the only rule i stick with is the “you actually need to know the band” rule. im not saying you need to know their entire discography or band members, but i’d say the band needs to feel like it has had some impact on your life. even if you only know five songs by a band, those songs might be life changing and the band deserves to be recognized because of their impact to you.
Agreed!
yeah. Honestly, to me it doesn't make much sense to wear things from bands you don't listen to. Like you said, it doesn't have to be everything they ever released.
You’re definitely really cool
Exactly what i was thinking!
I agree 1,000%! I'm not gatekeeping but I cannot tell you how many times I've had it out with posers that wear this gear to look cool and for fashion. That's like walking around wearing a swatzstika t-shirt because "the other kids are doing it" crap and not caring and/or knowing what it all intales. I'm hoping that one day, these posers decide to finally take the "plastic bag" challenge. I can tell that she actually loves the music and I would not include this creator as being a POSER neither.
The only rule is; there are no rules, only guidelines! The great thing about vests is that no two vests are alike. It's awesome to see other people's vests, you may actually be inspired by them!
so it's ok to have majority non band patches?
@@RunaSunset yeah, but you can't really call it a battle vest if the bands aren't the main thing
@@RunaSunset you can call it whatever you want ;)
@@RunaSunset My old jacket had lot's of political slogans as well but u gotta have plenty of bands as well!
"The code is more what you'd call guidelines..." - Captain Barbossa
Number 1 rule is the jacket or vest is a reflection of YOU !!! It does not have to be covered with just band patches... It's supposed to tell your story...One should get to know you based on your jacket and DON'T WORRY ABOUT WHAT OTHERS ARE DOING !!!! ✌🏻❤️
I have a Scotland flag, socialist fist, Liverpool FC badge and nickname patch on mine
@@magicsteve5523 then your not wearing a metal battle vest...its sonething else...its a pride vest or somethin.
@@Runswithwolves6323 battle vests are battle vests even if theyre not entirely metal bands. my battle vest has bands but it also has horror poster patches and a couple badges of my favourite media.
@@tarmatrofi Im an old school metalhead dude and Im here to tell YOU that aint a battle vest.It was meant for band symbolism only.Whatever the hell youre sportin aint that. How old are you.because Im guessin youre pretty young which explains alot!
@@Runswithwolves6323 who cares if im young, i listen to the older metalheads around me who know that its a "do whatever the fuck you want" culture. my dad and uncles whove been in the scene since they were kids have battle vests from the 80s, and you bet they arent solely metal patches. my dad has an amityville horror patch on his collar and mrs voorhees cleaver on the back of the neck. doesnt make it any less of a battle vest, considering the things plastered in metal band patches from concerts. its more metal to not gaf about what other people do than to police others on what they can and cant call their stuff. but hey, im a 17 so what do i know lol
The only rule is that it MUST be unique to you and that no-one else can tell you what to put on or do to your vest.
I’ve got a Iron Maiden - Maiden England 88 back patch and I’m going to be putting a big VanHalen patch on the back above it.
Yes! I love seeing how creatively unique battle vests can get! 🤘🏻
I mean, if you actually saw the video you would see that all of these "rules" aren't actually rules, they're more just tips, ideas and info about what other people think. And a lot of "do whatever you like, it's your vest"
But yeah maybe should have used a different word other than rules.
ur allowed to use influence tho the spike and stud patter i chose for mine i got straight of google
I think I'd do one with classical music composers. Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, vivaldi
Shit I had the same Idea....Johann Gerhard..."Praise the lord - tour 1655"
Wonder if they allow a classic music battle vest in the opera house?
@@Dilley_G45 that would be awesome
Some say Blue Cheer and Hendrix, maybe even Dick Dale was the first metal invented. But really Wagner was the first metal composer!!!!
I would do that on a coat with tails
The only rule is no rules. Punk culture is about doing what the fuck you want and putting rules breaks that code
actually Punk culture is hypocritical conformism but you can go ahead and keep thinking that
This comment makes me so happy....im about to make the worst "battle jacket" most people will ever come across! The only punk I have in me is.....I don't give a fuck that I'm the only one that will like it! Otherwise I'm just a middle aged hippie with interesting taste levels!! I'm so fucking excited for it
But that's a rule. Paradox.
@@TiggmuffinYour jacket will be the best because it will be about you. I'm intrigued! What are you putting on it and is it finished yet?
Rules are made to be broken.
I really like how this isn't actually a set of rules but rather a great information video about battle vests so that people can decide for themselves what they want to do! Super informative, thank you!
Horror movie patches are pretty metal too...
Hell yeah!
I've had my main vest (pretty much filled with my favourite bands) for a few years and it's gone through so much different looks. Now that concerts are back I can express myself properly 🤘
I just started working on my first one. The name? “Shit I like”. It’s just a combination of things I like! It’s my first one ever and I’m still just a kid, but I’ve gotta start somewhere!! It’s good to see that so many people are open to the definition on a battle vest. I’m looking forward to putting more work into mine :)
Mine is about 98% complete now I just finished up the back took me 14 hours counting breaks.... Well worth it! Being a black man and loving metal also being a musician I get plenty of looks and admiration then when I hit them with the knowledge it's a huge conversation piece!
Im old school myself and while I havent known a lot of black metal heads Ive definately known a few and wish there were more! Can we just agree that youre a metal head and not a "black" metal head...Im so sick of that bein thrown in...js.
@@Runswithwolves6323 Well it happens to be both, it's a bit of a unicorn scenario not as much as 2008 when I became a metal head and we are growing!
When I was younger, I had a Devil's Rejects tee that I made into a back patch for my first battle vest. I personally really loved it.
I have a horror/ metal vest. Patches I love. No rules me being an individual
I'm making a horror movie vest, and I have a section dedicated to my close friends favorite horror movies. I may not like them, but it's kinda like carrying a piece of them with me.
I’m working on a sort of battle vest for a costume (long story), but I’m also intending it to be a functional piece that I can wear around so I’d like to do it right without it being disingenuous, so I’ve been looking into them properly, and it’s been really interesting learning more about the culture surrounding them. I’m actually angling more toward the punk aspect of things but the overlap is fascinating to me
making my first vest and i’m this close to slapping on a cutesy Sanrio (hello kitty) patch on it to spite the people gatekeeping what can and can’t be on a vest (for clarification i’m not talking about you!)
Do it!!!
Go for it! I'm in the process of making mine, and I've got a t-rex fossil, decepticon patch, and Halloween bat.
Honestly I just find it difficult for myself to wear and/or make a vest mainly because I want the patches/pins/etc to be high value, rare and overall special. Which is near impossible considering id have to cover a vest with everything special lol
Ah a true collector’s vest! Yes that would be amazing. Though I would probably be too anxious about wrecking something with rare and valuable patches.
I love your channel btw. Let me know if you ever want to collab! 🤘🏻
@@JJMetalhead oh wow why thank you !
hit me up on instagram if you're really up for that
A wyatt out in the wild
Back in the days I had just one rule: I had to see the band LIVE before the patch is going to the vest....Well, after some time, I just went with the "I like it"-rule, so basically everything goes. lol
It`s cool to see people that care about what they represent in their vests or clothes. Ive seen people with band t shirts and when i went to talk to them about it they have no clue about anything! What a bummer!
I`m making more of a mess vest, with band, hippie, prog and custom patches all over it! I iron and then sew them on tight, i dont wanna risk losing anything! Same goes for adding tape on the back of the pin badges i have, the tape has been saving them from doom since 2013.
If you spray your vest down with a 1:1 mix of vodka and water after the show or the next day it will cut down on the smell. This is a theatre trick I stand by. :)
Hmm, good to know! But it doesn't leave you smelling like vodka, does it?
@@JJMetalhead Not if you mix it with even lart water and use a spray bottle. It will smell a bit when you first spray it down but if you leave it to dry and air out the smell will fade.
I have washed costumes in vodka mix before and they weren't smelly after drying.
Who's got Vodka left after a show
im a newbie to making vests but it's so fun and a cool way to just express yourself and i can't wait to go hunting for more patches/pins whenever i have extra money :D
Re: Rule Number 2: Needs Band Patches
Battle Jackets didn't start within the music scene. If you followed the logic of saying that Battle Jackets must have bands in order to be a battle jacket, then it would be equally valid to say that all the metal and punk scene battle jackets aren't "real" battle jackets because they're not being covered in Air Squadron insignia patches as they were originally.
Gate keeping battle jackets is just a bad look. Wear what styles you like, flaunt what bands you like. Make a Hello Kitty battle jacket for all I care, it's not our job to tell anyone their style is wrong.
Hmm I think you may have misinterpreted my meaning. Of course vests with various patches originated from the military and motorcycle scene. Punks later adopted the style and then metalheads followed suit. However, as far as my understanding goes, the term “battle vest/battle jacket” in the modern sense goes refers to vest heavily laden with band patches. Of corse there are other sorts of patch jackets, but I am specifically talking about vests as it refers to rock and metal music. I don’t think anyone wearing a vest with hello kitty patches would declare it a “battle vest” despite how it might resemble one. Semantics, I know, but I think its important to clarify. My intent is certainly not to gate keep battle jackets and I apologize if it came off that way. My bottom line is do whatever you want with your battle vest. The “rules” title is shameless clickbait. 🤘🏻
I think the “rule” should be expanded to the patches should have some sort of meaning/connection to you, because I think of a battle jacket as an extension of you, to show everyone what you like and what you’re interested in. but I agree that a jacket with a bunch of random patches that have no meaning or connection to the owner, doesn’t count as a battle jacket
No Rules! I do custom jackets for people regularly. Love taking their ideas and giving them back something amazing.
In ‘81 I moved from London into a small town & in my new school I was the only Mod amongst a mass of New Romantics. The only 7 Metal Heads took me under their wing, introduced me to heavy metal & took me to see Motörhead in ‘82 but made me a ‘battle jacket’ from their spare patches as I only had a parka & a Harrington.
Since then I’ve had 3 ‘battle jackets’, 2 denim & 1 leather, but lost the lot over the past few years & I’m in the process of making a new one.
So jealous you got to see Motörhead! It’s a shame you don’t have your old vests, but let me know how the new one turns out!
@@JJMetalhead absolutely gutted to have lost them. Patches, so far, include Motörhead (of course), Amon Amarth, Iron Maiden & a couple Military & Fire Service ones….might add a Snoopy one too 🤣
Watching this to prepare to make a battle vest and when I saw the coheed patch I almost freaked out with happiness! It looks awesome and now I’m definitely going to put a keywork on mine!
ha ha ....theme vests ? ! In the 80's, I didn't care or think about any "themes". I just got the patches of the bands who I liked. ..on my first vest @ age 15, I had Metallica, Mercyful Fate, Queensrÿche, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest and other bands as Loudness and Kreator......no theme @ all ....ha ......BUT now .....if I wanted to get a new vest, I would most possibly make it all Norwegian extreme metal bands vest.
Sounds like a kick ass vest!! And you can definitely fill an entire vest with all those Norwegian metal bands out there!
@@JJMetalhead Yeah. Totally.... I just hate that Now Days LOL ..anyone can buy any custom made Metal vest or leather jacket ....I was like, WTF! ha ha .... they do look so cool and ev everything. but the Spirit of the 80's are not there. You know what I mean? I would probably buy one just cause I don't know how to use a sewing machine ha ha
this video was great to show my older daughter to design her first vest, my partner and I are building battle jackets with each kid with acts we've seen together and a little bit of each girls and our personalities
I’m not really into this type of style, I have a friend with this amazing battle jacket, it’s so cool and I love his style, he ran out of space on the jacket so he started adding patches to his pants :)
I loved the idea of taking a jacket and just covering it in patches and pins and just stuff that shows who you are and just the idea of battle jackets being this big grouping of things you like on a jacket, and after looking more into battle jackets, I kinda want to make something sort of like one, but in my own style. Just all the stuff i like all over a customized jacket! It just seems like it would look great and i’d love being able to make it my own, and it would be like a fun project for me to do. I don’t really know if it counts as a battle jacket if it’s not in the type of style that they’re usually in, but whatever you’d call that, it would definitely be inspired by battle jackets if I decide on actually making one :)
I've been a metalhead for 19 years and been meaning to start one for a while, the hardest part though is finding a suitable vest in the first place haha
Yeah agreed. I got one at a thrift store and I found another on Amazon.
Drowned in Black sells really nice vests. They're expensive but probably the best you'll find.
Yeah, that's the issue of having right now
In the late 80s and early 90s we didn't call them a battle vest and there were no rules. You just put on the bands you liked. A lot of homemade patches, inkpens, markers, paint pens, airbrush, etc. You're over complicating it.
That's how it should be!!! That's the way it is for me. My vest my rules
More catchy than calling it a vest with a shit ton of patches
I dunno, dude; I like the name Battle Vest. But as a kid of the 80s and 90s, I totally feel ya with the homemade patchwork and anything bootleg, man! Cheers, bro!
I don't think you guys watched the video
You can't make rules about this stuff everyone does things their own way
I’ve worn vests for about 7 years now. The most I would do is a pin on the collar if I’m feeling it that day. This year though I’m all in on a vest with patches from every concert I’ve been to. I’m now realizing however that is very eclectic. But it’s a window into my musical soul so I don’t mind everyone seeing my Behemoth patch with my Blue October one and my Def Leppard patch under that. All memories I’ll cherish forever. Especially my Sabbath one. The End was awesome.
People stare at me when I wear my all babymetal & Nickelback vest
perhaps I should wear pants too
😂
Don’t conform man
If I like even “one” song of the band.. I put the patches on! I don’t even know the entire album, I don’t memorize the lyrics, I dont even know the band members name.. I just like their one song… That’s it!
Hell yeah! Do it the way you want!!
Y'all need to relax. She's just giving tips for starting. She's not saying these are the law. A lot of people don't have people in their life to bring them into metal culture. Watch the video or don't. But ultimately keep your superiority complexes to yourself.
This makes sense. I thought battle vests were only for bands you've seen live, but I guess you could wear whatever you want.
Definitely agree it should be artists you listen to, I can't imagine why someone would put patches on for groups they don't care for
I hope to make my own battle jacket with not just my fav bands, but my fav cartoon characters as well
I am a old school Metalhead from Germany since the 80s and there were some rules back than that,I would say, make some sense. But at the end of the day,who cares about rules! The ones that I have for myself are ...
- Of course you have to know and like the Band and the album or song that it shows.
- Your Backpatch should represent your favorite band/album.
- Saw it yourself by hand to appreciate it more and have a deeper connection with it.I never learned to do it,I just did.I mean come on,thats not so hard!It don't have to look good.Only thing that matters is that it stays on!Where there is a will, there is a way! It's like the first money you actually earn by yourself, you appreciate that more too.
- Don't wash it!
Thats it! So thanks for the video,I liked it! It's nice to see that this tradition don't dies! And I have to say,I think girls wearing a Battle Vest are hot! 🤘😈🤘
Love that you're a Queensryche Fan.. Saw them during Rage for Order and Operation Mindcrime
Jealous! Bet that was a show!
I have bands and a few cryptids, and souvenir patches. I have this one from the NOC but it's the Grateful Dead logo.
my buddy has a vest that you dont only not see any of the original denim-blue on, but it is also bullet-proof. how he got it bullet-proof is that he is a carpenter, one day a bank wanted the company, that he works at, to do a bullet-proof front. they used a special kind of veneer-plywood, that is bullet-proof, but they didnt need all of it. somewhere at the end of production, my buddy came into work after being beaten into hospital, not to work there, but to see how his co-workers are doing. they had already finished the front, so the question was "how can we dispose the rest?", one co-worker said "you could make that vest bullet-proof with this stuff", which he then did.
he cut the wood into smaller pieces, replaced the filling of his vest with that wood and bam! his vest is now bullet-proof. he just doesnt wear it in mosh-pits, as it is not only stupidly heavy, but if you knock on it, you will feel the bullet-proof inlays.
This sounds too awesome to be true, but I trust it’s the truth because that’s awesome!!
I just cut my sleeves off my denim jacket and want to make my own battle vest thanks 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I just bought my first battlevest and i'm filling it up with my favorite bands. Mostly Thrash and death. I don't think i'll ever take it off. 😅
That's the idea. Wear it forever and treasure it as its your story.
Currently in the process of making mine, and it's going to be a real Frankenstein monster with the different subgenres I'm putting on it :') I've got concert tickets for next year and I'm stupidly excited to be wearing it!
(edit: I'm adding a couple of non-band related items on mine too, since I'm heavily into fps gaming. It fits in nicely imo)
Im gonna make my own in the near future! Gonna make a denim one and a leather one with one big logo on the back. Combining it with a nice shirt, vinyl jeans and patent leather boots and it looks metal as hell!
Sounds awesome!!
this is really helpful cause i just outgrew my battle vest I made in middle school and I really dont want my new vest to look like my old one (It didnt look all that great) so I tore apart my old vest to salvage the patches i had gotten from concerts and the ones that were sentimental to me to put on a new, bigger and more expressive vest. i really appreciate this video for inspo.
Glad I could inspire! Let me know how the new vest turns out.
I’ve got three one is 80s themed just a plain blue one with all my favourite band patches and pins and sleeveless, one is a biker leather jacket with a few patches and pins and my last one is a black denim jacket with sleeves and is themed after more modern bands that were about more in the late 90s to current day
They sound badass! Especially the leather biker one!
@@JJMetalhead thanks, I really like your jackets too they are awesome
im an 18 year old girl who has just started getting into rock and metal music. Thank you sm for this video, you seem so incredibly cool. And if anyone has any music suggestions i would appreciate it!
Although mainstream, I would check out the first Metallica album: Kill ‘em All has some great stuff for their debut all the way to Ride the Lightning. I personally like their material from all over, but the 80’s stuff is certainly the best imo.
Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, Iced Earth, Sodom, Sabaton, Judas Priest, etc are also some great bands. Lots of it may not be for you and that is perfectly understandable, it’s all about experimentation to see what kind of metal you do like. Keep rockin’, man!
One of my rules is to not have 2 patches by the same band, with the only exception being like, if you had a Misfits logo patch above a Crimson Ghost skull, because they kind of come together as like a "compound patch".
Hey I’m a decently new dude coming into the punk community (I’ve been a punk since about 5th grade, but I’m in 7th so im decently new still) and I was thinking of making a battle jacket (I have a whole layout made and I think it’s sick), and this was pretty helpful, I’m not gonna like follow the rules verbatim but a lot of them were pretty helpful to beginners. I’ve been meaning to make one of these, especially because I went to my first festival earlier this year, so genuinely thanks for the guidelines!! Aside from the rules I’m probably gonna put a lil pronouns patch (or I’ll paint it) above one of the pockets (she/her) , I’m gonna stud and spike it to death and back and I’ll probably paint the “back patch” onto the jacket myself (one of the Uno, Duos or Tre album covers from Green Day, I really enjoy their music) !! Thanks again for the helpful vid, and rock on ^^
Starting on my first battle vest today! I'm planning on doing it for bands I've seen live.
Torn between using my custom squid back patch that isn't related to any bands or getting a band patch. All my other patches will be metal bands but I think I like the squid because it's my favourite animal so it's kind of a bit of my personality on the jacket
The squid sounds cool! Let me know how it turns out!
I'm currently making my first battle vest! I didn't know they were supposed to have themes and just put a whole bunch of random stuff on it,, I'm waiting to start making my own patches to add to it because I don't have enough money for it. I have some writings on it, my name on the back, a leather face and oogey boogey sticker, googly eyes, spikes, thumbtacks, I also drew the bad religion symbol and wrote the name below it, and I wrote “I am a child of war“ with “DOGS IN THE FIGHT“ under it, and I cut off the sleeves and cut up the collar so it looks worn down! I love it with all my heart and it's like my little baby. I plan on making crust pants or cutting up some pants to make shorts.
I've also been watching a bunch of punk d.i.y videos and learning about new and old bands so I don't seem like a poser because I'm new and don't want to piss off older punks :) I love this community
Sounds like an awesome vest! I'm not very familiar with punk music, but punk vests always look really cool.
Some people say there are rules about what to put on one, or there should be a theme, or don't have more than two patches for the same band. Whatever! It's your jacket so put what you like on it. It's unique to you, what you love and it sounds amazing.
I'm about to do my 1st battle jacket ever, got my jacket and been collecting patches and got rly hyped about it but on the other head I'm kinda worried about beeing called a poser or not taken seriously by other metalheads... I literally listen to everything: from Core to underground BM & nearly everything that's in between and that's kind of the thing I wanna express with my jacket but I guess I'll get more negative than positive feedback for that... can anyone explain why some ppl get so pissed when you don't seperate genres or what's the point behind that?
Of course "do your own thing" is the most important thing but getting disrespected that much in the scene you love... I'm rly unsure now
I don’t understand why people like to keep the subgenres separate. Of course I like some genres better than others, but it’s a fool who only listens to one. Most metalheads I know listen to a broad spectrum of subgenres.
Your jacket sounds cool! Let me know how it turns out!
Some people get very snobby about battle jackets and say you must have a backpatch, it should only have one genre on it and only one patch for each band, or you can make a tribute jacket where all the different patches are for the same band. But those people are missing the point of a jacket. It's to show what the person wearing it loves. Most of us love different sub genres of metal, it doesn't make us any less "metal"! Your jacket should reflect who you are and what you love, that's the most important thing. So put what you like on there and wear it with pride. Please let us know how you get on.
Do we have to put a band in our battle vest? Kind of feel like we should just put whatever on it
In my opinion there are no specific diehard-rules, but important is for a battlevest is, that it represents your metal-music-taste in the first place. And if official from bands or not is not important - more important is, if they are woven! Sticked patches are also fine. But printed patches are not fine because they bleach out after a while and don't look that good. Woven patches are better and fits more to a jacket because both are cloth.
And totally agree with backpatch to represent the favorite band or one of the favorite bands.
But having more than one battlevest I'd have the problem which battlevest I would wear on festivals etc.
And I agree with being creative! Another good idea beside buttons, spikes etc. is shaping woven patches to add more on the battlevest and fill gapes.
Washing battlevest: only if you take down the patches.
I know how to sew and when kids saw me doing it in high school I was called a woman and told I was guy, I told them my dad taught me how to sew and he learned during basic training for the Green Berets. He learned to kill and be a seamstress 🤣 crazy dude.
Everyone in the military learns how to sew as they have to be able to repair their uniform.
@@yourmetalsister2958 ok and...?
watching a bunch of videos as I make my own vest INSPIRED by battle vests. I don't listen to metal or even a lot of rock but back in 2019 and 2020 I started a jacket for myself to wear full of paintings and pins that meant a lot to me. It's mostly political and just generally things I enjoy. I have friends who do listen to this music and have vests like this so recently decided to re-do mine with recent issues and new patches I've collected that I did not have the first time. I don't currently own patches of any bands I like but do have one from my favorite author, one that is dnd related, and one of a musical I like. Hoping to find/make some patches for The crane wives, Chappell Roan, Marina, Lemon Demon, Will Wood, The Dresden Dolls, Mother Mother, and some other musicals I love. does anyone know where I would be able to find these?
Edit: making mine as colorful as possible and the entire back is painted with my pride flags as a base. getting it ready enough for a concert coming up of a band I don't know well but it's my girlfriend's favorite band. Wanting my clown vest ready to wear among the battle jackets.
My vest is alot of industrial but then again I've got Bugs Bunny alongside Skinny Puppy, and then MF Doom, Cypress Hill, 3rd Bass and Public Enemy across the way from Rancid, Crass, and The Residents. Unless a person is determined to live a monolithic life, I should think someone who would wear a battlevest in the first place would have more than one singular interest to represent themselves with. Love 🖤
Your jacket sounds awesome and exactly what it should be, a representation of you and what you love.
imagine having to name three songs for each band patch to appease every Incel in the wild.
Cool video! Even though i don't wear battle jacket just because i don't have money to have all the patches i want to ahahahahaha
I feel ya, they can get EXPENSIVE!!
I had to go though a compiling process. But you can always start small and add to it when you can.
Fyi, I was able to find several at wish dot com, they just take a long time to arrive. Also places like amazon and Wal-Mart dot com.
@@JJMetalhead why u not an Official Artist Channel yet?
I love what you said about washing it. I really think we need to keep gatekeeping to a bare minimum, because even though us metalhead all enjoy the same music, we are not all the same kind of person.
A lot of people assume that metalhead are all unkept. But that’s not me, I actually have OCD lol …. So I’m kind of a germaphobe. And I always like my room to be clean in order. I can’t even stand it if there’s like a sock on my floor.
But does that make me any less of a metalhead? No. I have no shame in washing my vest, and I don’t think other people should either. My battle vest is not something I just wear to concerts, it’s something I wear around everywhere, so I don’t wanna be wearing around a stinky vest.
“we’re all just a bunch of rebels here… RULE number six…”
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Girl… you aren’t even NURSING that Boones Farm. You better pipe down and get to chugging!
Rule number six.
Shut up and “Baptize “ that battle vest! 😂
Nothing says metal like rules 😂
I"m a dude who learned how to sew for this very reason. My sewing is so solid that I machine wash my vest with no issues.
So, for me I have been collecting patches at shows and will be doing the" only bands Ive seen live" vest.I have a decent chunk of patches, but havent picked an actual vest yet.
Metallica, White Zombie, Pantera, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Ozzy Osbourne, Lacuna Coil, Nirvana, Rammstein, GNR, The Birthday Massacre, The Cure, Ministry....this 90's headbanger kicks it old school!
Where did you get that beautiful Gojira Magma patch? 1:01
I'm starting my second vest, which will be of artists I've seen live. The back patch will be of Alice Cooper with painted tally marks of how many times I've seen him perform (5, about to be 6 in August). It'll have a mix of metal, classic rock, some rap, and even a homemade Johnny Mathis patch!
Badass! I like the idea of tally marks. I may have to steal that.
don't forget you can paint on your jacket too! i don't have one yet but my plan is to get a black denim vest and splash white and red fabric paint all over it, then sew patches overtop. it'll have studs and rhinestones also! thinking of starting with a nice big Rammstein patch/painting on the back, with my other band patches on the front :P
Sounds awesome!!
1) LOVE the Coheeed back patch. 2) GO PREDS!
got 4 vest , 3 all bands that I love and I add couple non band patches and pins , and last is a horror vest . i get both praise and hate and just looked at but dont care really it's my vest and I put in money and time sewing those patches, no iron ons ,all hand stitched.
I’m making one soon! Just with my favorite bands 👍
I Lolled at the love/hate intro at the beginning. Great vid, currently working on my first vest and it's starting to look really good 👍🏻🤘🏻
The name festival vest is good... But festival vestival is better!! Great vid this really helped, thanks!
Hahahah Festival Vestival... that's great, I'll have to use that!
Im (technically) a punk but I also listen to a bunch of other artists from a bunch of different genres but I grew up on ska punk and pop punk. Im making a battle vest because I have been wanting to make one for a while (I’m pretty young and kinda short so Im still not really allowed to go into a mosh pit but I have been really close to one before) I have been to a couple of shows but covid sorta ruined me going to ones. I decided to make one recently and I make my patches from fabric and cheap acrylic paint (works really well surprisingly) and sew them on myself. I am a musician and have been studying music since I was
around 6-7 years old) I am now in my schools marching band and want to start my own band someday.
Sounds awesome! Let me know how the vest turns out!
I have a devils card patch and several non band, but satanic themed patches. i guess the trend seems to be as long as it's evil? Also a tip for sewing patches on, Staple them on then sew them. It will hold them in place.
Huh. Never heard of the staple idea, but that’s genius!
I'm making my first ever battle jacket soon I got a denim jacket. I'm not going to cut off the sleeves though. and I'm going to make it with only black metal bands. I actually didn't buy any patches yet but I will soooon.
Sounds awesome! Let me know how it turns out! 🤘🏻
My first battle vest traces the history of Power Metal
And has patches of my favorite MLB teams on it

In regards to the sewing patches on yourself, at my first job, cashier at a drugstore, a dude came in wearing a (not super decked out) battle jacket, i complimented him on because hell yeah, bands i like! He thanked me and told me how he went to a seamstress to get them sewn on and i promotly gave him shit about that "oh yeah, that's really punk of you to pay someone else to do it :P" he laughed about it, and honestly, supporting skilled workers is very punk imo
I miss that dude
I got my vest signed by the guys from Mastodon plus their new addition Jao Nogueira. My back patch is emperor of sand.
Jealous!!! Sounds like an awesome vest.
I have a no rules vest
Does it have to be just metal/rock bands? Or can i add indie or reggae?
You can do whatever you want. You just might get a bit of raised eyebrows from the Metal community. But you do you!
GREETINGS FROM ARGENTINA!!
Lol timing, I was just thinking about redoing my battle jacket. It has all these old bands I don’t listen to anymore from when I first started listening metal and rock. I never listen to kreator and ac/dc anymore lmao
Your battle jackets are very nice; I especially like the black one with the classic metal patches (Saxon, Iron Maiden, etc.). Great video; I subscribed to the channel 👍🏻
Genuine question here: Would it be okay to make a battle vest for a cosplay? I'm doing a punk rock version of a character and think having one would be cool!
I have an old canvas jacket and I wanna make one with folk bands. Sufjan Stevens and Joey Cook.
Sounds epic!!
I have a leather vest I still don't have patched yet but I'm gonna get it patched, no specific themes just bands I enjoy and love, I'm also a biker so I'll probably have biker patches too, I do have 1 Outlaws MC member memorial patch and maybe even MC club support patches too
Sounds badass! Do bikers call their vest “battle vests” or do they have another name for them?
@@JJMetalhead no they don't, they usually call them "cuts" that's what MC members call them, I might call my personal one a battle vest but I'll probably be wearing my MC club one my cut if I join an MC one day
Love the powerwolf patch
Do you have to mosh to make a battle vest? Cus I’m starting to make one but I’m not allowed to go to any shows
Not at all! Make one! I hope you do make it to a show sometime though, they’re really fun.
I been looking for a queensryche patch
Thank you for your video and knowledge I’m building my 1st one It’s gonna be one that a ummm… best term I can use is it will be raced on the track then driven to the show and shine if that makes sense. Thank you
Does a jacket that is mostly the name of various bands stenceled on your jacket with a sharpie count as a battle vest? That's what I had in the 80's. It didn't occur to me there could be a nme for it.
I think that counts!
I’ve paid more money getting patches sewed on my jacket than I have paid for patches. My jacket is a mix of motorcycles, punk rock bands and Motörhead. Just as eclectic as my tattoos. I’ve been forced to wash it a few times so it wouldn’t end up in a biohazard bag. ☣️ There shouldn’t be any hard rules. Represent your self… unless you suck. If that’s the case, follow the rules and hope no one notices 🤙
Fuck rules, I have no rules. I just like making unique vests.
I don't wear my bands as a fashion statement. I listen to them. Idgaf if people know or not. And I don't wear battle vests because "it's cool" or because if you listen to metal it somehow means you need to dress a certain way. I wear a button down shirt and bright colored ties. No one would ever know I'm blasting meshuggah in my headphones.
Never judge a book by its cover is what I always say. I saw Meshuggah at Bloodstock last month, they were awesome. 🤘🤘
Hahaha funny your mention that because the Canadian band Skull fist the lead singer in fact has a vest he has worn many times with his bands back patch on it which is bad ass because ya should be proud of your band and the hard work you put into it...
Hello, do you know where I can buy a battlevest (without patches, i want to do them by myself)?
I found a couple of mine at a thrift store. The other I got on Amazon.
You don't have to specifically find a vest either. I got a denim jacket and cut the sleeves off.
Thrift!! Thrifting is a great way to find something affordable and good quality. You can just thrift a denim jacket in whatever color you please and cut the sleeves off.
Cuz everyone knows the most important part of rock n roll is following rules and doing the socially acceptable thing 😂
Hello JJ. Hope your day is rockin'. I'm kind of late in the game with the vest - always wanted one but just never got around to even put one together. Is it okay to have a seamstress do some of the patches or dare I say - all of them? 😬 I plan on putting the studs, the logos from cutout t-shirts myself including buttons and large safety pins though.
Yeah absolutely. Do whatever makes you a vest you’re proud to rock!
