that I get to do any where near as much practice as I would like :-( ). Appreciate everything you do to pass on your skills to all of us wanting to learn.
yeah i agree, this guys method and approach is really easy to apply to the drums, also try rob brown's video's on you tube, he is a super good teacher for this kind of stuff.
At last Stevo I've my home Studio together with a Portable PA & Pro Metranome to play to riffs recorded from our Bass player from the Blues club to Groove to & of course have my Laptop with all your great lessons to play along too !! HAPPY DAYS BUDDY !
Stephen, you inspire me so much. I am a better drummer because of you.I always make a point to watch your vids -- no matter what. In my busy life, I don't always make the time to sit down and work through it all the way, but man-o-man, even if I get just a couple of the moves you roll out, and even if I don't *perfect* them, I still realize that I am learning much, Your teaching still powerfully moves my drumming along the page. Sorry, I am only a "freebie" subscriber. I really really appreciate your heart and your generousity!!! \0/
Ho Lee Sheet You made my day. Truly. Thank you so much for letting me know how much the lessons have helped you. Humbling and inspiring to me, I assure you of that.
Thank you for this video. I played drums from 9 years (16 to 25) and am, just getting back into it again (now I am 5 0). This is very helpful (luckily I can read sheet music).
Thanks!! This is the type of advice and system I need to take another step in my playing. I learn rudiments in sticking but fail to get them into applying them on the kit unless something just hits me or I see it or hear it applied (like on utube) I think this may really help me expand my kit vocabulary.
I actually learned application of the paradiddle in groove waaaay back in da late 60’s behind Gregg Errico n Sky’s You Can Make It If You Try. The drum break is a coldblooded paradiddle applied across what’s basically your zone 4. However this lesson is slick because it has this ‘system’ which becomes like a one size fits all thing across the rudimentary process. It adds or rearranges notes to create new permutations of the same thing. This diverging versatility is key because while I’ve had lil to no prollum applying the paradiddle life ain’t quite dat easy fo me othawise (i.e double strokes, ratamacues...etc). Stuff either lacks power/volume or it seemingly remains in my practice bag indefinitely soon to be a home fo misfit rudiments! I’ll keep working. You’re my friend I’ve never met. You n like maybe 2 other cats. You’ve all helped define and further elucidate things I’ve been playin all my life. Thanks always man!!!!
The creative spark comes from an organized repetitive method which is engraved in your muscle memory.

great information as usual
Thank you for this video. I played drums from 9 years (16 to 25) and am, just getting back into it again (now I am 5 0). This is very helpful (luckily I can read sheet music).
Glad it helped... and welcome back to the family!
Love the lesson.... do you have a lesson on playing the paradiddle faster? I will buy it if you have one.
Awesome lesson!!!
That’s SLY as in Sly and the Family Stone
So glad the content has helped my friend!
Mind. Blown. Thanks, Stephen. I've significantly improved just off this lesson.
