In my opinion, this level showed the true level of destruction the combine created. You see the ocean drained, the atmosphere in this level is amazing. This is one of my favourite levels.
Here is why it feels cozy yet odd: It is apocalyptic. Lemme explain: It feels like a normal place untouched by the Combine. A place where people settled down even before the 7 hour war. Someone has lived here. Gave the place history. And even after the war, it gained further history. Over time the bridge itself was either built or just taken by the combine and the small houses would still remain. Ghosts of the past. Shells of History. They feel normal. As if nothing had happened. And yet... of course something did.
The four chapter run of Ravenholm, Highway 17, Sandtraps, and Nova Prospekt is easily my favorite section of HL2. That stretch is what (for me at least) cemented HL2 as one of the greatest games ever made.
The first part was nice but the limited arsenal was bad. The 2nd day was a masterpiece, i loved driving and running over combine and the bridge section was enjoyable, sandtraps was fine and nova prospect was also very good. Finally, the city 17 urban warfare was straight chaos
The airboat section would've been more fondly remembered if it was just a bit more like Highway 17 with little optional areas to explore and scripted encounters in those places. Perhaps after getting the gun and scaring the chopper off the player would feel like they've earned the leeway to open up and explore the environment rather than bum rush through feeling rushed.
This is phenomenal storytelling! I was about 16 years old when I played this game, and the bridge still sticks clearly in my mind as a great level in FPS games. 25 days from now Half-Life 2 will be 20 years old....
I always abused the quicksave key when the gunship showed up. Trying to navigate your way back to the rocket crate while that thing was shooting at you was always pretty frantic. The bridge in general was always one of my favorite sections of the game.
I thought that I was supposed to stay in the room and shoot the rockets through the windows at the gunship, so I was raging so hard during that part. (This was also before I learned that I could steer the rockets. I'm extremely slow when it comes to games)
One of my favorite moments is only because of the song for it. When you leave Ravenholm, having left behind a man resigned to his fate, and you come across the Resistance outpost that gives you the buggy. Triage at Dawn encapsulates the general tone of the first half of Half Life 2. It's somber...all you have seen is devastation and the broken spirit of those who remain. Like the members of that outpost might be relieved to see you, having torn apart the Combine squad attacking them. But they are grieving the lost, almost immediately as they know they might not have another moment to do so. But they know your mission, and they will give you all they have so you can see it through.
And now the pretty wide highway just ends right on the grass in front of the houses there. That always felt a little weird to me. I'd much have preferred if they could have had the road continue into another collapsed tunnel, forcing Gordon to cross the bridge.
We always see Half Life as a pretty scary place in general. But i don't think that compares to the sheer horror of having a man in an orange suit bunny hopping all around you, shooting you from different angles. Imagine being one of those combine soldiers 🤣
amazing thumbnail, if you could talk about the "cool-sad area" i would like it i also feel like your videos have been doing better in terms of quality, as in some shots, footage looks hand-held camera recorded, and also the use of stasis reminds me of episode 1 and the breencast, good work!
To me the nostalgic character of half life is definitely this one I love how it shows the ocean drained and the soundtrack and how we take things for granted until it’s gone
I played HL2 no lessthan 2 months ago, this is a very rememberable place, mainly cuz it took a while for me to realize you have to go under the bridge to turn off the combine only door. And ab9ut 4 deaths, 2 from the train, 2 fromthe dropship plus just inentionally playing dumb cuz i was losing my mind after 9 hours straight of HL2, to continue playing another 3 hours atleast lmao. When I first saw this area, I thought "oh cool another random place i can take from residentials that have ammo cuz why not!" When i saw the combine and the combine only forcefield "Ah dang, guess its kwned by the combine, anyway more shootie shootie!"
Half-Life is one of my all-time favorite game series. Not because of the gameplay but because of game's world and its feeling. And when I think about Half-Life 2, this bridge is what I remember of right away. The atmosphere, the music, the eerie, desolate feeing... Everything that makes Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2.
the bridge was my favourite part of HL2. Up until then I thought the game was pretty cool, but once I got to the underneath where Lab Practicum plays I had a Danny DeVito "I get it" moment.
Great video skyrionn! I was wondering if you would ever check out the arkane games, Prey (2017), or the Dishonoured franchise. Both have really good stories and would provide a lot of content for videos
That is my favorite point, it is also the whole highway that realy makes it clear how everything depends on Gordons hands - it is a pretty lonesome place with a ironic resemblence to our pandemic years... Just being alone at the beach can be very strange but also liberating.
Hey Skyrionn, I know that looking at other HL2 mods for lore isn't necessarily your thing but I'd love to hear your narration about Azure Sheep, POV, Entropy Zero 1-2 and it's future spinoffs when they release or something like They Hunger. There is a lot of neat stuff in those mods that would be neat to make lore videos on [even if it's just for the mods and not for the creatures since there are many new creatures in these mods] Hope it's a good idea and I really enjoyed the video!
I'm glad that you mentioned that the third story of the house isn't accessible. I've always wondered about that - there are no signs either inside or outside of the house of a staircase that could reach it. Just a quirk of the game I guess.
It's such a mysterious spot aswell, fog so you can't see anything, you can't even see civilisation or City 17 anywhere, just a wasteland filled with combine. Nice video! Edit: Please do a video discussing the several outposts in the canals and maybe more in the wasteland for more backstory on those areas!
Every time I play through HL2 and I get to the second Bridge Point map and Lab Practicum starts playing, I always find myself taking a moment to stop and just listen to the track. It is so good and yet so haunting. I also love that olive green the bridge is made out of. It is an instantly recognisable color for me.
You tell these stories just amazing. And I think it's a shame that you only have 200K Subscribes. Every day I wait for the next video you upload on Half-Life or Portal. keep it up!

The music in the background is ALSO nostalgic to the scene in Skibidi Toilet where Camera Woman finds a bunch of humans hiding from The War in an office building. And yes, they survive don’t worry 😂 So now with this video theres TWO great things I’ve heard this song in! Possibly three if it’s actually from Half Life 2. And it very well might be! 🤣 I feel like theres always a new HL2 song I haven’t gotten into yet even after like 13-14 years of being a fan lol
In some bigger picture way the sacrifices and failures of those who were in areas before freeman gave way to the opportunities that would save his life and humanity
I started replaying hl2 thsi week one of the buildings has a sniper xbow rebel death at the top when if you get close you get jumpscared by mines, and there s a hole in the ceiling where with enviorement storytelling you can imagine they got ambushed by air superiority of somekind
Besides nova prospekt bridgepoint was a personal Fav, i made sure to avenge the fallen resistance by decorating the houses with combine soldiers, spiking them to the walls with the Crossbow 😂
I recall the reason Valve released "Half-Life 2: Update" was specifically to make the train section at Bridge Point much easier, but I think they ended up making it even more difficult to pass lol
I think after the events of half life alyx. Eli and Gordon replaced her with Chell after being released from the surface by glados. Gordon, Eli, and Chell make a plan to destroy the advisors, save alyx, and use the borealis.

Bridgepoint and the whole Highway 17 chapter has for me those "Sunday vibes". Cozy but at the same time a bit, off.
Here is why it feels cozy yet odd: It is apocalyptic.

It’s my favorite part of the game by far
Play it in the fall when the weather gets cool

It's my favorite all time chapter in the entirety of half life 2 imo
The four chapter run of Ravenholm, Highway 17, Sandtraps, and Nova Prospekt is easily my favorite section of HL2. That stretch is what (for me at least) cemented HL2 as one of the greatest games ever made.
The entire "second day" of HL2 is a masterpiece in how to design atmosphere in a game, I agree with you.
The first part was nice but the limited arsenal was bad. The 2nd day was a masterpiece, i loved driving and running over combine and the bridge section was enjoyable, sandtraps was fine and nova prospect was also very good. Finally, the city 17 urban warfare was straight chaos
The coast chapters are so beautiful and peaceful. I love the dark, stormy skies before you enter Nova Prospekt
the airboat and buggy levels really blew my mind expecting just a shooter
The airboat section would've been more fondly remembered if it was just a bit more like Highway 17 with little optional areas to explore and scripted encounters in those places. Perhaps after getting the gun and scaring the chopper off the player would feel like they've earned the leeway to open up and explore the environment rather than bum rush through feeling rushed.
The moment that soundtrack started playing under the bridge, my gameplay experience started being actively transferred into permanent memory.

Which Half-Life series map stands out to you the most?
For me - either Bridge Point or Ravenholm. Both iconic.
City 17 early in hl2, love the urban maps
Ravenholm, the entire Coast including Bridge Point and Lighthouse Point, and the dam before Black Mesa East
you should cover the hl3 leaks from tyler mcviker
Half-life 2 - Bridge Point, Ravenholm, Nova Prospekt
Episode One - Citadel Core
Episode Two - Victory Mine
Either for me it's the Depot or Citadel, i love the combine style.

I'm really not good at jumping puzzles in video games, so the bridge was always heart-stopping.
