For me personally it's important that I sew them on myself, because for me it's about the personal connection I have with the patches and the vest and the time invested, but I'm obviously not gonna judge anyone else for not doing it that way. It's your vest, you get to decide the rules.
"only if you've seen the band live" - I guess that's the most debatable rules, aside from "only one genre". That'd mean newer generations aren't allowed to represent some of their most favorite band's, just because these dinosaurs are either too old or simply dead.
Also it's not like some people are simply not well off enough financially to afford a 90€ ticket to their favourite artist

I don't know who you talking about. Because we went Slayer, the next to Mötley Crüe and than to Tina Turner. It was for me and my Friends normal. We have loved all, aslong it was real Music. And this is why we hate backthan New Metal Bands, because Samples and Synthetic produced Beats have nothing to do with Music. Most of my Friends think today other, they even listen to New Metal, I'm the one in my Crew who don't listen to New Metal. In German we say" Ich hasse Musik aus der Konserve"
I had no idea I was breaking so many rules! 🙄 I've got Punk, Goth, BM, Death, Industrial all mixed together 🤯. Madness! 🤪 ( I don't have a Madness patch though actually 🤔...)
I don't blame you! Get those patches on by any means necessary. When I got my first ever leather jacket, I used to just glue them on because i cba sewing through real leather 😄 no regrets, that would been such a pain. - Claire
Get on with ya bad self! There are a lot of really good fabric glues! I like "shoe glue" which is used for leather but works very well for patches and is permanent even if you wash it .
I think these rules are intended as a starting place and that's why their was multiple "don't be a dick, have fun" rules. The whole point is self expression
I'm still collecting patches, and bollocks to one style of music. I've got Maiden, Marley, Muse and Madness amongst others. Not to mention the vegan patches and random stuff like my cub scout badges from the early 80s 😂
Omg! Never washing it! After Download 2023 just could not leave that but I was ours on a regular basis. Sad thing though my cure patch faded but the rest were fine. I have sewn all my partners patches on! I saw something really lovely at Bloodstock 2023, a guy was sewing some patches (I assume he had just got from one of the stalls) onto his jacket in the arena just chilling on the grass in the sunshine. I'm with you guys on all of this.
Could not agree more that a battle jacket is meant to be a second skin of your personality. It's meant to invite others to be like, "Oh! You love that thing?! I also love that thing! Let's talk about that thing that we both love!" Sure, bands and music are the most traditional, but go ahead and put movie, tv show, or cartoon patches on if you've got them! Who cares?? It's uniquely yours!
You guys really made me feel better about this topic I was scared to put certain bands I liked when I start on a battle vest bc some i like aren’t exactly metal you know like suicidal tendencies or outta pocket 🙏
Yeah, biker cuts are something very different, they actually do have very strict rules. If you're not a 1%-er, you definitely don't want to 1% anything, you'll get hurt. 😂
Metal is a rebel music. Rules....are there. Pick up everyone that falls. Dont be an asshole. And no holding back in enjoying the music. Be respectful to women.
@ayysasuke I'm guessing you haven't watched the video mate. We're clearly taking the piss of out this article 😆 No one is in a position to decide what a 'real metalhead is'... Also - Ghost rullzzzzzzz sorry - Claire
Me having a bob marley patch on mine. Just simply bc I like him. I also have never seen any of my favourite bands life, simply bc I'm in school and I dont have the money. I break so many rules lol, but call me poser idk. I'm still getting into metal, so if someone has tips or important things to know I would appreciate it :) (til now I have like 5 patches on my jacket lol)
Slowly starting my First jacket/Battle Vest. There's no theme to it, just what I enjoy. Punk, Metal (all genres), Bear pride patch, Church of Satan patch, and horror films. There are no rules for my look or vest, to me it's about having fun with it.
I’m not sure if anyone but me has done this but recently I got a bestial war metal battle vest done professionally at a place that does patch work. Only reason I did it because I was feeling lazy to put some patches on and wasn’t feeling any motivation to do so. I do have another black metal vest where I did do hand sewing myself so at this point who cares how patches are done on a vest
I have rules, but they're for ME. My 1st one is: A band may only be represented once per jacket, at least in terms of patches. I may have a pin of the same band as a patch though, but I try not to.
Making my first ever battle jacket before I see Slipknot for the first time ever and I’m glad I learned these rules before hand lmao “literally sewing bands I’ve never seen live” lol
I say Phuck Off to "Battle Jacket Rules" as it is the perfect way to ruin something cool! I am Gen X where Metal heads and Punk kids hung out together in the 80s. Punk Rocks kids where going to Motorhead,Pantera and Slayer shows with their MC jackets which influenced what is now Battle Vests/Jackets also influenced by 70s and 80s Biker Culture. California Metal was huge with bands like Anthrax, Metallica,Megadeth and Supultera were huge even in their early days they played the Monsters of Rock in huge arenas in the 80s but played tiny venues everywhere else. Comercial patches were not available in the early years and we had no money to buy them if they were so we painted and stenciled DIY patches and had to order studs from a Tandy Leather catalog. @3:09 Imagine "The Battle Jacket Police" at shows?😂
Honestly, I don't care about the rules but I still never wore my jacket in public just because I'm afraid. Yes, my back patch is Green Day because I love them. Yes, I have bands like Joy Division, GN'R, Blue Öyster Cult, The Doors, Iron Maiden and Bowie on the same jacket. I also have some random stuff like diy Hamilton patch, pins and patches with things I like and so on. I don't know it it's even a battle jacket
I'm so sad you guys not wearing Brothers of Metal. and no Battle beast and Beast in Black... underrated pewermetal bands that rock so hard, especialy the new Brothers of Metal album Kicks ass..
Definitely disagree with rule 2.. but. An exclusive battle jacket with only bands you seen would be cool as a reminder to and show others who you've seen. Making my first Battle Jacket now ans was planning on that for my 2nd. Lets be honest too.. youre going to have more then one.

I make mine 1988 and it goes with me to 1500 Concerts. Every Patch on it was bought at Concerts ( Slayer, Morgoth, Napalm Death, Darkness, Risk,...) And every Band On my Battlevest signs it. And I don't wash it for 35 years. My new one was for around 40 Concerts with me and all Patches are bought at Concerts. So I don't know about the others, but when I was young, we got just 2 Rules. Never wash your Vest and only Concertbought Patches goes on your Vest. So yes its right , that the Movement starts with this 2 unwritten Rules, but to say it with the Language of 80ies Metalszene. Give a F about all A Holes who wanne tell you, whats right or wrong.
I definitely broke rules my big main patch is death never seen them live cause chuck died when I was 6 but death is my favourite I got a black sabbath and a ozzy patch never seen them and I got mix genres of metal all over
Rule nr1: make it your own 🤘☹️ I just bought a super cheap jeans jacket but ive been silly and havent bought any patches from the shows and 1 festival ive been to😅 so cutting arms and buying patches next 😁 Mine's gonna be as schizophrenic as my taste in metal. I dont listen to genres, I listen to good music😁
I feel like a failure lmao. My Battle Jacket is all political statements, my country’s flag upside down (the US is in distress so. Symbolism yaknow?) So far not one single band patch (I’m looking to change that. Just haven’t found any patches at gigs that I dig the design of.) Am I a total failure?
My asshole comment is.... I'm not listening to someone wearing a ghost shirt talk about metal rules. :P But I all seriousness, I agree with everything u guys said \m/
not washing your jacket is nuts man. Honestly even the crustiest of crust punks prolly wash their jackets once in a blue moon, and so should you, although maybe a bit more often.
Rules no. As suggestions yes agree. The sewing part is a maybe, safety pins are ok (expect to loose some). Staples not if your going near people. Spikes ok assuming venues allow them. Personally hate them in the pit otherwise love them. You are a "fake" if you but patches of bands you never seen, but who cares you like them. As a teenager, you have to start somewhere. Back piece are normally two big pieces, be original place multiple instead at the end no rules, just imitating others makes it pointless.
LOL there are no rules. I have been wearing one since I was in grade 4 in the middle of the 80's and despite popular myth back then we did not call them battle jackets, nor did most people cut off the sleeves. We used to get in a lot of fights with jocks and skaters because of our jackets though so maybe that is where the term came from
Who on the hell wrote this?? Sounds like a bunch of posers wrote this. There is nooooooo rules in making a battle jacket! Just maybe a suggestion like "know of and at least something about the bands you are representing.
I've never heard any of these rules, Jack Skellington is just trying to ruin Christmas
Your Battle Jacket. Your rules. Please carry on...Thank you...
Amen!
- Claire
Hell ya
Ah yes, I definitely run around in black clothes and a battle jacket because I'm keen on following the rules.
Shit I guess I should throw away all my Dio patches, all my Motörhead patches, all my Black Sabbath patches, and all of my slayer patches
Fuck the rules 😅😅😅 just put what u want on the jacket🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
This comment is Punk Rock , Fuck the Rules 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
Literally
I had no idea I was breaking so many rules! 🙄
I've got Punk, Goth, BM, Death, Industrial all mixed together 🤯. Madness! 🤪
( I don't have a Madness patch though actually 🤔...)
Thanks for the shout-out guys.
Can I get Claire to stitch on my patches too? 😂 ~Big Dan
The sewing them on yourself thing , I'm disabled I use fabric glue lol x
I don't blame you! Get those patches on by any means necessary. When I got my first ever leather jacket, I used to just glue them on because i cba sewing through real leather 😄 no regrets, that would been such a pain.
- Claire
I plan too like glue corners then sew them on
Mmm.. glue is ok for leather patches but not for basic patches. It comes right through. Best bet, get some one to sew them on for ya. 👍
Get on with ya bad self! There are a lot of really good fabric glues! I like "shoe glue" which is used for leather but works very well for patches and is permanent even if you wash it .
What kind of glue do you use? And is it flexible? I've been too nervous to experiment
I wear my main jacket everyday, everywhere. I have five though😁. Too many awesome patches for one jacket.
Five? Woahhh 😮 I wanna start more too tbh! I can never stop buying patches 😁
- Claire
rule number 1: dont be an elitest metal dickhead.
all done, like what you like and let others like what they like. side note, love the no face patch.
i audibly laughed so hard at "sleep token"
Agreeed, right on 🤘
Haha no way you did it thanks for the shout out, and it's a totally ridiculous article love you guys mwah x
Wow the guy who wrote that article would have a field day with me, I make up weird band names and add to them to my jacket lol
Hahaha! Amazing 🤣 Give us an example?
I have a whole list on my phone of silly band names I've made up 😄
- Claire
Haha oooh I want to hear some of yours. One of my faves is: Neverending Dysentery@@MeadandMetal
Love that. I might have to do that haha!
@@TheWishDragon please do let's make it a Thing :D
If I was told "My mother sewed that Cannibal Corpse patch on." I'd be like GD your mom is bad ass!......what's her number?
I think Bolt Thrower once said: "In battle jackets, there is no law!"⚔
BATLORD?!, I cant tell if it is the best joke ever or if they are actually serious.
You decide :P
I think these rules are intended as a starting place and that's why their was multiple "don't be a dick, have fun" rules.
The whole point is self expression
I trust you because you're wearing a Ghost shirt.
Mine got signed by Lemmy so it ain't going in the wash!
Only reasonable reason to not wash it
Hahahaha i fucking love you two 😂😂 i just imagine someone walking around with a pin that is like 10 kilos on the back 😂😂😂
Most of these rules are petty but I also agree with a lil of it. Wear those jackets!
Mess with my battle jacket & you’ve got a fight on your hands ☠️🎃🔥🤘
I'm still collecting patches, and bollocks to one style of music. I've got Maiden, Marley, Muse and Madness amongst others. Not to mention the vegan patches and random stuff like my cub scout badges from the early 80s 😂
Omg! Never washing it! After Download 2023 just could not leave that but I was ours on a regular basis. Sad thing though my cure patch faded but the rest were fine. I love it when you see the biggest, hairyest metalhead dude calmly sewing at fests 😊 Something sp wholesome about it.
- Claire
If it really could need a wash, just wear it in the shower.
Could not agree more that a battle jacket is meant to be a second skin of your personality. It's meant to invite others to be like, "Oh! You love that thing?! I also love that thing! Absolutley! They're such useful icebreakers 😁
- Claire
The only rules for battle jackets is FUCK YOUR RULES. Metal is suppose to be fun.
You guys really made me feel better about this topic I was scared to put certain bands I liked when I start on a battle vest bc some i like aren’t exactly metal you know like suicidal tendencies or outta pocket 🙏
Dude Suicidal totally belongs on both punk and metal vests
I saw a guy at Download this year, with an ironic (I think) back patch of Cliff Richard. Absolute legend.
I hand sew my mates on...i even stitched a littls party skeleton on there in one of the gabs!!
I definitely think these rules are bullshit. 🤘😈🤘
No MC and no 1% those are my 2 rules and yes im aware there is a difference in battle jackets and biker cuts hahah
Also, don't puke on the amplifiers! I think we can all agree on that
Lol and true
cant be saying what a "real metalhead" is whilst wearing a ghost shirt
@ayysasuke I'm guessing you haven't watched the video mate. We're clearly taking the piss of out this article 😆 No one is in a position to decide what a 'real metalhead is'...

“Patches are for bands you’ve seen live.”
I guess I should throw away my deathspell omega patch then ;_;
Me having a bob marley patch on mine. Just simply bc I like him.
I also have never seen any of my favourite bands life, simply bc I'm in school and I dont have the money.
I break so many rules lol, but call me poser idk. I'm still getting into metal, so if someone has tips or important things to know I would appreciate it :)
(til now I have like 5 patches on my jacket lol)
Tip number 1: Do what ever you want with your jacket 😁
I think I'll put whatever band I like on mine including Dark souls 😂
whats you're opinion on mixing genres? make a vest per genre or mix it.
Also what is you're opinion on festival patches on you're vest?
Slowly starting my First jacket/Battle Vest. There's no theme to it, just what I enjoy. Punk, Metal (all genres), Bear pride patch, Church of Satan patch, and horror films. There are no rules for my look or vest, to me it's about having fun with it.
Big up on the Skyclad patch! 😉🤘🏻🏴
I’m not sure if anyone but me has done this but recently I got a bestial war metal battle vest done professionally at a place that does patch work. Only reason I did it because I was feeling lazy to put some patches on and wasn’t feeling any motivation to do so. I do have another black metal vest where I did do hand sewing myself so at this point who cares how patches are done on a vest
just realized that we were probably at the same Blind Guardian concert 😮
I have rules, but they're for ME. My 1st one is: A band may only be represented once per jacket, at least in terms of patches. I may have a pin of the same band as a patch though, but I try not to.
One of my vests is only early Slayer (up to and including Hell Awaits... Mostly Hell Awaits, in fact)
I have 2 death patches, but Chuck passed away when I was 6. Going to see Death to All though.
Ahhh okay I got to 6 and realised this is clearly a piss take.
Making my first ever battle jacket before I see Slipknot for the first time ever and I’m glad I learned these rules before hand lmao “literally sewing bands I’ve never seen live” lol
My partner and I have a game for our jackets…that we can only get the patch if we’ve seen the band for 20 minutes…but that’s just our little thing :-)
Just got suggested this video this morning....soooooo subscribed I want to hang out you you guys 😂 talk about music forever
Omg that giraffe i had a racecar patch on my old crust pants x 🎉
I say Phuck Off to "Battle Jacket Rules" as it is the perfect way to ruin something cool! I am Gen X where Metal heads and Punk kids hung out together in the 80s. I’m making a battle vest and I’m adding KISS, Guns N Roses and an AC/DC patches to it😼
That AC/DC patch is on the hme jattle backet
Nah the Witcher patch is fine because Vader made a song for one of the games 😂😂😂
Screw these rules. Mine’s got Batman and Ghostbusters, and all sorts of horror related stuff alongside the metal.
The only rule I follow is that every patch must be a band I have seen live
I have metal, punk, goth and everything inbetween on my vest
Where do you buy your patches
Check out Pull The Plug Patches…great gear.
There are zero rules in making your battle jacket! These jokers!!😂😂
The amount of hate comments on the ghost shirt is wild, let people like the music they want to
So does that mean I can put a sublime patch on my battle jacket??
The only one of those rules I agree with is that you should sew on patches yourself. Unless you physically can't, of course.
I completely agree with the iron patchs, there the worst kind! Also awesome vlog by the way!
I saw Thor the theatre tho xD
I'm so sad you guys not wearing Brothers of Metal. and no Battle beast and Beast in Black... underrated pewermetal bands that rock so hard, especialy the new Brothers of Metal album Kicks ass..
Zakk if you like reckless love do you like the almighty welsh warriors tiger tailz ? X
Hilarious video 🎉
Sleeves or no sleeves?
Yes and yes.
Definitely disagree with rule 2.. but. An exclusive battle jacket with only bands you seen would be cool as a reminder to and show others who you've seen.

I want to put a back patch of Linkin Park on mine even though I never will get to see them now, love linkin park sm ;-;
I definitely broke rules my big main patch is death never seen them live cause chuck died when I was 6 but death is my favourite I got a black sabbath and a ozzy patch never seen them and I got mix genres of metal all over
Turisas are great aren't they I've seen them countless of times
Creativity should not be impeded by rules. Just go crazy.
13:13 I'm afraid that is Bathory and not Batlord.
Ooooooooooh, thank you doctor! Didn't know that!
no way the crazy lixx, the singer in crazy lixx was my teacher
Rule nr1: make it your own 🤘☹️
I just bought a super cheap jeans jacket but ive been silly and havent bought any patches from the shows and 1 festival ive been to😅 so cutting arms and buying patches next 😁
Mine's gonna be as schizophrenic as my taste in metal. I dont listen to genres, I listen to good music😁
🍳
eggn't
I feel like a failure lmao. My Battle Jacket is all political statements, my country’s flag upside down (the US is in distress so. Symbolism yaknow?)
So far not one single band patch (I’m looking to change that. Just haven’t found any patches at gigs that I dig the design of.)
Am I a total failure?
I certainly didn't apply any rules when making mine (Profile pic)
F@ck your rules, I get more patches when I go to a concert. I also go get a shirt and patch or pin when I see a band I didn’t know but enjoyed
The no washing rule is fucking bullshit. I live in a country that gets hot during the summer I don’t want my jacket to reek of sweat 💀💀💀
You could always just wear it under the shower, just saying.
My asshole comment is.... I'm not listening to someone wearing a ghost shirt talk about metal rules. :P
But I all seriousness, I agree with everything u guys said \m/
Rule nr 11: I do what I want! 😂
Rules of the Battle Jacket-club. There are no rules
there are no rules for jackets its your jacket do what the fuck you want.
not washing your jacket is nuts man. Honestly even the crustiest of crust punks prolly wash their jackets once in a blue moon, and so should you, although maybe a bit more often.
Batlord is actually Bathory
😮😮😮
thor isnt dead just asw him live a few days ago
You know what the f***Rules are made for
Rule number 1: Don t call jour jean jacket/vest a battlejacket.. Rule number 2: Read rule number one again.
There are no rules! Make it and enjoy it, just make sure you know at least a couple of the band tunes lol
This shit too authoritarian for me 😂 I wear *whatthefuckIwant* to the DMV
We used to get in a lot of fights with jocks and skaters because of our jackets though so maybe that is where the term came from
5:31 this rule is dumb. i bassicly live in my battle jacket together with my bullet belt.
Only rule is there is no rule
Yo you keep f****** cool man I love you guys get more videos I want to see you guys more on UA-cam you f****** sick I love you
Who on the hell wrote this?? Sounds like a bunch of posers wrote this. There is nooooooo rules in making a battle jacket! Just maybe a suggestion like "know of and at least something about the bands you are representing.
I must be missing something because I always found theses vests to be the must cringe and nerdy thing about metal.
